For me this song couldn’t have come out at a better time. A song about how fear is poison, and casting that away to free yourself, right before the pandemic and all the shit since then. It was almost eerily prophetic, though in true Maynard form, he talks in concepts and not about specifics, and everyone can apply their own experiences to how they experience the song.
And he did it again with Puscifer's "Apocaliptical". It came out just as the pandemic hit but the song was written around sept 2019
the whole album is eerly prophetic. 2019 we were living in the past, just 1 year later every flipped on it's head and were in a new era.
Tool is amazing man, all 4 members are all incredible artists that give each other space to be themselves yet perfectly fit together at the same time. No weak links in this band and ZERO bad songs. Rare to find that in a band
Danny will be my favourite drummer for a very long time, I think.

I like your thoughts on this, I personally think the deceiver here is literally fear itself. Pls react to invincible the studio version, an amazing slow burner and very relevant to their career and journey up till now.

This album came out just as RUSH ended. I listened to it on repeat everyday and it helped me not only get over the loss of RUSH but it cemented my love for this band. TOOL quickly became my new obsession.
Also both bands contain two of the greatest drummers OAT, Danny Carry and Neil Peart

That Maynard sings "mitosis" exactly half way through this song is the reason it takes 13 years to put out a tool album 😂

I take this song to be from the perspective of a man steeling himself to leave an abusive narcissist. The section about fearing the light of the others is indicative of isolation and gaslighting, two very common tools of control and abuse. The poison being purged is all of the cognitive distortions and ruined self perception. The "venom in mania" is also reminiscent of the way BPO/NPD can get incredibly nasty when you threaten to leave them.

Fun fact: Adam Jones was apart of the art design crew on the first Jurassic Park when he heard Maynard's vocal demo tape and decided to leave and join the band.
Maynard and Jones met and formed the band in 1989 Jurassic Park came out in 1993?
He was also doing fx for terminator 2. Pretty sure he was in tool before JP though.

I'm sure someone else has invited you to consider listening to a bit of A Perfect Circle already but I'm just here to say the same. These are prolific creators and whatever generation has the good/bad fortune to see our species demise will absolutely know this music. Bands like Tool make you feel special just by being of the same time as them. Humbling and epic. Not trying to be hyperbolic but accurate😌
Do any song, Tool does not have any bad song, IMO. I like the song H, and The Patient. If you want an out of body experience, Third Eye is the one.

Great reaction. This song was written about the time of the rise of far right propaganda/hate/xenophobia in the media and Trump. People aren't going to like it but that's the way I see this song. It's a masterpiece.
