350Z Spinning Lug Nut and Stud Fix

  • When removing the wheels from my Z, found that one of the lug nuts on the left front wheel was cross threaded. When trying to impact it off the lug nut and stud started spinning together. I show the method I used to remove the lug nut so I could get the wheel off and proceed to install a new stud. I hope this is helpful for anyone stuck in the same situation. The new stud is holding in great at this point but if I do eventually replace the whole hub I will post an update video. Thanks for watching and for the respect and support of my channel.

Work at a shop. We are "maintenance technicians" and do oil changes, tire rotations, tire repair and removal/replacement.
There are a couple factors for spun lug nuts and wheel studs, but most happen when as the vehicle is aging. F*cks at shops are too lazy to tighten the lugs lightly and prefer to Zapp them on full speed with there impact tightening to "manufacturer torque specification" and claim they "know their gun" but are never accurate. Usually Slamming the lug nut to the wheel full force and gunning it till its "tight enough" usually over tightening. Studs and lug nuts can only take so much shockload.
Technically you mount the wheel flush on the hub and run the nuts on with your fingers about halfway on or more then start with the bottom lug and lightly gun it, then follow the correct tightening pattern. After that, lower the vehicle till the wheels are touching the ground and can't spin by force. Then use your torque wrench and tighten to manufacture torque specification.
Main points: don't be lazy, start threads by hand, lightly tighten, and use a good torque wrench to tighten too manufacturer torque specification.

I’ve had this problem before. My best tip or trick is take all the other lugs out except one on the bottom pull on the wheel on the area of the stuck lugnut, get pressure on the nut to help put it in place and back it out. Another option is the same way but actually tightening the lugnut which will help press it in place and you can easily back it out

Thanks for your input, and time spent, on what seems to be a very common problem. I'm going to update drum brake hardware on my rear wheels (Jeep TJ), and I have a cross-threaded lug in a tight spot in a 1 1/2" wheel spacer. Fortunately, most of the lug nut has made it off the stud. Hope to minimize the drilling. Only way to go. Cheers!

I just had that problem. One stud spinning in the hub. Tried to drill lug nut and or stud. Also used a carbide burr die grinder. The cone of the lug nut was down inside of the mating surface of the aluminum wheel and could not get to with drill or burr.. After three hours of drilling and grinding, I gave up and got the acetylene torch. Aimed the flame towards center of stud when cutting down the side of buggered up nut. Ended up with nut and stud gone but burned the clear coat and discolored around hole of rim. What alternative was there. Take it to dealer or shop and would probably be charged $1000 and ruin wheel or possibly refuse to even work on it.

Господа иностранцы, что у вас у всех шпильки ломаются? Резьбы смазывать надо, привалочные поверхности должны быть чистые и тоже смазанные. Всё же очень просто. Затяжка гаек только динамометрическим ключём. Вот и вся проблема.

thanks for the vid. I've run in to the same problem with mine today. Question. when you were drilling, how did you prevent the lug from spinning? Or did you not have that problem? I'm having same issue with a stud on a wheel spacer.

That's why I had the orange pry bar stuck in there while drilling, that's what prevented it all from spinning. I just had the flat side of the pry bar up against one of the sides of the lug nut and that kept it still. It wasn't fun and took a lot of time haha. Good luck man, if you have any more questions just let me know.

I have this same problem, how long does it actually take to get the nut off approximately?

It was a while ago when this happened so I don’t remember exactly but it must have been close to an hour or more of actually drilling haha. It was a pain.

Well, same problem I'm having. Currently drilling lol.
I used a 3/4 offset wrench to hold the nut in place incase anyone else has this problem.

Do you recommend the wheel to be up in the air when doing this or on the ground ? I have to do this for the left rear.

I got some titanium drill bits from Lowes. The brand I got were Dewalt but you can probably get any brand. 1/4", 5/16" and 3/8" sizes are what youll mainly need to get it out. So just make sure those sizes are in the set you get.
