I’m getting ready to take my 2018 f150 10r80 out because it’s having the issue where it goes only into 1-2 gear and then locks when going into 3rd. Ford said their tech of 25 years has never seen it. I appreciate your knowledge! Thank you
2018 here as well. It was doing that same thing until the transmission temp was around 180-190, then it wouldn't be so bad. We'll shame on me I had the transmission serviced, fluids, and filter. We'll that was the wrong thing to do. The truck is a paperweight now because driving it is not safe. Loss of power, can't shift fully, slams into gear when it does and the gear indicator quickly jumps around. I've seen it go from 8th gear to 1st!!! Luckily, because the transmission is such a pos that the ecm sent the signal to go back to 8 before the transmission actually did shift to 1st.
@@imadog131 it cost me around $4300. This includes a lot of things including new valve body, updated CDF drum, New Front Support, also used Amsoil Fluid.
Probably one cause for the failure is the high temps. My guess is the aluminum drum expands more than the bushing material so then the bushing is smaller than the bore and easily slide. No different than when you heat or cool parts to get a "slip" fit that becomes an interference fit once the pieces are the same temperature.
I'll be covering some of that in a future video. You are correct, I was having the same issues. I switched to Oz tuning and he was able to get that fixed for me. I'm not exactly sure what he does but I know he changes the fueling to keep it from dying.

I liked my livernois tune as well but my truck was dying at almost every single red light and stop sign. After I put my new motor in I got with Ken and started the tuning process shortly thereafter. It takes a few revisions for him to get everything perfect but it's worth it. My truck also picked up about a half second on 93 and a full second on e85 in the quarter mile. That's running a 3.875 on 93 and a 3.5 on e85. Same pulleys as the livernois tune.
I have an ‘18 2.7 with 5* 93 Performance tune - that just turned over 100k. It seems to be running fine. What could I be doing within my power to keep it running good? More frequent service? Additive? Not sure if it matter, I drive it in M mode 75% of the time. I don’t trust it to search for gears.
So is it safe to say this issue was self induced with all these mods added and hard trailer pulling and not so much a problem with the stock trans? I Got a powerboost and using it for normal daily driving, im always concerned of reliability from all thesee trans rebuild videos popping up in my feed...

You guys did not address the trashcan/outer shell being made of aluminum with steel gears, running against it. With my knowledge of materials aluminum wears out much faster than steel. To me it seems like the Chevy/Ford 10 speed transmissions were made to fail very quickly. I have a 22 Mach one Mustang with 9000 miles on it and the transmission is crap already. It is in a dealership now I’m thinking they are going to void my warranty
can you help with my 2020 expedition max 3.5l EcoBoost with 10r80. After drove for 20 mins when trans at 5th gear and I hit the gas pedal hard to accelerate, the car feel like something hit it ( vibrate hard) and no gear show in the dash, after 1-2 second its show 4th gear or 5th gear and keep driving fine. does not happened when cold start. I checked fluid at 206 deg and it is between 5 and 6 on the dip. only happened at 5th gear with accelerate hard. soft acceleration did not happen.
Being a 23 model your transmission almost certainly has the updated CDF drum but it does not have upgraded clutch packs and steels. It doesn't have any extra clutch packs and steels in certain areas either. It should be better than previous years but it is not considered a built transmission. Having it built aftermarket is the only way to upgrade its capacity and durability. That being said the upgraded CDF drum is a great start.

@toddjohnson7787 Heat is what kills transmissions and cats. If you don't dog it all the time and make back to back to back pulls you're going to be fine. I would recommend having the transmission and oil temps visible to monitor and always be aware of them. You can do that with forscan if you have the digital dash. If not I would recommend getting an aftermarket product for that. It makes you pay attention and not do dumb stuff at the worst possible time. I learned this lesson the hard way.

I have a problem with a 2018 Raptor / oil spilling from the ventilation pipe / then I noticed that one of the cooling oil pipes is hot and another pipe is cold / I think the oil cooling cycle has a problem so the transmission becomes hotter / but have you encountered the same problem and what are the solutions? @ that’s awesome I’m glad to hear because I’m new to the coyote game and the 10r80 but I was very nervous about the transmission not being any good but my 2020 f150 is still doing great I’m just looking at doing preventative maintenance to it and getting the transmission built to get it prepared for future mods such as a supercharger and tuned to be a daily and still have all that power on tap for towing and racing and some mild off-roading

I would say at best prepare for to put some updated/upgraded parts in your transmission very soon that will increase the longevity how much we don’t do not know. Versus worst case scenario Ford voiding your warranty like they’ve done to people, and then you have to either pay somebody to build The transmission properly or sell trade the vehicle. As of now, I have major doubts about the longevity and durability of this Chevy Ford built 10 speed transmission to me. I don’t understand how you can have steel working against aluminum and not have the aluminum where very quickly the gears are steel and the trashcan/outer shell is aluminum.

I mean like when would the New Built Updated FORD 10R80's that are actually sent to the dealership's actually be in the System. How much longer ? are we talking about one year, going to two years of longevity or one year to 30 years in longevity?
According to my knowledge, fixing a 10R80 transmission for a Mustang costs around 4 grand, while the whole assembly costs 4 grand without installation. At these prices, why would you opt for repair? Am I missing something?
If you buy a new one you don’t get the upgrades and it will break again after you add power. The built stock trans is much stronger and fixes the design flaws.
The new transmissions probably have the upgraded CDF drum but they will not have upgraded steels and clutches as well as extra steels and clutches in the high risk drums of the transmission. You are basically paying to upgrade so the transmission can handle more power for a longer period of time.
My 2022 Mach, 1 Mustang with 9000 miles on it is at the dealership now and I think they’re going to void my warranty. Engine and transmission is stock no power adders/no forced induction no tunes no nothing. In this video, they don’t address or even talk about the trashcan/outer shell being made of aluminum and the gears being made of steel. The steel is going to be much tougher and durable than the aluminum. To me it seems like Chevy and Ford both somehow did not know that the steel would wear out the aluminum! Was it because you had too many people involved and too many gaps of detail and knowledge? I’m just a man that’s been on this planet for a number of decades and I’ve seen how different materials function and react together and to me it seems like the Ford 10R80/Chevy 10L80 rebuilt to fail quickly.
The 10r80 is a piece of garbage from the factory. Blew mine this year at 59,500 miles, stock. Month later it was replaced. A month after that it blew the oil pan gasket and spewed all my atf fluid, had to be towed after it left me stranded in one of the worst parts of St. Louis. New trans is sloppy just like the last one.

After multiple dealer visits and pathetic patch fixes as i call them (resetting of the computer to relearn driving habits) i was left with the same problems over and over. I got ignorant with my service manager and he literally told me the only way ford will fix it is if i blew it up so thats what i did. I drove it into the ground, stop light to stop light, highway pulls, brake torques. It finally started slipping and was slamming gears even harder. They tried replacing the valve body first which led them having my truck stuck in gear. They dismantled my 10r80 and said multiple clutch packs were burnt, bushings destroyed and main input shaft was chewed up where a bushing was sliding instead of remaining in place. It got replaced with a brand new 10r80. It still suffers from the original shifting issues. On the highway the transmission is fine, its when you make sudden stops or cruise the hills when it gets completely lost and im not happy with it. Its a 2018 with the 5.0L. Friends with multiple other brands dont experience this nonsense. I left the GM world after questionable quality issues, seems Ford isnt any better. Whats truly sad is gm uses a different tune on its 10l80 and suffers far less issues. Ford on the other hand has to keep paying lawyers off to keep them out of a multi-billion dollar recall

There is a class action lawsuit currently that was filed in May, I believe that you should look into.

I thought ford fixed the dcf bushing issue with a revised part and it was not supposed to do that anymore?

I have a 2023 XLT. Is rebuilding the 10R80 the only way to have the updated CDF drum and some of the other components?

Check the transmission cooler thermo bypass valve , its known that it will stuck closed or open , and it looks like yours is stuck closed.

On the highway the transmission is fine, its when you make sudden stops or cruise the hills when it gets completely lost and im not happy with it. Its a 2018 with the 5.0L. Friends with multiple other brands dont experience this nonsense. I left the GM world after questionable quality issues, seems Ford isnt any better. Whats truly sad is gm uses a different tune on its 10l80 and suffers far less issues. Ford on the other hand has to keep paying lawyers off to keep them out of a multi-billion dollar recall
