At the same time in russian folklore the tsar was typically described as an “ally and protector of the ordinary people". Most likely cuz he established Sudebnik, a revised code of laws. The Sudebnik of 1550 liquidated judicial privileges of the aristocracy and strengthened the role of the system of the judicial bodies of the state. Also the Sudebnik confirmed the right of peasants to leave their feudal lords. Plus add his achievment as a ruler - he doubled russian territory for only 50 years of his reign. He established standing gunner army - streltsy. He established the first printing press facility in Russia. So he may be controversal person but he definetly wasnt a bad tyrant. He was only trying to centralise the country by forcing church and boyar nobility to obey the state. Aristocratic dynasties became way too powerful during regency. After the coronation at 15 he started a political war agains nobility who was trying to strip him out of control over country. And ultimately he lost this war cuz his son had a title but all the power was seized by Boris Godunov. And after death of his son dynasty ended. What made Ivan IV "Terrible"? Mostly it was terrible translation (what a pun) of his nickname, witch doesn't reflect original russian "Grozniy", which is closer for fearsome, grim or formidable, it's kinda hard to translate it in one word. Most likely his nickname appeard from russian word "groza" which means - thunderstorm. Also he didn't had this nickname during his life, most likely it was given him only in17th century and we can't say by whom, but it was represented in folk culture. And of course neighbors gave him other nicknames, mostly with a darker or humiliating meaning, cause who likes neighbors especially in 16th century.
The word terrible has two conflicting meanings, on the one hand it can mean really bad, disappointing or generally negative, but on the other hand it can mean something so great and powerful and foreboding that you are in fear and awe of it. The ‘terrible’ probably means more along the lines of terrifying and powerful than shitty
And what about the rather infamous Red Sultan that got recently popularised by Erdogan’s political party, for a deeply revisionist Turkish tv drama produced by their ultra conservative allies?
If you want someone who is interesting I would suggest Omar Mukhtar aka “the lion of the desert.” He lead a resistance force in Libya against the Italian occupiers.
It’s not that this was a bad video, or anything- however...You simplified quite a few things; you missed out the fact that his mother, his first regent was almost certainly poisoned by a cadre of high-ranking nobles when he was barely 8- & that he & the rest of his family were treated terribly by these usurping ‘regents’ til he came of age **8 years later** And his wife, who he’d married at 16/ 17 was **also** possibly poisoned, which brought back the trauma that surrounded his mother’s death- as well as the fear that she had been poisoned... though it isn’t certain.

Seriously, I’m super greatful, these vids are entertaining and informative and you’re such a personality I LOVE the channel 💖 if you have other social media (IG, FB, Twitter) I’d gladly follow! 💖💖💖
Thank you! Might be another long gap before the next video, but I do have a Twitter @JackRackamYT if you'd like to follow me there!
Jack Rackam WILL DO!!
I am loving your videos, thanks for OSP to leading me to this amusing retelling of these stories. By picking Wu Zetian and now Ivan, I can’t help but think you are looking up to Fate Grand Order to find inspiration. 😁 Hope you continue to do your good work!
i have stumbled upon a magnificent channel.
Your animations really are a step above other similar channels, in terms of comedy.
Jack Rackam: *talks about Ivan the Terrible*
Me: *start to think about that episode of Epic Battles of History that he appeared*
Try to survive, Ivan, no surviving.
I remember seeing a documentary about this guy and it was said that after analyzing his remains it turns out that he was living with crippling joint and bone pains and they debated the fact that maybe his chronicle pains were the cause of his ruthlessness or a least greatly participated to it
Is very similar to what happened with king Herod. He had cronic pain too
You should do a follow up video on the Time of Troubles. Lots of fun crazy shit going down then!
Do a video on the Swedish king Karl Knutson (Bonde)
During the late medieval times, there were a period when the list of reagents whent:
...
Erik of Pomerania king of Denmark
Erik of Pomerania [same guy]
KARL KNUTSON (BONDE)
Erik of Pomerania [again]
KARL KNUTSON (BONDE)
Kristofer of Bavaria king of Denmark
Random Swedish noble one
Random Swedish noble two
KARL KNUTSON (BONDE)
Random Swedish noble three
Random Swedish noble four
Kristian I of Denmark
KARL KNUTSON (BONDE)
Random Swedish noble five (Vasa)
RSN 3
RSN 4
KARL KNUTSON (BONDE)
...
The one guy was declared/declared himself ruler of Sweden 5 times (not always as king) during his life time.
It's also worth mentioning that he was elected king of Norway too! As the Swedes would say: Vilken jävla lirare!
@@apotato6278 How many times?
Would you do Suleiman the magnificent or Mehmet the conquer ?
And what about the rather infamous Red Sultan that got recently popularised by Erdogan’s political party, for a deeply revisionist Turkish tv drama produced by their ultra conservative allies?
If you want someone who is interesting I would suggest Omar Mukhtar aka “the lion of the desert.” He lead a resistance force in Libya against the Italian occupiers.
Brilliant as always
Do a video about Mary Anning, The woman today moust known for selling seashells on the seashore, but whose life is more than that
When your first emperor is named the terrible, you know your nation’s future is going to be as depressing as Russia’s.
your videos are awesome!
1:50 Uh...I really believed he did that for a moment.
I remember when there was a time when you only had 5000 subscribers. Damn you came a long way
Cool Video. Subscribed!
I'm honestly interest in the ad.
Never clicked on a vid sooo fast!
Just got this guy reccomended for the first time today
Says "no" instead of "nyet" in a Russian accent. 0/10
I’m so glad I subscribed
Since 2011. I am sad I just discovered you. I feel like I let you down. You should have more subscribers
If it makes you feel any better, the account was made in 2011 but the videos only started in late 2016
I heard Ivan's Rodion Shchedrin Stikhira No 1, and it is quite nice.
I’d love to see you talk about the other Tsars
He’s back!
“Ivan would never steal the monasteries land, Ivan also wouldn’t give the land back.” Aah Russia following Ivan example since 1560
This may just be the American in me, but I think the point when he started going crazy began with the words, "Absolute power".
I'm reading a History of Murder and Ivan's cruelty was way more severe than this video sounds.
Why isn't his hidden library mentioned by anyone, freaks me out oof
Finaly ur back
3:44 I caught that reference you absolute madman
What is it of? I'm prob gonna be an idiot but is it a reference to Harold Godwinson death?
MO he used the Lancelot attack music from holy grail
God, I love this channel
The big mans back not with quaaludes but with a new video for us consumers to feast upon!!
It’s not that this was a bad video, or anything- however...You simplified quite a few things; you missed out the fact that his mother, his first regent was almost certainly poisoned by a cadre of high-ranking nobles when he was barely 8- & that he & the rest of his family were treated terribly by these usurping ‘regents’ til he came of age **8 years later**
And his wife, who he’d married at 16/ 17 was **also** possibly poisoned, which brought back the trauma that surrounded his mother’s death- as well as the fear that she had been poisoned... though it isn’t certain.
Ahhhhh another unique history channel .')
2:15 Wait did his best friend defect to lithuania or livonia? The subtitles says Livonia but I'm pretty sure he said Lithuania.
As I recall the war was with Livonia, so probably Livonia
I believe my ancestros are responsible for Ivan's distrust toward the nobility lmao
I'm a simple man. Jack Rackam uploads a video, and I watch it.
Can you do Andrey Bogolyubsky next?
One theory is the Mercury he was taking medicinally was making him insane.
yoooo that painting tho
never have i ever seen something this terrifying come to life with a damn brush istg
Man I love your videos
Thank you!
I think this guy is in a mood for mischief, but good explanation
3:47- 4:04 is why I love russian history
Awww, Ivan the Terrible!Awesome! Btw love your sense of humor hehe
And can you make video about Elizabeth of Russia too? Love you from Indonesia 😍😊😊
Thank you! Elizabeth is a possibility, although it'll probably be a while before I return to Russia
He WAS a very effective leader
He was born into power, and taught how to rule. He didn’t do it through sheer talent. Even then he caused avoidable economic catastrophe and famine
I didn't think you'd actually post another video again.
Clearly you're new here, indefinite hiatus is my status quo :D
@@JackRackam I'm just happy there is new content. Keep it up!
3:50
*"Things were Alright...Too Alright."*
Russia's History!
🤣🤣🤣
I love this channel
I have a suggestion for a future video, The Life and Times of Richard Williams.
Pls do a Gouveneur Morris vid. Pls
Damn this helped me with my assignment 😊😊
Awesome!
Ah you're back!
Here since 600 subs🙏🏻
