Do this the right way! Learn from my mistake at the end where I dropped a part, be careful and don't do lose it!
How to replace the Ignition Switch Pin on a 2005 Jeep Liberty, this same procedure applies to many DCJ vehicles as this part is very common.
This can cause a sudden no start, they key will turn power on to everything, but the engine will not crank. This usually happens suddenly without warn, I drove to work but wasn't able to start the Jeep at lunch. Luckily I had wire with me and I was able to bypass the starter relay.
This procedure is essentially the same for Cherokees, Grand Cherokees, Wranglers, and other dodge vehicles. This is a common failure point and the part is not available from Jeep separately. Use Dorman PN 924-704. I purchased it from Amazon here: amzn.to/3lmQ55w - Авто та транспорт
The only person in any thread, forum or video I have searched who identified the need for and the size of the security Torx to remove the ignition switch. Thank you
I can NOT stress how important it is to LOOK AT THE PICTURE IN THE INSTRUCTIONS.
That brass piece has a small arm that reaches out and touches the long plastic piece that runs through the entire assembly. MAKE SURE YOU PUT THAT BRASS ARM ON THE CORRECT SIDE OF THE RAISED LIP ON THAT PLASTIC PIECE AS INDICATED IN THE PICTURE.
I broke my brand new replacement by not paying attention. Thankfully I used the plastic piece from the original and got it all put back together thanks to THIS video.
Great video. Very comprehensive. Odd that the same defect is also on pretty much every video I have seen so far. Yours is the best. Prior to pulling the ignition cylinder out, I put two witness marks on it. My theory is to make the reinstallation process, less arduous. Currently waiting for parts.
I’m going to have to try this on my jeep Cherokee asap. Eyes are awful so hope I can make do. This is best step by step I’ve seen thus far.
Identical problem with my 2003 Jeep Liberty. Your video & a couple others really simplified the repair---very appreciative!
Stg!! As a girl with not a lot of money and a kid this was needed I never knew this could be a problem....I need to fix it myself!
Amazing!!!! Good job. Suddenly my Liberty didn't start. Now I purchased the parts and I will follow your instructions
Thanks! Exactly what I needed. When I jumped my starter relay, mine would not start, but cranked just fine. Replaced the actuator and it fired right up.
Same for me. Won't start while bridging the relay even those the starter runs strong. Really hope this is the issue. Really worried if it's not it will be that sensor in the transmissions
Good video. I made the exact same mistake with the lock. I wouldn't have even noticed right away unless it had happened to you 😂
About to do this on my '04 and '06 LJ's. Thanks for the video!
Trying to figure out and stumbled across your video. Many thanks! Helped me repair my problem. Thanks for the Amazon link. Had the part delivered the next day. I love UA-cam and doityourselfers. 👍
Helping my neighbor and this is gonna help out. Thanks
Thank you very much, this was an excellent video and it was exactly what I needed to fix the problem. I was so happy when I took everything apart and that little piece of broken metal fell out. One thing I did notice is that the Dorman part uses a bit thicker metal than the original broken one.

Hey I am try
Thanks! Will DIY this job on my 1998 XJ soon!
Thanks for this video -that was exactly the problem and this helped me save a ton of $$$$!
You’re the man. Saved me $140 install fee. Thank you!!!!
Saving money is good, glad it helped "Mechanics hate him!"
@@IcarusOffroad Well Im a mechanic and I love ya. Customer got halfway through despite watching your video and said "nope" then came to me. I heard something drop and didn't know what it was until watching your video. Thanks
Great job! Thank you!!! This helps a ton!!!
Great video, very informative, explains the job well
Enjoyed your video. My "Jeep the Heap" had the same problem. I wasn't sure how toapproach it until I saw your video. Your details were excellent, thanks so much, great job!
Awesome video, fixed my Jeep! Mine wouldn’t work with that wire setup likes yours did. It would just crank. Once I replaced the actuator pin and ignition switch I’m back in business.
Great video!! Saved me allot of money!
Nice job on the video, you went straight to the point with no fluff or unnecessary jibber jabber like I'm doing now! excellent job, hope you get a lot of hits and rise to stardom!
Thank you for the video you helped me a lot 🙂🙂
Thanks for the video, it really helped me!
Thank you very much! This video saved me so much time!!
Thank you. I’m doing this now
Great demo
Thanks. I just did this repair to my 2006 Liberty. But, I made the mistake of removing the three black screws on the ignition switch which removes the white plastic plate. All kinds of things fell out. A spring, and little silver ball bearing. I ended up buying another one from Dorman along with the actuator pin part. Spent around $50 total which was a lot cheaper than towing to a garage.
Thank you so much for your help
Watched this earlier when I had to replace this part in my wife's jeep liberty. Helped me tremendously and saved me a crap ton of money.
Thanks for taking the time to post this video.
The "Security Torx" has a pin in middle. You can pry that pin offwith a small screwdriver. Then use a normal Torx..
Thank you for the information.
Thank you very much! Good vid man
Very awesome. Thats what was wrong with mine. Thank you so much
Glad it helped you.
Great video, thanks
Great video.
one of the best video wıew ı ever seen , thanks.
You can pop the top off the relay and just physically press the contact with your finger to make it turn over.you have to turn the key to on position. But if you have the ignition switch off all you have to do is put a screwdriver in it and turn it over. Key just needs to be turned to on pos so shifter will move. No jumpers are needed. And you can drive it without taking down the ignition switch and cyclling it to start . either way it's totally driveable without the stupid actuator . I think you took way too much off. I hope I'll get this done without taking off as much as you took off to do that I didn't need to take all that off to get the switch oheck don't think I have to take all that off to put it back in and I didn't. Just loosen tho everything bracket screws and you got room. You got some good tips on the actuator switch thank you. I've been starting it with the relay for months. Just replace the key cylinder a little while ago and decided it must be the ignition switch when I pulled the ignition switch off the chunk off the actuator fell off and I realized it was just a broken actuator. I really need to see how the actuator comes out physically and goes back in physically you did not show that thanks. Pretty good video I guess.
Life saver!!!
Very good job explains the fix. Best one I’ve seen on UA-cam 👍
Thank you for this video! I was able to get to the actuator but it isn't broken, I used the screw driver to turn the switch and it still didn't start. Any suggestions would be tremendously appreciated!
Ran into this problem. Jumped relay for about a week to get me going to work and such, after a week it wouldn’t crank anymore and starter just spun itself would not engage flywheel. Tested starter and battery they both good hoping just the ignition switch is the issue
Great video! Could be very helpful to anyone having to replace the ign. switch actuator assembly.
Hey i know it's been a long time since this video but i just wondered if you could do the same part replaced on a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse LS. I can't find a video for that specific part. I don't know how to take that metal cover off. Appreciate it in advance ❤😊
Does anyone know where the alignment lines are on the new ignition switch
Thank u
Would this work for a 2011?
Ok I've ordered two ignition actuators and the plastic rod that's in it keeps breaking when i try to put it in the ignition switch...do I actually have to have that plastic rod?
04 TJ, ran fine, next day key on, dash lights, no start...replaced ignition and actuator, still no crank......
Would doing a starter relay bypass, and it not cranking over, be more than an ignition actuator pin? Trying to start it with my key is giving me all the signs that it's the pin, but when I bypassed the relay it would crank but wouldn't start.
When you turned the key to on did the dash light up like normal? Its possible the pin is bad enough that you are not even getting it to turn to "on" if the dash lights don't come on.
Is it possible you can crank over the engine with a bad ignition actuator pin by taking out the starter relay and jumping the starter? Thanks
frank1992 yes totally possible, in fact if you check my other videos I show that process just before I made this replacement video.
Question if you have a minute... I followed your steps (many thanks!) but when I got to the ignition actuator pin the metal wasn't chipped or damaged. Does this mean my problem is going to be something else? Or can the ignition actuator pin still be the point of failure even if the metal is intact? Thanks
It may not be your problem, you can turn the switch with a screwdriver now that it’s removed, if it starts just fine with the screwdriver then it’s something in the ignition pin to switch mating.
Same thing with my
thanks for posting this video, very helpful...my question is, would you "recommend" changing the ignition switch while I'm in that deep?
SuperPondo not I wouldn’t. The actual switch isn’t known for being a common failure, and it’s likely that any aftermarket part you replace it with will be lower quality than original. And, it really does not take long to get down to the switch anyway, less than 10 minutes.
@@IcarusOffroad Thanks for the advice
So I lost the same part but i drove my car right after putting it all back together without that part and now it won't start again. I found the part and put it back together but nothing. I can't figure out what's wrong with it now though... Any ideas?
How did you get the ESC switch off of the top column cover?
This was an 05 so it did not have it. That being said I have pulled this all apart before on an 06+, I don't recall what it took to unplug the ESP switch but if you poke around with a light and look for a release tab you should be able to disconnect it if needed.
Why don't you show everything step by step from beginning to end from the time you take off the Shroud around the steering column to the time you disconnect the starter switch and pull off the cover and all the little the security screws and the little pins in the springs and the key inside the yellow tab and the shifter cable and all that stuff? You just got everything hanging there. It's already all undone. You're not showing any little tips about pulling it all apart. Seriously if anybody got as far as you are right now they know what they're doing.overall very good . thank you . helped me .
I have an 02 with the same starting issue will this part fit for mine?
Yes it should be the same for that year.
I got stuck trying to put the cylinder with the key back in place :/ Any advice?
Ben Haley the alignment is just really tricky to get it exactly right, the video makes it look easier than it is, trust me a spent awhile trying to get it right before filming!
I lost that little piece that goes at the bottom with the yellow button! I Absolutely hate it!!! Just one freakin' little piece that was causing me all the headaches!!
I hope my auto parts carries it.
The dealer *might* have that, but I doubt it. The actuator pin is considered part of the steering column, and its only sold new as a complete unit. Doorman might make a replacement little metal part, but I think you will need to goto a junkyard and remove it yourself from a vehicle. The little metal piece keeps the shifter from being moving out of parkwithout the key to on, but does not affect starting. If your trans is still in park that metal piece I lost didn't make a difference in starting.
My 07 will crank with relay jumped... I take apart my ignition actuator and no damage. Fuel sprays from rail. Any advice on ignition switch itself? Could this cause it to not crank/not start with key on starter jumped??
Does the key not get the engine to crank? If it has good fuel pressure and wont start with the relay jumped I would check if you are getting spark next. Neutral safety switches can also also no crank issues, but shouldn't keep it from starting with the relay bypassed.
@@IcarusOffroad it will not crank with key alone.
It will crank key on, starter relay jumped but will not run either way.
I'm going to check some more stuff on Tuesday. Busy with work and holidays.
That almost sounds like two issues but that is more unlikely to have two problems at once but it does happen. What was the lead up to this problem happening? How was it behaving before?
@@IcarusOffroad I wish I knew more. I got it not running. I was told it would sometimes take a jump sometimes it wouldn't, and one day it just died.
Where did you get the little “jumper”
You can make those yourself with stuff from the electrical section of any auto parts place.
Any idea why after changing the actuator the key won't "lock" in to the ignition positions? And I don't have to press the key release, I can just remove the key?
Martyn Lee since you are talking about the key release button I assume that means you have a manual. On the automatics there is a mechanism that controls this which ties into the shifter cable. The manual steering column is different with the button. It’s been a long time since I have worked on a manual so I don’t remember how those parts interact, but I would guess something is a little off there. If I can find my spare manual steering column this weekend I’ll take a look at it and see what I can figure out.
@@IcarusOffroad thank you. Yes it's a manual, should have mentioned that sooner!
I have a problem if you can help? Ignition turns on etc everything fine but the steering lock is engaged and won't disengage. It fired up then cut out and now won't start again?
I have the same problem
Did you find a fix?
What would cause the actuator pin to break twice? The mechanic claims I need a new housing
ua-cam.com/video/IcqRTh-c2kY/v-deo.html
Sometimes when I go to start my Jeep, nothing happens when I turn the key. The dash lights come on but nothing else. I have to just keep turning the key over and over again until finally it starts. Would this be the problem?
Yes it very well could be. It could also be the NSS neutral safety switch.
I have a video where I show how with a piece of wire you can bypass the starter relay in case of a failed ignition pin, try that the next time it doesn’t want to start. If that doesn’t do it you can try holding the key to the start while you jiggle the shifter, if the transmission sensor(NSS) doesn’t think it’s in park it won’t let it start.
@@IcarusOffroad Oh wow! I never thought of that. I will look for that video. Tysm
What year model and exact jeep is this?
This was a 2005 Jeep Liberty(Cherokee outside of North America)/KJ. The ignition actuator though is common to many more Jeeps going back to 1997 and for at least until 2007 or later.
Maybe mention spring first..... just saying
FIRST STEP-- BATTERY NEGATIVE OFF BEFORE PULLING OUT ANY SWITCHES.
Thanks for this video -that was exactly the problem and this helped me save a ton of $$$$!
