They skipped years because they're not needed for accelerating. They're only needed for maintaining speed to put the RPMs at the appropriate speed for best fuel economy balance with power requirements.
i have a 2018 f-150 2.7l ecoboost it’s always good upshifting except sometimes from 2-3 or 3-4 cent remember it’s alittle more noticeable then the rest i think usually when cold but downshifting is sometimes i get random clunking noises i believe to be the solenoids hanging up and when slowing down to a stop when it goes from 3rd to second to first or from 3rd to first when just about stopped it makes a clunking sound everytime maybe you can verify if there’s a later software update or something i have had it updated once and it solved the issue for about a year if i drive it in sport mode it never does it it’s perfect in sport mode any recommendations would be great as my warranty is up in june thanks Craig

Yessir. The shift schedule will change based on current gear and throttle position. There are 14 different shift schedules based on mode, temp, etc. In Normal mode upon normal acceleration to 45 to 55mph, it will go 1,3,5,6,7,8,9,10. Very light throttle will cause 1,3,4,6,7,8,9,10. Extremely light throttle will make it shift 1-2, but eventually will skip to 4th and so forth.
Manual transmission drivers did that for years, nice to see Ford has a 10 speed auto that skips gears under the right conditions. Thank you for this video.
I drive a manual transmission car, and I also skip gears often depending on traffic conditions. I'll go to about 4K rpm in fourth and shift to 6th for cruising.
Yep, when I'm going slow I will go 1st to 4th in my 6 speed some time, if I rev 1st up to 4k (8k redline) I can casually shift to 4th and lightly accelerate. Less clutch use, and it's fine when not in a rush. Some vehicles with manuals even have this behavior added from the factory (usually v8).
@volvo09 I had a 2011 mustang gt that had 1-4 skip shift. It would physically divert the shifter from the 2nd gear gate to 4th gear. It was very annoying and I got around it by short-shifting into 2nd. I'd usually rev 2nd out to 35-40mph and go straight to 5th when driving in town. Getting onto the highway with an open runway, I'd let it rev on 2nd and 3rd before going straight to 6th. Owning a 6-speed 5.9 cummins was a whole different story. It didn't have the rev range to skip gears. Shifting through every gear every time I got up to speed got old after a while, especially in heavy traffic.
I picked up a 2020 F-150 4x4 with the 3.5L ecoboost las week. This is good information to know. I have not had any engine or transmission issues with it. It likes to get out and run on the freeway. The best thing I like about this transmission is that it is not a Nissan CVT....been there, done that. Problem solved.
Like truckers used to do Skip gears. But most would have never noticed had not been for the indicator on the dash showing what gear it was in currently
My 2019 skips some lower gears on level grade. I climb a pretty steep hill coming up to my home, and there it goes through every gear. Some of the gears you can feel and others are smooth as silk depending on the acceleration. I have been very pleased with my F150.
Is yours a ecoboost or 5.0? I’m seriously considering a ford F150 either XLT or higher trim with 4x4. I’d like the 5.0 as my boss didn’t have good luck with his ecoboost.

Hello Brian, I understand what your saying perfectly, ten speeds are rarely needed. My main driver is a 2018 Focus ST or occasionally my 2015 Mustang GT. In both of them if I do an aggressive take off I might only use 1st and 2nd and be up to the speed I want and jump right into 6th. I can' hardly believe at the age of almost 74 I'm still driving two cars with manual transmissions but that's what I like in many ways. I'd love to drive one of the newer Mustangs with the 10 spd auto but my 2015 only has about 8500 miles on it so there is no way I'm going to pay 1000's of $s just to get a 10 spd auto. George
30,000 mile fluid change and filter is a must for these trans. Not a flush, just pull the pan and it’s ends up being about a 8qt change which is half the fluid. Use only motorcraft ULV on the 10R80.
Thanks for the great video Brian. The 10R80 (mine included) seems rough around the edges. Of course, it delivers phenomenal gas mileage that a 4R70W or C6 could only dream about.
My 2020 ranger did the same thing. Think of it like having 2 transmissions. A 5 speed for normal, efficient, highway driving then a tight ratio 10 speed for when you put your foot to the floor.
I have a 2020 2.7 ecoboost w 10r80. Mine will stop shifting once it gets to 5th or 6th gear under moderate to heavy acceleration. Rpm’s will redline until I completely let off the gas. I even lose throttle response completely on rare occasion when trying to pass. This happens in every drive mode but mainly in sport mode. Only seems to happen after trans adaptive learning takes over. It drives great if I clear the adaptive learning tables or disconnect battery for a while.
10 speed is actually a perfect transmission if you're towing the transmission will use all the gears if you're driving lately with no load it will skip gears sounds good to me
I think it also could have something to do with the drivers habits, because the computers recognize driving patterns. When I got my 2019 it would almost always skip 2nd and 5th, but since I've been driving it for a month or so and I have a lighter foot, it's started hitting 5th almost every time now and will sometimes skip 4th
This doesn’t bother me because it’s shifting smoothly when it shifts. I have a 19 jeep 9 speed that I’ve been told is normal, it slips gears, hangs up in, high rpm revs before shifts etc, clearly has something wrong they refuse to fix. I knew better that to get away from Ford. Awesome informative video 😊
If you have an older say 17-19 with the 10 sp, check with Ford for software updates. My friend bought a used 17 F150 2.7 4x4 and all it did was constantly up and down shift, lock and unlock the converter, even at light throttle. It never skipped gears! Highly annoying! They did a reflash and now it shifts like in this vid, and much less busy, more smoothly. It currently has 54k on it. He bought it with 37k on it.
Exactly Jaspaul. I get a very heavy noticeable and loud clunk on downshifting around 7-5 it seems, it so bad you feel it and sounds like the transmission loses pressure and clunk in the rear end. Also, I have a issue at times shifting into 4th at times on the first initial 3rd to 4th after the truck has sat for a few hours and it feels like it slips or something. It goes to shift from 3rd to 4th and it jerks you forward and the RPMs go up and you have to let off the gas and then get back on it
The best thing for people to do is turn the gear indicator off as well as other gauge displays they know nothing about. Watch the temp and oil pressure and keep up the maintenance, it'll tell you when something is wrong. Or you'll feel something wrong/ abnormal.
What a weird situation - an owner has the wherewithal to realize that the trans is skipping gears and, at the same time, not understand that skipping gears on a 10 speed trans would not only be normal, but expected
Sooooooooooo. I recently had my Gen 3 5.0L go in for a big repair. VVT Exhaust Solenoids on both banks needed to be replaced. Once I had this done. My A10 was like another beast. It became a new car. The transmission now shifts on a such a smoother level. Where I used to get pulled through a stop with my old issues with the solenoid. Once that was replaced. The mustang drives like a different beast.
Not so much for emissions with skip-shifting, but improved fuel mileage and better acceleration than would be achieved by going through all of the gears. With manual transmissions (5-speed), I do 1-3 and 2-4 shifts quite frequently and, occasionally, the 1-3-5 shifts (If I'm in a Hurry). It really depends on road conditions, incline, and the type of driving I'm doing. Experimenting using a ScanGauge and Dash Command, I gotten anywhere from 2 to 5 mpg improvement over using all of the gears, while driving for fuel economy. Conversely, for acceleration, I generally use a 1-3-5 for top-end speed or 1-3-4-5 for shorter range or if I'm in the 4-banger. A lot of times, with a slight downhill grade at a stop sign or light, I start in 2nd gear and have used 3rd when the grade is a little steeper and letting off the brakes give me a good enough roll. On an up-hill grade, all 5 speeds may be required. With the 10-Speed automatic, it would make perfectly good sense to use skip shifting strategies. Now-a-days, with the brain boxes and modules to think about all of the input variables, the transmission control module can use only the gears that are needed for the circumstances, in theory. As you Stated, the calibration is " Muey Impotante". My Dad had one of the early 10-speed automatics in his F-150 that would lock up occasionally. Once the Dealer did the fix and recalibrated the trans, that was a great driving truck. (Except for the "Electric Steering" that went out on him. It never works correctly for small R/C cars. I don't understand why Ford thinks it would work for long or any better in a full-sized vehicle. Not one of their "Better Ideas". (Picture a skinny 83-year-old dude having the steering go out on him while trying to get 6,000-pounds of truck in the driveway. After 68 years of driving Fords, he swore off of ever buying another.)) Thanks for the video!
@@Demoralized88 Dude, I don't care how long electric power steering has been out. Not all vehicles have it He didn't like it and got rid of the truck. I had diagnosed the truck with my scanner, and it did have codes. I don't remember what they were, but I do know that it entailed replacing the entire steering rack. The part was $1700 plus installation. I could have done the work but he wanted no more of it. He thought it was nice when it worked but it didn't work at all when it went out on him. He passed away the following year at 84 and was looking to buy something else for my Mom to drive. That was the first time in my entire life that he ever looked anywhere besides a Ford dealership.
I’d like to know if you have a video on the oil consumption problem on the 2018 F150 5.0? I found your channel from a guy I was speaking to about my truck I’m going on engine number 4 due to oil consumption. The Transmission has also been very clunky and would feel like someone rear ended me they since reprogrammed it and it fixed the problem. My biggest thing is I never have my truck as it’s always in the dealership it’s currently been there for 3 months.
I always thought the reason for so many gears was to keep RPMs in the best range for MPG. If its skipping gears on light acceleration i guess thats not the case? I think im missing the point.
It's a truck, the added gears help when under load (towing, going up hills) since the engine can be kept in it's power or efficiency range. If it was a car it would probably be programmed to use them all.
It's not so much on light acceleration but when accelerating faster. There's no need to shift through every gear if it needs to shift again in half a second anyway.
My 2021 F-150 2.7 eco can’t decide what gear to be in. In gatlinburgh it really was a mess in the mountains. I just got a recall. Hopefully for this problem. Thanks again!
I've always felt like it was just a 5 spd with half gears. The only time it goes through every single gear is in sport ot tow/haul mode. I bought my '18 5.0 f150 new, and just recently hit 100k miles with 0 issues. Skipping gears is completely normal for the 10spd.
I just had this conversation with Ford F150 owner about 10R80 gear skips. These transmissions are going to be gold mine for Ford service and parts departments along with the aftermarket shops. Our shop is seeing a lot of units failing at around 70k miles 18-19-20s already. Bless you Ford for this bounty. 🎉
@@JosephLane-j4z I took mine into the dealer and there was a broken pin within the transmission. Thirty-cent part, but they replaced the entire control valve under warranty. Then they flashed the transmission to it relearns my driving. Either way - next truck will be Toyota.
@@scolson18 my truck doesn’t bang gears hard but it’s just seems weird that it does it on a new truck. Otherwise it runs great it’s just when it downshifts from 3 to 5 or one is when it does it. I flash mine about six months ago, just to relearn the transmission adapted transmission.
We have a 2018 Ford F-150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost v-6 with that 10r80 transmission and it does skip shifts in Normal drive mode. In Sport mode it doesn’t and on hills it stays in 10th gear if you are using cruise control. General Motors uses the same transmission in their full size trucks and SUVs with the 6.2 v8 and the Duramax 3.0 diesel.
@@79random I can see that, ten gears keeps the engine in its power band better. You did confirm what I said with the 6r80 being great for everyday type driving.
Thanks for the info. My 10R80 died at 84,000mi. It would come out of gear shift hard even chirp the tires under light acceleration. The dealer wanted 10k to fix it so I had a local trans shop re-build it. Now it still shifts hard, slips and slams out of gear.
Cheap and easy thing to try first is clear the adaptive learning table for the tranny using Forscan. I was getting really hard shifts all around and thought the tranny had a bad drum but simply resetting it smoothened everything out. Drive it lightly for the first day then drive normal and let it re-learn your habits.
2021 and newer f150 10r80 I see quite a few people are experiencing a shudder in 8th 9th and 10th gear under light throttle, have you heard anything complaints about this issue? Ford says it's normal operation.
This very normal! The ecu of transmition see the condition of the road and the driver and pass the gears like the motor need. In Portugal we don't have this...2.7 ecoboost... Good video!
Talk to us more on the 10spd transmission. I recently purchased a low mileage 21' XLT Coyote. I come from Powerstrokes since 00'. I've turned wrenches since I was 17 and I'm now 60. I can't hustle like I used to and now punch a clock and maintain a fleet for the local Sheriff's Department. This what appears to be a converter or front pump whine is alarming. Also, with the skip shifts - my truck does not flare shift, however it is a very lazy and feels like a hunt shift when skipping 2nd. If I'm crowding the throttle it appears to shift fine and at WOT it's shifting like it should. It just seems over the long haul, that lazy shift is going to burn clutch material. I'm nearing the 60k mile powertrain warranty, should I let the dealer take a look or is there already TSB's out and I'm going to get "that's normal" as a diag. Appreciate any info!
That's helpful info, would love to hear your take on the adaptive learning on these things, which to me is way more annoying. It's basically not the truck you tested, bought, and drove off the lot afer 200 miles, it's something you want to run into a phone pole and set on fire.
I've got 2018 5.0 f150 10 speed that up shifts like this video.. BUT, mine started hard down shift in lower gears (2 thru5) at 35,298 miles. Took to dealer, diagnosed clutch drum needs replacing. I'm at 35,060 miles awaiting parts. Thank goodness I have extended warranty with $100 deductible Service advisor says they (dealer) gets about one of these a month, any year with 10 speed transmission not included 2021 and newer.
Yep, perfectly normal, my '19 regularly skips 2 & 4. Back when i drove semi trucks with 18 spd manual, i would use as few as 8 gears when empty, but all 18 when fully loaded.
Great video. Sometime could you address the occasional harsh shifting on the 2021 Ford Ranger? Doesn’t happen all the time, seems when its a light load or coasting to a stop. Programming issue or normal?
Love your channel. Seems like the customer is complaining about hard shifts. Isn’t this what your test driving for? Hard shift, delayed shift for me 3 to 4 or 3 to 5. What’s the deal? Ford has been paying customers who have lawyers involved. Is this a characteristic or is it something bad. I am 43k and this has been happening since 20k. Getting worse. If it’s below zero outside I have had hard shifts through every gear until warmed up.
As a class 1 driver, since 1998, 3 million + kms(Canada), I have never used "all" gears! I have started from 2nd, or 1st, pending weighted load(superB), and skipped every other hear from 1st and 3rd! Pending weight of course, keeping in mind, my load is 127000lbs, 49000kg, and wheels count as well. But after 5th...or glorified 16speed(8th gear), I'm using every gear after!! Why use every gear...in Pete's it's 1900 rpm, in kenworth, it's 2200rpm. I would bring up rpms, the hills rock at high rpm, you drop a gear at 1700 to 1550(no lower!!!!!), and you maintained a great performance power climb! Once you drop to about 1400, you may as well skip to the 3rd gear below, under weight right?...so...fully chained, all the jewelry, we used 2300 as top end, and 1900 as shift gear location, as we're climbing about a 13° grade...all I have to say is "Northwest Territories" and those with experience, will exactly know what I'm talking about! You have flat land...and then a steep ravine...you're doing 95km to 110km across the bridge, and then it's damn near straight up!!! You stop? You hold still...bed trucks(3) come anchor to you, then you get pulled up...remember everyone is wearing jewelry!!! It's a freaking blasted white knuckle time, but at 50.....I've had enough since age 23... You cannot use every gear!
Also, many trucks are low on fluid from the factory. Check them at temperature or at least do the proper cold check like this guy shows in another vehicle. I consider cold to be room temperature or slightly above as no one has actually said what it should be.
Hi this is Milton, thanks a lot for all of your videos that really help us . I just have a question: I have a 2005 Ford f150 and have some kind of problem with the reverse that doesn’t work . My question is: this kind of problem is from the transmission? Hope you read and answer my question , thanks !
You have an issue with either the low/reverse brake band or the reverse clutch, if you have a 4-speed Auto (4R70W). The best way to eliminate the reverse clutch being the culprit would be to put the transmission in the lowest position (1 or Manual 1), get up to 25-30 mph and let off to see if there’s ‘engine braking’ in Manual 1. If the engine rpm (tachometer) drops down to normal idle speed and the engine doesn’t slow down the truck, the reverse band inside the transmission is busted.
Would love to see an update regarding all the 10R80 CDF drum bushings. Ford keeps telling me it's normal... when we all know the truth. Just waiting for it to completely fail and my wife and kids stranded...
My 18 F150 (2.7) has skipped from day one. Seems to do it after I start it up on cold days. As soon as it starts to roll it acts like it won't go I get a gentle clunk then it goes. If I let it warm up good it doesn't do it.
I recently found your videos. You share some of the most concise information and service info of anyone on UA-cam of any make, model or flavor of vehicles out there today. Do you consult on a private level?
Why would mine jerk hard from 1st to 3rd? It only seems to happen when I first get behind the wheel. but after driving for a while it shifts just fine. I have a 2018 with the 5.0
I’ve read rumors of a class action lawsuit against this 10R80 because of dangerous disengagement from rear wheels, engine racing and issues of poor performance. Is this true?
I wish you would have put in tow haul mode. my 2020 XLT goes nut on a small incline when in tow move, it will down shift from 5 to 2 and it feels like it simulating a low jack in a semi.. it jerks pretty hard pulling a small 20FT boat on inclines, when I take my foot off the gas pedal.
I understand the gearshifting part. But how about when it bangs into gear from 3rd to 5 to 5to 3rd? It’s kind of annoying with the new truck I have a 2017 3.5. And it bangs quite often should I have it looked at I guess is my question? Appreciate your time Bryan as always.30.000 mile!
cdf bushing. theres quite a few vids on youtube about it. plus a couple that takes the cdf drum out to show what bushing shifts to cause a harsh 3rd to 4th
I am renting a 2023 Malibu right now. It sure feels like a CVT. But when you give it beans, it mimicks the shifting of a traditional hydraulic automatic transmission.
How about in sport mode off the line (red light) the transmission stays in 2nd gear yet raps the rpms to 4000+. I understand the gears to lower the rpms in normal mode, but in Sport Mode it doesn't seem to know when to shift.
My 2022 F250 7.3L I swear moves forward and clunks sometimes on start up. It’s almost like the transmission shifts into gear at startup without me doing it. Only every so often. Any thoughts?
not sure about the 2022s.. thought they had that taken care of but i remember coming across a video where the driveshaft with turn a little on start up. had something to do with the driveshaft and a bushing or something
@@FordTechMakuloco Has ford fixed excessive v8 oil consumption for 2021 year? Would it be possible to swap 10 speed transmission to 6 speed transmision?
Rumor has it that those ATs are a ZF design but made by Linamar in CDA. So Ford buys them and hopes for the best. But trying to keep track of shifting with 10 speeds can make you loco.
My 24 ranger raptor skips gears sometimes when doing soft accel, or when its cold. I cant see why it would NEED to use every gear every time so long as its not under load or heavy tq.
@FordTechMakuloco cleared trans adaptive table, halted, resumed on forscan. About 200km after resume, ford attempted tsb pcm update. It threw a CEL do not diagnose. Ideas?
Bought a used f150 with no warranty and had to replace the 10 speed 2 weeks in. It’s running 230 F by the dash and the ford dealer mechanic is saying that’s normal. Mind you this is unloaded, not towing, running 80mph on interstate at 5am with ambient temp about 75F. Thoughts please because I’m paranoid as hell now.
When the ZF transmission engineers were asked if they would be designing a 10 spd transmission they said no. They determined that thier 8spd in its current generation was nearly as efficient as current a 10 spd. They don’t feel the cost of developing a 10 spd was worth the investment.
@@FordTechMakuloco they are a good unit but hard part's ability is lacking. Had a 21 Chevy with the 10 SPD wining like an alternator here the gear that drives the pump that's pressed onto the front cover spins on it's bearing and makes noise. Our local dealer denied any coverage 80k but has plenty of those covers in stock. IMHO this is a common failure ang GM should of stepped up.
Had the 2017 ecoboost and the 2020 5.0, i couldn't stand the transmissions in either one. I don't drive the same everyday. With it trying to learn my pattern was so annoying. Went back to my ol 95 with 4 gear's I control.
What is the trick to getting a power steering pump disconnected from the high pressure line? Having trouble getting it loosened, I have an 01 Taurus 3.0 DOHC.
I noticed today that my truck (2020 5.0) in sport mode is less likely to skip gears, even leaving from an intersection at part throttle. It'll do 1->2->-3->4->5... The normal skip-gear strategy is pretty decent otherwise.
Hello I have Ford Explorer 2017 has a malfunction, there is no spark in the clutch, and the car does not work, we replaced the crank sensor, the same thing, there is no spark, and when examining these malfunctions, PCM DTC P033900/P06B800/p06E900 appeared, where are the malfunctions
Hey, What about the 2022 Explorer ST, If you get down on it hard and it sounds/feels like it Slipped into the next gear because of the hesitation, then it catches. And every once in a while, it seems like it couldn't make up its mind and it feels and sounds like it dropped the transmission, but nothing shows up on the dashboard.
I just bought a '18 F150 3.5 ecoboost 2 weeks ago. When I test drove it, it shifted into every gear. Last week, it started shifting 1, 3, 5, 6. I thought something was wrong. I towed a heavy load on Thurs, and it went back to all gear shifting. While towing, the temp gauge suddenly showed 235 on top of the gauge. I thought it was running hot, but it never went above the 235. This week, it still hasn't went back to 1, 3, 5 shifting. Sport mode makes the engine intake sound like it's having a hard time breathing. And it seems to hang in ea gear way too long. Not really any issues other than trying to get use to how it operates. I called my salesman, and he said 235 sounded normal from what he sees. I asked him why they have it show the temp above the gauge when it reaches 130 or so and he said he didn't know. But so far, I love the truck, and it's pretty quick.
I have a 2018 with the 3.5EB with 90,000 miles. I also noticed it seemed to run hot A LOT! My cooling fans were on just about all the time. I put in a new Motorcraft thermostat and vacuum filled new coolant and it is staying cool now. I think the older thermostat had an issue. It is a pretty easy job, but be sure you vacuum fill the coolant...
Hey Why does anyone need a 10 speed transmission? I can understand it in a semi truck trailer but pickup. Maybe attach a gear reduction box for long highway trips.
Official Statement from Ford:
Upshift Gear Sequence
At times the 10-speed transmission may skip gears when the vehicle starts from a complete stop. This is normal and desired behavior.
At part pedal when acceleration is brisk, single step upshifts would result in very frequent shift events (very short time in gear). Double step upshifts results when a longer time is spent in gear.
However, at light pedal or road load, single step upshifts will occur. The small 10-speed gear steps allow the engine speed to drop to lower values than it would in the 6-speed transmission; providing for the best fuel economy. In contrast, when the 10-speed transmission is at heavy or max pedal, the small steps keep the engine closer to the horsepower peak for best performance.
Down shift Gear Sequence
At times the 10-speed transmission may skip gears when the vehicle down shifts to a complete stop. This is normal and desired behavior.
The same skip shift strategy that is used for the upshift may be applied during down shift.

I skip from 4th to 6th almost every time I merge onto the highway.
Thanks!

My 2014 f150 with the 6 speed tranny and 3.5 averages 25 mpg on highway and around 20 in city
Another great video. Always learn something. Those "Everything wrong with" videos are popular right now and I'd love to see how you would do them!
I got the 3.5. My truck never uses 2nd. I feel it going into 3rd usually. The rest are so smooth I don’t even know
10 speed is actually a perfect transmission if you're towing the transmission will use all the gears if you're driving lately with no load it will skip gears sounds good to me
I think it also could have something to do with the drivers habits, because the computers recognize driving patterns.
Sing strategy is used for semi sure with automatic transmissions they do have skipped gear strategy based on the load the torque demand of the engine
Agreed!
But what of the hard shifts 3-4-5 or hard downshifts that a lot of 10 speeders complain about ? Not smooth and heavy clunking
It goes to shift from 3rd to 4th and it jerks you forward and the RPMs go up and you have to let off the gas and then get back on it
Good info as always from your channel. Thanks Bryan
My 2018 3.5 did this and I hated the way it drove. Got the truck tuned and it goes threw the gears and doesn't skip gears now. Runs sooo much better
How do you get it tuned?
Mpt tuning. Currently running their performance/tow tune
Awesome video, put my mind to rest on my 2022 3.3 F-150.
Thank you for sharing, I have wondered why my 2018 f150 did this .
The best thing for people to do is turn the gear indicator off as well as other gauge displays they know nothing about. Watch the temp and oil pressure and keep up the maintenance, it'll tell you when something is wrong. Or you'll feel something wrong/ abnormal.
I thought you were in snap-on mode. That S in red reminds me of the S in snap-on tools. 😂👍🍻
How about hard shifts into 4th and 8th on 2020 3.5?
What a weird situation - an owner has the wherewithal to realize that the trans is skipping gears and, at the same time, not understand that skipping gears on a 10 speed trans would not only be normal, but expected
Just wait till it starts bucking when cold and slamming into gears at low speed trust me it’s coming.
After 68 years of driving Fords, he swore off of ever buying another.))
Thanks for the video!
Semi trucks with automatic transmissions have been doing that for a while. They call it progressive shifting.
back in the day the 5r55e used to skip gears depending on demand
I always thought the reason for so many gears was to keep RPMs in the best range for MPG. If its skipping gears on light acceleration i guess thats not the case? I think im missing the point.
The quicker it gets to the higher gears the better the fuel economy.
If Ford wouldn't have put the gear indicator on display would have solved alot of concerns
Great for that guy eating the steak in the "matrix". He didn't want to know the truth.
It is on the display
My 2021 F-150 2.7 eco can’t decide what gear to be in. In gatlinburgh it really was a mess in the mountains. I just got a recall. Hopefully for this problem. Thanks again!
My 18 has been tuned since day 1. Trans shifts perfectly
What tune?
I’ve been using Unleashed Tuning for 15+ years
Didn’t you watch Brian’s latest video about tuning your eco-boost? If not, you better look at it. Peace, brother.
@@JosephLane-j4z. My truck is a 5.0 n/a. You’re fine tuning Ecoboost engines, 1) get a very reputable tuner 2) don’t tune on the ragged edge
I've always felt like it was just a 5 spd with half gears. The only time it goes through every single gear is in sport ot tow/haul mode. I bought my '18 5.0 f150 new, and just recently hit 100k miles with 0 issues. Skipping gears is completely normal for the 10spd.
Lucky you, my 2020 made it to 35K kms (22k mi) before it got a new trans installed
It’s like the fuse gets lit right after warranty expires. Not sure how long it’s gonna burn before it goes pop but it’s gonna happen.
Problem for me is that when it downshifts - it’s starting to “jerk” a bit. 2019 eco boost 10 speed. Thinking of taking it in. Hard shift
My 2017 3.5 bangs gear almost every time it’s driven anymore. It’s getting old. Truck has 27.000. That’s it
@@JosephLane-j4z I took mine into the dealer and there was a broken pin within the transmission.
I think this transmission has 4 more gears than is necessary. I have the 6r80 in my 2011 XLT, and that's good enough for me.
I had a 2016 with the 6spd that was perfect for daily driving but when it comes to towing, the 10spd in my 2020 tows far better
Have you had any software updates done there’s a few available
My truck is at the dealer for a new trans as we speak. Bad cdf clutch drum. Bushing cracked and walked out of position. Junk
@@craigryder3712 not sure, but I'll check. Thanks 😊
It's not normal
Have been driving semi's with an Eaton 18 automatic for a number of yrs and that's normal, put a load on and shifts in them all.
That's helpful info, would love to hear your take on the adaptive learning on these things, which to me is way more annoying. It's basically not the truck you tested, bought, and drove off the lot afer 200 miles, it's something you want to run into a phone pole and set on fire.
Yeah mine has gone from 23 avg mpg down to 14 currently. Shift points all over the place. Redline on Rpm. Ford says it’s normal. Not normal.
You dont mention the cdf clutch drum issue with these 10 speeds
I've got 2018 5.0 f150 10 speed that up shifts like this video.. BUT, mine started hard down shift in lower gears (2 thru5) at 35,298 miles. Took to dealer, diagnosed clutch drum needs replacing. I'm at 35,060 miles awaiting parts. Thank goodness I have extended warranty with $100 deductible
Service advisor says they (dealer) gets about one of these a month, any year with 10 speed transmission not included 2021 and newer.
Both my 2018 3.5’s did the skip shifting regularly, my 21 3.5 rarely did it, my 22 2.7 has never skip shifted.
It's in the owner's manual that it might skip. Silly me...nobody reads about their vehicle's performance or maintenance or operation...etc
Also, many trucks are low on fluid from the factory. Check them at temperature or at least do the proper cold check like this guy shows in another vehicle. I consider cold to be room temperature or slightly above as no one has actually said what it should be.
I have a 2021 2.7 ecoboost.. has NEVER skipped a gear on upshift
Which beggs the question... why is a TEN speed transmision required? More stuff to go wrong.
Skipping gears saves fuel under light loads
Would love to see an update regarding all the 10R80 CDF drum bushings. Ford keeps telling me it's normal... when we all know the truth. Just waiting for it to completely fail and my wife and kids stranded...
Does the 10R60 do this too? No gear indicator on the Bronco to tell easily.
Yes
My 18 F150 (2.7) has skipped from day one. Seems to do it after I start it up on cold days. As soon as it starts to roll it acts like it won't go I get a gentle clunk then it goes. If I let it warm up good it doesn't do it.
Forscan and reset the learn shift.
How about hanging 3rd to 4th in a false neutral and revving up to 4k then shifting? What's the diagnosis for that. Always does it when cold.
cdf bushing. theres quite a few vids on youtube about it. plus a couple that takes the cdf drum out to show what bushing shifts to cause a harsh 3rd to 4th
So we should NOT perceive any bucking or jerking when the transmission skips a gear, correct?
My 2022 F250 7.3L I swear moves forward and clunks sometimes on start up. It’s almost like the transmission shifts into gear at startup without me doing it. Only every so often. Any thoughts?
not sure about the 2022s.. thought they had that taken care of but i remember coming across a video where the driveshaft with turn a little on start up. had something to do with the driveshaft and a bushing or something
Exactly what my 20 5.0 does.
Also if downshifting uphill usually goes from 10th to 8th.
19 2.7 F-150 skip shifts. My new ‘23 same engine goes through all gears in normal mode. It’s very smooth though, different strategy for ‘23🤷♂️

Other than the computer screen I like the dash and gauges.
Those screens are just a future repair, that i'd skip, unless state ingestion demands it.
Most people have no clue on how transmission works...my 4r100 even has adaptive learning...it changes everytime with your driving habits...
What is the transmission in the 2023 ford f150
Rumor has it that those ATs are a ZF design but made by Linamar in CDA. So Ford buys them and hopes for the best. But trying to keep track of shifting with 10 speeds can make you loco.
No we all didn't know about all the other problems. When will they show up and how bad are they?
Mine used to skip those gears pretty effortlessly. Now all sudden it skips and hard shifts at low speeds. Pronounced hard
Ideas?
At 7:05 ... That does not give me much confidence at all. I'm driving my 5-speed manual transmission 2005 ranger till the wheels fall off.
Slightly off topic my 2012 focus purchase brand new has transmission issues....🤷
I think that is why Ram has held onto the 8spd for so long.
I have heard of turning off the adaptive learning in the computer. Is there an advantage to doing this?
I am wondering because I had to have a new transmission put in at about 63,000 miles. Have just under 10,000 miles on new transmission.
I noticed today that my truck (2020 5.0) in sport mode is less likely to skip gears, even leaving from an intersection at part throttle. It'll do 1->2->-3->4->5...
The normal skip-gear strategy is pretty decent otherwise.
Mine would skip depending on the incline of the road or slope in sport mode, but freeway ramps were always a lot of fun.
I used to drive a 13 speed automatic semi-truck and it used to do the same thing on level ground while empty it would skip a gear up and down
Hey, What about the 2022 Explorer ST, If you get down on it hard and it sounds/feels like it Slipped into the next gear because of the hesitation, then it catches.
