All the people who are trying it in 2019, you could simply import the file, select it and go to effects>Vocal reduction and isolation>drop down>remove vocals
For those people who are using newer version of audacity:- 1)Split stereo track to mono. 2)Apply "Invert" to the bottom track. 3)As your track is already in mono, you can simply go to "Tracks" menu and select "Mix and Render" that way you will get the same result.

maybe if you click the "split stereo to mono" option, then do all of the steps he said, it'll work? it hasn't worked for me yet, but maybe it will for you?
+Fletchers Flesh Why are you calling me a bitch? you dont even know me. I didnt ask for your help. I ask for people who are willing for help. so if you think that you are not going to help me. rather just no respond to my comment instead of insulting me. may God forgive you.
If you're having problem about having no, "make audio to mono" option. Before splitting the track, it has a, "Split track to mono" option. You're welcome.
This all depends on how the song was mixed down, how heavily saturated with effects the vocals are. If there's a lot of reverb it will leave the tails behind. If your vocals are over compressed it won't completely remove them as it only removes the center channel along with drum kicks etc you CAN NOT completely remove vocals from every song.
As others have commented the options have changed slightly in newer versions of audacity. I don't fully understand the principles behind these edits, but i believe I have duplicated the effect in this video by choosing Split stereo track to mono, in place of split stereo track. Once the tracks are split and mono, inverting the bottom track created a similar effect to the one displayed here in the video. As others have said, in different music (hip hop for example) the additional distortion was far beyond my ability to fix or compensate for.
Is there anyway to reveal the layers of a song separately? Like if I wanted to break down a song and just play the drums , then layer in the bass, then the harmony which all makes it all one song .
Mike Russell can I send you an example of what I mean ? There is a mixer that remixes Michael Jackson songs and I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have the original demos and songs unless they’ve been released to the public as bonus material. I am a MJ UA-camr and would love to break down his songs . But here is an example:
2019 version of aducity no longer has the just mono button it only has the split track into mono and it does not work to remove voices from the tracks. only changes the track from stereo tone to mono tone with voices

@@MikeRussell Thanks Mike, however I watched your other video that provided an easier way by using Audio Reduction and Isolation, it worked, Thanks a lot!
Tomas Corvidea make sure you don't re-stereo the tracks. Keep both mono, unless it just so happens that you happened to be working on a pseudo-stereo track, which essentially means that it's two mono tracks made into a stereo track with minor changes to one of the channels. A pseudo-stereo track will not work using this method.
i made the high cut on remove vocals higher than the frequency of the vocals. just test around and you will find the correct frequency to have the hi hat because hi hat frequency is higher than that of the human voice
For those who don't see the "mono" option, simply drag the slider under the "Mute" and "Solo" buttons that has the "L" and the "R" on your track to the center.

Thank you very much for the great tutorial on using this app. I try to remove the vocal of a song but up to the step at 2 min 6 sec in your video, there is no button to choose mono. Apparently I was stuck there and cannot proceed further as there is no cancellation of the vocal part of the song. The song is one the songs I like the most which is "You raise me up" by Westlife. I appreciate it if anyone can help me solve this problem. Thank you so much.
You're welcome, I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful. In your version of Audacity, the "Split Stereo Track" option may be called "Make Stereo Track Mono" instead.
Hi, I cannot make them mono cause there is no option in my downloaded version (2.2.1). May I know what was the version that you used in this video? Thank you
I think you answered the question i was going to ask. I have a few R&B artists songs that I can't find on youtube in a karaoke version but I wanted to cancel out the original artists vocal but leave the background that's already there. You mentioned that some background vocals may still be there? correct?
This effect works based on canceling out vocals that are in the center of the track. It splits the stereo track and inverts the phase of one side, then makes it mono to cancel out everything in the center. If the vocals has any effects on it, such as reverb, it won't be possible to remove them. Also backup vocals can't be removed since they are typically panned left or right.

Hello all, At minute 4: 47, I don’t have the option Mono on my audacity version. Would it be that I have to upgrade to another version of audacity? Thank you
Need some help! I figured out to do this in the new audacity version, and MOST of the vocals are gone, but some are still there and the audio sounds scratchy and distant... How would I fix this?
