Woodturning | Chicken
In this simple project video you'll see me woodturning a chicken on my lathe. It's a great beginner's project and a cute little chap to help you to get to grips with your carbide tools and turning techniques.
I used some scrap wood for his body and padauk for his beak, wings and comb. The project does involve using a scroll saw, coping saw or bandsaw to make his feathers and head comb, but really its a super simple project.
I used my Dremel to carve the final shapes on the wings and so on, but left him super rustic to keep the project as simple as possible.
So, here we have it, a wood-turned chicken from scrap wood. I have so many ideas for different variations for this little chap, so you can be sure that I'll be improving on his design soon.

Did you catch your finger on the lathe my dear? Yes. I do watch that closely. I think the best picture was with the field behind. It looked like it had been at the farmers corn. It does have a big belly. An amazing project that anyone with children would give a great deal of pleasure. My very best to you and please stay safe. Raymond.

Great job Claire, you must be the envy of the foxy world, after all I bet every fox wishes they could make a chicken!
Couple of points. Before you parted off the main body why didn’t you finish the base, could have saved plenty of time doing that away from the lathe.
Also I think I would have used ordinary wood pva glue for gluing all the wood parts together, quicker and probably stronger.
For the head and crown why not fully round the head and shouldn’t the crown run from front to back not side to side?
Either way great unique design which looks really nice, well done!

Good idea about finishing the base. I sometimes forget the order to do stuff in - that would have been a good idea.
I’m struggle to make myself the space to cut curves too which is why I ended up with a flat ish head - I think I turned it the wrong way round really - but it was ok because I needed a flat surface to glue the comb on this time- even if it didn’t run front to back!! Ha!
