It made sense, seeing as you have footage of the original equipment, whereas I don't. I've done the same in the past with my lift videos, where other people have filmed lifts before a modernization and I've only got there afterwards,

There are many Linden towns in Canada, USA, and Australia.
That crossing warning works really well. All those people really took notice.
As someone who both lives in Linden and works on the trains (I'm a train manager for the Wellington region passenger services, lol) it was disappointing but not surprising how many people jumped across at that crossing. Unfortunately the area around the Linden crossing is a rather infamous location for train fatalities, both accidental and not. To a certain extent it's impatience since double crossings are quite common especially during peak times, but it's still selfish and stupid to cross the track when there's a train approaching.
Also about the automatic gates, I don't know how accurate this information is but I believe that after trialling the gates at Redwood and Tawa they're intending to add pedestrian gates at Linden as well. I'm not sure if or when, but I do hope it's something they include in the future! At the very least to stop all the near misses and collisions that happen here.
Yes it needs to happen there for sure! I'd also like to see the magnetic locks for the "emergency exit" gates (with a button to release them from the inside) brought in, which is used in Auckland. So many times I see people use the emergency gates to skip the lights, especially on the pedestrian crossing by Tawa Pool/Tawa College.

Cool video! Interesting to see the operation of the 2nd Train warning system, perhaps the pedestrian crossing could be fitted with swing gates to make it safer?
I lived in Linden (bottom of Woodman Drive) for the first ten years of my life, so know that level crossing quite well, although it's a bit different from how it was in the 1970s, with those new barrier arms and lights, not to mention the two-train warning system (is that still there today? - I see this video is from five years ago). Still, seeing this video feels like catching up with an old friend. My mother and I sometimes used to take the train from Linden into town (we also occasionally went on the Johnsonville line). In my late teens/early 20s, my paternal grandmother (who lived in Tawa) and I did a few train trips from Tawa to Paraparaumu and back (we were both rather fond of trains, and she used to give me the NZ Railway and Locomotive Society Calendar every Christmas; I continued to buy it in her honour until they sadly stopped producing it in about 2020).
Nice job with the tripple train crossing, I have tried to get one of those on film and never got it. I really like the second train warning at this level crossing, It's just a shame most of the people from around there don't think it applys to them. This is (and always has been) the worst level crossing in the Wellington area for missuse!!! People have died here and they still haven't learned!!! The orignal second train warning system was installed here in the 70's and is the only example in Wellington. Christchurch has three level crossing currently with that system but they only have the light up signs. I am really hoping to film down there sometime soon.
The issue is likely because the people who do it are the locals who are familiar with the crossing, so they're used to it. I think most only went accross because they noticed how slowly the train was moving (not that it makes a difference when it hits you). Had it been a full-speed Express, I doubt as many would've gone. When the second train passed, the third was still at McLellan Street. I think that becuase it was going was slowly people assumed it was another stopping train, when it wasn't.
Another problem with this level crossing is that it can be active for a whole 2-3 minutes, The system is great for expresses, But this is a very poor design for stopping trains, For south bound trains, The trigger for the second train warning is as far back as the new overpass for the Transmission Gully turn off on the other side of Kenepuru station, That means if a train is going over McLellan Street and the other train is pulling into Kenepuru station, The warning comes on even though the second train is stopping or is stopped. So as you saw, People don't like waiting that long time (Even though by law they should).
This is an issue that pertains to most crossings on this line through. The only crossing that aren't impacted by being next to stations are Redwood (due to the staggered platforms) and McKay's, becuase it's nowhere near a flaming station and possibly Waikenae, as i think that's far enough back that trains in the platform don't trigger it.
Linden is definitely the worst one though. This crossing went down at least 2-3 other times whilst I was there that I didn't film, and I was only there for 25 minutes. It must have been going down every 3-5 minutes!
@@the_alex_ellis_channel6923 Yes that sounds about right, I'm pretty sure I counted the same when I filmed there... It has a lot of rail traffic at that time of day.

Now THAT is an epic capture! Damn Tawa people like to take risks! That train must have been getting quite close as the last few stragglers crossed the tracks. I'd give em a reasonable blast on the horn if that was me. That sign sure is hard to see during the day. Perhaps sometime in the future they might upgrade it with LED's, using them to form the letters like with the Train Coming signs at stations such as plimmerton.
The third train was running at an unusually low speed, as it was stuck behind the all-stopper (which was held up due to the freighter in front of it). Still doesn't excuse it though.

They sound and look just like ours here in America. But other countries interest me down to the last detail! Even railroad crossings!

Actually in Minneapolis, MN there are similar systems for the light rail system. Many major crossings have "ANOTHER TRAIN COMING" lights and a more urgent tone is played. Most ATC equipment is supplied by TAPCO.
The old gate mechanisms look really old! Nearly all of those that are left of that type in the US are in museums. The taller lights make them more visible at windsheild height!
10:11 I thought there would never be a 3rd train here because there are two tracks and trains aren't that frequent! Probably the rarest scenario with this crossing equipment!
Although this 2nd train coming system is of a unique desing, I've seen 2nd train coming lights in Denver. Also, the British E2S alarm has a similar 2nd train voice announcement!

There's still a few crossing's around with the Griswold barrier's, however they are gradually being replaced with the new WCH ones. Have a look at some of my other videos for more NZ Level Crossing equipment. There's a few other channels out there too, if you just search for NZ Level crossing videos.
You'll find that nearly all of our equipment comes from the USA. After Griswold went bust, Kiwirail switched to Western-Cullen Hayes. There's also a few Safetran type 3 E-Bells around (but very rare).
The older crossings in my area (Wellington) are not going to survive too much longer. As one of the busiest rail networks in the country (due to having a commuter rail network), our crossings often activate more times per hour than many others in rural areas do per day!

They should probably Upgrade that 2nd train light to Red LEDs because when this video was shot the thing was almost impossible to see
I believe that all major cities around the country that have 2 track level crossings should have the “another train coming” warning and sign in place as well as automated gates that close when the crossing is active and there shouldn’t be a manual “emergency exit” gate (because that would make the automated gates useless)

So actually here in America, some crossings have a system similar to this. New Jersey Transit has one of these systems at their grade crossings.

This signal was used on UK level crossings, but they were all removed which is a shame.
I know Spath level crossing did use the exact same lights, I'd be interested to know where else did. Later designs of level crossing over there used diffident versions of it.

Each city which has commuter rail lines in the United States operates their lines differently. In Denver, where I lived, they don't install any kind of warning for the pedestrians crossing the light rail tracks to get to the platform. I guess they figure that we're adults and can decide to cross the level crossing or not. The light rail drivers are very cognizant of this, so they move the trains slowly until they pass the commuter level crossing. Now street level crossings are treated with a very high degree of safety. First, the crossing is a four quadrant gate crossing so vehicles cannot go around the gates. A few of the street level crossings have a concrete median which serves the same purpose. There have been very few light rail/pedestrian accidents, but more light rail/vehicle accidents, especially downtown where the crossings are not guarded at all, and the trains are treated as just another vehicle which has to stop on the red traffic signal and go on the green.
One time in the states I was watching trains (not filming unfortunately) I was at a crossing where there are only 2 tracks, the gates went down and I saw 2 trains go by. The gates didn’t go up. I witnessed the super rare event of 5 trains going by in one activation. I do really like your triple catch as well.
That's amazing! Was the crossing fully automated, or one controlled by a signalman? Would be especially awesome if automated, less so if under manual control.

The trains were all MTS Trolley light rail trains if you’ve heard of that. The crossing there has 3 tracks but I said 2 because only 2 are used by light rail. The third is used by BNSF Railway’s freight trains. BNSF also has a yard down there. The crossing I saw this at was the Front St. railroad crossing in San Diego, CA.

They don't run on trip switches, it's a current shunt, the locomotive axel bridges the two rails together to make a circuit that triggers a computer that calculates the resistance changes to when to trigger the alarms

The warning itself is only in English, but the very first word, "whakarongo" is the Te Reo Maori word for "Listen" or "Attention". Though the word has other uses to, being also the name of a suburb of Palmerston North.
Where does the express get a chance to pass the all stops train on this line though???
All stops from Porirua in the afternoon peak all stops to Porirua morning peak. Some trains stop there in peak hour at off peak and weekends all trains stop there

That stupid driver has crossed that level crossing when there was a train approaching and some stupid people crossed it when there was an express train approaching that was dangerous. If someone fell over on the train tracks and there was a train coming they can easily get crushed and end up in hospital. Those stupid people have to wait before they cross. That was very dangerous

I think *^just maybe^* they should put automatic pedestrian gates. Then again people will just use those emergency exit gates. What I think they should do is put emergency callpoints that open the gate for 15 seconds, but they are in a place where you can be safe from the tracks, but not so misusing morons can reach over and press them.
When they install pedestrian gates, the gates they tend to use are motorised swing gates, which have a manual emergency exit gate next to them
So a magnetic lock on the emergency exit gate (with a release button where it cannot be reached from the other side) would be needed as well, otherwise people would just use the emergency exit gate to cross
