Daniel Smith's versions of Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber are so flipping beautiful. And they both neutralise so well! Nothing else compares. Probably the most essential colours on my palette next to a red, yellow and blue. Ultramarine blue and Burnt umber/sienna together create the most beautiful grey tones. I use them together a lot in wildlife sketches and paintings.
Agreed! I tried to kid myself and preferred the Daniel Smith's burnt sienna but after a while I put WN burnt sienna back on the palette and mixed a neutral with phtallo blue and a mix with ultramarine. I then remembered how rich and satisfying WNs version is! Daniel Smith has a pigment, Roasted French Ocre that makes awesome neutrals mixed with blues and while I'm at it I'll also suggest DS English Red Earth or Italian Venetian Red(both PR101) mixed with cerulean blue for another great neutral
I can't escape earth tones... My palettes always end up with so many! Sometimes it feels a bit redundant, but they all behave uniquely in the end. Lovely showcase.
In earth pigments crucial term for color definition isn't only an pigment index and chemical definition, but exact location soil are excavated. In Soviet period we use Karelian and Caucasian earth pigments, and, when "iron curtain" in economics dismissed, it was very surprising to see how classical Italian and Cyprus pigmented earthes are differ from those, we are already used to paint.
When I do an underpainting, I'll usually use burnt umber. Then I'll use burnt sienna (and raw umber if I don't have an ochre) for getting nice tones on the top layers when adding color. Thanks for sharing!
This was very helpful. A number of paint companies produce convenience colors with the addition of PBr7. When I try to mix them on my own, it can make a big difference whether the pigment leans more red or yellow or green. Thank you very much.
I used to use Burnt Umber because I notice that I use a lot of brown in landscape, but unfortunately, after using Burnt Umber, I realize that it's not that useful and I rarely use Burnt Umber alone... so since I'm still mixing my own brown using Burnt Umber as a shortcut, I switch it with Pyrrole Orange R.S (PO73), that is a much more useful color and it play much better with my palette than Burnt Umber.
Thanks Teoh. I just started to use raw umber for when I need a cool brown or very diluted makes a nice cool color for sand when using rough paper and dry brush technique. 😁
I love transparent red oxide and TYO (DS) for great granulating textures. I use yellow orche ,raw sienaand burnt siena for figure paintings. Burnt umber or raw is not so necessary for me as I can get the hue by mixing blue with burnt siena . For staining underpaintings I use quinacridone earth colors.
Enjoy these videos on same pigment colours. The Amiata one has been on my wish list, but I've hesitated since it might be too similar to Quin. Gold. Greenish Raw Umber was an interesting one to me but I don't own it. I just wondered if it would be useful for botanical paintings.

I don't think I have any of those colors. I know they are different pigments; but, I have always used New Gamboge as a substitute for Raw Sienna and Quinacridone Burnt Orange as a substitute for Burnt Sienna. I have a brown in my Schminke travel paletter with the number of PBr 33 and the name Walnut Brown. It's similar to at least one of the browns you demonstrated.
Yessss perfect timing for this episode. I've been trying to decide which brown to add to my palette since I've only got raw sienna for my skin tones and everything else brown. I've been considering raw umber because I can mix something similar to burnt sienna and burnt umber with the colours I have but it's difficult to get that cool brown. My concern is also whether or not I'm even going to need a cool brown since most of my paintings tend to be on the warmer side haha I'm just waiting for an excuse to buy some dot charts before I spend the money on the tubes. Have you noticed any change in DS burnt umber. I use it with Ultramarine for darks and interesting granulation. But the latest tube is making ugly separations in washes.
Maybe its the lighting but my daniel smith burnt sienna is darker than what is pictured here. This looks like the Winsor Newton version of burnt sienna. Maybe the hues change by batch but that is a really noticeable difference.
TIL, Sienna and Umber are both PBr7. Perhaps I might need brown like Burnt Umber on my watercolors if I don't have the time to mix my own browns. Also, is Van Dyck Brown the same pigment as PBr7? I'm curious on why there are no videos about it despite artists like Bob Ross often using it.
I apologise if I sound rude but it's like the trillionth video of yours I have to click away from and find another video. And I wish I didn't have to because you are a far better personality and more enjoyable to watch with great looking high resolution video etc... however it doesn't matter if it's 16K ultra-mega-HD, I still wouldn't watch someone swatching water on cellulose.

A good Raw Umber has a green cast, and is used in portraiture for shadows as the green cast neutralizes warm flesh tone.

I love raw umber with both Quins and Phthalo colors to create interesting passages in nature/landscape work.

They should look similar to the ones from Daniel Smith. Names may not be the same though. WN uses PR101 as Burnt Sienna

I dont really paint (prefer pencils and markers) but the raw umbers scream environment painting to me, rocks and trees and all that :-)

Monte Akita’s Natural Sienna is so versatile
Funny is that the Monte Amiata raw sienna I buy as pure pigment is PY43.

Yeah, I really prefer mixing blacks by mixing PBr pigments with blues. PBk pigments just seems to make colors flat.
Did you buy your paper in some shop or in the internet?
Bought at local shop. The paper I usually use for my UA-cam videos is Daler Rowney Aquafine. For proper art or sketch I use better quality paper

I’ve not heard of them. I’ve too much paper to try currently so not sure when I will get to them
