Actually sending people to Korea was calculated move. War in Japan ended, but there were too many experienced soldiers who make whole life fighting, serving not exactly reliable vassals. Killing them all vastly increased strength of central army (and if they win, then free land), but Hideyoshi undercalculated that Tokugawa was exempt from service, due to some merit he did previously.
Actually it makes sense that he did more in his "retirement" then when he was shogun. It's a reoccurring theme in Japanese history as far back as the Heian period that the person in the "retired" position was the one running things behind the scenes, not the actual head of state.
“You know those Iberians first they give you Jesus then they capture your people and take everything you own” Philippine colonial history in a nutshell
More like early colonialism in a nutshell, they started this as an extension of Reconquista, basically raiding and capturing north african cities and enslave their population as they began to envision Reconquista as spreading Christianity towards Moorish land by force, and so they use the same mindset in other colonial expansion as well.
There's an anecdote about Tokugawa Ieyasu that while he was fleeing from the Takeda Clan after the disastrous Battle of Mikatagahara (which he fought out of a misplaced sense of "honor"), he was being pursued so closely, he didn't have an opportunity to relieve himself and ended up vacating his bowels while on his horse. After arriving at Hamamatsu Castle, his retainers laughed at him, to which he replied exasperated, "THIS IS MISO" (miso: a traditional Japanese seasoning produced by fermenting soybeans with salt and koji (the fungus Aspergillus oryzae) and sometimes rice, barley, or other ingredients.). He also had a portrait of himself painted that day as a "warning" to himself that he would view on occasions where he felt a little too brazen, honor-bound, or just "uppity" in general. Jack Rackam well i'm from holland myself and i know for a fact that dutch revolt william of orange (william the silent) is probably more interesting than william&mary because the conquering of england was great and all but quite easy and quick. Quite a few inaccuracies, like saying Ieyasu enacted sakoku when it was his descendants who closed the country(Ieyasu only lived as Shogun for two years, and sakoku happened twenty years after his death.)
Actually, Ieyasu want to improve relations with the west and trade with other nations, but under his own conditions. Plus, Ieyasu died long before the USA arrived in Japan.
Actually, the final outlawing of Christianity & the closing of the country were both policies instituted by Ieyasu's grandson Iemitsu, but they're super frequently misattributed to Ieyasu.
Japan is like adamant in keeping anyone out until Akainu steps in, and rain that massive Lava abilities of his, alongside with that high slow talking Italian Admiral that shoots lasers.
Believe it or not, I don't think I've seen him in anything. How is Drifters, by the way? I've been looking for something to scratch that Fate/Zero itch and the rest of the Fate franchise isn't doing it for me
Drifters is from the creator of Hellsing. I had to mention since you referenced Anderson in your Henry 2 video. In this series, famous dead warriors are sent to this Tolkien-esque world instead of the afterlife. They become prime recruitment material for either the Ends, who want to conquer this new world, or the Drifters, who are keeping the peace by recruiting those not already snatched up by the former. In this series, Nobunaga uses experience and knowledge from his past life in a more strategic, supporting role to the younger protagonist, another warrior from the same period as him, Shimazu Toyohisa. He, Toyohisa, and Nasu no Yoichi (from the Genpei War) form their own chaotic neutral triumvirate before they wind up being the linchpin for the Drifters. I very much recommend it.
+Milan Milacic What I meant was he died after closing the country to foreigners, a policy which continued until the gun boats. I can see how the phrasing might be misleading
What is that painting of the Black Ships rolling up on Edo? I've seen it in other videos about the Meiji Restoration but haven't been able to find it. Google Image Search is letting me down. By the way, I recently read the letter Perry carried from the President to the Emperor, and man, is it a piece of work. It reads like a letter from a crimelord to a recalcitrant shopkeeper. "Hey, Japan, this is such a nice country you've got here. It'd be a real shame if anything were to happen to it, am I right? Say, have you met my associate Big Matty? Look at that awesome gun he's carrying. I got him that gun. Isn't it a cool gun? Japan, we're friends, right? Of course we're friends. Really good friends, in fact. I hate to think what might happen if we weren't friends," etc. I had no idea Millard Fillmore was such a badass. He's the O.O.G.
You mean this image? goo.gl/images/SSgpvK I just searched "Perry Expedition" and a couple versions of that picture came up. As for the letter - yeah, that's exactly it! "What, these little boats we sent to your harbor? They're nothing to be afraid of, we've got dozens just like 'em."
I think, that Tokugawa Ieasu was one of the the luckiest unlucky people, that ever lived. He should've died at least 6 times during his life, but he always escaped and returned more powerfull than before.
"Zo, do you want the throne instead your stupid vrother? Meneer VOC here haz a very perfectly good guns and cannons and vhatsoever, vith a smol price of autonomous trading company (read: monopoly) and several (read: lots of fortress) outvost. Just in case, you know."
When it came to leadership and loyalty, to be sure. I didn't even get to go into the first time Ishida the Bureaucrat tried to kill him and he decided not to repay the favor, or any of his escapades with Hattori Hanzo. He did go on a bit of a killing spree after snuffing out Hideyoshi's son, but everyone has those days.
One detail about Nobunaga that gets overlooked because of the whole "Samurai were honorable and used swords and would never use a gun" thing is this: Nobunaga: What's that? The Portuguese: A gun, you use it to kill people. Nobunaga: Neat. I'll take all of them. Later. Nobunaga's enemies: We can take him, we outnumber him 10 to 1. What can he do. Nobunaga's soldiers: shoots guns. Nobunaga's enemies: Well, fuck...
One about his manifestations in pop culture alone would probably take a good hour. I swear, I've never seen anyone get so...hilariously used in pop culture. My goodness! He's been a schoolgirl, a Pokemon master, a literal demon lord...

And do you know what else is Western? That's right, it's conquering stuff. So what can we conquer? Korea! They conquer Korea, taking it from its previous owner, China, and then go a little bit further (Liaodong Peninsula).
And Russia rushes in out of nowhere and says, "Stop no you can't do that we were gonna build a railroad through here to try to get some warm water." And Russia builds their railroad, supervised by a shitton of soldiers. Then, when the railroad was done, they downgraded to a fuckton. Did I say downgrade? I meant upgrade.
And Japan says, "Can you maybe chill?"
And Russia says, "How 'bout maybe you chill?"
Japan is kind of scared of Russia. You'll never guess who's also kind of scared of Russia. Great Britain! So Japan and Great Britain make an alliance together so they can be a little less scared of Russia. Feeling confident, Japan goes to war against Russia, but just for a moment, and then they both get tired and stop.
♫♪ It's time for World War I ♪♫
The world is about to have a war. Because it's the 1900s, and weapons are getting crazy, and all these empires are excited to try them out on each other. Meanwhile, Japan has been enjoying conquering stuff and wants m̵͡͝͝o͏̨̨̢͢o͏͏̵̧̕ơ̢̢͜͜o͠͏͢ó͘o̶̢̧ó̷͝͠o͝͡o̧͘r̨̢̕ȩ̸ and the next thing on their list is this part of China (Qingdao) and lots of tiny islands.
AHH, A Bill Wurtz Fan. Welcome

2:05 nice Ozymandias reference.
You never fail to impress! OUTSTANDING! Keep it up!
This is fantastic! Great channel!
Aaaaaannd.... Subscribed.
Jackpot!! Loved it and I didn't even know most of those guys anyway!! Alex will now be all set for his trip to Japan.....
Always helps to have a little primer on the history, plus it makes those cool-looking castles even cooler when you know what happened there, depending on where he goes
damn this is good, you deserve more subs
Man, I was just starting to crave a new Jack Rackam video, perfect timing. And a great video as always.
Great content, research presentation-everything!
your really good in this, making it fun to learn history ;) awsome.
For me is always fun but im glad atleast someone can make it even more interisting.
Keep going man :)
This is great! Nicely summed up, fun and very accurate for a 5 min video!
0:37 nice Samurai Warriors & Basara cameo
These videos are honestly one of the best on UA-cam. Keep up the great work. Ps. What about a video about William of Orange for some dutch history
Thanks so much! Are we talking Dutch Revolt William of Orange or William & Mary William of Orange? Either one looks like he could make a good episode!
Jack Rackam well i'm from holland myself and i know for a fact that dutch revolt william of orange (william the silent) is probably more interesting than william&mary because the conquering of england was great and all but quite easy and quick. The dutch revolt was longer and more exciting because tiny holland fought against big ol' spain. But as you said: both are interesting and i can't wait to see one of those in one of these amazing videos ( or any video on this great channel ). It's nice to see that you respond to this kind of comments and take ideas of viewers serious. One of the many reasons this is one of my favorite channels and why you deserve my subscription. Once agian thx for yet another great video.
This is a good as channel! so underrated get yourself some shout-outs you deserve it
THANK YOU I NEEDED THIS
I would watch a soap opera about this era. Especially with Ichihime.
I love your style of videos!! Keep it up!
I would like to suggest a video on Niccolò Machiavelli, from what little I know on him his life seems to be interesting.
Other than that great video keep up the good work.
He died like 200 years before the creation of the USA
GUNBOATS lol
Dude, i enjoy your channel so much.
I knew the history here and just watched for the hilarity of your videos
Great video
Awesome video!
3:57 Japan: say sike right now
Actually, the final outlawing of Christianity & the closing of the country were both policies instituted by Ieyasu's grandson Iemitsu, but they're super frequently misattributed to Ieyasu.
0:36 is that Hideyoshi Toyotomi's model for the Samurai Warriors games?
Japan is like adamant in keeping anyone out until Akainu steps in, and rain that massive Lava abilities of his, alongside with that high slow talking Italian Admiral that shoots lasers.
Hold up, isn't that village at 3:37 shirakawago?
Modell for hinamizawa
Good one! Thanks bud
Shogun... I need more episodes!!
Here's a question. What iteration of Oda Nobunaga (e.g. manga, anime, games) is your favorite?
Mine has to be from Drifters.
Pokémon Conquest. Man has a shiny Rayquaza and is basically what would happen if N had been a proper villain rather than a pawn.
@alvi syahri Interesting, might have to pick up Drifters! Saw Madoka, loved it, Gen Urobuchi is the man
"open the country
stop having it be closed"
Nobunaga would also be great for a video, his life story is so full of crazy badass shit it feels like a tv show XD
"All your references have already been made" is honestly such a terrifying line for UA-cam commentators.
he died before the gun boats :(
+Milan Milacic What I meant was he died after closing the country to foreigners, a policy which continued until the gun boats. I can see how the phrasing might be misleading
No no i understood i just wanted to nitpick, btw awsome vid
+Milan Milacic Thanks!
Another great video from our favourite pirate! Gun boats do have a tendency of ruining everything eh?
deserves more that 27k views keep it up
2:05 That FGO Ozymandias reference tho
And also the loser of sekigahara especially satsuma (shimasu) got their revenge at boshin war... yeah, 200 years revenge taste so sweet...
What flag is that over Hokkaido at 3:23?
This channel is great, by the way. Deserves way more attention than it's gotten.
+Jonathan Haas Thanks! I believe that's the flag of the modern day prefecture
You mean this image? goo.gl/images/SSgpvK
I just searched "Perry Expedition" and a couple versions of that picture came up.
Ending song please?
so he doesnt have a gundam guardian tadakatsu???
Sooo, is the guy asking about navel modernization supposed to be Date Masemune?
wow this is so underrated.. actually better than john greens crash course tbh... subbed!!! keep up the amazing work bud
By the way he had the least chance to become shogun comparing to nobunaga and shingen but he end up shogun
I think you can make Zhu Yuanzhang founder of Ming dynasty about how he work from a monk and beggar to Chinese emperor
0:29 Bruh you have to see how most Indonesian's sultanate fall.
"Zo, do you want the throne instead your stupid vrother? Meneer VOC here haz a very perfectly good guns and cannons and vhatsoever, vith a smol price of autonomous trading company (read: monopoly) and several (read: lots of fortress) outvost. Just in case, you know."
he was a great man p.s. great video
When it came to leadership and loyalty, to be sure. I didn't even get to go into the first time Ishida the Bureaucrat tried to kill him and he decided not to repay the favor, or any of his escapades with Hattori Hanzo. He did go on a bit of a killing spree after snuffing out Hideyoshi's son, but everyone has those days.
true My ancestors were often like that going on viking raids ,killing people and Taking slaves p.s. love for iceland
If your looking for another video.. Simo Hayha (White Death)
One detail about Nobunaga that gets overlooked because of the whole "Samurai were honorable and used swords and would never use a gun" thing is this:
Nobunaga: What's that?
The Portuguese: A gun, you use it to kill people.
Nobunaga: Neat. I'll take all of them.
Later.
Nobunaga's enemies: We can take him, we outnumber him 10 to 1. What can he do.
Nobunaga's soldiers: shoots guns.
Nobunaga's enemies: Well, fuck...
Demon King doing Demon King things.
i like my position of power
Do a Oda Nobunaga one!!!!!!
One about his manifestations in pop culture alone would probably take a good hour. I swear, I've never seen anyone get so...hilariously used in pop culture. My goodness! He's been a schoolgirl, a Pokemon master, a literal demon lord...
Always wanted to Say Leyasu instead of Ieyasu
Wow!
I take issue with someone with a clear American accent using a png flashlight as a representation of the word “torch” in the phrase “passing the torch.”
Whose watching this with the new FX Shogun out?
i suggest you make a video about carl Gustaf mannerheim greetings from finland you are making good videos in finish= terveisiä suomesta teet hyviä videoita
Ha , got it!
PFFF- I came here to try getting some info for my project and I end up just laughing 😭 HAHAAHAHA “And then he died. He just died.” HAHAHAHHAHA
Nobody can talk about Japanese History now without referencing Bill Wurtz.
much too fast. but I like the part with Edo at the end.
what’s with the dislikes, though?
Broke: history of japan memes (jk, Bill Wurtz is great)
Woke: A SHAMEFUR DISPRAY
Backstabbing continued to be a thorn in his side...mix metaphors much?
Really? Nobody is gonna talk about onimusha reference?
Tokugawa! Ruiner of the great empire Nobunaga would have created! Had his general not been a backstabber Nobunaga would of seized the reigns of Japan! But then Tokugawa had to be a buzzkill and close the country off!
Japan: *Laughs while counting weeb revenue*
So after watching about 20 videos i think it's time to just submit and subscribe
Time to stop doing whatever I'm doing for 5 minutes!
I didn’t understand anything except Samurai Jack
This was fucking hilarious!! Sub and like good sir
Ikemen sengoku
What if Ieyasu wasn't the real Ieyasu at all?
Katy Perry seems awful disturbed/annoyed at that watermelon.
Yeah, I'm not sure who thought using fruit like a telephone would make for a good single cover, but who am I to judge?
A video on the history of Christianity in Japan👍🏼
Pretty sure I fought him in sekiro
Oh my gad this narrator is rapping pls tell me how to push a slow button
Did anyone else read tokugawa eyelash?
hahahaa this is fcking masterpiece!!
-im angry you did one thing wrong and i’m part ieyasu so I’m angry- help me
Gunboat diplomacy
Look I love you Jack but I'm going to need some more African-American history on here ASAP.
Revenge upon his senpai killer.... Lol hehe good one...,
Wow that was probably one of the most underdeveloped explanations of Japanese history I ever heard and this was just about one person! How the hell did THIS get recommended by Featured history, if it wasn't from my prior knowledge from better videos in the same relative amount of time I'd have no idea what the hell you was talking about.
Not gun boats FREEDOM
Nobunaga never was a shogun.
