  • This is Trwyn Du (lit. 'black nose') Lighthouse at Penmon Point on Anglesey. The lighthouse marks the midpoint between the island of Anglesey and the small island of Ynys Seiriol (lit. 'beautiful island'), better known as Puffin Island. The lighthouse was built at a cost of £11,000 (more than £1 million today) but despite standing at 26 metres tall it took 3 years to build, finally being completed in 1838. In 1922 the lighthouse became one of the first in the world to be fully automated and switched to solar power in 1996. In 2019 plans were made to replace the traditional bell with a fog horn, but this was met with opposition. When we visited neither the bell or fog horn were in use. The bell usually chimes once every 30 seconds.

For some reason the bell wasn't chiming on that day. I think they supposedly replaced it with an electric one around 2018 ish but I went in 2020 and the bell was chiming then.
