      I totally get what he's saying ...it's literally a blackish looking funnel starting from the earth's surface spreading out to all points of space-time around it. and the only way to get out of the "bulge" we're in is through rollerskating fast across the arcs of that funnel. (to give you a skater analogy) cuz gravity is always pulling you towards the funnel the way a blackhole does...and your outward speed through spacetime needs to be faster than the natural curve of spacetime otherwise you end up falling in like a buffalo into quicksand.

      @MusicCrafters 3 роки тому

      But he's doing an absolutely awful job at it. Yes, this is literally rocket science, but dumbing it down to explain to the average adult is not.
      I'm at the point where he is trying to explain why the main stage needs to land on a barge. All he has to say is, "the stage is flying away from the launch pad at 10 times the speed of sound, and it's not possible to carry enough fuel to reverse or turn around like a plane can. It lands on a barge because all you can do is slow the rocket down a bit and fall into the ocean, we bring the landing pad out to where it can land".
      After he says that, then and only then should he elaborate and say why it's physically impossible to carry enough fuel.
      He keeps including jargon like "zeroing it out", or radial motion, which for the average layman introduces just enough confusion and mental delay, as they try to determine what exactly that means, to leave them a few words behind and thus they become totally lost.

    Radio was invented in 1895 so before that we would only be able to read about him in books and not get this full experience.. In the future we will have holographic then fully physical tangible recordings of great people like Elon Musk talking so we can experience his speeches and lectures in person as if he is in the same room as us speaking and then the next stage is literally feeling him and being able to shake his hand or hug or high five him while he is making a speech and then actually talk with him.. The future is great my friends we will enjoy this all for our lifetimes...
    Oh and I bet in the future we will even be able to be him and live his life through his eyes and eventually through his body basically as if we were Elon Musk doing the things he did in a kind of 10D cinema being plugged directly into him.

      Except that he explained "orbital" velocity not "escape velocity". They are 2 different things. People often confuse the two.... even people that call themselves experts. Escape velocity of the earth is what is needed to escape from the influence of gravity of the earth. Merely achieving orbit does not fit the definition. A velocity fast enough to break orbit and continue away from the earth without additional thrust and without gravity bringing you back is escape velocity. Orbital velocity of Earth is an average maximum of about 7.8 Km/second and escape velocity is a minimum of about 11.19 Km/second . Orbital velocities can be much slower than the speed necessary to achieve that orbital distance. For example it is possible to orbit the earth at 1 Km / sec. A satellite orbiting earth already does this.

    Elons inability to succintly explain the answer to what was asked is why he is so very different from every one of us. Including the double PhD, MIT grads, engineers and other physics mentors out there. Speaking clearly and efficiently is the mark of a good SPEAKER. Explaining things (well) is a skillset that a good educator and instructor must have. Elon clearly isn't a talker. He is a do'er. Therein lies the difference. Being able to talk about shit really well does nothing for the world. Actually doing shit well does.
    Elon is a once in a generation genius. No other human on the planet is on his level right now. Think for a moment if you were in the business of changing the automobile industry, ensuring some sort of future on another freakin' planet, focusing on the planet's sustainability in regards to energy, tackling the gridlock of traffic and efficient travel and who knows what else. That is what's on his mind, every single minute. It seems inevitable that he has all of that in his head, and when any question is asked about anything related, it kind of all fills up in his mouth and he spouts it all out at once.
    The rest of us live much simpler lives, so naturally, we can point at his deficiencies and laugh because we quite simply, don't have as much world changing shit going on in our heads. I'd find it hard to focus as well if I was not only thinking about but actually implementing things that are changing the world.
    Besides, he is talking about Rocket Science (or Orbital mechanics). I don't know the difference and don't know anything about either, so I'd expect it to be a long, jumbled and complicated answer. For those that feel it can be "easily" explained, demonstrating some level of knowledge, great. Take that knowledge and do things with it. Important things. If not, your efficiently explained knowledge of it is worth as much as mine - in which, as I said, I have zero.

      lol to be fair, he isn't doing a very good job of translating his knowledge into laymen's terms

    • @ejhayes76
      @ejhayes76 4 роки тому +12

      It's not easy to explain to layman. I struggle with this as an engineer trying to explain how something works. There is often a lot of background knowledge needed and, like Elon, I struggle condensing enormous amounts of education into a few minute explanation, especially when the audience lacks the background knowledge.

    • @markb1511
      @markb1511 4 роки тому +1

      It's very easy and requires no knowledge in the subject, watch - "To orbit Earth, the spacecraft needs to go very fast. Once the boosters have completed their part in propelling the craft, they are no longer over land, so we need to land them on a ship." Boom. Done.
      Although his explanation regarding the craft's (and it's components) velocity, and the energy it would take to change its direction, was good.

      @@markb1511 I guess Elon was trying to explain why the rocket's trajectory has so much horizontal displacement. He probably thought the average person would expect the rocket to just go straight up, and thus the boosters would just need to be slightly detached and fall straight down back to that area of land rather than the sea.

      its just photographic memory that has to be translated to words. a picture can speak millions of words. problem is the proces at which to explain the picture. I always struggle trying to explain my insights to people like for example when i do verbal exams. but when i have the time like on a written exam my vocabulary used is alot better and i can explain it alot better.

    Learned more about rockets in this small clip than I did in physics class, and we've labored through that topic for three months ^^
    When he made that comparison with the bullet, I imagined the Space Station zooming by my window and ten times the speed of sound. I saw nothing.
