Woodturning | A Pin Cushion

  • In this video you will see me woodturning a Pin Cushion using tulip wood, a cottonball and a small swatch of harris tweed fabric.
    This is a simple turning for beginner's like me. I thought it would make a great craft stall item or nice gift for someone who likes to sew. Pin cushions are the best place to store your pins!
    I turned it on a worm screw initially and then formed a tennon to remount it on my chuck.
    The trickiest part was getting the fabric around the ball - with some wiggling and perseverance I prevailed.
    I hope you enjoy this quick project!

      Thanks Andy, not sure how to fix the cushion in properly if I was going to sell them but this one stays in well enough with the hot glue. 🥰 thanks for watching my friend 🌲🦊🌲

      Here is a suggestion Claire...
      Use the 1/2 cushion but cut or turn a disc 8 or 10 mm thick the same diameter as the cushion...
      Then you could staple the fabric to the sides of the disc... as you would with upholstery...
      This method would only need a rebate in the top to fit the disc into...
      Make any sense?

      Always seems to be the way! Thanks for watching - I’m trying different styles - voice over, no voice over, music, no music - just to see what work best. What do you think? 🥰🌲🦊🌲

      @@MakingItOutOfTheWoods Well, in that respect YT is very unpredictable and I'm probably not the best person to give instructions. Each time I think a video will do well it turns out to be a disappointment but the ones of which I had lower expectations often did very well.
      Meanwhile I'm just doing what I can within the time available and just hope for the best.

    • @MakingItOutOfTheWoods
      @MakingItOutOfTheWoods  2 роки тому

      Yeah, that’s very true. I did mean, what do you personally prefer though, a video with voiceover etc?

    • @emgiwoodworks
      @emgiwoodworks 2 роки тому +1

      @@MakingItOutOfTheWoods Voiceover seems to work best, never done one myself though. I'm lacking a silent room to do the recording.

    I was about to suggest cutting the wool ball in half and started to write this before you’d figured that out yourself. 😊 I’ve never made that style of pincushion, but I’ve made needle-felted wool versions without the woodturned base. I think that’s a lovely version, and am envious that I can’t create it.
    Edit: I can’t look at your store following the link in the description in my UA-cam app. It appears to be broken.

    Well done Claire, that Tulip Wood has some nice pattern in it and shows up really well.
    I like using hot glue but never keen as a final fixing agent, think that's because over time then end up failing.
    Great job!

    • @MakingItOutOfTheWoods
      @MakingItOutOfTheWoods  2 роки тому

      Yep, you’re right about the hot glue, but didn’t really know how else to fix it in there - if I made them to sell I would have to figure something else out. Luckily the fabric was nice and thick so jammed it in there well enough. 👍🌲🦊🌲

    Claire, very nice and very well done video on the process. A viewer commented below that the ball you used was Wool, but when you cut it, it appears to be more of a foam like material. Could you please clarify on this as to what the ball you used was made from.....thanks

    • @MakingItOutOfTheWoods
      @MakingItOutOfTheWoods  2 роки тому

      It was polystyrene- I think wool would be better because I believe it doesn’t dull pins but I’m not certain, sewing is one thing I don’t do. Hope that helps /and that makes so much for watching 🥰🌲🦊🌲
