Well, as someone who learnt to edit audio with chinagraphs and razor blades this is a brilliant run through of how to use Audacity. I was utterly baffled trying to go through the manual on my own, and you have made it come alive and appear so simple. Thank you, and I leave with a flourish to go to the editing machine!
Fantastic tutorial! As someone who is not very "techy" and felt somewhat intimidated by using Audacity - you distilled the information to make it very easy to follow. Great delivery as well, i.e., easy to follow, engaging and informative. Thank you!
Audacity demystified in minutes. Excellent and appreciated. I'm baby-steps into content creation prioritizing the audio part (recorder/Mixpre, microphones et al) i.e. topics like working with time-sync'ed audio/video sequences, how to export audio and use with the recorded video sequences (ProRes) are not something I have seen much about in any hands-on video. Just a suggestion .. 🙂
Dude this was *quite* helpful, plus you got to each of the points quickly, in a way I could follow easily, and explained things clearly. Subbed. I'll check out your other stuff. Thank you :)

Can't thank you enough Mike, this video is all I needed to take the plunge. Simple and meaningful start to what has become a critical tool (Audacity) in the start of our Podcast. I watched a few videos in your series (starting with this one in particular) and they have been invaluable!

THANKS! I just got off my butt and bought a new computer as well as an upgrade to my older computer. I plan on a joint podcast with a friend, and I just downloaded Audacity, installed it and the first thing I did was come find this channel. I LOVED IT! I liked and subscribed, so I'll be following. As I embark on this adventure I know I'll be needing the help!
That's fantastic to hear! I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful and that you're diving into podcasting with your friend - it's going to be an exciting journey!
This was PHENOMENAL. One small request (and maybe since this is two years old, you're already doing it), but could you make your cursor larger or as a laser pen? While your descriptions of what to click on were great, I had a hard time finding your cursor to know where on the screen/what icons to click on.
Thank you for the feedback! I'll definitely make sure to increase the size of my cursor or utilize a laser pen in future tutorials to make it easier for viewers to follow along visually.
@@MikeRussell I'd love to see this, too. I agree that this is an excellent tutorial. I know nothing about audio, but this tutorial was helpful. Thank you. :) The video is the first I've watched about Audacity. I've seen this software mentioned a lot, and I plan to use it. I'll check out your course.

I recorded for a few seconds. How do I start recording again at the beginning or in the middle, to replace a part? Every time I press record, it only starts recording at the end of where I've already recorded. I'm used to using GarageBand, and it was easy with that. I have to use Audacity now because a voiceover client needs higher resolution.
Thanks Millions, Mike! Full beginner working on a project to my wife. Any tips to enhance the quality of the audio from an old k7? That's she interviewing her grandpa when she was 12 and 1 year before he passed. Appreciated!!
The tutorial is very good. Feedback for improvements: Please say the values in the compressor since the image is blurry. For example, I cannot see the Attack Time nor Release Time. It looks like it says 8...... and 5..... Not sure. What are the values? Thank you.
Thank you for your feedback! I will make sure to verbally mention the values for the compressor settings in future tutorials to assist viewers with blurry images.
Hello Mike, just watched your Audacity Tutorial For Beginners and found it very informative. I've use Audacity mainly for recording DJ mixes, my livestreaming shows and audio file conversions. Just VERY basic use but I really would like to know about editing my mixes and correcting mistakes. Do you have a video specific to this subject?
Thank you for an excellent introduction. I already feel far more confident. I note, however, that on my instalation I do not appear to have all the tools and effects that you appear to have on yours (I din't see the envelope tool you uses and under effects only have about twelve as opposed to the huge lot of them in your audacity . Are these addidional, non built-in tools and effects that you installed extra? And if so, is this addressed in adifferent module? In which case would you, please point me towards the module(s) dealing with this aspect) thanks
Hi Mike, just downloaded your presets for audacity and they are amazing, thank you so much. I am recording on an ASUS Vivibook with a BOYA M1-PRO lav, for some reason I get clicking sounds during the audio recording (not mouth clicks). Clicks that will pop up during the recording whether I record in Audacity, Hindenberg or Audition. It can't be removed with any of the de-clicker plugins and very hard to remove at the end of every word or mid word. Any idea what I could do differently? Thank you 🙏

Normalise is very different to compression. Normalise just sets the peak of the audio to be the target level but does not alter the dynamic range of the audio
I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful! To transfer sound from old cassettes to Audacity, you can use a cassette player connected to your computer via a line-in audio cable or a USB audio interface to digitize the audio.

@@MikeRussell I bought a Behringer U-Control UCA222 USB Audio Interface to record my dj mixes using Serato Dj. I had the hardest time getting it to work. so what I did is i was running Serato on my MacBook Pro 2022 M2 chip to play the music and a 2012 MacBook Pro to record with Audacity. now, I cannot add another track and record.
‼UPDATE FOR AUDACITY USERS ‼- I have made it easier than ever before to work with tricky audio. My brand new Audacity presets are out now. One click to GREAT sound :) Check them out here: mrc.fm/presets This is a great way for you to support my channel too 🙏🙏🙏
Amazing video✨️✨️👏👏 I have a question please, how I can use internal and external microphones to record at the same time on audacity? I record lessons for my students using PowerPoint and I open inserted videos in powerpoint during explanation, unfortunately the sound of all showed videos during recording were not recorded on audacity and only my voice which coming from external microphone was recorded, it was really impossible to shift many times to the internal mic while recording lectures, I wanna upload recorded lectures to the UA-cam, please advice😓Many thanks.
@Mike Russell Thank you so much for replying. Unfortunately, all screenrecording allows you record both internal and external sound, but these programs or apps have no options to allow you to adjust audio or microphone sensitivity or gain...etc before recording, and that's my problem as I need to adjust audio before recording.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm thrilled to hear that my Audacity tutorial helped you as a beginner. Keep exploring and creating awesome audio! 😊
Very enlightening. I wonder if you could answer the following question: If I record a tune I composed, is it possible to hear it not me singing but performed by some musical instrument ? Electronic sound or any computer sound ? Thanks for your uploads.
What a great tutorial! I've been using other software and websites, but your tutorial has been great and so easy to use. I do have a question...on my end, I have no sound when I attempt to record. I hear sound when I open a saved recording. Don't know what the problem may be. BTW, I use a Chromebook. Any ideas/suggestions?
This tutorial was great for getting started with video making! One point of note- the shift +spacebar to loop doesn't work! I had to manually drag the looping bars to get the effect I wanted.
Thanks for your feedback! I'm glad the tutorial was helpful for getting started with video production. The shortcut I mentioned may not work in all audio editing software so I appreciate you pointing that out.
Great tutorial. Unfortunately I have an odd need and I'm hoping you might take a minute to advise. I moved to an apartment on retiring and a bad neighbor is making life hell with noise. Im trying to set up Audacity tp record it with my laptop for evidence. Although it keeps me awake all night I'm not able to capture much. Id be interested in the minimum equipment I need to have ( currently just windows laptop and a Samson microphone. Also, leaving it on all night I then want to jump to the really loud bits and focus on those, but I can manage to to hat. Any advice would be great. Thanks
I understand your situation and the importance of having evidence, but I cannot recommend ways to secretly record your neighbor, as that may violate privacy laws.
Hi Mike, thanks for this insightful tutorial. Is there any way that we can enhance our voice recording (bass/ treble etc.) ? Can you teach us how to use the variety of effects?
Hi Mike I'm trying out Audacity with my Rodecaster Pro 2 that I setup in a room just to do some productions but after setting it up I keep getting a echo when I'm talking , even when I change the settings that are available in the Preferences I keep getting the echo. I'm using a Windows PC and latest Audacity. I really like to give this program a shot, it looks pretty cool and I like to get your settings that you offer if I'm able to get this working. Could you do a video please, I wasn't able to find anyone on youtube with a video with help on this. Thank you so much .. Fan of your work!
Hey there, that's a great tutorial for beginners like me. But i want to know that if i want to edit my voiceovers using audacity (for my youtube videos) do i need to give any kind of attribution to audacity as i have used the software for editing my audio. Or if i do not give any attribution in the description its fine?
Hey, I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful! When using Audacity to edit your voiceovers for UA-cam videos, you generally don't need to give attribution in the video description, as Audacity is free software and does not require attribution for usage.
Ok I’m having some issues with this, when it comes to recording on stereo the location to choose that option is not on the location you’re displaying but it’s above on the pull down menu where you choose tracks. However when I choose tracks and select stereo I do get the dual tracks BUT! When I hit record, the single mono track still pops up underneath the dual tracks and records there thus robbing me of what I need in stereo. How do I correct this?
I have a well recorded cassette some original songs from years back and I want to split or 'solo' acoustic guitar' lead vocal and drums to slightly tweak them. They are transferred onto a USB stick and now in my DAW. DO you know if Audacity can do this? Thanks Mike smashing channel btw!
I've dragged an MP3 file into the workspace, but I can't hear it. My computer audio works otherwise (I just watched your excellent video without problem). I can hear anything else except the music I put into audacity, any ideas? Thanks for a great video
It sounds like the MP3 file might be silent upon import, check if the track is muted in Audacity or adjust the volume levels - glad you enjoyed the tutorial!
Monday, January 23, 2023 Mike, I made a recording with me reading a script, but Audacity only recorded on the top track, which only plays back on my left headphone. How do I copy the top track to the bottom? It seems like this should be easy to sort out, but nothing I tried has worked so far. This is really frustrating! Audacity is supposed to be easy to use. Thank you much, Anthony.
Any chance of using Audacity to create or import files for ACX and get it to meet the ACX Check-in tool with the Audacity plug-ins? How to problem solve each issue that might occur of RMS, Peak, and Noise floor to pass.
That’s down to your audio input. You need to ensure both left and right and recording the same input from your interface which is outputting a mono signal.
Hi, love your tutorial. Thanks. But, my voice is usually quite easy for people to hear but Audacity records it as too quiet. Settings seem to be ok but I'm also just beginning. Can you help? I'm using the Q2U mic.
I don't have that particular zoom button, and I see you don't have it either in a video from years ago. Is it that I have an older version of audacity?
This was the latest version available at the time of recording. It may be that you now have a newer version than this version used in January or that you indeed have an older version
Hi, thank you for this, I'm slowly getting my head round this! For someone reason, I don't have the 'project' function bar at the bottom? Any ideas why not? thyank you!
Hi there, I'm glad you're finding the tutorial helpful! The 'project' function bar may not be visible if your Audacity window is not maximized or if it is hidden under other toolbars - try checking your layout settings or resetting the workspace to see if that helps.
Thank you for your question! I cover how to split your audio file into separate tracks, so you can easily organize your converted cassette recordings. Please let me know if you have any other questions!
Mike, what is the difference between “1 (mono) recording channel” and “2 (stereo) recording channels” on Audacity because when I recorded out of “2 (stereo) recording channels)” when I emailed my self a demo recording I could only hear out from one of my air pod but when I emailed myself another demo recording but with the “1 (mono) recording channel” I could hear out from both AirPods just fine!!! Could you please explain!?
1 mono channel spans both left and right with the same audio on both channels, 2 stereo spans both left and right with the left channel audio on the left and right channel audio on the right.
Totally depends on your audio set up as I'd recommend recording the host and guest on separate tracks. Maybe post your audio set up in our community where you can share photos and screenshots community.musicradiocreative.com/
Mike i think I finally figured out my problem and please correct me if I’m wrong so if I’m doing a 2 person (face to face podcast) and I want my listeners to hear on both sides of their headphones I first put “2 (stereo) recording channels” since it makes editing easy and once I put that option I click on audio track and choose click “split stereo to mono” and from there me and the guest along with the Listeners can ear from both ends of the headphones.
Is the focusrite USB audio interface strictly necessary? I'm currently using a Blue Yeti mic with USB connection that goes straight into my laptop, with the unfortunate side effect of not allowing audio playback without disconnecting it.
Brother, I hope you read all my comments I tried to start creating content with voiceover, and I bought a Boya M1 microphone and tried recording and editing audio with Audacity, but I did not reach the desired result that I see with other UA-camrs. I also applied many explanations on UA-cam, but with no result. My question is, can I really achieve what I want to achieve with Boya M1 and Audacity, or should I give up and accept the fait accompli? Thank you
Absolutely, with the right techniques and adjustments, you can definitely achieve the desired results with the Boya M1 microphone and Audacity - don't give up, it's all about learning and refining your skills! I'm here to help you out!
The reason for having duplicate lines of the same WAV files in Audacity is most likely due to how Audacity handles multicomponent audio files. Multicomponent audio files, or multitrack audio files, contain multiple separate audio tracks, each having its own waveform displayed separately. In Audacity, each track will have its own vertical red line. This differentiation allows for more precise control of individual audio components within a multicomponent audio file.
With multiple tracks within a project is it possible to have one track continuously looping without looping the second track concurrently? An example would be a looping ambient drone on one track to be looped and music on a separate track not to be looped.
@@MikeRussell sorry for replying late. I am preacher of the gospel and my goal is to have a good recording sound at least for indoors and outdoor programs
ok. So I have a microphone plugged in to my laptop. but whenever i hot record, it only records audio from the built in microphone on my laptop, and not the one i have plugged in. How do i change this? edit: the button at 1:34 doesn't appear for me, so i can't 'choose' my audio device
Try going to the "Edit" menu in Audacity, then select "Preferences," navigate to the "Devices" tab, and under "Recording," choose your external microphone from the dropdown menu for the "Recording Device" option.
@@MikeRussell also when i right-click it keeps zooming out, but i don't know how to get it to zoom back in again. when i first started messing with it, right clicking would bring up a pop-up menu, but now it zooms it out. and i can't zoom in again. super frusterating.
I swear every time I download an app and come to youtube for a tutorial, y'all be having options and buttons that don't be on my app. I'm stuck at the beginning of the video, because I don't have a "Project Rate" options at the bottom of my screen nor in any of the dropdowns. I just downloaded this app and the latest version, it makes it harder to follow along with your video, when have something different!
Different software versions can sometimes have varying features and layouts, but I'm happy to provide additional guidance to help you get set up and follow along with the tutorial. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!
This has been helpful but I don't have nearly as many menu options. I am paying for the full version and I have downloaded additional effects. I'm using Windows and have no Auto Duck. Where can I find it?
Update: I figured that out - I had to use "Add Realtime Effects" and now Auto Duck appears on my Volume and Compression menu. New problem is that I can't get it to work...back to Google.
@@MikeRussell Thanks Mike, very grateful for your help but I didn't explain properly. I have a sound track with some bumps and glitches in it. I know how to zoom in to the relevant area but as I soon in more and more it eventually goes off centre and off screen. Can I drag the whole caboodle sideways somehow? And when I zoom in enough to get individual samples, I can't drag them or edit them. I realise I am missing something very obvious, but ...
Hi! I use audicity on my Macbook pro. But it is in swedish and I woould like to change the language. All tutorials say go to preferences, but since I use a mac and it is in swedish it is completely different. Do you know how to do it?
I have watched three tutorials on Audacity now and I find the platform nearly impossible. How do I slice my audio clips so that I can record a number of takes and choose just the pieces I want to make a whole song? I see no razor tool or anything of the kind. And how on earth do I get the scrubber to stay in place when I stop it? It jumps to hell and gone every time I stop and I can't figure out how to control it. How come the little hand grabber shows up some times and sometimes not and why does the envelope tool not work half the time? This program is the WORST.
Can I record my singing in audacity using Yamaha mixer where I connect my microphone and track and sing using earphones (phones out )and record in my laptop which is connected to the mixer with 2.0 USB chord. Please explain. Thanks
Absolutely, you can use Audacity to record your singing with a Yamaha mixer by connecting your microphone to the mixer, monitoring through your headphones, and then routing the mixer's output to your laptop via a USB connection to capture the audio in Audacity.
Can you cover overdubbing? I tried overdubbing on an older Mac and there was a lag time with the overdubs that made everything almost a full second late. I tried overdubbing on a newer Mac, and I had the exact same problem. Is this what they mean by "latency"? What am I doing wrong? I'd appreciate any help and patience anyone can offer about this. I'm not only a newbie to Audacity, but I have a terrible trait of getting easily frustrated and not knowing what to do.
Thanks for your question about overdubbing in Audacity. Latency can definitely be a frustrating issue, but there are a few things you can try to minimize it, such as adjusting your audio interface settings, using a smaller buffer size, or even upgrading to a more powerful computer.

One click to GREAT sound :) Check them out here: mrc.fm/presets This is a great way for you to support my channel too 🙏🙏🙏
you might want to be truthful as your presets are not free. just saying.
Amazing video✨️✨️👏👏
I have a question please, how I can use internal and external microphones to record at the same time on audacity? I record lessons for my students using PowerPoint and I open inserted videos in powerpoint during explanation, unfortunately the sound of all showed videos during recording were not recorded on audacity and only my voice which coming from external microphone was recorded, it was really impossible to shift many times to the internal mic while recording lectures, I wanna upload recorded lectures to the UA-cam, please advice😓Many thanks.
You'd be best achieving this using external software to create a virtual input you could feed to Audacity
Hello Mike thx for this amazing tutorial, perfect for new beginners like me 😊
Thank you so much for your kind words!
It’s best to record the elements individually if you can so you can make whatever mix you want.
@@MikeRussell Thanks
👍
Lovely Mike, will be looking at your other videos.❤
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial, and I hope you find my other videos helpful as well.
All of the videos on this channel are suited for either PC or Mac.
@@MikeRussell guess explains a lot. Thanks for all you do.
Check out my vidoes on making your voice sound better
Hi Mike I'm trying out Audacity with my Rodecaster Pro 2 that I setup in a room just to do some productions but after setting it up I keep getting a echo when I'm talking , even when I change the settings that are available in the Preferences I keep getting the echo.
I'm using a Windows PC and latest Audacity. I really like to give this program a shot, it looks pretty cool and I like to get your settings that you offer if I'm able to get this working. Could you do a video please, I wasn't able to find anyone on youtube with a video with help on this. Thank you so much .. Fan of your work!
Make sure you have your inputs selected correctly otherwise you’ll get the scenario you describe as you’ll be monitoring twice.
When using Audacity to edit your voiceovers for UA-cam videos, you generally don't need to give attribution in the video description, as Audacity is free software and does not require attribution for usage.
thank you so much..I've heard what I wanted to hear..
Great news
Is Auto duck available in the latest version ? Can't seem to find it :( Great video though! :)
I just found it :) I have the Dutch version, it's called 'Automatisch dempen' ! Audacity is nice!
Thank you for watching! Auto duck feature is not available in Audacity, but there are other ways to achieve similar results using existing tools.
This interface looks different than the 3.2 version. Is ther a tutorial for that?
Thank you for this awesome video!!! About to launch my youtube channel for guiding yoga nidra... youve really helped me along the way ☺
Good luck with your channel 👍
I have a well recorded cassette some original songs from years back and I want to split or 'solo' acoustic guitar' lead vocal and drums to slightly tweak them. They are transferred onto a USB stick and now in my DAW. DO you know if Audacity can do this? Thanks Mike smashing channel btw!
Check out the videos on vocal removing on the channel
Thank you for the hard work! Good video I learned alot.
🙏
OMG Dude. This was exactly what i needed, thanks!!
👊
Thank you. This is excellent.
You're welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful.
All I wanted was to record a kids book for my daughter's Yoto and now I'm here 😂 thanks for this 👍
I'm so glad you found this tutorial helpful on your audio journey - creating memories for your daughter's Yoto sounds like a wonderful project!
Thanks again, hey where can I see how to use reverb and bass on my voice?? I love very present breathy bassy intimate sound on my voice..
Check out my other Audacity videos. I have tons of them!
This was an amazing tutorial thank you so much!!!
You're very welcome! I'm thrilled to hear that you found the tutorial amazing and helpful.
anyone else not see the four tabs at the top? i downloaded latest version just now on macbook pro and have no tabs at all at the top
This was helpful thank you. I have a no sound issue. I can not hear what I downloaded nor the music download either??? Help please.
Probably worth dropping a post in our community community.musicradiocreative.com/
Excellent tutorial - Thank you so much.

Mike, I made a recording with me reading a script, but Audacity only recorded on the top track, which only plays back on my left headphone.
How do I copy the top track to the bottom? It seems like this should be easy to sort out, but nothing I tried has worked so far. This is really frustrating! Audacity is supposed to be easy to use.
Thank you much, Anthony.
You can either duplicate the left channel or convert the track to mono
Any chance of using Audacity to create or import files for ACX and get it to meet the ACX Check-in tool with the Audacity plug-ins? How to problem solve each issue that might occur of RMS, Peak, and Noise floor to pass.
When I record in stereo, only the top of the track records while the lower half records nothing. How do I fix that?
That’s down to your audio input. You need to ensure both left and right and recording the same input from your interface which is outputting a mono signal.
Hi, love your tutorial. Thanks. But, my voice is usually quite easy for people to hear but Audacity records it as too quiet. Settings seem to be ok but I'm also just beginning. Can you help? I'm using the Q2U mic.
As long as you're recording at a decent level you can always boost it in post-processing later on
I don't have that particular zoom button, and I see you don't have it either in a video from years ago.
Thank you, that’s very helpful 😊
I am copying old cassette music into Audicaty and would like to know how to divide the songs into separate tracks please.
@@MikeRussell So if i were doing a in person 2-person podcast which option would I choose 1 mono or 2 stereo?
Totally depends on your audio set up as I'd recommend recording the host and guest on separate tracks.
Maybe post your audio set up in our community where you can share photos and screenshots community.musicradiocreative.com/
@@MikeRussell My Audio set up is a Motu M2 audio interface with 2 Samson q2u dynamic mics! So which setting would be the best the mono or the stereo
The XLR mic isn't essential but you can get better quality microphones if you go down that route as your needs change
Pretty amazing for open source (free) software.
Thank you!
I'm here to help you out!
a lot of thanks Mr Mike Russell 🙏
🙏
wow! thanks for the introduction, looks fun!
You're welcome! I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful and I hope you enjoy exploring Audacity further!
How do you make incisions in the sample or cut it? Acid pro has a scissors feature for this
You can the keyboard shortcut CTRL+I to split audio
Might be obvious, but why is there duplicates of the same wav files, why isnt there just one line of each?
Yes, this is possible
Can I add ISRC codes and UPC codes to Metadata in WAV Files before exporting? If so, would these codes be recognized by DSPs?
I sadly don’t know.
Mike, any recommendation for audio gargets for a beginner
What are you looking to achieve?
Great tutorial Mike!! Very helpful…. Thx..

Thank you for the video. Your audio sample is like nails on a chalk board.
Nice. I think? 😬
Is there a way to manually type in the minute and second so you can copy a section?
Absolutely, Audacity allows you to manually enter the exact timestamp for a selection, making it easy to copy specific sections of your audio.
Thanks for the help! This is a great tutorial :)
🙏
This has been helpful but I don't have nearly as many menu options. I am paying for the full version and I have downloaded additional effects. I'm using Windows and have no Auto Duck. Where can I find it?
Update: I figured that out - I had to use "Add Realtime Effects" and now Auto Duck appears on my Volume and Compression menu. New problem is that I can't get it to work...back to Google.
Just to confirm Audacity is free software
How do you get the visible range of the track back to the centre of the screen? How do you edit individual samples?
Try "Fit in Window" under the View menu.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience. That may be in your Mac settings instead.
how do i control the decibels level in audacity with out switch changing the frequency or the volume when change to the decibel view?

What if you have 2 microphones like for a podcast can you select which track has each mic?
Yes, in Audacity, you can select which track corresponds to each microphone input by configuring your recording preferences in the software settings.
Very helpful Mike , thanks a lot!

How do we get the same tool box I know other people see it too…
Can you cover overdubbing?
