      Hi Hawk, I just discovered Jeff a few weeks ago and he has turned my head around. You said he "saved". your voice. Do you mind sharing what happened? I have Muscle Tension Dysphonia and so far have not permanently damaged my vocal cords, but I have experienced a lot of hoarseness and loss of my upper register. Jeff is helping me, too, and I'm going to take private lessons from him. What a brilliant teacher he is! So glad to hear that he helped you and I have no doubt he will help me, too. What styles do you sing? Good luck with your music! John Kelly

    Really helped me with the "break region", had a good day of being able to slip into the higher notes without strain. Helped for me to think of easing resistance (or just giving it space? hard to describe) to the higher frequencies, especially the higher notes. And visualizing those higher notes higher than eye level. As a go down the scale, I feel that region also lower down below the eyes and towards the nose/throat (on a vertical with a slight curve, not moving towards the nose much) . May just sound like babble, just some thoughts that helped me today.
    Most of the "realizations" I have as a vocalist come from piecing your videos together, thanks Jeff.

      Yes. I will address how that word gets used in singing. There are a few ways it gets used. For that matter, in next week's video, which is on high note singing, I talk about vocal fold release and how to cultivate it. I'll also do another video on it though.

    Hey Jeff, I've been a subscribed for a few years and you really should know you're amazing for all these warm ups and all the information you provide (I warm up to about 4 of your videos a day lol so thank you very much). Because I have come to understand that a lot of the work in doing these warm ups is paying close attention to your voice, I think adding little tips like you've done in the past that help singers listen to their voice and smooth out notes and tones would be greatly beneficial. I know you've talked about things like glottal attacks in the past, and that has been really helpful for someone like me who gets distracted easily and forgets to pay attention to their own voice. Anyway, if you take anything away from this comment, you should know you're loved and appreciated. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Obviously I'm going to get up early and try fit in an hour of warm up. But then it's load up get to gig, setup Sound etc, what do you recommend in this sort of situation when you have to be going from as early as 14:00 with a 4 hour vocal/guitar gig? :) All the best!

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 роки тому

      Great question! Everything you're saying sounds really good! Up early, body woken up, vocal warm up. All the right stuff! I might add that you plan your sets with your gig length in mind, and also allow yourself a few 'no brainer' songs at the beginning of each set so you can ease your voice from set to set. Let me know how it goes!
      Break a leg!

      @@JeffRolka Yea i try to - but i also don't do the "generic" gig songs, so anything from ROCK to POP to COUNTRY to a nice BALLAD (Like "in the air tonight" to something by "the Weeknd" etc, so i am definately pushing myself - but this is the first time I'm doing shows on my own as a ONE-MAN Rock Band (with tracks i make of course) - but still, takes a few to get the shakes out. :) Even after many many years of performing from Theatres to Rock gigs, etc. Thanks for you time to respond Jeff - I take one of your warm ups with me if i can't do it at home and i ALWAYS say out loud afterwards "THANK JEFF!" :) I love your style, as someone who's done music when i was younger and never really liked music teachers etc, your vide/style is so calming - THANK YOU.

      Hello and thanks for being here! Break-a-leg on your day of recording! Warm up carefully, and consider the overall requirements of the songs that you're singing. Include those elements into your warm ups and that should help a lot in your preparations. Perhaps the biggest concern would be in pacing yourself so that you don't fatigue too soon. Additionally, stay well hydrated and plan on having regular breaks to make sure you're giving your best throughout the day.

    Hi Jeff! Since this warmup video focus on the break, does that mean it focuses on getting rid of the vocal break? Or a smooth transition across it? I’m currently reevaluating my secundo passaggio because I have days when I can sing to A4 really good with control then I can’t sing efficiently past D4/Eb. Can you recommend one of you videos because I really need some guidance on what to do?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 роки тому +1

      What you're describing is what made me decide to become a singing instructor. I couldn't understand the inconsistency from one day to the next and why some days I had these higher notes, and others, I was stuck at d4 or so.
      The exercises on my channel can help you smooth the transition across the break, if practiced with intention consistently. To anyone listening to you, they will only hear consistent tone quality from your chest voice up to your higher notes.
      The step by step delineated technique is worked through in this three video series I did awhile ago:
      ua-cam.com/video/erFjTGWia5U/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/Z0zNHBcpWtk/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/3wRJ3hmI3d8/v-deo.html
      They're just as valid today as when I released them, though the audio/video could use an upgrade.
      I hope that helps!
      Jeff

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 роки тому +1

      Great question! Yes. Those two vowels are closely related in terms of their overall production. Above the secondo passaggio, also called 'the break' there is nearly no difference. Just a bit of rounding, as you say, and as I think of it too!

    Jeff, i have a question, please, i have that problem very often while training with your warm ups
    What if at the moment when you sing high notes with full voice, i can sing that high(for me) notes only with my "poor headvoice(not falsetto)".Should i change it between chest and head voice on that notes or what shall i do ?
    Hope you understand, english is not my first language :)

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  4 роки тому +3

      Those notes that you're identifying as full voice are in fact my head voice. When you make a seamless transition over the secondo passaggio you can do voce piena in testa - the sound of chest voice in head.
      If right now you sound a little head voice like up there, that's absolutely great. Keep practicing the transition. Work towards being consistent about the point that you transition both ascending and descending. Record yourself every two weeks and evaluate the tone quality. If you're focused on good airflow and making a seamless transition at the secondo passaggio you can get the tones to match with attentive practice.
      Great question! Thank you!
