Perylene violet is one of my favorite colors and is a NECESSARY part of my palette. I love mixing perylene violet with other colors as well as using it on its own. I’ve also found that it’s GREAT mixed with....hm....I can’t remember what I use but anyway, it’s great for a warm midtown skin. Probably I use it with Quin Gold since I’m also completely addicted to Quin Gold. =>.
Oto Kano I’m not really sold on the maroon if I’m honest, but not for any real reason. 🤷♀️ just doesn’t thrill me I guess. And yeah, the skin mixes perylene violet makes are gorgeous! I painted half an Egyptian goddess (maybe. Not really sure.) once and I think it was perylene violet and burnt sienna and her skin was soooo prettttyyyyy.
I now have a split fullpan in a couple of my palettes that contains perylene violet and perylene green. These neutralize to a deep, dark black and are useful shadow colours alone and together for everything from red roses to spring green leaves and everything in between.
Perylene Green will actually mix pitch black with nearly anything in the red family. The mix with Perylene violet is actually a very dark....purpley indigo? But can go so dark valued it doesn't matter that it's not pure black, it LOOKS black...but also shadowy :)
I used perylene violet in my gouache rotation all the time. It's super dark in the Winsor & Newton gouache and makes a wonderful warm substitute for blacks.
I would absolutely use both colours! I love deep reds and use them a lot. I love how smooth and rich both of these are, and the way they mix and react to creative techniques. Thanks so much for this comparison. The perylene group of colours are calling me, and oh, no, there is a place in my large palette that needs to be filled!
I can totally see why you love both colors. I am having a seriously hard time trying to decide between the two. They are both very beautiful in their own unique ways.
These colours are both super dreamy! Wow. I don't have room in my current palette, but it totally makes me want to make a goth palette of just dark, deep colours such as these. Those salt washes turned out so gorgeous too!
Oto Kano Yes, definitely! Also indanthrone blue. Payne's grey, because I love it so. Shadow violet? Permanent brown is quite deep, but I think it might be too similar to perylene maroon. Ugh, a goth palette would be so much fun to make!
Perylene violet wins hands down! It’s a color I’ve been wanting for a while but after seeing the mixes it can make, It’s going into my shopping cart. Beautiful. I do mostly florals and this will fit perfectly into my palette. Thanks, Oto!
I would love a video on all the perylene colors. They’re all pretty new to me and I’m trying to decide which ones I want to buy and which ones I could do without.
OTO these are both wonderful. I tend to lean more to the violet but I really love the maroon more. I would have to scream uncle on this and get them both. I actually kept passing up on this video because I didn't think that they would be colors I would be interested in. This series has done something amazing with me. It has taught me something I wanted to understand more and that was color mixing. I agree I like the mixing better on the violet, but looking at the neutrals you could get with the maroon makes me think that I would want that one as well. Thanks again for the education on colors. This series has made me a very happy girl.
Hi Oto! Thanks for a great comparison! What would you say is the colour difference between Perylene Violet and Naphthamide Maroon from Daniel Smith? Thank you!
That veining with the salt and the violet 😮 I think that's on my wish list now! I love this series it's helpful since ds colors are soo pretty be soo expensive for me
I love Perylene Maroon, and u se it a lot, but now that I see P. Violet, I MUST have it too!!! I can imagine using it beside green gold to paint figs!! Great comparison. I would be really interested to compare P. Violet with Naphthamide Maroon.
I love love love the newer perylene colours! They have this beautiful muted.. down to earth vibe to me which draws me to them. I'm loving how more companies are making perylene colours more common such as the greens and brownish reds instead of just the bright reds that were on the market for some time.
Perylene Maroon by Schmincke is an absolute staple on my palette, it's one of these paints that I really could not live without. I even frequently mix my blacks with it in combination with Phtalo Green. I haven't used the Daniel Smith version, though this is one of the colors where I've heard from other people that Schmincke's version is superior so I think that i'm just gonna stick with it haha. This one does look more brownish and less saturated than mine but it's hard to judge on screen.
Perylene! Perylene! Perylene! Perylene Maroon is one of my favorite colors and I have been curious for a long time how it compares with the violet. They are both beautiful colors. I often use Perylene Maroon with Perylene Green to make blacks. I also use it in darker skin tones as a warming color. I’m curious though because the two Perylene Maroons I have ( Schmincke and Eventually Everything Mixes) seem like the hue more like a mix between these two colors than anything else. Maybe it’s my screen? Now I want to compare! Oh and yes! A video about all the Perylene colors!
I tend to like cool rather than warm colors so the violet seems better to me! As someone else commented, the maroon looks like dried blood to me too! Some nice muted mixes with it. Cool results with the salt!
yes to the perylene video! wow i have no perylene colors but just fell in love with both of these! i have a question about your mixing colors, do you go for half n half when you mix or just whatever looks good? so glad i found you and look forward to learning much from you. thanks for sharing!
Thank you, that's a great question! I mix whatever that looks good. Especially when mixing strong colors like these ones, if I mix half and half, most of them will just look Perylene! For this series, I wanted to show how each colour influences other colours, rather than takes over. Does that makes sense?
lol yeah ok, it is rather overpowering from what i have seen & all perylene colors would be a bit boring. i have been watching more of your vids today & i've got to say i just love your thoughts on art, colors, watercolors and just life in general. keep being you
Please do an episode showcasing all the perylene colors (how many are there?) I don’t know if you can compare different brands (I cannot make up my mind between Daniel Smith and Winsor and Newton Pérylene violet). Thank you in advance
I really love perylene maroon because (and I realize this sounds morbid) it looks very close to drying blood, so it's great for painting scrapes and cuts for when I paint a portrait of a character who's been in a fight (it happens a lot). Pyrrol red with a tiiiiiiiiny bit of phthalo blue is perfect for fresh blood IMO.
of course! It's the twelve colours round the colour wheel. I picked the colours closest to the twelve you need. It can totally be other paint colours, as long as they are the right hue (kind of color).
Great video Oto! It was so helpful seeing both of these colors as I'm not as familiar with the maroon and it's nice to see the comparison. What I want to know is the difference between perylene violet and and naphthimide maroon! :) I mean, I have both but it's still so hard to choose between them!! 😂
wooo yes I'd be quite up for comparing the pyerylene violet and napthimide maroon! I don't have the Napth Maroon though so maybe if you could send me a sample?
Are you sure you added enough Perylene Violet to the color mixes? I thought a dark color like that would have much more of an effect on the mixes, especially the greens and yellows.
You are absolutely right, I only added a bit of both perylenes into the color mixes. As you said, they are so strong, they very easily overtake any other colors. So I wanted to show how adding a little bit can influence the other colors, rather than end up with a chart of 12 swatches with little differences between them. Your point is noted though, thank you, I will bare that in mind next time when I am mixing with a strong color.
Hi can i ask if you had to choose between DS nepthemide mroon and WN permeant mauve. Which would you choose. I have been watching some of your videos and would like to add some of the colours these look very similar.
I can't find anything on these two colors in the W&N acrylic line, and if there is any less color shift with their "revolutionary clear acrylic binder". Everything I can find online only covers the watercolor versions of these pigments. I would LOVE to hear from anyone with any experience with these two colors in acrylic form.
I love this series so much... but it makes me really want to buy and buy and buy new paints for my palette. :D I'm also a fan of muted colors these two react so different, that I would love to have both. :) The Perylene Violet is so beautiful mixed with the Turqoise.
Aw so happy to hear that you are enjoying this series. Yes, I am having difficulties choosing between these two colours, even after having made the video!
I started a list of "colors I need" to complete my palette (until now all Schmincke and W&N) and ordered my first DS tubes yesterday... Undersea Green, Phthalo Turqoise and Sap Green (because the Schmincke one is just not right). Your tests helped me a lot to decide, what I would like to use. :)
woooo those are all very lovely colors. They are your first DS colors? Really hope you love them. so glad the videos helped you pick the colors. Please let me know how you get on with your brand new DS colors.
Yeah, they will be my first DS paints. :) I got a tip just recently, where I can get the DS paints for prices, that are ok, so I used the opportunity. The palette, that I have now, lacks some nice greens, so that's what I ordered. Val from Drawing with Fire also suggested to get the Undersea Green and Sap Green. So many wonderful artists can't be wrong with that, right? :D
Hello. I have followed the link to your website via this site and Facebook but the site seems to be secured (https). I would love to buy some of the gauze you use in these videos and I’m having trouble locating any! Btw, is it stretch or non-stretch (non, I would have thought)? Help!! Excellent vids btw, really useful and easy to watch. Hope you carry on for aaaaages! At least the gauze is the cheaper thing to buy from your wonderful tests etc. as I can’t stop buying DS paints without you encouraging me too!
I've used perylene maroon forever and now must get perylene violet. I need to stop watching these videos. It cost too much money. Lol
The P Violet gets me in the feels. Love that gorgeous color.
wooooo yes the Perylene Violet is very expressive in texture, and moody in color. It is SO nice.
Can totally see why you love this color so much! It is a deep, rich, luscious color. What do you think of the maroon?
That's just what I thought, that it would be perfect to mix skin tones with both colors actually :)
Not really sure.) once and I think it was perylene violet and burnt sienna and her skin was soooo prettttyyyyy.

wooo I am going to have to try mixing the perylene violet and green. Thank you very much for your tip!

ohmygod please do make a video about all the perylene colors. I absolutely love them, especially p maroon and p green
lol I will try make it happen for you!
Yes. Please!
Yes please
Please do a video on Naphthamide maroon. Thank you!
I used perylene violet in my gouache rotation all the time. It's super dark in the Winsor & Newton gouache and makes a wonderful warm substitute for blacks.
Mary Sanche There is perylene violet gouache!?!
I wanted to ask this exact question! There is a perylene Violet Gouache!?!??!
Yes!! Winsor & Newton makes one, it's divine!
Thanks Oto for the evaluation!!!! I keep rewatching your videos, so helpful!
These colours are both super dreamy! Wow. I don't have room in my current palette, but it totally makes me want to make a goth palette of just dark, deep colours such as these. Those salt washes turned out so gorgeous too!
omg a goth palette? I LOVE IT. Woooo what else would go in there? Carbazole violet for sure?
Oto Kano Yes, definitely! Also indanthrone blue. Payne's grey, because I love it so. Shadow violet? Permanent brown is quite deep, but I think it might be too similar to perylene maroon. Ugh, a goth palette would be so much fun to make!
What about something like Perylene green as well? we need a deep pure red too, a blood red color.
Oto Kano Yes, definitely perylene green! Hmmmm, not sure of a good deep blood colour. I'll definitely keep an eye out.
Perylene violet wins hands down! It’s a color I’ve been wanting for a while but after seeing the mixes it can make, It’s going into my shopping cart. Beautiful. I do mostly florals and this will fit perfectly into my palette. Thanks, Oto!
You are so welcome Christina! Really hope you enjoy adding Perylene Violet to your palette, what a great choice.
I want both, and I want them now! An all perylene palette would be so cool. Thank you Oto, great video!
lol they are such yummy colors. I am also looking forward to seeing all the perylene colors together.
I would love a video on all the perylene colors. They’re all pretty new to me and I’m trying to decide which ones I want to buy and which ones I could do without.

I think I've just discovered my two favorite colors ever. 💞
YES! So happy for you!
That veining with the salt and the violet 😮 I think that's on my wish list now! I love this series it's helpful since ds colors are soo pretty be soo expensive for me

Honestly, I can't leave any of the 5 Daniel Smith perylene colors out of my palette now. I love them!
Yes! Please do a video of all perylene colors!
I love love love the newer perylene colours! They have this beautiful muted.. down to earth vibe to me which draws me to them. I'm loving how more companies are making perylene colours more common such as the greens and brownish reds instead of just the bright reds that were on the market for some time.
Me too. The dark earthy reds and greens are so beautiful in the Perylene range!
Perylene violet 😍😍😍. Looks amazing. Looks similar to my favorite color (among cerulean) from the Holbein's 24 colors box i have...mineral violet.
Perylene Maroon by Schmincke is an absolute staple on my palette, it's one of these paints that I really could not live without. I even frequently mix my blacks with it in combination with Phtalo Green. yes a video about all the pyrelene colors would be very nice!!!
I would love to see a comparison of all the perylene colors! Great vid!!
I like both. Perylene violet is interesting near Potters Pink, well I think ! 😀
Perylene! Perylene! Perylene!

do you want me to add those two colours to your package?
Oto Kano That would be amazing! 🙏🏿🤗
I tend to like cool rather than warm colors so the violet seems better to me! As someone else commented, the maroon looks like dried blood to me too! Some nice muted mixes with it. Cool results with the salt!

lol good to know, good to know :)
i greatly appreciate this information 😌
i think you can mix get a maroon with the violet+mid red but i'm not sure how to get the hue of perylene violet using the maroon
I've yet to try the perylene colours but definetly want to, they look so dark ad moody, you could use the maroon as a alizarin crimson substitute.
I can really see you enjoying using these colours in your botanical paintings!
Can you explain the reasons behind the 12 colors you chose to mix with each of the subject colors. Thank you! (Trying to learn color mixing 😊)
of course! It's the twelve colours round the colour wheel. I picked the colours closest to the twelve you need. It can totally be other paint colours, as long as they are the right hue (kind of color).
Oto Kano most helpful! Thanks!!
I'm not sure I'd get either, but I'm leaning towards perylene violet.
Great video Oto! It was so helpful seeing both of these colors as I'm not as familiar with the maroon and it's nice to see the comparison. Oto Kano I can do that :)
woooo! Thank you Denise! I will make sure the two colors are tested thoroughly! I think there needs to be a season 2 of the DS Color Showdown ;)
Are you sure you added enough Perylene Violet to the color mixes? I thought a dark color like that would have much more of an effect on the mixes, especially the greens and yellows.

How does the Roman szmal perylene violet compare to the Daniel Smith one? I personally feel that it has a different feel to it.
Hi can i ask if you had to choose between DS nepthemide mroon and WN permeant mauve. Which would you choose. I have been watching some of your videos and would like to add some of the colours these look very similar.

Very very interesting and well done video.......thank you👍. What would be a good substitude for perylene violet?
That perylene violet fook yummy! I certainly see that in my future :) I think doing the perylenes is a great idea.
Yes it's such a beautiful color!
Try making a color showdown on Phthalo Blue Red Shade vs. Phthalo Blue Green Shade. Or Phthalo Green Yellow Shade vs. Phthalo Green Blue Shade.
Are you planning on a series like this with other brands?
Love them BOTH
Can you compare Perylene Maroon and Garnet Genuine?
I like perylene maroon, it works so well in shadows and when mixing skintones.
That is so good to know, thank you for sharing with us Cyane!
gorgeous colors! Going to buy both
I like both
I love this series so much... but it makes me really want to buy and buy and buy new paints for my palette. :D I'm also a fan of muted colors these two react so different, that I would love to have both. :) The Perylene Violet is so beautiful mixed with the Turqoise.

Both are fabulous colors! Tfs 😃

Hi Otto, I love the way you analize your colors, can I grab your idea?
Oto. You should change your light coz i think its too yellow
The maroon is very rusty. It reminds me of more...sanguine... application or Mars scapes
Lovely colors of wine. Hahahahah 💖
I agree! There's even a color called Bordeaux!
White Nights: PR179 - 365 Venice Purple; PV55 - 627 Perylene Violet.
PV55 is a quinacridone pigment. PV29 is perylene violet.
