Hi Johnny I've been learning from you for some time now but this particular lesson has made me send you a thank you comment so much information in under 15min genius thank you from teddy boy
What a great lesson Jonny, gospel is my all time favourite genre to play, those monster chords are just so cool. More and more and more gospel lessons plz. Huge thank you for you! Tom from Ireland.
I'm a guitar player seeking instruction on theory and harmony. Been playing professionally 35 years, always trying to learn something I can apply to my bag of tricks. I have watched a few of your videos and as much as possible applied it to guitar, which presents some wonderful challenges to my chord and voicing chops as well as spurred my imagination and creativity to new places. Great information, well articulated and immediately useful. Great teaching brother! Thank you.
Wow, such a great and efficiently packed lesson. I love how you take it step-by-step in levels, so not only does it increase with difficulty but also we can see the logic of how ideas are built upon the previous ones and learn from that. Love those crunchy chords! Thanks Jonny
Thks Johnny. This is nice straight forward and clear as daylight. It makes me understand more about Gospel, jazz & blues more. I Can't wait to try it out.
What’s your usual thought process for how you tend to voice your piano chords? Is there any particular reason you sequence the notes in a particular way? Thanks :)
I - vi - IV - V Passing chords I - III - vi - I IV - V I - V Add 7ths Spread out the chord Add the slip 2 Slip off the 2nd note in the chord. Use the "slip note" on every 2nd chord. Add the Money Notes E13(b9) C9 G9(sus4) Put It All Together Bonus chord G7(b13, #9) To improvise over the progression, you can use the major blues scale. C-D-D#-E-G-A (can use it over all the chords). Scale spelling: I - ii - ii# - iii - V - vi.
I was confused when you went from the basic progression to the passing chords. The basic is I vi IV V. Once you start inserting the 5 passing chords to the original progression, wouldn't it go to I III7 vi I IV II V before the cycle repeats?
Type in Chord extensions and alterations on Google. They happen a lot on guitar too. You might see something like D7b5, in this case you make a D7 chord n lower the fifth by a half step. It alters the D7 chord somehow, in this I think it's important to let the ear lead and theory follow. Here He's doing the same, alterations are more about what sounds good and voice leading imo. If you think of which note goes to where it's easier to get why alterations work But that's just for me. 🤷🏾♂️👌🏾 Good luck

This video has made me want to put my guitar away for a while and get back to tickling some keys! Thanks!
Is there a rule for when you use a major 7th and when you use a dominant 7?
In this video it's following the key signature.
Hi, Johny in step three when your spread notes how do know where to put them or spread them?
How do you know whether to play a dominant 7 or a major 7?
Hi Johnny, do you have any tips to improvise the Hymn left hand?
Cool and crunchy? Thoughts here
I was confused when you went from the basic progression to the passing chords.

I also want to know this
Great video. Thank you. Lots of Stevie Wonder's 'Knocks me off my feet' chords on there. If you dont know it, check it out.
Going to the 5 chord from C is really the fourth in C. That’s confusing to me.
You can read about it more in-depth here: pianowithjonny.com/piano-lessons/play-gospel-piano-the-6-step-beginner-guide/
Niko Lelasi calls out numbers to his Gospel band while they are playing.
Why no passing chord F to G.
Good stuff Jonny, as always, but C9---crunchy? Meh.
Nina Simone j wish j knew🎉😂❤
5:39 may be; C^7 ?😂❤
Why is everything ‘amazing’? If everything is, at he end of the day nothing is. If everything is special, nothing is because nothing stands out.
Sorry. This sounds like MAYBE 'piano bar jazz gospel' if there is a such thing. Or something CHICAGO would have recorded back in the 70's. J/s
Is Jonny a Christian?
You lost me at the money notes
