Normal to me is being the same as most people, something like that. I'm Dutch too and I love to stand out in the crowd, you don't have to be like everybody else, (whoever everybody else is..🤔) Being an individual is much more important to me and probably to loads of other people too, Dutch or not. I'm glad you had fun making the video, but all your examples of "doe normaal" center around Dutch accomplishments. As a Dutchman I can tell you that "doe normaal" is about checking your attitude and using common sense rather than what you can achieve. And I'm sorry to say, but my fellow countrymen are more and more looking to the US as an example, which isn't common sense.

About the nutrition score. I believe the score is comparitively between the same category. For instance, the B of the Dorito's is compared to all other chips/crisps and not food as a whole. So it might be a B for chips but maybe a D or E for food as a whole. So be carefull when choosing an item and thinking it's healthy because it says B. Correct me if I am wrong.

I posted this on another video about "Doe Normaal" and think I should post it here as well
I feel people from outside the Netherlands misundersand the "doe normaal" idea. It is perfectly fine to stand out and be better than others. It is more about how you deal with it. Bragging about it or looking down on others because they perform less is what is talked about. So you are an ace in IT, or Law, or Science... so what.. others might have skills you don't have. In the end, we are all needed in this society, the scientist is not more or less important than the baker or the garbage collector. That is the idea behind "doe normaal". Sure.. celebrate your achievements but don't go around being elitist. :)
Notable Dutch inventions beside Bluetooth and WiFi: The Submarine, The Firehose, The compact Cassette, the CD and DVD and BlueRay. the Micro AND Telescope, the Eye test, "Fair Trade", Hardcore and Hardstyle, trtiangulation, The Mercator (world) map and the Atlas, the Continental drif hypothesis, Python, and that is just a "short" list of inventions and inovations.

    • @jacksfields
      @jacksfields 3 дні тому +18

Exactly this! It's not so much about what you're doing, but how you're dealing with it. A better, more true to form translation, would be: "be humble". But with the Dutch being the blunt folk that they are, it's become what it is: "just act normal, you're acting crazy enough" (full literal translation of the saying)

Like central heating, drinkwater from the tap that wont make you sick, working traficlights, cops that you cant bribe etc. Also, the some of the underground garbage container that you show in your video @ 3:49 have sensors that send data to a company which uses this data to predict when it should be emptied based on how fast garbage is collected. Routes are dynamically planned. Wastevision is one of the company's that does this here.

Hi, I'm Dutch and I feel like a lot of the things that we Dutch do, create or invent is driven by efficiency. Work smart instead of work hard. And this drive for efficiency is also one of the reasons that we are very direct; transparant communication helps with trading and doing business in an efficient way. We go straight towards our goal and are very good at creating some consensus so that we can move forward. Also, the freedom of expression that we feel here to say what we think sets the stage for a lot of creativity and innovation.

I recently read a book about the catastrophic 1953 flood that gave rise to the Deltaplan. What struck me most that it was caused in large part by sheer neglect and incompetence. Before 1953 there was hardly a unified strategy to combat the sea, and the rules that did exist where often undermined, sometimes literally by breaking dikes to harvest salt on the flooded land. It was really, really bad. Many officials were asleep, the telegraph warning from the meteorological society only reached three people in Zeeland because subscription was voluntary. The majority of the waterboards or dike overseers didn't get any warning. Waterworks that did exist where often neglected or insufficient. And on top of that the Germans had build trenches and bunkers in many of them. It was an absolute mess. The Dutch learned their lesson the hard way. Also much of the reclaimed land used to be land, that was until people dug out all of the peat or simply due to sinking of the drying soil. Large parts are still lost to this day, like the Dollard. The Netherlands has dozens of lost villages that remain submerged. So "winning" yes. But not only. And not always.

Of course it sucks to be told to act normal when you're trying to be creative. So creative people leave the polder and join other groups where being creative is the norm.

Neeltje Jans, would be a nice one, a lot of information about the "war against the sea". And a nice saying: "Hier gaan over het tij: de maan, de wind en wij". Free translated: "The tide is ruled by the moon, the wind and us." Just the whole Deltaworks is awsome. (Afsluitduik is also a good one.)

  • @DenUitvreter
    @DenUitvreter 3 дні тому +7

"Doe normaal" is still pretty literal, as in normative. It's pressing someone to respect social norms, like not littering bottle caps. It's not about not standing out, it's about not acting like you are better or more important than others, to take more liberties. Loudly revving your engine to show off your car for example. If you just gently rumble your Lamborghini towards the open road no one will say "doe normaal".
The public stock company was actually the specifically Dutch thing, with lots of very ordinary Dutch buying stock of the VOC, also for the fact that it was going to take the war for independence to the Asian interests of the Portuguese and Spain. But the VOC soon saw much more opportunity than initially anticipated so when the carpenters, butchers and maids would sell their stock to the rich merchants who were building generational wealth anyway, the VOC could reinvest the profits instead of paying dividends. The rich merchants could afford to wait patiently for much bigger ROI much latere so those were willing to buy the ordinary people's shares. Eventually the VOC didn't pay dividend for it's first 31 years, but grew quite big.

About the nutritional score, When you see A on a bag of chips, it doesn't mean healthy chips, al it means is that among chips this has rating A, so there are chips that might have more salt and fat, and they would be B/C/D.

From my mother, it meant, hey, tone it down a little, and read the room, there are more people around and everyone is hearing you in the entire neighborhood.
Unspoken of course, other than "hey, doe es normaal... " The "then you're acting crazy enough" part, is said once or twice, but after that, only the first part ever makes it. It was a gentle chastising.

Creating a tulip bulb market exchange then crashing it, centuries before the USA reinvented a stock market exchange crash about a 100 years ago😪. Inventing a clock (in the 1600's) that would remain working OK on a ship (the sail ships of that era would be bad for a 'normal' pendulum clock). Actually the nutri-score and attached cap of the bottles are the Dutch way of implementing European initiatives. And those nutri-scores can be deceptive. Dorito's are only a rated B because they fall into the same category as chips/crisps. So it's comparison within its own product group. But it's not always clear or logical in which food category a product belongs or should belong. Nordic counties have had a similar system for over a decade now. countries like Germany and Belgium are implementing similar system but are still working on preventing Dorito's getting the same score as carrots.

First of all: I love your videos. Discovered you only recently and I want to say your video quality is really professional, your content is funny yet informative, and you are very good at looking at things from more than 1 side. And you provide a different point of view on my puny country :)
Now, I love your dual interpretation of "doe normaal":
1 - the Dutch saying "act normal, that's crazy enough". I think this is changing a bit due to global influences (yeah thanks USA), but I think the Dutch spirit, much like the German spirit, is quite down to earth. We don't brag very much, probably because coming from a tiny country we are used to not being that influential, well known, etcetera.
2 - there are many things which we Dutch think are the norm ("normaal"), because we forget that our country is very well organised. We've had a lot of stability during the last 200 years (minus WW2 of course) and our economy has steadily grown so as a country we have been able to invest in many things which organise our life very well. I also think that the fact we are so small make things a lot easier. Also, dare I say this to an American: a functioning political system in which people actually make decisions which make all of our lives better, REALLY HELPS. That's all I'm going to say about that ;)
Looking forward to your next video! Come to Leiden some time and I can show you how the Dutch government supports people with a handicap :)

There are a few factors that helped the Dutch to become this innovative.
Of course, the water-fight. Much like Denmark is an innovative country, or Singapore is so innovative; water is the the biggest threat of them all.
Second: A big concentration of highly educated people on a small area. Once again; like Singapore, or what Hong Kong used to be.
Third: The Spanish Inquisition (nobody expected that, but it's true!) 🙃
Thanks to the Spanish invasion of what is now Belgium, a LOT of talent from Ghent, Bruges, Brussels and mainly Antwerp fled to "higher ground", meaning the unoccupied regions above the big rivers in The Netherlands. This literally doubled the amount of artists, scientists, philosophers and money influx in the Amsterdam/Rotterdam/The Hague triangle within a decade or so. That's what kickstarted the "Golden Century" of The Netherlands: Wáy too much talent on a wáy too small area NOT to Break Out.
Of course there are a lot more reasons, but these 3 really, really count.
And indeed, "Doe normaal" is all about not bragging about your achievements, but treating them as normal. "Yeah, I did that. Let's move on."
Which of course stimulates innovation, since the attention sphere is not captured by 1 big ego bragging about itself, but by "wauw! How can we improve thát?".

  • @KLKarin-bu2vu

Basically "doe normaal" is more like "you can be extraordinary in many ways, just don't give yourself airs because of it" - so don't boast, don't show off, don't think you deserve special treatment just because you're rich/famous/successful.
And another way it's often used is to tell people to not exaggerate, or draw attention to themselves in an obnoxious way. Don't play the clown, don't show off, don't try to draw attention to yourself by being ridiculous or noisy. Be the best possible version of YOU, don't try to be something you're not.
Basically you say it to people who are making a scene - whether it is because they are doing the "don't you know who I am?" thing, or because they're trying to draw attention to themselves in some way.
It's not about not doing extraordinary things or trying to make things better - it's about not showing off. For instance, Dutch schools don't have things like "valedictorians" - there's no competition to see who has the best grades. You're all supposed to do your best, and if you get higher grades than others, there's no reward. You might get praise from your teacher, but if you let it go to your head the rest of the class will quickly tell you to "do normaal".

In my town in central British Columbia Canada, we primarily drive trucks. I'd say 75% have or prefer trucks. I drive a Ram 1500. Side note, Mexico has lables with foods with excessive colories

The nutrition score is based on comparison within groups of similar products. So B does not nevessarily mean it’s good, but within the range of chips it has a good value. Same as pork tenderloin would maybe get an A and bacon an F, since tenderloin is very low in fat as opposed to bacon.

The reason we are always telling eachother to doe normaal is because they are always acting crazy, so the popularity of the phrase doesnt mean we want everything to be normal, its used to temper our crazy friends.

"Doe normaal" is mostly used as a warning statement to tell the other person to act according to our cultural/social norms and values or otherwise "get the wind from the front" 😂("De wind van voren krijgen") eg: Trouble.
