- After watching some old Dakar Rally videos that included the Suzuki's DR Big rally racer, we thought we should build a modern version with the new V-Strom 800DE. Come along as we build the best Suzuki V-Strom 800DE in the world as we prepare to race the NORRA Mexican 1000 Rally. With a tight timeline, can we get the bike finished in time????

Vstrom800DE owner here. I'm looking forward for your ultimate DR big800 build.
Glad you did it on our behalf as this will trigger increase in accessory upgrades to the Vstrom800 out to the market. Since accessories for the 800DE is not as abundant compared to the other more popular brand models. Glad you kept the engine as is since it's what made this bike a truly underrated machine. Thanks and following your build in the days to come! All the best!
It’s the big Stromboli
Same here! Thank you!
Never thought i would drool over a Suzuki v-strom and now here we are.
Proper build this one. Not just bolt-ons - actual development - nice.
As an 800DE owner, thanks for making content on the bike. That said, you guys definitely bit off more than you could chew, but that makes things exciting. Race well, race safe. Wishing you all the best!
It is really amazing to see the extent to which you went to do the build, sounds like it will be amazing. Best of luck Justin and team for the race🤞💪
I don't like the concept of boring the triple clamps... Maybe swapping the stem on the 450 clamps would be better... Thinning the material makes me nervous..
The diameter change was less than a millimeter. Trust me I wouldn't want to race it if we didn't think it would last. 😊
Really nice !! Very happy to be part of this built 💪
Wow, as a former VStrom owner I'm in awe of what you've done!
I love it, and crossing my fingers for you man, sending excellent karma to you and your team!
3 days down, 3 to go.
Really impressed by the job done! Can't wait to see the bike running! 👍
You are definitely not afraid of a challenge. We will be looking for you on the podium!
Justin you’re the best brother. Can’t wait to follow your adventures with this bike in the NORRA! Ride safe my friend
Been in Love with CW builds since the 1970s. My fave was the RD350 Cafe you did back in the day. Still have a copy of that edition!
Definitely one of the more interesting builds I’ve watched, honest, interesting and entertaining, can’t wait to see part two and the racing of, we’ll done!
Great build so far Justin! Best of luck!
We also built an incredible V-Strom 800DE, and Mirco Bettini won the Lamas Rally 2024 with it.
I absolutely love this bike, it's so underrated!
Subbed. This is an awesome build! Excited to see more. Great job 💪🏼
sick build, cannot wait to see this - good luck from England
I can’t see how it does.. looks so bad ass! Probably going to inspire more production bikes with this concept! I wish it all the best!
Superb video! Thank you. This is the bike for the job
It’s GLORIOUS!!!
The bike looks fantastic
Brilliant! So looking forward to seeing how this project works out. Liked and subscribed with notifications ON! Good luck guys!!
Why am I not suprised that Hessler was part of this projekt in some kind of way XD
Hessler is the best!
Love the build, I can't wait to see it in action!
I thought pretty much immediately about Stefan Hessler when began to watch the video. Can't wait for the next part!
Finally! Been waiting for this video since the IG posts
Nice to show how much goes into modifying a bike beyond simple bolt-on's.
I've always enjoyed the major builds and appreciate it when the prices are for everything used because it shows that while a lot can be done, it isn't financially viable when buying a different bike that was built for the intended use (rally in this case) costs less.
It shows what is possible when there is no budget limit. And few, if any, of us would ever build a copy of the full build.
Very, very good project. Keept it up. It will be a go-to down the line of the 800de. Respect!
Nice build. I looked at the new Vstrom 800 last year, but went with the Aprilia Tuareg because it was more off-road designed and capable out of the box. If Suzuki had you guys design the 800, I'd probably own it (if it was still affordable). Looking forward to see how your 800 performs.
Subbed! Looking forward to the next installment
Wau 😀👍!! Looking good! Im all so V-strom owner.
Im wery curios to see and hear how you projekt go and how the rally go allso!
I keep 👍👍👍 to you and your team!!!
You can do it 😎👊
Great video, I can't wait to see the next ep :)
Looks good!
Hard work! Keep it up
Totally awesome build!! 800de owner here!
It will be fun to watch an ADV-based bike run against more dirt-oriented setups. Good Luck!
Very enjoyable build!
perfect build
Hessler rallye team has a full line up of parts to build this into a full rally bike. From my understanding Suzuki even worked with them a bit on the development of the 800. Awesome build, I like the rm fork swap.
Stefan Hessler was on speed dial during this build.
i love crazy stuff like this
Awesome! I wonder when are you uploading the next video about this bike. Thank you
15th! great result!
I was as high as 5th... We did get a 3rd overall on the second to last stage at least!
I want to see this bike run the “Race to Cabo!” 2024!!!
nice work, strong Suzuki a real DR Big 2.0
You have an awesome job.
Nice build mate those bars didn't look too tall from what I could see I know it can make all the difference as it does on my KTM 690R Enduro not that there's much comparison. The bike would probably be a bit tall with an Adventure load on it but hey you got some excellent travel now both ends it will be amazing to ride in the bumps and jumps for sure. It's definitely going to be fun chucking a leg over but compared to the new 450 Enfield and the MT you got a rock solid machine right there in my opinion probably around the same weight give or take. Thanks for sharing this fantastic build with us cheers Happy Trails
Cool build 👍👍
Outstanding effort to invent something for the first time. Maybe Suzuki will be inspired to do a Rally version!
Good work! Stefan Hessler will be proud of your support! Greets from Germany! Keep on your good work!
He was very helpful in this build, and I feel like I made a new German friend!
That's pretty rad 🙂
Bike build WOOHOO 👏🏼
That thing is super cool looks like something I would build.
I've had those Fasst adv pegs on my 701 for 5 years and they're still my favorite mod. In like them so much I bought their Pro Moto Impact pegs for my 300 too.
Absolutely want to see the finished bike.
This rocks! Good luck!! You'll want more fuel? Super cool to see you guys tackle this stuff. Can't wait for more!! Rock🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Vstrom 800DE owner.. Not a popular bike but man its a great bike.
Looking forward to some follow up builds. Hope you are planning to share your trials and tribulations in the lead up to and during the race.
There will be more coming!
¡Moto Chingon!
cool video.
You can do it!!!!
Good job, God bless
Enjoyed video and good luck at race. I wonder though how much all those upgrades cost? Possibly more than actual bike…
Pure sickness!! You got this one, man that bike is bad.
This bike is beautiful
Genial saludos cordiales desde Patagonia Chile.
Awesome build been thinking about a vstrom to go with my drz as a better road bike
awesome
Wonder when seat concepts will be coming out with the 800de seats
They are working on it now. Get your order in.
Pretty sick build for sure. Will def. have to follow for the full build and ride. I might have done something different. If the off set is similar or would compensate for the longer fork why not just use the RM clamps and make the stem from the DR fit that? Also could have used the lighter Mako360 with damper sub mount the RM clamps. Same concept as the flexx bars you have, but uses standard oversized tapered bars like the Protaper, that you can choose a bend that maybe adjusts for height or pulls back a bit. I have a Mako360 with a scotts damper on off road bike. I also have a 07 DR650 with a cogent shock and set up on it. As well as a Ohlins cartridge emulator valves up front It's been a very nice set up. I have shorter legs and have to do the same thing on my 650. Going to try those mouse balls for my next set on my off road bike.
Offset was quite different on the RMZ clamps, so we decided it was best to use the V-Strom clamps. I'd like to have a custom top clamp machines to move the bars forward a bit more to make standing while climbing and accelerating a bit easier. The Mousse Balls are awesome off-road as long as you are not riding highway or a super high speeds for a long time (just like any mousse).
Toss those worthless headlights and put on something rally wicked. Would be nice to see an integrated tower lighted setup in addition to the stock or a stock replacement. Don't want to be racing at night without some type of improvement.
I wonder if your team could to the same custom to Transalp.
My favorite movie quote, from Star Trek 6, The undiscovered Country, when Sulu is in pursuit of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey that has assassinated Chancellor Gorkon.
As they close:
Sulu: In range?
Helmsman: No yet, sir.
Sulu: Come on. Come on.
Helmsman: She'll fly a part.
Sulu: Fly her a part, then!
Please, fly that 800DE BIG a part!
The "rad" meter went of the scale!!!
I'm a product of the 80s.... haha
Wonder if the original wheels from the DE V-Strom would fit my '02 DL 1000 V-Strom...
Say, that's a nice bike...
Great Build! I've been waiting for this one for a while! :)))
Technical question here! The A60 rims are limited to a 18x2.15" rear. Usually everyone I'ev seen or talked to that replaced the rims/wheels on they Trail bikes (T7, 7/890R, etc) I've only seen them using the Takasago 18x2.5" rear rims/wheels. Did you choose to do a compromise (if there even exists one) to be able to go with the A60 rims vs the Takasago? How does that influence the tire fitment (the sizes I'd say probably 140 or 120 on the 2.5" rim vs definitely 120 on the 2.15" rim? Don't know if I'm making sense here. Off-road tires sizes vs rim width is still very confusing to me :D)
We chose the A60 for the strength, but we also wanted to runa "dirt-bike" sized rear tire. The Dunlop EN91 we used is 140/80-18 which is just slightly larger than a 120. If we were doing more street riding and using a larger tire a 2.5 could be better.
Please share a final price for all the mods, or at least an estimate of what someone paying retail price would pay. I realize there's some pre production and custom mods here. It would give good context!
A list of parts and mods would be nice for all your builds in case any viewers wanted to do the same things to their bikes
BA! 🤘
❤ Suzuki lovers will love you :)
Me idé Mus Boll 🎾 👍
K&N filters don't filter more. They in fact filter less by allowing more air through...
nothing quite like dropping $25k on a build (above the bike purchase price)! haha
For a germany guy as i am it's funny to See that the custum build rear Shock, Made in the US, is fitted with a german made spring by "Eibach"
Eibach makes great springs.
I noticed what looked like was a K&N air filter.
Ive been told for years worst thing to put on a bike yet used them for years on off road vehicles.
So whats the professional opinion?
DNA filters are different.
Good luck.
What are the costs of that upgrade ? In addition and compared to the stock price ?
It's difficult for us to put a price on it because many things were first or one-off custom. I would say nearly $10k? Once the race is over and we are back home, I'll get out the calculator and let you know....
Any chance of weighing it when finished?
We just did. 473 pounds full of gas. The stocker is 507 full of gas. 34 pounds less!
@@MustMoto Awesome Thanks!
thanks
could you put finnish subtitles...
nowadays , they say , it can be done with a couple of clicks
do you know the weight difference, before and after?
Dropped from 507 full of gas on our scales to 473 full of gas.
And the sound with the yoshimura??
❤❤❤
where can I buy this element that is screwed to the tank and has a rod for the steering damper? Is that the man from Germany? any contact details for him?
Great project, I'm also modifying mine 800de(steering damper and 2 cm longer suspension travel is enough for me)
That's from Hessler Rally Team in Germany
@@MustMoto Stefan is the maaan!
Music listing?
I wish motorcycle "engineers" would watch videos like this, and understand THIS is what people wanted in the first place!
I disagree. The Vstrom was never a dirt only bike. I'll bet more people ride it as a street bike. Companies are there to provide the best bang for buck to make the bike accessible to as many people as possible, increasing sales and revenue. This bike built here would be crazy expensive from the factory and quite a niche vehicle. Low volume manufacturing would increase the cost exponentially.
This is all ran by numbers and finance. Engineers and designers would love to make something like this if they could, but a big part of their job is Value Engineering (V.E). Making parts good, but within reach of the average consumer. It is the hardest part of the job. Building a crazy ultra performer isn't that hard, the hard part is making it affordable and making money from it.

@@ianjohnson5365 thanks for your insightful and informative reply.
I ❤ bike 800de
You guys doing a giveaway for the other Yoshimura muffler?😛
unfortunately, it will only fit this bike due to the modificatiosn to clear fo the extra travel of the swingarm.
@@CWjustindawes sad😁
The bored out triple clamps scare me
that bike will RIP!
