  • A live performance of An Audience with Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull presented by All Flutes Plus at Bolivar Hall W1T 5DL filmed by Smallhill Productions and Bryn Reade. Ian Anderson plays and talks about his career, answering questions from the audience, joined at the end by Ian Mullin to play Grimenillis Lament and improvising. An honest and rare up close and personal appearance in front of just 150 people from a true musical legend.

      I got my first album at 14 YO. Columbia record club 12 albums for 99 cents......I was bad, I never paid a penny.

    This guy is really motivated by the music. Played to huge audiences for decades and still does this for a small audience of flutists. All that fame.... money presumably..... but it's still the music. Very nice.

    Besides a gifted singer / songwriter, Ian is an incredibly articulate guy...doesn’t get enough kudos for being so exceptionally well spoken!

    Saw Tull many times and truly love not only the raw brilliant talent of Ian and crew but the stage presence inclusive of theatrics and erudite repartee with the the audience!!!

    I have no reservations in saying how important Ian has been in my life. Because, in the end, it's the people that have brought us joy that are important and Ian has certainly done that for me for many decades.

    Ya know, watching this in 2020 at 55, growing up with rock music, i felt quite sad that someday this guy won't be with us anymore. We will have lost a unique genius, a one off....An Ian Anderson

    Great, Great, Great! Ian Anderson is a Superstar! Saw Jethro Tull once in Moscow and they were wonderful in concert! I am Russian, but Jethro Tull were always my Favourite Band and will always be! Thanks VERY much, Ian!

    He is a SUPERSTAR who is totally down-to-earth. A great many of today's wannabees could learn a great deal about humility from him. A master musician and composer. He was born in the same town as me and has always been one of my favourite musicians. Coupled with Martin Barre, they formed one of the best bands ever.

    Ian is prolific and has a very interesting intellect probably a genius I met him once at the civic theater got his autogragh he actually scolded me for talking to much told me to wait my turn it wasa great experience. He is still going strong after all of those years ........thanks for the music Ian I have learned many a lesson from your lyrics although lm THICK AS A BRICK you have helped me understand certain realities of life with a sense humor thanks good luck to you

    I love Ian, Have always been a huge fan, if you put 99 flute players and Ian in a room and blindfolded me, I could tell when he would play, such a unique sound, Truely a master of the flute :)

    Funny, I had about as much hair as he did in 1972, and now I have about as much hair as he has in 2014... I just lack all of his amazing talent.

    Ian Anderson certainly did a fine job lecturing to the audience about his flute style of playing and his musical career whether solo or with Tull. And I'm sure this well-behaved audience has learned a lesson or two from it.

    The acoustics of the hall really brought out Ian Anderson's flute and it sounds beautiful! I especially like the Irish tune.

    Saw Jethro tull at their first festival at sunbery I play saxophone but after seeing ian and his great playing got a fute took me ages to get notes out of it but now 50 years on still playing it thanks ian for your insperation

    I saw Tull in the early 80s a couple times and became a Jethro Tull fan. Ian's talent with the flute is amazing in concert with blow away skill while all over the stage. This concert is amazing. Thanks for posting it.

    What a treat. Thank you for posting this. I've been a fan of Jethro Tull ever since I first heard Stand Up in 1969. Jethro Tull and the Moody Blues showed me how great rock music could be. A thinking man's kind of music and as we all know, thinking is the best way to travel.

    Don’t care what anyone thinks Ian was one of the top musicians out of the 60s. I personally rank Tull higher than the Beatles

    What blows my mind is how Mr. Anderson is so accomplished and has no classical training.
    Amazing.
    I guess love of music and personal discipline make up the difference.

    Very interesting video, wish I'd been there. My hat goes off to you Ian Mullin for jamming with Ian A. You did look terrified to start with but by the end you were letting yourself go (well almost!). Keep it up - we need that next generation of innovative flute players, you've definitely got it!
    All that was missing for me was someone to ask Ian how he creates that breathy effect that is such a hallmark of his playing. Such a brilliant contrast to clear tone playing.

    23:14 LOL I like how the cameraman panned to his legs hoping he would do his famous stand on one leg thing, but he doesn't seem to do that anymore. A true Tull fan would know what I mean.

    If I had had access to Jethro Tull/Ian's music as a youth I would have spent more time with the flute than I did (though I still have one). Sadly, I focused on Brass and ended up only LOOKING like Ian. Ah well.

    It's interesting that three of my favourite bands - Marshall Tucker, Focus and, of course, Jethro Tull, all feature flute as their main instrumental sound.

      Andrew Gruffudd Jerry Eubanks was not only a great flute player but a hellva sax player too. He definitely gave the Marshall Tucker Band quite a unique sound. But the the lead instrumentalist in that band was Toy Caldwell.
