Radiosonde: What are they and how to find them!

Radiosondes are useful balloon based devices used for weather forecasting. Anyone can receive them and anyone can find them!
This video explains what you use to find them and what they look like.
It is important to be mindful of where they land and seek proper permission should the sonde land on private property.

I’m here because I stumbled upon one while metal detecting in the deserts of Arizona. Totally a wild looking device to find half-buried in some sand. That antenna! Haha

Makes me wonder why planes dont hit them more often, had no idea this was a thing and I have both a pi and sdr. Ill be out looking!

Looks like 400.15-401 is Federal Use only. Can the radio be reprogrammed to 70cm? That would be a cool little project. Either make a ground based weather station, or buy a balloon and launch it again.
