You are a godsend! About a year ago I bought a stage piano that has this Rhodes sound in it. Ever since I discovered it, I became hooked to the sound and my play style started developing more towards jazz and soul. I finally got hooked to the 7 chords, and started figuring out songs with more complex harmonies. I'm glad I discovered your channel, to help and guide me on this journey in my musical development.
@@teflo2 If you have different EP sounds, I have a hunch that the quality of yours might be better than mine. I have only one EP sound which is named 'Rhodes EP.' The piano is the Midiplus Stage 88, which is a very cheap stage piano and midi keyboard with specs that are acceptable. For the price range however, it's probably one of the best you can get if you're on a very tight budget. It's around 300 bucks and still a big step up from the keyboard that I used to play. The quality of the rhodes sound is good, but the feel of the dynamics is very limited, due to the relative cheap quality of the piano. It still got me hooked on the sound tho :-) If you can afford better, I would suggest something like the Korg SV 2, which looks, feels and sounds amazing. It has several rhodes or EP sounds and a good response. If I could afford it, I would definitely buy it in a heartbeat. Then again, If I could afford real Rhodes, I would go for that.
omg it's so simple thank you for explaining. Thinking about 9,11, and 13s get so confusing for me but it's so much easier now to think in terms of 2s and 6s
Every lesson you IMPRESS me more and more...Great TEACHER and full of knowledge you share and easily smoothly PERFORM. You got it ALL. God bless you Johnny for all you give to everyone...
I've been following your channel for quite a while now and this is definitely been my favorite lesson, please do more Neo Soul and NuJazz chord progressions videos. Thanks Much!
Very helpful video, thanks. It reminds me of a harmony exercise (Philips exercise maybe..) where you move notes in contrary motion and fill in chord notes in between, or you can just move the bottom note chromatically and fill in chord notes.
Wow, that's cool. I've been looking for something like this for long. Need to practice it soon on my keyboard. Thanks so much and kind regards from Munich (Germany), Thomas
Great lesson. I have been aware about the pivot note concept, but it never occurred to me to apply it to neo soul. Thanks for that. Btw, a grand piano sound isn't really uncommon in neo-soul. I rather hardly hear wurlitzers in recordings.
I love this sound. With so many non-diatonic chords, how do you view this being in the key of F? AbMaj13, and DbMaj13, and EbMaj13, and GbMaj13, and Cmin11, do you consider these spicey passing chords that are being showcased?
@@dyls6052 You think solely of the melody and then you get a little bit more creative about what could fit below it. Let's say you only have the melody notes e and f#. Something easy and solid below these notes would be C major and D major. But let's say the second note is the root note of the chord and you play it in 1st inversion, then you have C major and F#/A#. If you play around with that idea which builds from top to bottom, you will have access to a totally different set of musical language, I promise.
The nminor chord extra notes are the equivalent of the 80s something over something ambiguous 7th like an Eb over an F for instance..Instant Alexander O’Neil.
Anyone know why he’s making the 4 chord a dominant 7 and the 5 chord a minor 7?? I would think the the 4 chord would be a major 7 and the 5 chord a dominant 7.
Hey, The 4th chord is major it's a Bb Maj 13 so i dont see any problems here. And for the 5 it's just an alteration on the dominant, where you can play a minor or a #9#5 or any other strange chords instead
I understand the value in showing the music theory part, but neo is not a formula, the main thing that should be taught is the feeling as it starts there, cadence, timing, timber plus more have profound effect on the "neo-soul" sound and the feeling is what keeps its sounding real and not like just like a static peice of music. Its important to encourage that along side whatever theory is taught.
Be selective with your notes. You can drop the root note or the fifth from a chord and retain the flavor. This is especially true if you're playing with other musicians who have those notes covered.
If the object is to produce a "muddy" sound... then you've succeeded. Couldn't one achieve the same "muddy" sound by just playing any adjacent notes within the cord?
Theorically, 9 and 13 are "consonant" extensions of the major chord, and 9 and 11 for minor chords sound "idiomatic" of the genre, very characteristic. But of course you can choose whatever note you see fit - I mean, "hear fit"
@@danielvega71 Ok, but adding the 2 and the 6th (maj) or the 2 and the 4th (min).....is not the same. Adding the 9th and/or 13 to a maj. 7th is not the same as adding the 2 and/or 6h to the maj. 7th. Adding the 9th to a maj,7th has a clean, pleasant sound, unlike the muddy sound one produces by adding the 2nd to the maj. 7th. The same can be said for adding the 13th to the maj. 7th as opposed to adding the 6th to the maj. 7th. Same for the min. 7th. and the addition of the 2 and/or 4th. Playing adjacent notes produces dissonance and results in a displeasing, muddy sound.

Amazing chords, and great voicings. I could just listen to it all night, but I better start practice playing 'm :D
Thanks Jonny, I was wondering what the deal was with neo soul.

Ab as secondary dominant for Db and Db as a sub for Gm maybe?
where can I buy the into song?
what do you mean by a dominant chord at 6:33?
Amusing how you say "spread these notes out" and then still add notes... A bit of a leap for any beginner. But this is amazing
Where would be the first places for a beginner pianist to learn the foundations of this style with the hopes of eventually getting to this sound?
Do you have neo soul explanations in your piano package?
👌

Thanks Jonny

are you treating F as the 1 here? If so shouldnt the C be a dominant chord?

1 or 2 of these chords are unplayable for me with small hands , and i realy wanna learn to play neo soul

7ths? don’t you mean 9th, 13th, sus9’s? Come bro, gotta get gritty with it.
