QUIRKY Rock Band’s HIT was SO FAR Ahead of its TIME, They Started the 80s in 1978!-Professor of Rock

  • Skinny ties and mullets… A quirky band named the Cars with two singers (Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr) who split the difference between rock and new wave and power pop. They sabotaged radio with their 1978 song that seemed to start the 80s off two years early. Just What I Need became the ultimate Singalong classic. The character in the song is a little unhinged but the chorus is so catchy and relatable it was tailor-made for ad campaigns that would follow for decades after… The story of a song that opened the floodgates for a band every social circle loved but didn’t sound like anybody else… Next on Professor of Rock.

The late Ric Ocasek, was such an interesting cat- starting with his gangly, yet charismatic appearance, and his unusual countenance.
We’re all still reeling from his untimely death in 2019.
He had a New Wave haircut that was one of the original mullets...before the style was even called a “mullet." with his quirky and stylish shades as well Ocasek’s songwriting was just as unique as his physical appearance.
He had a quirky style that mixed 60s pop simplicity, with provocative curve balls, and a heady turn of phrase. The Ocasek eccentricity was on display right out of the chute on The Cars debut single “Just What I Needed.”
“Just What I Needed” was heavily influenced by two songs that Ocasek loved from the 60s, and those two songs couldn’t have been more different. The intro of “Just What I Needed” was actually inspired by the #1 bubble Gum hit “Yummy, Yummy, Yummy” by an assemblage of studio musicians that labeled themselves The Ohio Express.
You can definitely hear the melodic similarities of the intro on the Ohio Express tune, and on the opening riff of The Cars classic.
It’s OK to compare the two. Ocasek was very honest about lifting the intro of “Yummy Yummy Yummy” because he found the song to be deliciously infectious, as did everyone else who heard it on AM radio.
The 2nd song that played a major part in the stylings of “Just What I Needed” was “Sister Ray” by the Velvet Underground- the legendary avant-garde rock quartet from New York City that was one of Ocasek’s favorite bands: “Sister Ray” closes side two of The Velvet Underground’s momentous 1968 album White Light/ White Heat.
The lyrics were written by lead singer Lou Reed. He built the song’s narrative around a story he wrote about debauchery and decay. Reed liked to refer to the “Sister Ray” character the song is named after as a “transvestite smack dealer.” Ocasek was fascinated by Lou Reed's edgy eccentricity, and borrowed Reed’s “time time” repeat and found a place for it in “Just What I Needed”
The Cars were formed in Boston in 1976 after Ocasek abandoned some earlier projects that

Most of the best albums were recorded in a hot flash. Strike while the iron is hot… hit the ‘record’ button on the first take… catch lightning in a bottle. The big mistake so many bands make is that they spend way too much time in the studio pursuing perfection, and they forget all about inspiration. The first Cars album is a classic example of what happens when you just go for it while you’re feeling it.

I dunno. To me and to many others, that song really encapsulates the late 70’s. I mean yes, it obviously foreshadowed the early 80’s, but so did more than a few other new wave bands right around that exact same time. DEVO, B-52’s, Elvis Costello, Blondie, etc. What set the Cars apart from other similar bands was the way they seamlessly bridged the genre gaps. People still argue about how they should be categorized (which to me is silly and pointless, but people love to argue about these things). Were they ‘new wave’? Were they power pop? Were they just plain old rock? On and on and on. I’m of the opinion that they were all of those things.

The New Wave started in 1974. The Cars were part of a wave of bands that were as innovative as they were, and like them shared a deep appreciation for the Velvet Underground. Listen to Devo’s cover of Satisfaction, Television, the Modern Lovers, Pere Ubu, and many others.

    • @Shikta-poobah67
      @Shikta-poobah67 4 місяці тому +1

@@joemagarac405 Just out of curiosity, why 1974? I mean I know that Television started out that year (as did the Ramones and Blondie), but none of those bands had any released recordings until ‘76. I know it’s probably just splitting hairs, but I’ve always thought that ‘76 was the birth year for new wave, and then ‘77 was when it really kicked in to high gear. However I couldn’t agree more that it all had it’s roots in what the Velvet Underground was doing in the mid to late 60’s, along with a few other ‘ahead of the curve’ bands, like The Stooges, MC5, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, and dare I say it… The Doors.

I've always loved the Cars, their music always stood out as different, catchy, and not just insipid pop. I have always felt their sound had a throw back feel, but I've never been able to put my finger on it. Really glad I watched this as it has brought light onto the Cars influences and where their sound came from.

Originally, they were supposed to use a collage of different auto-related photos for the cover, but then the label (I think) thought it was a bit too "S&M", so they used the pic of the model instead. Benjamin Orr in particular was adamant about keeping his private/ personal lives separate. They were just classy that way, they never aired anything in public. In August of 2000, knowing that Ben did not have much time left they sat for a final interview to reminisce and discuss their music. Merida had only 3 AM radio stations in those days (1980) that put only Guaracha, Cumbia, Salsa and Merengue nothing of Rock and I was one of the very few who heard and liked Rock and I was nicknamed Peter Rock. I said to myself that if the music wasn't nice at least I'd have a poster of a beautiful girl to hang on my wall. Everything changed when I heard the record, so superb songs. I remember me and my buddies burning this album out, playing it hundreds of times the summer after it came out. We used to play "air keyboards" to " Let the goodtimes roll". Later, as a young adult, I took my new girlfriend at the time, a very pretty and popular girl, to A Cars concert in Phoenix AZ, in 1985. She was very impressed, and well, let's just say, things went well for me after the concert!😂
Later, when I was in my late twenties, me and my buddies went to a famous cycling race in the famous mining town of Bisbee AZ. There were thousands of people attending. I remember one of my buddies running up to us and shouting, "I just saw Ric Ocasek and Paulina Poriskova walking down the street!". We all took off running, as we were all fans of Paulina, my favorite Sports Illustrated swimsuit model of all time, and cause we were also huge Cars fans. I was a musician who graduated in 1980, so you can imagine just how much they influenced me. What I do remember from their arrival on the scene was some of the guys I knew labeling them as a synth band, my response being “really? There are two guitars, and have you listened to those soloes?!”

    • @justaskin8523

Yep, a lot of people will hear some bleeps and bloops and to them it's all synth. Not a slam on Greg Hawkes of course. He was great, plus he's a multi-instrumentalist who can also play guitar, bass, sax, piano, ukulele, and gobs of other instruments.

Being the youngest of 5 (All boys), most of my early introduction to music was from my older brothers. I was addicted to listening to music and reading album covers. From being completely petrified of certain album covers (Billy Joel's "Stranger" and Queen's "News Of the World), to having my hormones jump started by my parent's Herb Albert & the Tijuana Brass "Whipped Cream" album...I couldn't get enough. Then, on my 13th Bday (1984), I received one of the greatest Birthday presents I ever...A boombox with detachable speakers. My one older brother took me to the record store in the mall to get buy my first cassette tape with money I received from my grandmother. That Tape was "Heartbeat City" by the Cars.

Ben certainly had more technical prowess & range, but RIC was all about originality, mystery, and he had the “IT” factor. However, with this said, the reason for their similarities, as what Ric once said, they spent so much time together over the years. that similar vocal stylings of each other would come out naturally.

What gets lost over the decades is the degree to which at the time The Cars represented a bold return to minimalism, a stripping down of rock to its core elements, without losing any edge. At least in this specific sense, they represented a parallel to punk, which blasted through the perceived excesses of baroque, self-involved rock music.

I got into the Cars about a year before I got into punk. The back to basics simplicity of their music was definitely one of the factors that seasoned me for punk. I guess in some ways one could say that they were a ‘gateway’ band for me and for others.

As a fan of Queen starting in 1974, I was so surprised that when Baker moved on from producing them his next big project was The Cars. From the operatic and orchestral excesses of Freddie Mercury and Brian May to a stripped-down synthesizer sound of Ocasek, Orr, Hawkes , Easton and Robinson. "Just What I Needed" by The Cars stands as a testament to the transformative power of music. Its infectious melody, synth-pop fusion, minimalistic production, and rebellious attitude made it a cornerstone of the New Wave movement. Ric Ocasek's influence on shaping the landscape of modern music, particularly within the New Wave genre, remains indelible, ensuring that his legacy lives on in the hearts of music enthusiasts around the globe.
The late 1970s marked a pivotal moment in the music industry, witnessing the emergence of a genre that would redefine musical boundaries and attitudes: New Wave. "Just What I Needed" was more than just a hit song; it was a musical phenomenon. Its infectious melody and memorable lyrics made it instantly appealing to a wide audience. The song's accessibility allowed it to transcend conventional genre boundaries, drawing in listeners from various musical backgrounds. The Cars masterfully blended rock elements with synthesizers, a defining characteristic of the New Wave genre. This fusion of traditional guitar-driven rock with electronic sounds was a testament to the band's innovative spirit. By incorporating synthesizers seamlessly into their music, The Cars helped pave the way for the synth-pop movement that would become synonymous with New Wave.
New Wave music often embraced minimalistic production styles, favoring clean and uncluttered arrangements. "Just What I Needed" epitomized this approach, focusing on essential musical elements without unnecessary embellishments. The song's simplicity allowed its core melodies and rhythms to shine, a hallmark of New Wave aesthetics.
New Wave was not just a musical genre; it was a cultural movement characterized by a rebellious and non-conformist attitude. In "Just What I Needed," lead vocalist Ric Ocasek's detached and effortlessly cool delivery embodied the spirit of New Wave. His vocal style, devoid of excessive emotion, resonated with listeners, reflecting the nonchalant yet defiant attitude that defined the era.
Unfortunately, the world of music suffered a profound loss with the passing of Ric Ocasek. Ocasek's innovative songwriting, distinct vocals, and visionary production techniques had a lasting impact on the music industry. His contribution to The Cars and the New Wave genre as a whole remains an enduring legacy, inspiring generations of musicians and listeners alike.
