Ford from 2017-2023 “that hard shifting and clunks are normal characteristics of the transmission” Ford in 2024 “well we got a fix for the transmission and it’s a new CDF drum. Also, you are SOL if you’re out of your warranty”
My 2021 F-250 Slams into reverse and drive, about every 3rd or 4th try. The other times its smooth. Think this is what's wrong with mine? It has no codes
There is a TSB 22-2252, where dealership can flash the TCM, and has fixed that problem for some people. The flash fixed the harsh Reverse and Drive shift for me, but the grinding/vibration on the 4-3 downshift was still present. I had low line pressure b/c of the bushing blocking the fluid passages, and blew out the teflon sealing ring @@Jewalston
@@o_issues_o Ok. I've been watching these videos between this channel and PTT on these 10R140 Trans for a while. I just called the dealer and set an appt. It's also extremely violent when it shifts into 4wd low. It yanks the entire truck forward.
They can flash your TCM, and then you will need to drive a couple hundred miles for the trans to relearn shift strategies. If it continues to do this after that, I would say it is this CDF bushing, or maybe your valve body causing the problem. @@Jewalston
Thank you for covering more on this transmission. I own one and it’s got me worried but more prepared now. Im usually the first to say extended warranties are a scam but it might come out cheaper in the end if I keep this truck for a long time.
Ford should be offering an limited extended warranty on top of the power train warranty just for the transmission just because they've created so many problems with this design. If they really fixed the problem, it shouldn't cost them anything and it would show they stand behind their products. Asking the customer to spend a few more thousand dollars after spending an average 70k on their vehicles to begin with to fix a poor design I'd shady.
I used to be a Ford fan. I have a 1997 F-350. This is the last Ford I will own. I went to Nissan and moved on to Toyota. I wish Ford would make quality vehicles like they did before 2004.
Dude crazy thing is the 6 speed was proven.. I’ve had 3 6.7’s all over 250k miles driven hard/deleted with tunes never once had any issues with trans lol .. hard working farm trucks pulling trailers heavy loads cross country .. sad ford is going down this route

I had this tsb completed in September of last year, took them 3 months to do it due to parts being unavailable. The Ford dealer I went to did provide a loaner for the whole 3 months they had it. I haven't put that many miles on it only a few thousand but at least its not clunking and banging into 3rd and 4th gear anymore.
It would have a very hard down shit into 4th or 3rd gear and it would feel like you were lightly rear ended, it was hard enough to jerk the truck. @@roynichols5212
That transmission is in my 2021 Transit T350. It's currently at the Ford dealer for this very problem. The service tech told me this problem caused my torque converter to fail. The torque converter is known to have a weak stator from the factory anyway. The repair will cost me $8,843.00. I have talked to Ford corporate about financial help. I'm waiting to hear back.
Mine is at Ford right now getting transmission rebuilt. I’m still under warranty, but from what guy told me Ford is just taken care of the issue even outside of warranty. I hope this fixes the problem in the long run.
Thanks for all the great content. Could I ask you to consider making a video where you detail the symptoms of the various issues with the 10R80? The different issues it seems to have may present differently. I have a 2020 F-150 and every once in a while, if I put it in drive from a cold start, it will act like it's in neutral. I'll give it a little gas and nothing...but if I let up on the gas and then hit the gas again, it works fine. Probably has done that about 6 times in the four years I've had it. The other issue is becoming more frequent (like several times a day). When I accelerate under moderate throttle, if I let up on the gas at the same time it upshifts, I get a muted clunk sound. Took it to my dealership and they said if I have them look at it, it's currently a 6-week wait just until a "transmission tech" can even troubleshoot it. Additionally, they can't schedule that tech to look at it and have me just come in when they're ready...I have to drop it off now and then wait 6 weeks to get it looked at...ridiculous!
My 2020 ranger has had this issue since day 1. I took it to Ford over the last few years about it. They always told me "it's normal". I even showed them the research I did saying it's a bushing but of course that wasn't it. What happens with mine is 3rd and 4th gear. It loses line pressure (I'm assuming the hole that's blocked is it losing line pressure). And it feels like the whole truck loses power for almost a second, then comes back like it's normal. I had to take matters into my own hands after the dealer kept telling me they can't do anything about it. I changed the fluid to amsoil and pan to a better one and it shifts like butter. The line pressure issue remains, I hope they fix it for me this time ... After dealing with them about this I told myself I would never buy a ford again. Its been ridiculous
So, are you saying I can bring it in and they perform this TSB, or, take it in, say I want the new CDF drum, spend $6k and drive out with new drum? Already had my entire trams replaced at 59k and new one still shifts like an idiot sometimes so wondering if new reman is FUBAR too
I have a 2014 and I noticed if the temp outside gets in the high 90s, my fan stays on the entire time the engine is on. We had a 2013 f-150 work truck that did the same thing. 160k miles and no issues tho.
If you've had your air-conditioning serviced, that's a symptom of the system being overcharged. Some vehicles leave the factory overcharged and some people use the DIY trigger cans that easily put you in overcharged territory.
What are the symptoms? I took mine in because it sometimes slams into third, and fourth to fifth feels like it just drops off for a second before it shifts. G If it down shifts into ninth and eighth, it slams into those gears too. 2021 F-150. Ford said it's normal.
The 10R80s are clunky by nature. They really only like to shift smoothly when harder on the throttle. But if you got a 3-5 skip shift slamming that's due to the CDF drum. Also going into 10th gear and if i remember right if you get stuck in those higher gears 8-10 then CDF drum is probably causing clutches to stay engaged
Just had a new 10r80trans put in my 2018 f150 5.0 at 110k miles May 2023, did they put this new drum in the new ones or do they need to be built? Is their a part number or model number for the new ones to see if I have this drum? The new trans has 100k or 3 year warranty
My 2017 Explorer Limited w/ Ecoboost had transmission failure at 55k. It was slipping after cold starts for probably 20k. I hear you implying but can you confirm the 2024’s are fixed? 2021 F150 with 31,000 miles and I had to have my transmission rebuilt because of slipping. I asked if there were new and improved parts put in it and they didn't have an answer, called ford but couldn't get an answer. Is there a way to determine if my rebuild included new re-engineered parts in it? Thanks for the video.
So my 2020 f150 with only 29k miles is getting a new transmission right now in the shop. I asked the service rep 3 times so this is not a rebuild and he said no, it’s new , this new transmission is different then the original from 2020. He said the body is the same but the internals are different, the valve body is different , solenoids is different. So hopefully mine is the updated version otherwise I’ve been thinking of switching to gm but I think they are having the same issues. Mine started with coming to a stop and feeling like someone rear ended you, so I greased the driveshaft and fixed that issue. Then it started with a whine noise whenever running. First replace the valve body, well that didn’t fix my issue , second was new drum and clutch , but they skipped to step 3 just in case other internals got damaged. Step 3 , new transmission, so time will tell. It’s paid off is the bummer part , maybe I just ride it out or do I trade it in while it has Low mileage and running good ??? First world problems lol
@gregsmith983 I had it fixed under factory warranty, probably 2 years ago. It would shift very hard into 2nd or 3rd gear and had many other weird shifting symptoms. It didn't do it all the time but when it did it was very noticeable.
2020 Ford F-150 XL owner here. I like Ford vehicles for a number of reasons but I do not like everyone at ford. Just like how I also dont like everyone at ASUS even though I like their motherboards. I had some weird jerking around the 7-8th gear on the high way and I think I felt very little when I was driving in residential areas around gears 3, 4, and 5. I did call my local dealership and explained to them whats going on. Seeing this video makes me feel sick and anxious. my warranty I know is likely no longer around and I see myself paying an arm and a leg for this kind of repair.
I just was told this was "likely" my problem too. My symptoms are exactly yours...7-9th gear when accelerating on highway but no issues in the lower gears. Of course I'm out of warranty too.
@@davidfelton3084 UPDATE it appears it may most likely be a programming issue. So they went ahead and cleared this "TCM" thing which clears the learning and now the truck seems to be driving normally now. probably safe to say that if it happens again after a transmission fluid change, its likely the TCM also has to be cleared at the time of fluid change.
@@GAKtion64 That's very interesting because before I decided to take my truck to the dealer, I found another UA-cam video that talked about clearing the Adaptive Learning Tables for the transmission. I think this is what you're referring to. I was able to do this myself with the FORScan free software (and a free extended license trial) and an ODB cable from Amazon. (video showing how to do this yourself ua-cam.com/video/sHbsIboCfbc/v-deo.html) I reset the tables yesterday, and have driven probably close to 75-100 miles since then, and I already notice better shifting and I really haven't been able to easily replicate the stuttering in the higher gears like I was able to for the past many months. I'm optimistic that I may have avoided any "real" transmission work for now.
can you help with my 2020 expedition max 3.5l EcoBoost with 10r80. After drove for 20 mins when trans at 5th gear and I hit the gas pedal hard to accelerate, the car feel like something hit it ( vibrate hard) and no gear show in the dash, after 1-2 second its show 4th gear or 5th gear and keep driving fine. does not happened when cold start. I checked fluid at 206 deg and it is between 5 and 6 on the dip. only happened at 5th gear with accelerate hard. soft acceleration did not happen.
Is there a thermostat in the automatic transmission or the cooler 2019 f150 2.7 4x4 Alot ppl seem to think so Having weird temperatures New 170 thermostat Engine stays 180F Transmission is all over the place
So my 2020 ford expedition needs trans work. Advisor said it was the a clutch that failed. Any idea what the cause would of been or is this a common issue? 40k miles on it
So I have a 2021 f150 that slams into gear. I had the valve body rebuilt through this tsb, it had lessened the amount of times it occurs. But now all the sudden the have a new tsb that supersedes the previous tsb and doesn’t include 2021-2023 F150s. So the dealer won’t replace the cdf drum. Eventually they’ll have a tsb that includes 2021-2023, but it will come out once most of us are out of warranty. They acknowledged it in the previous tsb but now it magically vanished. Very very dirty Ford
Went to local Ford yesterday for this and they said there are over 30 trucks in front of me. They said I could leave my truck and they would get to it in two months. I guess I will drive it till it won't move anymore. I'm under warranty for 40,000 more miles
Actually a company commented on a 10r80 video saying they're working on an affordable fix for it, a snap ring to keep the bushing into place.. but that was 1 year ago they commented and still nothing from them
What are the symptoms of this failure. My 19 has always seemed off from typical trans shift characteristics. Have had it reprogrammed and it helped but still shifts different. My truck is still under warranty so what would I say to the dealer to get this fixed instead of the typical can't recreate issue while waiting for warranty to run out.
What about mustangs w the 10 speed? I didn’t hear u say that… but I’m assuming a lot of em still got it… im wondering too man cuz I wanna swap a 10 speed auto into a old school someday… soon
Hi I have a delayed shift from 5-6 also when I put into reverse the truck jerks, i took it to the dealer and was told if it just needs an update it would be $300 and warranty would not cover updates And if the update doesn’t fix it then they would see if my extended warranty would cover it Do you know of an update fix shift issues? And if I can get it done cheaper else where
An update COULD fix it but it's rare. All the update is gonna do is clear the valve body memory and try to relearn how to shift. If it doesn't fix it then at best a new valve body is needed. Otherwise it would need a tear down to see if, i think it's A clutch that's messing with 5-6
If you're still in the warranty period (milage/years), yes. But, it'll have to have symptoms of the TSB and they can replicate them. If they can't, you're not getting anything new without paying for it. Unless they turn it into an recall after enough failures.
Does anyone know what company makes this upgraded drum or have the part # ? I'd like to make sure this fix is done correctly the first time. I hear so many stories of people having their transmission fixed or replaced and then it goes back in.
I'm truck shopping right now and thought that I wanted a 17 and up F-150's with a 10 speed. Until I drove 2 2019's back to back and they both had jerky shifting when under no load at lower speeds. When starting to accelerate it would jerk into gear on both trucks so now I'm shopping for a 2015-2017 that have the 6 speed transmission and have the 5.0. Any problem with the 5.0 for those years?
I have a 2020 Ford Transit 3.5 Ecoboost van. Will I have the same trans issue and does this TSB mean to bring it in even if I don't have a complaint or WHEN I notice an issue. My van is still under warranty...
TSB means if you take it in for a shifting concern this is something a tech has to do in order for warranty to cover it. Like a troubleshoot step per say. I would take it while it's still under warranty and complain about the shifting so that it gets taken care of
Anyone know how much this costs with a TSB? I’ve got a 2019 ranger that shifts rough even went with a tune to fix the shifts but I still notice harsh shifting. Thanks in advance
I've been quoted from 6300 to 7800 between 3 dealerships. I'd look into indie Ford shops, one near me guy is a ford tech and was doing these for $3600.
Same truck. 88K miles. Hard shifts 3-4th and yesterday Got stuck in 2nd gear with a boat behind me and this morning got stuck in 7th at 10mph. How much longer do I have before failure?
Could the jerking and harsh shifting caused by the adaptive learning cause the failue in the CDF drum? Would driving in Tow Haul mode keep it out of adaptive learning mode?
So will this stop the hard shifts on the 2019 5.0 when you are around 30 MPH and the Powerboost shifts extremely hard through every gear? Just figured it does that cause it’s new and learning. Idk it’s just weird to me
Had a 2018 expedition max with less than 70k and the transmission totally failed. Ford refused to do shit about it. That’s why I’ll never buy another new ford.
Back in 2017 I special ordered a F150 that cane with this crap. Took it to the dealer several times until the dealer admitted that there was a problem and Ford was working on it but would not admit it has a problem. It was the only vehicle I ever returned after the lease was over. Total POS....
Bro I got a 2014 mustang gt with the 6R80, tranny flares up on the 5th-6th gear shift. The only time it won’t flare is when I equalize the throttle before the shift. Help!
Stay away from the Ford & the Chevy with the 10 spd trans. They are nothing but trouble & why do you need so many gears in a pickup truck or a passenger car? You don't.

@gregsmith983 I had it fixed under factory warranty, probably 2 years ago. It would shift very hard into 2nd or 3rd gear and had many other weird shifting symptoms. It didn't do it all the time but when it did it was very noticeable.
So they did the CDF Clutch update?
Mine shifts hard when going to 3rd it will skip 4th and jerk into 5th just pisses me off.
@@gregsmith983 yup mine did the same
It’s showing on TSB this CDF was changed in August of 22. Is that wrong? My 150 built in July of 23 should have the updated CDF
Would this cause a slow shift from 3-4, 5-6 only in sport mode? Transmission shifts fine otherwise.
I have a question about the adaptive tables for transmissions!! How do I contact you?
is 2024 models fixed from factory?
Is there a thermostat in the automatic transmission or the cooler
2019 f150 2.7 4x4
Alot ppl seem to think so
Having weird temperatures
New 170 thermostat
Engine stays 180F
Transmission is all over the place
Would transmission JL3Z7000F have the updated drum? That is the trans Ford put in my truck about 1 year ago.
What about the 6R80?
My question is how long do I have before it just gives up? My 2019 has 64K on it and it started about 6K ago.
Went to local Ford yesterday for this and they said there are over 30 trucks in front of me. They said I could leave my truck and they would get to it in two months. I guess I will drive it till it won't move anymore. I'm under warranty for 40,000 more miles
Does it affect 2021 ford Bronco?
Bronco is 10r60 so yes
getting a p061a code on my supercharged mustang, any idea what it might be?
This drum is just DIY drop in replacement, right? 😂
Actually a company commented on a 10r80 video saying they're working on an affordable fix for it, a snap ring to keep the bushing into place.. but that was 1 year ago they commented and still nothing from them
Are all parts and labor covered by Ford?
What are the symptoms of this failure. My 19 has always seemed off from typical trans shift characteristics. Have had it reprogrammed and it helped but still shifts different. My truck is still under warranty so what would I say to the dealer to get this fixed instead of the typical can't recreate issue while waiting for warranty to run out.
You'll have a harsh 3-5 skip shift. That's the easiest symptom to pick up
What about mustangs w the 10 speed? I didn’t hear u say that… but I’m assuming a lot of em still got it… im wondering too man cuz I wanna swap a 10 speed auto into a old school someday… soon
Hi I have a delayed shift from 5-6 also when I put into reverse the truck jerks, i took it to the dealer and was told if it just needs an update it would be $300 and warranty would not cover updates
And if the update doesn’t fix it then they would see if my extended warranty would cover it
Do you know of an update fix shift issues? And if I can get it done cheaper else where
An update COULD fix it but it's rare. All the update is gonna do is clear the valve body memory and try to relearn how to shift. If it doesn't fix it then at best a new valve body is needed. Otherwise it would need a tear down to see if, i think it's A clutch that's messing with 5-6
What would my symptoms be?
Thank you for this!
Would this be covered under the 5 year 60,000 mile powertrain warranty?
If you're still in the warranty period (milage/years), yes. But, it'll have to have symptoms of the TSB and they can replicate them. If they can't, you're not getting anything new without paying for it.
Unless they turn it into an recall after enough failures.
Is it a recal
Does anyone know what company makes this upgraded drum or have the part # ? I'd like to make sure this fix is done correctly the first time. I hear so many stories of people having their transmission fixed or replaced and then it goes back in.
JL3Z-7H351-B. that is the f150, expedition, navigator and 5.0 mustang cdf cylider. JR3Z-7H351-B this is the ranger and 2.3l mustang cylinder number.
What's the probability of having this problem ? 1/100 or 1/1000?
I'm truck shopping right now and thought that I wanted a 17 and up F-150's with a 10 speed. Until I drove 2 2019's back to back and they both had jerky shifting when under no load at lower speeds. When starting to accelerate it would jerk into gear on both trucks so now I'm shopping for a 2015-2017 that have the 6 speed transmission and have the 5.0. Any problem with the 5.0 for those years?
Nah 6R80s are less problematic. They're built with stronger internals that won't wear as easily
@@adrianarreola7467 well, this issue kind of drove me towards buying a Tundra.
I would take it while it's still under warranty and complain about the shifting so that it gets taken care of
@FlyingWrenches13 what are your thoughts on transmission flush vs. drain & fill and how often?
Didn't he mention in the best 150 video about how great the 10 speeds are over the 6 speeds ?
I have an 06 f150 with 6 speed still smooth as day on drive it off the lot. The 10 speed is pitiful and I was told at dealer this is the way it is.
10r80 shifts faster
The 6r80 holds power reliably
My 2011
With this being a $200 part, what is the repair cost?
$8,000. I heard that It’s about a 12 hour job 3/5 days to drop rebuild and replace the transmission .
Who pays for that? I have 2020 with 85000 miles on my truck. Is it a recall?
Same truck. 88K miles. Hard shifts 3-4th and yesterday Got stuck in 2nd gear with a boat behind me and this morning got stuck in 7th at 10mph. How much longer do I have before failure?
Mustangs excluded?
I’m dumping my 2019 3.5 when the warranty is expired. Oh the cam phaser shoe hasn’t drop yet
Could the jerking and harsh shifting caused by the adaptive learning cause the failue in the CDF drum?
Would driving in Tow Haul mode keep it out of adaptive learning mode?
Hey bud how common is this? Are u seeing it alot? I got a 150.. And bought the 5.0 because of ur videos.. Now I'm stressed about the trans.. Lol
The latest campaign. Bulletin.
Ford should have eaten every one of these. Poor quality. I still don't understand why the 10L80 doesn't have this issue?
Yes they should.
Why hasn’t it been recalled? 😮😮😮
You don't.
Great video 👍
If I get any brain damage in the future and I'm dumb enough to every buy a ford, I will definitely subscribe to your channel 😉
this is a sympton only of a larger problem
That’s a lot of words. Now how much is this gonna cost me?
they should've sticked to 6 speed
@fordbossme You see this? 🤦🏻♂️
He is too busy making immigration videos.lol
ImmigrationBossMe
I hate how this transmission acts.
Awful. All trucks are now a joke.
Real Trucks use Standard Shift Transmissions.. .
