    FiregroundImages, Superb video footage of this tragic incident. I hope the fire fighter taken to the hospital with cardiac issues is OK and recovering. As for the 4th house that caught fire across the street I believe there were two flights of stairs just to reach the front door of that home. By the time that house caught fire all resources were already committed to fighting the fires in the three homes burning across the street. I noticed a unused tower ladder on scene but it probably couldn't get in position due to the multiple hose lines laid out all over the street. If you add wind and water supply problems into the equation it's amazing the entire block didn't catch fire. Waterbury's bravest did the best they could with the resources available at the time of this incident..

      Tommy D As I was on scene of this incident, I couldn't agree with you more. It was a really difficult situation for the Department. They are a very busy and professional department that prove their high level of competence regularly with the work that they see in that city. And THANK YOU for your complement on my video.

      Yeah, I hear that, but I kept wanting to shout "Fire thru the roof behind you!" although I was sure they knew. The ones that do a good job are the ones you find yourself rooting for and these guys did the work.

    @Eddiecurrent2000 We were aware of the house across the street pretty much immediately after it caught. Resources were diverted to that house as well as the other 3. To kithers comment, the house across the street had very quick heavy fire involvement in the attic and roof area, resources were diverted to try and save the house but the fire quickly comprised the roof. Crews did a great job holding it to those houses. With the rate of fire spread from wind and topography, more houses could have easily been involved.

      I take it burning material from the involved houses made the one across the road catch? I also assume these kinds of videos are helpful after the fact for training purposes?

      If you had stopped efforts on the houses that were burning initially, the fire might have spread to more houses, am I right? Important to contain the bigger fire to protect other structures?

    This incident was a major error on the part of command. I served 29 years in a major city fire department. So I know what I'm talking about.
    The building on the left was totally evolved in fire. it was a loss from the start. In such cases it's the duty of command to protect adjacent structures. This was not done. the structure on the right had minimal fire involvement that could have been brought under control easily if action was taken early. Command was totally focused on the building that was fully engulfed in fire and a total loss early in the engagement. Command gets a F from me.

    Every time I see one of these videos of high roof fires, I notice fire fighters on the ground spraying upwards, often with the streams clearing the burning building. The tower truck seemed more effective. Maybe someone who knows a lot more about fire fighting strategies can tell me, why even bother attacking fires on high roofs from the ground if there isn't a good angle to hit the fire directly? And, are more tower trucks the answer?? In any event, hats off to this fire department for their professionalism and bravery.

      Those three houses weren't "already destroyed"; only the top floor was burnt. The losses were extreme here because "surround and drown" is the only tactic these guys apparently know. Shooting water in giant arcs, or, as I call it, "watering the back yard from the street".

    • @33lex55
      @33lex55 6 років тому +2

      If 'only the top floor was burnt': bear in mind, that these are all wooden structures; if the top is gone, the rest will follow very soon, and the structure is not safe anymore. Wooden structures should not be allowed in an urban setting, and certainly NOT with multiple levels. Did you not notice how fast the fire burned in that fourth building?

    • @watchthe1369
      @watchthe1369 4 роки тому

      Triage of structures is a far more western mindset due to the wildfires. Some times all that can be done is surround and drown, (Containment, Defensive Tactics)but a single engine company held back for spotting and extension from the embers and firebrands might be a good concept in the future.

    Don't know all the facts about this department, resources, manpower etc......... but looks like there needed to be 3 or 4 ladder trucks/aerials deployed to attack from above...... looks like a stubborn situation......... they hopefully did the best they could.

      Common Sense
      The facts are if they had access to aerial trucks and manpower they would be there.

    The FD should use drones like this one. Then they might have been able to direct the fools with the laserbeams. If I observed ONE thing with deckguns and powerliners, it is that these guys always set it to a laserbeam, and overshoot the actual fire. It may be nice to play Darth Vader, but NOT in the FD. I just wonder why FD's invest so much money in these things.

    Can you see live what the drone camera shoots? If so, can I assume you reported the exposure structure fire across the street? Were other departments called in to assist? This was excellent footage of a sad situation. I hope fire departments all around use this video for training. And I hope Waterbury used it in an extensive post-mortem.

      I actually can see what the camera shoots on a small phone display screen. But if you look closely, there was no need for reporting the exposure because they were already well aware (you can see hose lines stretched up the front stairs). Waterbury is a very serious city fire department with experience many other departments will never see. And yes, other departments were called in to assist.

    The incident commander should have been executed as soon as the fire was eventually brought under control. Pathetic attempt at fire suppression.

    Yet another example of fire tearing through buildings constructed with cheap, flammable materials and no firewalls to prevent spread. when are the authorities (mostly civic?) going to toughen up the building codes? Or are they all in the hip pockets of the builders/developers? It's more than just a sad situation - in my opinion it's literally criminal.

    Too little, too late. Overmatched and incompetent. Another bright star for Amerika's third-rate fire services.
