- While waiting for a steam special a Virgin Pendolino appeared on the up line at Rugeley Trent Valley station. It appeared to be fresh out of the works and was on a test run. Lots of activity by the train crew. It finally limped into the station and put all local service on hold incruding the special.Appologies for the commentry.
I think the Pendolino was the steam special.

I remember being on one of these when the same thing happened. I think its a problem with the brakes that stick on and overheat. I imagine the driver was waiting for them to cool down.
One of the biscuits must have spontaneously combusted out of boredom.

Hi, the steam engine was 70000 Brittania and the date was sometime in late 2012. Unfortunately I was unable to remain on site due to other commitments. With the amount of smoke comming from the pendolio it was nearly as good as a steam special.

That is steam, if the train was on fire the smoke would be black. Possible cooling radiator rupture somewhere in the engine or transformer part. It is an electric train.

It looked like the brakes for the far end of the train, the opposite cab end to the end the train was being controlled from, were dragging. This would explain the smoke, especially if the train was fresh out of the works

oops somebody probably forgot turn the switch changing the supply system to the higher range. this could only happen if somebody run the train switched to lower range then real in the trolley

I saw a 390 at Roade running slow with some grey smoke coming from it.

If you read it properly you would see there is no mention of the pendolino being a steam train!
Traction motor fire perhaps? Perhaps some grease could have ignited from excessive heat or a spark. Or it could have been a short circuit causing arcing between motors/bogies/wires/something.

This would of been doing it’s testing after just being lengthened to 11 coaches

its likely a dragging brake which is sort of a fire since the friction of the brake for an extended period of time would heat up the brake till it overheats which is when it would start smoking or it could have been a overheating traction motor which in that case they just need to cut the motor out and continue

When I worked for Virgin Trains we had the same problem approaching Stoke on Trent from Manchester. It had to be taken out of service. Brake under coach H caught fire. and filled the carriage with smoke.
I traveled on the Pendolino Euston - Manchester Picc Feb. 2006. When we went through that deep cut through The Potteries I was astonished at how fast we were going.

Looks like dragging brakes Pendolinos' suffered with this problem, brake control wire A fails and causes the brakes to apply on one vehicle the trains are so powerful that the driver wouldn't know until the pass com is pulled, TMS later modified to show the driver all the vehicle brake pressures along with added alarms in cab
