The Cars - Candy - OThe Cars - Candy - OThe Cars - Candy - OThe Cars - Candy - OThe Cars - Candy - The cars band benjamin orr
Such an underrated band. Ric Ocasek said "If the song was good I sang it. If the song was great Benjamin sang it". The entire band together was absolutely awesome, and Benjamin Orr was the best looking rocker to ever walk this earth.
Underrated by who? They were and are HUGE!
'Candy-O' is my favorite Cars album. Their debut gets all the love, as it shoulf, but the 'Candy-O' album is a late 70's (1979) gem.
It's my favorite, as well. It got unfairly overshadowed by the first album which wasn't fair, but life rarely is.
Elliot Easton is one of my very favorite guitar players. I really dig this tune.
you are spot on the solo here is perfection personified.
I remember when The Cars came out and all of us hard rockers were kind of resistant to their new wave sound,....but after a while, even we could not deny their amazing musicianship.
The whole Candy O album is really good. For teenage boys the album art was worth the money lol.
Oh yeah... Great artwork by the legendary Alberto Vargas. 👍
The first two albums are gold ❤
The day after the live concert my Oklahoma high school made us turn the concert t-shirts inside out or be sent home, and they banned it ever after. Things were different in those days, although my high school did have a smoking porch and shotguns in the window racks of pickup trucks in the parking lot were common.
First album I had to sneak past my parents at 14…
One thing about this song is it's hard to peg their sound. This has a mixture of new wave and rock. One of the reasons why they are such a great band.
Exactly, they have all these elements of early New-Wave, yet unlike general New-Wave, they have little Punk influence which is ultimately where New-Wave comes from. If you listen to their earlier (Capn’n Swing) type of music it borders on post-psychedelic, yet over time in the 70’s maintains a “hard-rock” sound that is simultaneously eclipsed by synths and digitally produced harmonies. Ric Ocasek himself said they were never ever a “punk” band, yet their sound cannot be ascribed to early-metal or funk. In a modern-sense I could compare them to Tame Impala, but even that is a bit of a stretch in their first 4 albums. They are a unique, some would say “over-produced” sound, but in reality (in my opinion) they were very ahead of the curve in terms of production. Their last 3 albums I would beg to differ although the lyricism always had maintained a beatnik-like sort of rhythm.
"This sounds like the 80's." They were ahead of the game putting this out in '79.
I got so excited when I saw this...one of my top 3 Cars songs with the beautiful Benjamin Orr on lead vocals...RIP sweet boy! No one knows what Ric Ocasek's lyrics are about...not even sure he knew! LOL
What's your other two Connie? I don't think I can choose 3. Probably Drive is my number one though, so different than the others.
@@metalmark1214 Drive & Moving In Stereo...but Bye Bye Love is also a fav...and they all have one thing in common...Ben Orr on lead vocals...he was also lead on Let's Go & Just What I Needed...two of their most well know hits!
From the time I was like fro 13 to 15 years old, no matter what I was listening to, this album cover was on top of the stack. In my not so humble opinion, hands down greatest album cover ever
Also, former heavy rocker here, and I've always liked this band. They were one of the few who were able to bridge new wave to heavy rock.
Yes! Those first two albums were gold! Check out their live shows from 78-79 on UA-cam! Greg Hawkes (keys) and Elliot Easton (guitars) are SOOOO underappreciated! Well so is Benjamin Orr (bass)!
That "growl" in the solo without effects is SICK!
Certified metal head here. Candy-O is up there in my top 3 albums. Night Spots, You Cant Hold on Too Long, Lust for Kicks are simply the best!
Early Cars was Awesome ! This was actually late 70s and seemed to be ahead of its time ! Lets go is another great song off this album …Keep those Cars reactions coming !,
This is the definition of s band. Every instrument and sound is essential in their tunes. Their production was killer back in the day. Saw them couple times in the 70s and 80s and they could play. Wicked band.
I still get shivers from Benjamin Orr's vocal on this. I had a huge crush on him. He was gawgeous!!
Same here. Benjamin Orr was an amazing vocalist and so very gorgeous.
Between The Cars and Devo I was so crazy for this music back in the day.
I was OBSESSED with the Cars in junior high and high school! Saw them twice in concert here in Denver.
Nice request Tammy. Yep, this is a nostalgic. The Cars had great party and driving vibes.
This was new wave, before new wave existed, but it had guitars, and well done rock guitars. First album I ever bought, about age 12.
I think the CARS rescued a whole Generation of us back in the late 70's / early 80s from the horrible existence of Disco & Yacht Rock! 😂🤣😋
The cars invented the 80s sound
I saw them in Dallas Tx. 1980. I will never forget this song live. I was 15yo and was the loudest most bass driving song I had ever heard.
Nice!
Great Reaction as always! NOW, for yourselves or as a reaction, take the time to listen to their song "Moving In Stereo"...but, you MUST let it flow into their song "All Mixed Up".
Most definitely! There is nothing like getting into the Benjamin Orr mode, it’s like being a zombie afterwards 💕 like what just happened! 😅
I saw The Cars live when I was 12 back in ‘81 and I remember being so awestruck by Benjamin Orr 😻 they were awesome 😎
Awesome reactions TNT. I was 13 or 14 years of age when this came out I loved it then, but I love it even more now at 59. Nice trip down memory lane for me, thanks!
Yes! The Cars were my favorite band during the entire 80s decade. So innovative and refreshing. Their lyrics were always intelligent and quirky, and both lead singers (Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr) were oh, so good.
Oh, how I love Benjamin Orr’s vocals and he was VERY hot. 🔥. Still sounds so futuristic. This actually was released in the late 70s.
My mom was in love with Ben. They died less than a year apart. I always hope she got to meet him in the afterlife.
Cars were so good, good at everything. Writing, arranging, awesome production and engineering, and Elliot Easton was a great great guitar player. Their first album is like a greatest hits album, great song after great song (Let the Good Times Roll, Just What I Needed, Best Friend's Girl, ...). Dig in, you'll like.
The Cars are one of my top 10 bands of all time... with Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Oingo Boingo, Sabbath, Depeche Mode, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones and U2. Yeah, I grew up in the 80s. The Cars just did their own thing and did it so well. Like those other bands, these guys explored new horizons that we now just take for granted.
This album dropped my sophomore year in high school…great stuff! I got to see them in concert that same year…great musicians great concert!
One of my top 5 favorite bands. I like the songs that Benjamin Orr sings (and like watching him too). They sound incredible live too. Just What I Needed, Moving in Stereo, All Mixed Up, Bye Bye Love, It's Not the Night. A lot of people didn't like "Drive" or got burned out on it. I still love it, his voice is as beautiful as he was. If you listen to Drive, you should watch the video from Live Aid (not their live act, but the video for it). Live Aid was to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia, and that's what the video shows.
I was literally just listening to this CD in my truck this morning ✌️
A lot of good Car songs. Other great ones to check out - Good Times Roll, My Best Friend's Girl, Just What I Needed, You're All I Got Tonight, Moving in Stereo, Let's Go, Since You're Gone, Shake it up, Magic, and Drive
And Bye Bye Love
@@kustomdeluxe8489 absolutely...plus All Mixed Up as well.
Song sung by Benjamin Orr the base player
They started the entire new wave movement
One of my all time favorites.. the 80s rocked ❤
This song is incredible blasting in a 1984 Supra on a dark highway in 1984.❤
When the first cars album came out I kinda liked it. I liked the songs they played on the radio but one day I was at a local swap meet people that don’t live in California call them flea markets and one of the vendors had speakers and stereos for sale and he put Candy O” on and it was like I was at a concert and that’s when I became a real fan and I really love the cars..
Written by Ric Ocasek, sung by bassist and co-lead singer Benjamin Orr. About a fictitious girl. Ric loved to write lyrics that sounded cool and were poetic, not very literal at all. And The Cars were not into drugs at all, more a bunch of nerds that became cool in their willingness to be different. Also, they were all between 25 and 35 when this album was released, so they were a bit more mature than average pop/rock stars.
@Liz Pittman - I thought The Cars were a drug free band for a long time, but they liked marijuana a lot. They were very professional, so smoking it was done *after* a show.
P.S. The title, ‘Candy-O’ was inspired by Benjamin Orr. Being the “eye candy” of the band, whose last name begins with O, put them together and there you have it!
@@ellab8897 I knew about the marijuana, but I didn’t know about Candy-O being inspired by Benjamin. How did you come to know this?
@@Liz11- I read it in a comments section for a video of Candy-O, probably the one from the Musikladen concert. I think the commenter wrote it as a “Fun Fact.” I don’t know how she knew of it, but I like it a lot and it makes sense to me, so I have repeated it a few times. I hope I haven’t been spreading something false, but I admit I don’t know.
@@ellab8897 It’s as good of an explanation as anything else! The only 2 pieces of related info I can recall are in 2000 during the “last interview” where Ric and Ben briefly discussed who Candy-O was about. Ric says he never knew anyone Candy O and asks Ben, “Did I?” Ben says “You never told me about it.” So that could have been all tongue in cheek, or it could just be that a lot of time had already passed. The only other discussion about Candy-O that I’ve come across is in 1995 at South Station when the Orr band was about to play it live, the keyboard player kind of taunts Ben by repeatedly yelling “Candy Orr” with a fake Boston accent. And Ben just laughs. So we will probably never know if there’s a real story there. And it’s kind of funnier not to know!
@@Liz11- I hadn’t known about “Candy Orr.” Interesting…funny too! Since learning the possible story of the “Candy-O” title, I’ve thought it could have something to do with Benjamin posing with a very lucky lollipop 🍭 on the back cover of the Candy-O album. The eye candy enjoying some real candy?
1978. Epic year. Van Halen, Police and Cars debut albums. Cars were unique and ahead of their time. New Wave grandfathers. Girls and drugs are the same 😂
The Cars amongst other bands takes you on a head trip
This takes me back in time. I was really young, but my brother had all their albums. At the time, I thought Ric Oacasek sang all the songs, but since learned Benjamin Orr did a lot of them.
It's strange, but I rediscovered The Cars just recently as the You Tube algorithm put them into my list of videos to watch. Really a trip back in time and very enjoyable to listen.
My first album I bought $8.99 at Gibsons on 10th Street Greeley, Colorado. Now the store is called the food outlet . Bought it in 1979. Now it's 2024, and I still have it.
I remember when my Big brother came home with this record... couldn't get enough of the album cover.. the music was great and too ! Lol!
New Wave was in the late 70's and the Brits Pop Rock & Punk really did influence alot of American bands towards creating an entirely new group of Genres of Rock & "Alt" as we call it now. The Cars exploded upon the scene and blew everyone away. They dominated the airwaves due to crossing over on all genres such as Pop/New Wave/Rock and you heard all of their big hits on many different radio stations. Another great job guys! You guys totally ROCK!!
This is very nostalgic for me. Bringing back memories that bring a laugh and smile!! ❤️
Benjamin Orr has a great voice with great green eyes he is a gorgeous man
That was cool! I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was fun watching the two of you rockin' out!! You should check out 'Since You've Gone'!
Love the Cars. They’re 1st two Albums are like Greatest Hits Albums. Late 70’s Rock that ushered in the 80’s Sound. Saw them Live in 79 and found out they had 2 Absolutely Amazing Lead Singers.
You nailed it. This is what 1978-80. My child Hood, grateful band 🍄🌍🌹🌜⚡🌛🍄
Candy O is a song that you need to feel as much as hear. It is an absolute must to feel it at high volume inside a car with high end stereo, and large speakers! The bass vibes will rattle your brain like no other!
This whole album is gold
Benjamin Orr was the singer
This is my favorite Cars song!
Stunning production. Just stunning! Roy Thomas Baker, the guy who also produced Queen, is truly a genius.
Great band , great track.
If you ask me (nobody ever has) The period from the late 1970s (like this) through the 80s and just into the early 90s is the pinnacle of Rock music. Just think all the genres, musicians and songs that were created in that 15 year period.
Exactly. "80's" music had such variety and, for the most part, it was all good.
@@michaelhoward142 The way I remember it is almost entirely upbeat and about having a good time! Compare that to today’s music.
You should include the song before this (shoo bee doo) as it seques into this song. It’s partly an instrumental but the point where the two songs merge is the best part and makes this song even better. I can’t hear this song without hearing the lead up to it first.
I agree! The segue way between the two songs is incredible.
Ben Orr sang Candy O... that dude could rock!!!!!
I think the song Shoo be do was a prelude to Candy-o. Benjamin Orr the lead on this song.
I'm usually not one for live performances, but there's a live version out there that they did that actually improves on this recording. It's very cool.
I think you’re referring to the version recorded in Germany. I agree; great live version.
@@MB-mw1xr @SirRobin - Yes, I like the live version of ‘Candy-O’ on the Musikladen video *much* more than this studio version. I think there’s a video of only ‘Candy-O’ from the Musikladen concert, but I’m not sure.
@@ellab8897That is by far the best version of the song. It sounds darker and absolutely badass.
Top 5 favorite band 🤘🤘
Everyone liked the Cars back in the day. Disco people, classic rockers, new wavers, metalheads... maybe not the pure punks who hated anything smacking of the commercial, but everyone else liked them. Even my Dad, who would have been 80 this year, liked the Cars.
Their first 3 or so albums were fire, especially the first. After that they started getting a bit too bubble gum pop for my taste, though still a great band. They were one of the progenitors of new wave, but they still had a lot of classic rock and a bit of punk in their sound too, which gave them wide appeal. That, and their song writing and musicianship of course.
Elliot Easton is a woefully underrated guitarist. Greatly respected by musicians and especially guitar players, but never making any lists of top guitarists. He's one of my guitar heroes and influences, up there with Jimmy Page and Billy Gibbons and the like.
Great writeup, Jack. True, the Cars had an appeal that cut across categories of people and music fans, just by being themselves. And being insanely talented. I'll bet a lot of those punkers who claimed to hate everything not punk at least secretly liked the Cars, too. The Cars were kinda punk, in a way. Candy-O sounds pretty punk for them.
It's when they were more focused as I can tell fro listening, they just went for it. And it shows in all the songs. They all have a vibe and feel. Later albums have selected songs that are presented but not all were a thing.
Great Song! Fabulous Band..
SO THIS WAS THEIR 2ND ALBUM ( CANDY O ) T AND TASHA, THE FOLLOW UP TO THEIR DEBUT ( THE CARS ) BIG HITS WERE : DANGEROUS TYPE, NIGHT LIFE, DRIVE ALLLLLLL 3 BIG HITS YOU GUYS! THE LEAD SINGER PASSED ON ( RICK OCASEK ) 🙃🙃🙃
Sick guitar lead
I think Candy O is one of their best
My all time favorite Cars album.
I think their live performance video from when this song first came out sounds even better than the studio version.
Great song. One of my favorites. Guitar solob is short but powerful.
Elliott Easton is in my top 3 left-handed guitarists.
Puts me back on mission beach . Candy O and Dangerous type
Early cars was awesome.
I love the Cars. I graduated high school in 87. So this stuff is part of the soundtrack of my youth. You should check out the Melvyns cover of this song. 👍
The Cars were way ahead of their time, the fusion of rock with synthesiser paved the way for so many bands that followed
*Saw The cars, eddie money ,todd rundgren, bob welsh and fleetwood mack july 1978 at the Cleveland=-stadium.
Went for Rundgren and the cars, Eddie money was hot on the radio at that moment,,,,,The cars were so cool and detached. The new wave was rubbing up against top 40 their,
Tammy C is right.. This song is great.. Nowadays there has already been 550 songs that sounded like this. But back then, there wasnt a lot of songs like this. It had roots in rock n roll, but It was a new vibe that really could grab your attention when it was great stuff..
The Cars are underrated and you should react to Tonite She Comes by them.
I love the Cars! Takes me back to when a bunch of us would go roller skating. I miss those days! Thank you for the memories!
Good request Tammy!✌️
Cool review :) didn't think I'd hear someone mention Orgy aka the late 90s band who were friends of Korn hahaha. Well actually you're spot on about the industrial influence, I don't think many people talk about the Cars when thinking of industrial music...I always felt those vibes for sure you're the first person I've come across who actually said it. However these guys along with Cheap Trick influenced just about every metal band in the 80s, even death metal. That concise catchy songwriting style has had very subtle profound effects on people more so than what they get credit for....it's almost a hidden secret, really ;) in case you're wondering why certain bands that came after in the 80s sound so good. Dats where it's at🔥🔥
Lol hahahahaha, thanks for this comment.
Vocalist Ric Ocasek wrote this song and said it was not about a real person. He did say that the O in the title meant or stood for obnoxious. Other than that, I don't think it is really about anyone in particular. Lol. Great song though and somewhat more guitar oriented than many of The Cars songs. They were one of the premier New Wave bands from back in the day.
Yeah this album was released in 1979 they were way ahead of their time 👍👍👍
the cars are great
We called them Space Crickets.
These guys cane out in 1978 and blew me away. I'm a hard rockin metal head. Woh also loves rythm and blues.
Memories!
He played it a lot after it came out in the clubs leaving 1981 somewhere on there I know it came out in 79
Yes!!!!!!!
Here's the thing: You think it sounds like the 80s, but in 1980, we thought it sounded like the 21st Century!
Driving at night with your friends in a 70s Muscle Car, the futuristic sounds of THE CARS on Cassette Tape blaring through a bitchin' Car Stereo. A PIONEER Tape Deck with 4 Quadrophonic BLAUPUNKT Speakers while doing 80mph. THE CARS distinct sounds made you feel like you're flying in a Spaceship, heading for the Stars just ahead!
Another new wave / rock song you would love from the early 80’s is Why Me by Planet P Project
Benjamin Orr sang this one
This was the first album I ever bought myself as a 13 yr old kid.
God,I got this album in 1979 as a 13 yo.Other songs on it I would recommend - Double Life, Let's Go.And my fave It's All I Can Do.
Benjamin Orr singin' this one... Ric Ocasek is the other singer. Both fantastic! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Sadly, both have passed.😪
I wore out this album, it inspired me to play drums.
It’s All I Can Do from that same album is a must listen.
Cars a little ahead of their time. Also they had another good song from late 70s called Let's Go.
If you find time to play whole album for yourselves it has a great flow. As I watch you react while listening through headphones I'm envious of how it sounds for you, as I'm just watching on my phone. Reminds me of blasting this in my first car for everyone to hear.
For the love of Pete and Jimmy, PLEASE do Space Invader by Pretenders.
