  • A follow up video I should have done a long time ago to demonstrate the results of the conversion process. Setup is as follows.
Power supply from mains AC. currently set up for 36Vdc
28V 100A alternator with regulator removed and the stator wires brought out.
Castle Phoenix edge 120HV ESC 12S (50V) max input.
Computer power supply to supply 12V to the field of the alternator.
Generic Servo tester to supply speed requests to the Castle ESC
Any questions or suggestions feel free to comment below and subscribe for follow up videos.

A similar generator pushes my car with a driver and a passenger. I like it. I also like to make interesting projects, one of which I do on my UA-cam channel.

    Amazing rpm

I think it's the fan why it seems so fast. I thought it was spinning at like 15K RPM, but I put a tach on it and it was like 7K.

i was like.. oh thats smooth... and then, oh.. thats scary! why did you use a delta configuration? were you limited by voltage?

    • @elser2utube

It does sound a bit scary, according to the tach its only 5500Rpm on the high side. Delta gave the best torque and higher speed. I switch the configuration back and forth to get measurements on the 4 alternators I have reconfigured this far. I am slightly limited on voltage because the caps in my power supply have a 14V WVDC rating and I have 3 in series, so maxed out at around 36V. The power supply itself can go up to 110VDC .

So, you're drawing 60-70 amps at 36 volts?

Not as it is being run here, it would need a mechanical load to pull its rated load. 2.4kW is the rated load ofthe alternator, basically the power the coils could generate, or use in this case without letting the smoke out of the windings. I have loaded it mechanically to 80A at 48V which is almost 4kw without incident.

@@elser2utube I mean, some alternators like the ones on some Ford Super Duty's can output up to 200A continuously, so you should be able to put in maybe twice that for short bursts, or cooling the stator by soldering some copper pipe and passing water through.

@@00000005547 Indeed, I actually just got one off a dodge 3500 which is 200A @12V that's still however rated for roughly 2.4kw continuous. But what I love about this alternator is that it has a splines one way bearing on the shaft which will.come in handy for the application I intend to use it for which is a ebike which does not drive the motor while pedalling. It's also physically smaller than the one in this video.

The one I was using here is 120A and it is rated for 12S, Castle also has a 180A.
