Quite hard to win back your rule when you're deposed by your own military forces. And when we come in contact with litterary sources, such as Machado de Assis, the people were not really in the mood to fight for him, or for the new-born republic for that matter, no one really cared as the transition went smoothly as the real power was kept in place with the rural elites, just a change of the figure head of the state in fact.

Adding some interesting facts: In one of his trips, that Pedro II visited US, the journal New York Herald appointed him as an ideal presidential candidate for the USA, furthermore he was the most popular foreign leader back then, the people were always fascinated by his majestic character. The American Geographical Society held a special meeting with Pedro II. While giving his speech, the poet Bayard Taylor said Pedro were a friend of the American people and didn’t really appear to be a foreigner. Consequently, the Brazilian Monarch received 4000 votes in the 1876 US election, ONLY IN PHILADELPHIA, even though he wasn’t an actual candidate. According to Teresa Cribelli, assistant professor of history at the University of Alabama, Dom Pedro II's visit quickly fell into oblivion in the United States. Nevertheless, the Emperor's passage through North America would have resulted in some benefits for Brazil. The first telephone line in the country was installed at his initiative in 1877. Appreciating new technology, Dom Pedro met the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, at the Philadelphia Exhibition. According to the teacher, the emperor was also inspired by the public education system in the United States to implement free education to all children in Brazil, regardless of income.

Not true that Pedro II didn't care about preparing his daughter, Isabel, to become empress. They did discuss lots of politics, he gave her a lot of intelectual autonomy and she was invested in many political moves, most importantly the abolition of slavery.
She was viewed unfavourably most of all because of her husband Count D'Eu, he was really hated since the Paraguayan War and of course, Isabel was a women contribuiting to the bad representation of the future of the Monarchy
Some say she was too invested for her own good. She freed all her slaves in her farms in Petrópolis and Teresópolis when she attained the legal age of 21, gave them small portions of land to call their own, and paid them salaries. A move that was view with suspicion, some believed, and they were right, that she was an abolitionist, and the royals were supposed to be a more neutral. Not british neutral, but partisan neutral.
Bonifácio was actually the founding father of Brazil and the one who raised Pedro II as his tutor, and he had reason when slandering Pedro I who was a bon vivant and hedonist that didn't want to rule at first, later in his life he repented and asked Bonifácio to take care of his only son before going to Portugal to free his people from his totalitarian brother.
And in doing that led Portugal to chaos and civil unrest as his daughter and her descendants were unable to stabilize the country after the civil war. To this day some people still call Pedro I, "Traitor King" for essencially being the man who began the destruction the Portuguese Empire.
Yeah. Pedro I was not a very good king or Emperor. His only major achievement was declaring independence of Brazil from Portugal against his father who was another useless king who supported it. In Portugal, Pedro was simply a traitor who should have not interfered in a country he no longer had anything to do with, by causing a war against his own people and against his brother who by law should have been the rightful king. It caused a huge mess in the process that was felt until the end of the monarchy.

funnily enough, here on Brasil, plenty of ppl think that the monarchy was utterly horrible and that the forecoming republic ( which still perdures, kinda) is a great thing. the monachy wasn't perfect, for sure, but god is the republic weird and flunked
I suppose I shouldn't insinuate that there was nothing positive about any of the post-monarchy governments, after all it wouldn't be great if an emperor was still calling all the shots today 😄

He was the first monarch to visit the USA. He actually got about 2000 votes for president of USA because at the time people could just write anything they wanted to vote
Brasil and Argentina are one of the most tragic cases of missed potential. Both countries were, at one point, bastions of prosperity in Latin America and both were among the richest countries in the world (Argentina was the richest in 1895) and it all eventually came crashing down due to mismanagement and the inability to bounce back from the Great Depression
Some people say Pedro II was just tired by the time the republic was proclaimed, and honestly, I totally buy that idea. Imagining how much pressure he must have been put on since early childhood and how much it must have affected his development as a person is very hard for people with a normal upbringing.
Yea just a correction. Pedro wasn't the one to officially abolish slavery, his daughter was. She was actually a very proeminent figure in the empires sunset years, rulling over Brazil when Pedro became too sickly and tired to do it. Also the whole slavery thing was a bit more complicated, but overall pretty great video

Someone stuck in his own duty, someone who did his best to create a better Brazil, someone who really loved his land and who, even expelled from it, kept a feeling of love for it. This is the second and last emperor of Brazil, D. Pedro II, The Magnanimous. The greatest Brazilian of all time.
I mean, I have no love for monarchies, and I much preffer a democacy system. But it does HURT my heart seeing such a great human being like Pedro II achieving greatness on his own and have it taken away. But again, if wasn't for the monarchic system, he would probably do what he needed to do and live happily after being a extremely prestigious teacher. So, while monarchy was great for Brazil, it was only because it was Pedro II on the throne, but at the same time, it was a curse for him. I can't even begin to imagine what's like being born with a duty so strong you need to sacrifice everything you want to the greater good of your people, while having close to no emotional support whatsoever, since he was mostly all by himself his entire life. It was cruel.
@@LunaticoniSolar Misguided, though. The Prince is full of shit, riding on Pedro II good reputation as an argument for a system as if every monarch would be like him. Personaly, his whole argument of "My family is entitled to rule, its a right granted by god" gives me the creeps. Sadly, Brazil has never been a true democracy, we don't know how to be one yet. All we've done since is cycle between different forms of dictatorships and some periods of pretending to be a democracy.
We have a saying in Brazil that goes: "O bagulho é loko, mas a gente é mais loko que o bagulho" that means something like: "The things here are crazy, but we are crazier than the things."
"Vanities, self-love, haughtiness vibrate in patriotism: this has passed away; but it will come. You, as a young person, must uproot from your mind the deadly tendency towards the feeling of subordination of the country. Cultivate pride of being born Brazilian, develop it, propagate it, soak it, if you can, the national soul, and you will be benefited by the future. With this pride, nationalities overcome moral crises. It is halfway to greatness; one of the wings of progress and glory." - Pedro II, in exile in France.
This video is a masterpiece. Just a little controversy, though. Yeah... Pedro couldn't see a future for the Empire with Isabel in charge, but she was never the stamp of the Monarchy anyway. She served as regent 4 times and starting by 1871 she made the Crown throw punch after punch on the Slave system that not even Pedro could do. She was tough, very capable and extremely handy when it came for politics. She proved herself to be much more than anyone could expect of her (including her father) and engaged in popular festivals just like the Emperor. There's a reasom he's called "the Magnanimous" and she's called "the Redemptress". She "ruled" for more time than both Mexican Emperors and made a Reign of her own and that's really impressive by how things were. Despite this small detail, this is just marvelous to see for audiences outside Brazil.
The problem for Isabel is that while she was capable, she wasn't the type of dominant personality most of the women who managed to survive as ruler for long are (see Catherine the Great, or in more recent years someone like Thatcher or Merkel), so there was always some doubt among even supporters if the real ruler would be her or her husband, who was French and not particularly popular.
@@TheCowardRobertFord There was, but still she eventually got away from that. Among supporters, If that was the case, the ruling could already be tasked with her sons, that did had the necessary. Isabel had a personality more focused on be a mother, but the Count of Eu ruling on her behalf was a fantasy by the late Empire. It wasn't the same as if she succeeded when her marriage took place
The problem when you do things without considering the people that support you. In this case, the slavist barons. The slave abolishment was badly executed, and made a lot of people angry.
>Pedro couldn't see a future for the Empire with Isabel in charge, but she was never the stamp of the Monarchy anyway. Can you explain what you mean by this?
Though it should also be noted that 1. The emperor before P2 Electric Boogaloo left for cigarettes and never came back 2. Pedro II was kind of directly responsible for all those military juntas because he spent no time creating a worthy successor And most importantly 3. Most of things he did for the common good could easily be done under a democratic system. Just saying
Fuck democracy, it weakened the country's infraestructure so much it gave way for a mafia state to be formed around its "untouchable image". As a Brazilian and an admirer of the Brazilian monarchy, I'm in love with your video. Great abstract of the best Brazilian in history. Around here, his history is forgotten, it's not teach on public schools, he's not remembered in parades or anything like that. If you admire him you are seen as a reactionary who wants a dictator in rule or something along those lines. But for those who know the history, it's common sense to say that we didn't deserve him. Also, your portrayal of his daughter, I don't know, kinda inaccurate. Of course, she wasn't prepared for a political life, but she was loved among the people and respected. A devout catholic, there are some families in Brazil who said they were blessed with miracles because of her.
I've heard many stories from history that tug at the heartstrings. Some have made me cry. But this... This just makes my stomach turn. It fills me with a kind of profound exhaustion, like its the kind of tragedy that's enough to make you want to give up on everything.
8:20 "A life for the kingdom’s wellbeing” I wanna thank a certain Swedish track from a certain Swedish band's album about a certain Swedish Empire for teaching me that line.
This was amazing! D. Pedro II is really an inspirational figure. It would be great if you continued the Braganza Dynasty, this time lookin to the other side of the Ocean and did a video on D. João V (who made Portugal 30 richer than Britain) or D. Carlos I (the polymath monarch who was just the right man at the wrong time).
Because, even being just a celebrity, the Monarch study since he is born. The Monarch learn EVERYTHING about politics, diplomacy, economy and literature, unlike our presidents.
President is a title you get when you win the American Dream contest. Can’t pass ANY legislation, no ability to tax, no actual military training, literally you can have an iq of 50 and legally be elected president. 😓 That is not a joke, you know it isnt. Dogs are routinely “elected” mayor, that is what happens when you let the people decide for themselves. For contrast QE2 could have made the UK change language, brought them back to the gold standard, she could have brought back the imperial system; I mean why would the PM step in if it makes enough sense? She had to act through influence but it achieved the same goal. For a hypothetical example; HM QE2 has been notified that an armed group has captured the whole of parliament and is holding them hostage. She authorizes use of the armed forces to retake Westminster. What PM would say, “But Ma’am that is why it is so hard being Queen; do nothing.”
Excellent video man, I do have a recommendation for another video. Perhaps you could do a video about either Alexander von Humboldt, the German explorer and scientist who transversed South America, Mexico, and Cuba: cataloging plenty of bontanical and weather patterns. Or you could do a video on Talleyrand: The French diplomat known for serving multiple French governments from Louis XVI, the Republic, Napoleon, and Bourbon Restoration, was reknwon for womanizing and taking bribes, and playing a titular role in the Congress of Vienna in terms of keeping France whole and powerful.
I would love also about Andrés Bello, a Venezuelan humanist and diplomat that in Chile became a Senator, writer of the current Civil Code, founder of the University, honorary member of the RAE, and probably one of the most important figures in latin pan-americanism. And probably among the few whose face was in two differente currency, the old 2.000 venezuelan bolivar, and the current (and also the highest denomination) 20.000 chilean peso note.
Thank you for reminding me how disastrous the Brazilian republic is. Dom Pedro II was an example of a leader that we will never have here again. Now I'm sad, like the video.
@@PuroNonsense Not even close. The 1889 coup was influenced by positivistic ideas that not only opened the doors to the caudilhos from the rest o Latin America in Brazil, but would also encourage the military to intervene in Brazilian politics to this day. It was also in 1889 that Ruy Barbosa created the hyperinflation that would plague the country for a whole bloody century. All of this, accompanied by the setback in the industrialization process, the loss of freedom of speech and freedom of the press makes 1889, easily, the worst year in Brazilian history.
@@j.j.1609 brasil is a new country, that's the "regular" process any country goes while trying to become a republic. @@PuroNonsense There is nothing regular in that process, in fact, it only happens in Latin America and Africa. We were on our way to become the exeption but alas. Well, Alexander didn't have much of a choice (I'm assuming you're talking about Alexander the Great and not, say, Alexander III of Russia who also messed this up). His son was born after he died, and his brother was mentally challenged. His sisters Cynane and Cleopatra might have been decent successors, but back then, women on the throne just wasn't done...
He did prepare Isabel to be Empress, it's just that the elites revolted after she abolished the slavery (also why she is known as Isabel the Magnanimous/Redemptress. She is very short of becoming a saint too) and plotted a coup. Also due to the US having sent a fleet to threaten Rio, had the coup failed. So, thanks them too i guess

In one of his trips, that Pedro II visited US, the journal New York Herald appointed him as an ideal presidential candidate for the USA, furthermore he was the most popular foreign leader back then, the people were always fascinated by his majestic character.

And most importantly 3. Most of things he did for the common good could easily be done under a democratic system.
Just saying

Fuck democracy, it weakened the country's infraestructure so much it gave way for a mafia state to be formed around its "untouchable image". And you can only consider the 2006 election a mistake if you think Alckimin would be a better president, i honestly doubt it would be much different especially if you consider that the congress was a shithole in 2006, even more than it is today.
As a Brazilian guy, I got to say: THANK YOU!
Dom Pedro II my favorite monarch, and a testament to why i prefer monarchy over republican rule. glad you did an episode on him. tho i knew this'd be a sad one...
Like Marcus Aurelius!
(A few minutes later) he didn't prepare his successor for rule. Yep, just like Marcus Aurelius

Exactly, Marcus Aurelius could not stop the Roman Republic from becoming a corrupt empire, so very apt comparison!
What is it with these great leaders not training their successors? Catherine, Pedro, Alexander. Why do these great leaders just fumble the ending?
either you run the country or you teach your kid to, you cant do both
Well, Alexander didn't have much of a choice (I'm assuming you're talking about Alexander the Great and not, say, Alexander III of Russia who also messed this up).
@@riograndedosulball248 Wait so the US almost took part in a coup to depose the Brazilian monarchy?
@@CollinMcLean not surprising actually 🤔
