      problem is unless this is going on top of a good mask this really won't protect you and possibly not anyone else because it's far FAR too porous. Your best bet is to make a HEPA filter mask from a vacuum cleaner and then either knit something like this over it, or put it around it.

      @@makaisenki There's some crochet version where it creates a pocket in the back to let you put filters or another piece of fabric in it. I'm sure you can do that with knitting too.

    I like the pattern. I made one adjustment by accident that I like which is to continue the first three knitted rows to make the first six rows all knitted, before the expansion rows start. It seemed to make a better fit. In the meantime, I now have an awesome, if somewhat lopsided (because I followed the directions correctly the second time to compare) mask. Much more breathable, and comfortable, so I will actually keep it on.

    After watching the part for the cast on about 20 times, I finally understood how to get the yo and the picked up stitch....when doing the yo, be sure the yarn is between the hair tie and the needle before inserting the needle in the hair tie to pick up the next stitch. Once I practiced this it was much easier.
    My difficulty was the 3 needle bind off. One of the needles would slip and I would have to catch the stitched so not to lose them. Overall, it was an easy pattern once I understood the cast on.

    ok gosh this sounds like a stupid question but wouldn't the virus just go through the little hole made naturally between stitches in the knitting? Would you have to attatch a piece of cloth to the inside of the knitting to make this safer?

    • @stevena.7022
      @stevena.7022 4 роки тому

      This is just for social protection. Though large droplets will still be stopped so it's better than nothing. You could wear an N95 underneath for an actual virus barrier. I've seen patterns with replaceable filter pockets or solid backing, that seems to be the best idea for knit masks

    Using hair ties is ingenious! No need to sew on straps, and patterns that have a crochet chain for straps don't fit well. The only thing I would change is knitting a few ribs when you get to the top of the two pieces. I knitted one rib at the top of the first piece, and two ribs at the top of the second piece so that when you put them together the seam is invisible. I might try baby wool for my next mask because the first one is a little itchy. Or perhaps cotton.

    Thanks for the pattern. Already made two . On my first one I cast on on a shoelace and did kitchener stitch to join both sides. Added a Miele HEPA Vacuum Bag piece as liner. Got a lot of complements. Second one after I was done with the mask I replaced the shoelace with elastic from an old surgical mask because as it turns out some people do like the around ear ties😐 Will try a different liner .

    I loved this pattern! Used, Peaches & Creme cotton yarn, though. Especially liked the way the hair ties were incorporated! BTW: I use a paper three fold, (typically blue and white) mask as a filter. I did make a change, however, because I didn't like the three needle bind-off, creating a center bulky seam. I chose to do the Kitchener stitch as a way to join the two knitted pieces. Wha-la! No center seam! LOVE THIS PATTERN!

    • @TheNightFlower
      @TheNightFlower 4 роки тому +1

      Savannah Johnson If you’d like to try it yourself, try inserting a few brioche ribs (I did 3 pleats) after you’re done increasing and have removed your markers. After the last increase, work one row of knit, then on the wrong side, work a brioche set up row and go from there. So instead of working stockinette stitch, do your garter stitch border and then insert brioches in a 1x1 rib pattern. Do it on both pieces so that you knit the 3 needle bind off to align the brioches in the centre over where your mouth will be. Because the brioche is a puffy stitch, it gives the illusion of the doubling up of fabric in the middle over the nose and mouth. I used a similar shade of blue to real surgical masks with white along the garter stitch border. Same colours as a real mask.
      If you want something simpler, you could try fisherman’s rib which is much less complex and requires no set up row. It looks almost identical. It helped me to plot out my stitches on fine graph paper. Her original pattern made a really great foundation for the mask I ended up with.

    Do you end with a purl row on both sides. If so how you end with the working yarn both at the end when putting right sides together. I had to take one off the needle and turn it around in order to be able to knit. So that made one side upside down. I was able to finish but I see you had your working yarn both on top when you put the right sides together. ??? Or did you finish one row with the knit and the other with the purl.

    • @TheSnugglery
      @TheSnugglery  4 роки тому

      ah you're right, I must have done one extra row on one piece of the face mask (not a big deal). It's okay if both working yarns aren't on the same side when you put the right sides together. You only need one working yarn attached for the bind off.

      Lita Richner There’s a link to print the pattern out to follow along better, which she noted in the video. This is designed to show you, not have you follow along. I can also recommend that you try the pause button to work what she said before moving onto the next step. I have done a lot of knitting through UA-cam videos. Pausing is a great method or just read the pattern. Hope this helps :)

    the making stitched through the hair tie makes absolutely no sense to me. i use the long tail cast on method so this is completely alien to me

    Couldn’t the Kitchener stitch be used to join the halves?

      yeah! someone else mentioned that I and I was kicking myself for not thinking of it 😂 but I'm not much of a sock knitter so it didn't come to mind at the time. With right sides facing, kitchener stitch would likely be more seamless than 3nbo

      i made 5 different types this 1 looks best to me, but daughter said this 1> ua-cam.com/video/hNvef-uirBM/v-deo.html fit best..so i tweeked both ..added hair tie on both edges started w/ 16 stitches which was double until u knit 2 together knit 5 rows then knit, purl, knit 3 first on a purl row and last 3 then on every row knit prl knit 1st and last 3 ..put markers in middle of work w/ 2 inside markers.. every knit row m1r m1l on either side of markers knit or purl row and middle 2 depending the row your on ..increasing on knit row only till 28 stitches using 4 mm needles for female and child / for men start w/ 20 stitches 4.5 mm...knit 4 inches this way then start decrease 3 stitches just b4 1st marker knit 1 slip 1 psso slip marker knit the 2 slip marker knit 2tg knit to last three knit1, purl1 , knit1/ continue till 16 stitches remain or 20 depending on size knit 5 rows bind off then crochet elastic on like this > ua-cam.com/video/EVcErVaxXYo/v-deo.html&feature=share&fbclid=IwAR3qj8L3u3qiCUqD2PKVlezBApyDQSXEeH1pHv26-2Rb6HQgbFigDHdxNw0 very simple you don't have to make 2 pieces ...took me a week to figure it all out ..it's like adding 2 three good recipe together now perfect and easy //any question lemme know

    How do i knit 9 place a marker, knit 2 and repeat, when i only have 20 stitches l, not 22

    • @benbarnes8910
      @benbarnes8910 4 роки тому

      You just repeat the 9 stitches. The knit two is just between the markers. Hope that helps.

      Saylor Northrip K9 place marker K2 (equals 11 stitches so far) place marker K9 more (equals 20 stitches) 👍🏼hope you already figure it out

    Sorry but this knitted facemask will NOT protect you at all....(it will give you a false sense of protection). Its "weave" is far too "open" to keep anything out, that you are trying to protect yourself against. And remember you will have to wash, at a high temperature, it each time you have worn it outside. Not a good thing for the cotton/wool. ✌🏻
