Live in the present. Now is the time for reflection and regeneration. Spring is around the corner. Thanks for another reality check-in 👍. It may be lonely at times, but you're not alone. You've lived a life of service to others. And you continue to do so now.
@chrismears-inslowtime Hiya Chris, I'm going to work tonight so I'll be away for about 10 days. When I'm back I'll come and visit you so I'll get in touch and find out where you are. Hope you're well, lookinv forward to a good natter! See you soon x
Never found any of your vlogs 'mundane' Chris, never been disappointed, but this episode is a corker. Top work, Including the 'veg and two veg' at the end 😊
I once heard it said Gardners were the RR of UK Diesels, nice lump. You might say to Colin that my Dad used to insist that you won't get a true sump oil reading unless you wipe your dipstick.
Well if your Dad said that! it's good enough for me, I will do that, however , just a thought , if you wipe the dipstick, then put it back in ...... the true level of oil reading has gone , because it in now the tru level -minus the oil on dipstick which in the rag😇
Met Colin at Norton junction after he had only been on the boat a few days. Loving it already. Old engines in a dedicated engine room are a thing of beauty and it will keep you occupied during those long winter days. I know my lister JP does.
And in the winter when you need to check out it’s all working, it keeps you warm and a drys the clothes. I agree it is nice just listening to it. Thanks Pete. Enjoy.
Pete, thank you for you comment, yes a thing of beauty indeed, and the sound of diesel engine of perfection. I am privileged to be the current custodian of 'Grander' my name for him, he will in service long after I have shuffled my mortal coil. I do hope he does not fall victim to the new wave of ill informed folks with their political agendas . Pete thanks again. Best Regards Colin
This was hilarious and kept me smiling the whole time! I think I blushed there at the end🤭. I said, whaat? I mean you can’t unsee a carrot and two potatoes 😂
That clip at the beginning.... I love watching stupid, time wasting videos, then I watch yours, funny, well made, and entertaining, thanks Chris. Best wishes Christine x
Thank you Christine. I appreciate the support. Did you watch the Chinese squeaky chicken and the blindfolded fella whipping them. So funny. It’s great to see a sense of humour in all walks of life.
I think I prefer the bag of spinach, Chris! You just gotta love those old engines. I think I'd be very tempted to add a few feet to the mooring fee to have a dedicated engine room for a nice duga-duga engine. Colin is a right character. As a Scouser I approve of his meal! A cooking challenge for you, Chris. Make a bowl of Scouse. Definitely put the Worcchesheeshtershire Schscauchce in. They say it's optional. No it's not! Nothing better than a big bowl of Scouse after a cold winter day. I don't know what these critics are talking about. Your videos have become my Wednesday tradition. I watch them while getting ready for work and you're always up to something different. Keep em coming mate.
Wait till next week Mick. You’re to blame as you gave me the idea. As for a bowl of Scouse….I need to ask Scouse for the recipe. That’ll be interesting to see if there are variations. As for the Worcestershire sauce, yes, a must. Despite forgetting it at the time. Thanks for the support.
Mistake I think on crumble rub with finger tips butter into flour, then when crumbs stir in sugar👍compress down for firm crumble, or leave loose for lighter crumble. You did put a smile on many people's faces I'm sure with you two potatoes and carrot placed on the table👍keep smiling chris😊❤
Thank you for the tip Jean. Next time I make crumble, I’ll give it a go. It has put me off crumble for a while though. It was dreadful. The carrot nose and potato eyes were a nice touch at the end as people mentioned the spinach last week. I think there are many who may have thought it looked differently! But a smile is what counts. What’s in next weeks?
Loved the vlog. It's like listening to someone down the pub with a good take of life, but not the one that bores the pants off you! Cheers David aka Davis. My Welsh roots must be showing!
It's not eccentric - it's dapper 😊 I enjoyed learning about Colins engine, he seemed very proud of it, however, I think you made a great point when you simply started your engine with a simple flick of a switch. Nobody can call this weeks vlog 'samey' after that weird and wonderful start, it made me laugh. As always, thanks for sharing Chris, keep 'em coming
Thank you Gordon. Colin is a bit of a petrol head so he likes his engines. Me….it’s something I need to look after as it’s important. It’s just an engine. Hopefully a few more laughs along the way.
😂 loving it. I enjoyed this . I've been up since 3. Busted foot, so going nowhere.Big boot Life is a little bit less mundane because you made this, thank you.
Morning Chris. When I make a crumble I don’t compress the crumble topping onto of the fruit. Helps it to stay lighter. I also sometimes cook the crumble separately on a baking tray - which makes the crumble topping a bit crisper all the way through. Great video Chris. We are very familiar with that bit of the Oxford/Grand Union. It is only about an hour from our marina - so either the start or end of our journey. Have a great week. Debbie and Roger.
Thanks Debbie and Roger. I was told about the compress bit but I didn’t know what that meant. A bloke thing as I don’t do soft that often. Chick flicks yes…pressing the crumble…no. Clearly. It was dreadful. I think the ducks didn’t sink they just didn’t come back
Belly laughs. Bloody brilliant vlog. Loved the engine start up. Dead proper. Lovely mash up Chris, don’t grumble about a crumble. Laughed out loud when you suggested the ducks may have sunk. Bit concerned about the downward dog and the later imagery of the spuds n carrot. Colin..rockin the dickie… brilliant
Hi Chris yet another stunning video from you.. Very interesting and informative. It's refreshing to see someone who gives a honest assessment of what life is like living on a narrow boat.. Yourself and a few others have got to be commended for your videos I am looking forward to the next video of yours..I think that people who move onto a narrow boat are looking for peace and quiet..and want to get away from the hectic life they once lived..I might be wrong but for years I have asked this question . And have always got the same answer .. they seem to always say that they have had enough of being pressured at work or at Thier homes..and they decided that living on a narrow boat was the lifestyle that would give them the peace they were seeking..???? Anyway mate keep safe and well.
I’m pushing a vid out on Sunday as I discuss life on an electric boat. A couple who have lived a few weeks on theirs. The point you made rings trues with them at least. But…..it’s a job living on a boat unless you chose to allow the boat to suffer. Always something to do but it is in slow time which makes a difference. Thanks Wayne.
Nice vlog Chris / I do like old engines and their unique sounds, with the practicality of having its own engine room for maintenance… but is it worth the trade off for space compared to an under cover engine, I don’t know (maybe would need a bigger boat) 😂 It was great to watch the comparison of starting - have to agree much easier with a turn of a key 😅 I was expecting Colin to be wearing wellies with his bow tie and jeans 😮 As for sunken duck… watch they don’t come back for your well placed carrot and potatoes on the table 😂 Nice to see the polished brasses, springs definitely on its way, longer days, shorter nights good for the soul
Thanks Jon. I agree with the engine thing and apparently, it comes out in stages so needs to be taken apart in situ. That’s a marina thing but then I know if I need a replacement engine, so will mine. No1 thing…..look after the engine. It’s a life line. More of Colin to come over the coming months. Brasses are minging again. DIdn’t take long.
Daughter and partner bough very old narrow boat two months ago. They've got a huge engine about a hird of the way, not heard it yet. I'm glad you showed it starting up because i thought the first fifteen minutes was going to be the noise level and with it being inside the boat that wasn't the best, but it was okay. The other problem is the blessed space its taking up! I can't see how the two of them are going live on it. Its a 60footer. Only came across your channel today (4/12). Off to watch some more episodes. Cheers🤗
Nice shiny brass! You can use a fork to mix the crumble, does the same job as fingers but less messy 🙂 also maybe stew the apple a little bit first, makes it nice and soft. Colin's cassoulet looked yummy. Great music as ever, good laugh in the beginning, glad you didn't fall as the corner of the table was right in front of you!
You’ll find room for it all I’m sure Craig. That said, I’m look for a storage unit to off load half of my stuff. Too much by a long way. Enjoy the boat.
The rain is still here but it’s certainly warming up and the extra light makes a shed load of difference. Clocks change end of the month. Wow, that’s gone quick.
Well, thank you for showing this.. I am not coming over until September now.. and I always said to colin (him) that if you get an engine like that, do not leave me with the boat .. Now I have seen how you start it... do not leave me with the boat....😅.. l much prefer the way you start your boat.. but i can see why he likes it it takes planning...and he loves to plan.. I tell him, "You love planning so much you plan you next you next breathe." 😂 I know he is really enjoying the boat life ..or being away from me 😅 ...keep having fun ..Heather
But Heather…..think of how warm you’ll be in the winter when he is up the top moving the boat. Free heat and a great drying room. Noisy perhaps but…. Now the planning thing…..I’ve identified that and hopefully by the time you get on the boat he may have relaxed a bit more on the planning side. He’s got your brother to look after from Saturday. That’ll keep him busy.
You are getting to know him quickly .. if you and get him to relax and let thing just be.. and my saying to him is, is it life-threatening, and will it be there tomorrow 🤔 has you may be guessing we are total opposites. I am a little maybe to layed back.. until it comes to having a mess, then I can't stand mess lol, but the one great thing about Colin is when he is your friend he has totally got your back....keep having fun ....
Cracking video again Chris. When you’ve taught Colin correct VP will you be moving on to BATCO? 😉😂 Binge watching your videos mate and “mundane” is definitely NOT in the description vocabulary.👍
Thanks Dave. I would have used the custard or ice cream had it been any good. I’m pleased I didn’t waste the pleasant toppings on a pile of crap. To be honest I think the ducks F**ked off as it was so bad!
Brilliant vlog. Always entertaining - somehow even making a crumble was great to watch. You might want to use a bit less crumble mix in proportion to your apple - it would be slightly less stodgy. I have to say I’ve never put salt in a crumble - sugar yes, but not salt. Watching you mix the apples and cinnamon with your hands made me laugh! Love that you tried that ridiculous TikTok thing - your humour is spot on for me. Hilarious. Nothing wrong with mundane - most people’s lives are pretty mundane most of the time, whether they are in big houses or small boats. You make it sound more interesting than a lot of people so I wouldn’t worry about a few whingers. Keep on keeping on Chris. Out of interest, what are your ear plugs? Do you listen to music, or are they to reduce engine noise etc? How’s the merch coming on? I’d still like a hoodie!! Have a great week 😊
Thanks for the comment and support Mishka. There is a lot of this sensationalist stuff that I don’t like yet felt compelled to try that one out. It did it’d job but I refuse to follow the creator as it’s quite frankly bollox. Of course you’re right about mundane lives. Its hard to create truth in a entertaining way. I have a three types of ear plugs, all which have music piped through as it’s easier when filming. I don’t get told off by UA-cam that way. The white ones are Sennheiser Momentum 2 and the others are JBL. They allow ambient noise so I can listen to conversations and the engine as well as answer the phone which rings often when I’m cruising and very little when not! The merch is coming.
Great vlog once again Chris, thank you for sharing. That engine was a piece of art and if you are an engine buff, a beautiful thing to have, however as I'm not particularly a petrol head I would likely end up with an engine like yours. I think in a previous vlog I mentioned that I too have some history with VP and have carried that on through amateur radio. If I had a boat one of the first things on my to-do list would be to install a collapsible mast and at minimum a VHF system for local repeater Comms or even simplex occasionally. HF would be more of a challenge but easy enough to get a fan dipole up for a couple of bands, always someone out there for a QSO or in a time of need. Great stuff and that crumble looked really tasty.....😊
I was always fascinated by HF comms. It’s an art. However, it’s great to know someone is on the same frequency so I can really understand whether the antenna is working or not. Directional antennas was always a dark art but really effective. In the dessert, I increase the range of the radio equipment by increasing the ground plain and frequency. It should never have worked but the dry land made the attenuation decrease. As for the crumble…..I was better at getting comms with a HF radio with no-one listening on the other end!
Thanks for the video again, Chris. Great to see the first of the "outdoor eatings" as spring leads its way into summer. I know you won't mind if I share a thought with you moving forwards. Over the course of the next spring/summer, save some of your video content of visits and places of interest for your winter content. ie, "Places I visited Last Summer", type of thing. Just a thought. Take care.
Very cool vlog Chris nothing better than dressing up and a dickie bow to boot 👍👌. liking the radio communications bit , Done my training round warminster on the backpack C40 I think it was C 45 on foot me my friend won the Little competition. Dad who get round the course the fastest and the most correct positions it was a few cans of beer , Say again . Was common with radio uses in the normal speech😂 have a good one , you probably need a seat detachable type of when you’re at the backend steering too take the Weight off your joints .👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍
Thanks for the comment Tom. I joined up as Clansman came in. Say Again was still a phrase used a lot. I still sue it now. It’s the tell tale sign of an ex squaddie. The seat of the back is a useful thing and I now understand why people have them. Never considered it at the time.
Itemized checklists are something I am familiar with. Starting up a 1912 vintage electric tram requires both conceptual knowledge and the ability to follow a checklist. Communication is a safety essential: radio checks are carried out, with the sender identifying who they want to speak to, and then identifying themselves, exactly as you did. The crumble looked good--sometimes the seemingly simplest things take some practice to perfect. One thing I like to make is granola. It keeps well, and it can contain as many ingredients as you want. For me, it's important to eat as many species as possible since I can't digest meat properly. Eating 35 different species a day is fairly easy with granola and salads. Another way to get lots of variety is stewing mixed dried fruit. It can be tossed into a bowl of granola or yogurt--or both. Great for the gut biome. I rather like Colin's sartorial eccentricity. I don't wear a bow tie, but I almost always wear a canvas vest, which protects all those areas with sensitive surgery scars and messed up nerve endings. How many people were looking at the carrot and potato "still life" arrangement as you were talking about mundane life? More than will likely admit it, I'm sure. 😂
Thanks Peter. I think all those who like to look after anything do what they think is a proper job. I was told once, properly is good enough. Even if you have a bad day and you do the bear minimum, if you do it properly, it'll be a good enough job. The crumble. It tasted ok for the first few bites then it went to the ducks. I don't think they came back for more which is why they dispersed quite quickly. The veg thing will be a regular feature for ma short time. See who watches out for the changes. Granola. Good idea.
Chris, If you're having back problems after long periods of standing, you might want to give Skechers "arch fit" shoes a try. A friend of mine suggested them to me, what a revelation. I rarely wear any other footwear now.
I'm in the "kick tyres and take off" set so don't understand the the idea of carrying a lump of old iron around. However, it must make a good drying room so not all bad. 😄
I did that in the car. The VW just worked and the onboard computer told you when anything was wrong. The engine is one of those thing many don’t pay too much attention to. My head is in the engine bay at least twice a week. However the Gardner drying room….absolutely.
Your friends boat having that particular engine on the "inside", so a few Q: 1) is that "Gardiner" easier to service (spare parts etc) ? 2) Are there "other" styles of "Gardiner", for example, a smaller size but still can be used inside ? Lastly, would this need a special cover (for insurance) or is there just a generic insurance cover for most narrowboats ? Thank you for your help.
Crumble looked banging ..you ave a lot to live up to spring and summmer on the way..do you lnow carl pilkington the moaning off life ..yours is the moaning off boating 😂
I could be wrong, but I thought I remembered you saying you were putting your coal ash in your composting bins. I watched another narrowboater today who said they throw out their ash, because coal ash is toxic to plants. I also think I heard you say you were going to use your compost in boxes of flowers. Now I'm wondering if that will actually work.
It is stated that ash can spoil plants but if it is used in the winter and should be dug in. I add it to duty out the contents and to be honest while it was a though to grow flowers, I can’t see that ever happening. So my use of the ash is mainly to make the process easier to manage. To put ash on the towpath and not dig it in is unsightly and the local residents have put out fires caused by boaters not allowing the ash to cool. I do what I do as it works for me. Thanks for the comment Jane.
I’ve rarely texted you after reading the previous comments. You’ve got to be feeling good and appreciated after reading these. I tried sending you my info about your art. Please, let me know if I was successful or not. If not, I’ll give it another go. Lastly, just my opinion, I suggest that you MAKE “ME TIME “ for yourself. Otherwise, why be a narrow boater? As always, I wish you the best, Tom.
Not sure where you sent you email address Tom. Try nbinslowtime@gmail.com To date nothing has come through on any account I use. ME TIME is happening more at the moment as I’m able to create content easier travelling with Colin and of course the lighter days help immensely. Thanks mate.
Possibly. But hopefully that'll be someone else's problem. There are plenty of standard marine engines that are still making the propeller turn40 years on. I don't have that amount of time left on the planet.
A fun video, thanks. Love the carrot and potatoes 😁
The veg at the end…..did you see the nose and eyes or….? Thanks Will.
@@chrismears-inslowtime No. Sorry My mind was too low so it was the or... .

Amen to that,
Love the Gardner Engine.
I’m beginning to like them too. Even with the amount of space they use up.
Yes, the potatoes and carrot finished it off nicely Chris!
We need to catch up Janine. Moving today and I’m moving to a more urban area and easier for parking.
@chrismears-inslowtime Hiya Chris, I'm going to work tonight so I'll be away for about 10 days. When I'm back I'll come and visit you so I'll get in touch and find out where you are. Hope you're well, lookinv forward to a good natter! See you soon x

Hi Chris we think you do more than most to make your vlogs interesting and varied a job that’s not at all easy at this time of year well done

Thank you Jacquline. I appreciate the support and comment.
Jacqueline, I am assuming you are referring to the GARDNER 3LW, 😀
"Sunk" made me chuckle
I’m sure you’ll be please to know, some ducks did come back….not sure they were the same ducks! Thanks for the support Kev.

Cheers David aka Davis. My Welsh roots must be showing!
Thanks Davis I made a leek and potato soup the other day. Lovely. You would have been proud!
Nice work there Chris, Colin's engine was rather good. Never trust anyone who doesnt use checklists!
I agree with the list thing. I’m not so good with lists as it’s another job to do. What does that mean? Thanks for the comment Rob.
Ain't that the truth cheers Rob
It's not eccentric - it's dapper 😊

Thanks for the support Dean.

Thank you Russell. I pleased you enjoyed it. Sorry to hear about the foot. Painful I’m sure. Hope it gets better soon.
I have started the day with a smile and I thank you for that. 🥳
Thank you. I appreciate the support.
Possibly the best vlog you've done. Keep Collin in the picture he's a hoot. That's an awful small carrot...
We’ll see more of Colin I’m sure. A small veg for a carrot perhaps…..
Thanks for your comment

I’m going to match his style one day. Maybe you’ll see something fresh next week. Just need to film it. Thanks for the comment and support Malcolm.
Malcolm, how kind, thank you very much.
Great 👍 and music choice today was spot on. One of your better ones.
Thanks Russ. I appreciate the support.
Less sugar Chris and use a fork to mix the ingredients. That will make your crumble lighter. Great vlog as usual.
Thanks Jo. Not sure I’m going to made a crumble in the near future. It put me off a bit.

Thanks John. The downward dog thing is a good thing for the back. It kills me on a long cruise. Not making crumble for a while. It put me off.
Thanks John, we don't dress up enough, thanks for your comments

It was great to watch the comparison of starting - have to agree much easier with a turn of a key 😅
I was expecting Colin to be wearing wellies with his bow tie and jeans 😮
As for sunken duck… watch they don’t come back for your well placed carrot and potatoes on the table 😂
Nice to see the polished brasses, springs definitely on its way, longer days, shorter nights good for the soul

Yep it is, I cooked another one this week. No video though.
Another good one, thanks Chris - Why did you spoil the Gardner engine with the soundtrack though? They make their own music 😉
Plenty of time to listen to the music from the Gardner in the future. I did like the music for it though. Quite appropriate I thought.
I thought that ........ but its Chris's vlog
Always find your vlogs interesting and funny Chris mate. Been busy with our new launch and move! Still got stuff all over the shop!
You’ll find room for it all I’m sure Craig. That said, I’m look for a storage unit to off load half of my stuff. Too much by a long way. Enjoy the boat.
Love the vlog !!! Great sense of humour 😂 loved the strategically placed carrot and potato 😂😂😂😂
Thanks Jayne. I appreciate the support.
Great vlog Chris, had a few laughs. Back to real life here now. Holiday over. Vids to make. Take care 😁🙏
Thanks Katelyn. Pleased you had a lovely holiday and the reality of real life always hits with a bump doesn’t it. Signs of a great holiday though.
Brilliant intro Chris 😂... Gr8 video 👍
Thanks Robert. Another one I’m testing out this coming week.
...mundane is real.😏Gary, USA
Yes it is and it's hard to keep people entertained. Hard enough keeping myself entertained all the time. Thanks Gary.
another enjoyable start to a wet and windy day here in Scotland thanks to you (and Colin) Thanks
Thanks Harry.
The winter is a challenge for us all Chris but Spring is almost here and that makes such a difference.
The rain is still here but it’s certainly warming up and the extra light makes a shed load of difference. Clocks change end of the month. Wow, that’s gone quick.
feels like its been a long winter to me Chris not a harsh one from a cold perspective but a wet one which is harder I feel!
Comms check, he should of replied...
Foxtrot Oscar over.. 😂😂😂😂
He’s too polite for that Darren. On camera anyway.
Yes I agree, over.... or whatever it is, I definitely need to get better, or there again , foxtrot indigo tango
Binge watching your videos mate and “mundane” is definitely NOT in the description vocabulary.👍
Good attempt on the crumble but agree with previous comment, lashings of custard or cream.
Nice happy video Chris, set me up for the day… Cheers
Excellent vlog, we both loved it! 😊😊
Thank you Su.
Take care.
Thanks for the tip Alan. As I’m travelling through new territory, that idea will actually work. Stand by…..
Nice one Chris, have a good rest of the week and weekend mate…
Thank you Tony. Hope you are well.
@@chrismears-inslowtime still floating mate…
Always entertaining Chris that's for sure. Chris in Devon.
Thanks Chris. As always I appreciate the support.
Hey Chris, great vid, made me chuckle especially the beginning
Thanks James. I appreciate the support.
Thomas, thanks
Granola. Good idea.
I just don't think we dress up enough. And I like showing that I make an effort to show my respect.
I frequently wear a kilt. The most comfortable thing for walking. @@colincox1whichnet
😂😅😂 Well Done Chris, Enjoy your day. I need to get some food scales for sure. Chow Popa X🐰x
But don’t follow the crumble making. It was crap. Thanks Julie.
Hi Chris, Got scales today £20, Dunelm. Try 4oz SR flour, 2oz marg, 2oz sugar. Rub flour & marg together/add sugar. X🐰x
Chris, If you're having back problems after long periods of standing, you might want to give Skechers "arch fit" shoes a try. A friend of mine suggested them to me, what a revelation. I rarely wear any other footwear now.
🥔🥕🥔😂😂 Thank you.
Pleasure.
.. Needed a bit of custard or cream Chris Cobber - but you can't beat a bit of company at mealtimes to help suck it all up.
I would have added something to it if it tasted ok. I’m please I didn’t waste a tin of custard or ice cream!
However the Gardner drying room….absolutely.
you sunk the duck hehe
I did see a duck later although not sure they were the same ones! Thanks for the support Dougie.
I have watched Carl Pilkington. Funny and I’ll take that as a compliment as that is about right for me. Thanks Lynn.
Lol all said in good humour lol your yoga was so funny
Once the correct VP is in you, you can not do it any other way. It has been 34 years since I left the SA Defence Force and it is stil in me.
I’m sure the true radio geeks would have worked out that was VP for HF comms. But it was good for the vlog content. Thanks Tom.
I would have turned the engine over to bring up the oil pressure before starting.
You seem to be traveling the same canal. Is that on purpose, and do you have plans to see other canals?
Nice veg mate 😂
The veg was my attempt of a nose and eyes. I think some thought it was something else!!!! Maybe.
Mark time .haaaa
As you know, it’s all about movement mate. I hope you’re well.
Oh Gordon Bennet Chris, how could you drown out the sound of the Gardiner with that music???????? Take care.
I haven’t used that expression for a while. Thanks for the reminder Christine. There’s plenty more times to be drowned out by that Gardner.
Nice veg 😂😂
A lot of people have mentioned it this week. Wait for next week. A regular feature until I run out of ideas! Thanks Rebecca.
That Gardner will still be running when your engine is recycled into a sack of nails.
Possibly. But hopefully that'll be someone else's problem. There are plenty of standard marine engines that are still making the propeller turn40 years on. I don't have that amount of time left on the planet.
