    "Deep Wasps!" 10/10! Thank you, as always, for reminding us how fun and approachable our hobby can be -your enthusiasm continues to come across in each of your videos!

    You said in a few other comments that you are ok where you are at, hope it stays that way!
    The paint schemes on these wasps are really good. When you first put down all that yellow I was worried for you…but they turned out great. This video also reminds me I have a few Turbo Duck…er Dork paints I still need to try!
    Stay safe!!

    Thinking of you in L.A. and the hell-scape it seems to be at the moment. The burnt wasp thing seems like fore-shadowing. Great looking monsters. The paint job is hitting the nail on the head.

      It is weird coincidence, but where I am all is fine. Let a couple of my friends know they have a place to crash if they have to evacuate 😬 Glad u liked the wasps! 🍻

    I'd be curious to see laserface test over zenithal priming, or even a textured 3d printed swatch card with white, greys to black up top and a limited color palette on bottom. with a detail texture to test out how it works into recesses. maybe thinning and blending each swatch at the edges to really see what can be done with it. But that sounds like it would use up a whole bottle just trying it out.

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  4 дні тому +1

      It definitely needs some more tests and with an airbrush too I think. Future plans! 🍻

      Thank you, yes everything is fine where I am (15-ish miles south of Pacific Palisades and Hollywood). I keep wondering where 180k people have evacuated TO. 😵‍💫

    Couple things:
    1. Most important: Are you and yours OK? Are y'all whole? Are you safe?
    2. These are awesome! I didn't know I needed... mini giant wasps until now.
    I hope you're good and not in the path of the fire. I'll be praying for ya.

      Thank you sir, yes, I’m a-ok, about 15 miles south of the fires and clean air without wind here so far. Glad you liked the wasps too! 🍻

      @tabletopalchemy  4 дні тому +1

      lol excellent - i know I’d made the best choice … now if only the paint worked as advertised 😂 (I’m sure it’s operator error)

  • @AndreSjoberg
    @AndreSjoberg 4 дні тому +1

    and the toasted wasp scheme turned out great, lava-like glow from the inside, they should totally be in the movie as well as practical effects :D
    This is the problem with videos like this, I see cool shit, and now I wanna spend tomorrow and the weekend making one of them Magma Wasps as a larger model, but then I remember I have to do two paid web projects tomorrow and the weekend is already lost to another thing - I hate adulting.

    On your test piece, try undercoating with gloss black, then airbrush on several coats of the color shift paint, blowing straight air to dry the layers before applying the next. The effect builds through multiple layers. Some colors need only 3 - 4 coats while some require several more. Airbrushing really speeds up the process, and keeps the layers more consistent.

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  4 дні тому +3

      Ah gross black! And someone else mentioned airbrushing too so I will try that, thanks!

    • @rustedbeetle
      @rustedbeetle 4 дні тому +1

      @tabletopalchemy the shifting paint is translucent. The gloss will reflect light back through the paint. A matte black tends to arrest the light so you only get top reflection.

      @rustedbeetle oh interesting! That’s pretty cool, def gonna experiment more with it

    I definitely don't mind the flight stands. I'm a "clear bases for life" kind of guy myself.
    What if my desert troops get called away on a spec ops mission in the tundra? (These are the thoughts that I think.)

    Some advice from someone who's been playing with color shift and interference paints for a while:
    1. You're going to get your most striking results by laying this stuff down over a dark, glossy coat. The reason for this boils down to physics. The inherent mechanism for how these work depends on the light reflecting off of the treated mica flakes, and not being overwhelmed by the light reflected back through the layers of paint.
    2. Because of the reflection issue, the other bit you need to worry about is the angle of incidence, i.e. the flakes need to be deposited as flatly as possible, hence the reason for a high-gloss undercoat. Your best shot to accomplish this is kinda counterintuitive, though. You're gonna wanna work kinda dry, and work gradual. If you're adding anything to thin the paint, use a high-gloss additive, such as gloss varnish, or actual acrylic ink, and add it in small volumes. You're basically trying to drybrush the features you want to have the effect, and it's gonna take a few passes before you really start to see results, since you're basically trying to paint with a metallic medium.
    If you're going to add pigment, go one of three ways: black, complimentary (the hue opposite on the color wheel...), or hue-matched, depending on your desired effect. Stick to single-pigment inks to achieve this, as it will save you a lot of headache in troubleshooting later.

    Cool, didn't know you were involved with #rosd. We play that sometimes, and even have a battle report on our channel. Just finished painting another ranger today. Regarding the Laser paint you're using, I tried that brand of paint once. Once. Those wasps you painted look WICKED COOL.

    Sharp new look and a sharp new paint job, I love it. The test model gives me very strong jRPG vibes really reminiscent of some of the monsters you'd fight against in such games. Also, there was no scorn, I am the master of overloading paintbrushes, trust me! And who can resist a paint called "Laserface"? I mean, we are only human, most of the time.

    • @tabletopalchemy

    The 'Deep Wasps' turned out great! I've had a bunch of Reaper 'Demonic Fly' miniatures that I always wanted to use in RoSD but I had been procrastinating about which paint scheme to put on them for...um,...too long! But, I think you have solved my problem. Thank you. Thinking of everyone over there. Stay safe ay!

    • @tabletopalchemy

      I did indeed keep the color shift wasp 🤙 and yes, I’m pretty far south of the fires and haven’t had any issues, thanks for asking, much appreciated 🍻

    We are strange creatures indeed that “deep wasps” is so much more terrifying than “giant flies”
    … though “plague drones” I have to say is indeed terrifying (I love using papa Nurgle minions in D&D)

      @tabletopalchemy  3 дні тому +1

      Thanks! Well, my “current” battle report game is Silver Bayonet but that’s been on hiatus for 6 months due to my time availability and the movie project, but at some point … I’m sure we’ll see the deep wasps somewhere lol. 🍻

    Even before I watch the video, I hope you, your family and friends are all safe from the fire's (not sure where you are in California). The rest of the world seems to be freezing, by which I mean most of the US and the UK. See we do care!

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  4 дні тому

      Ah thanks, that’s much appreciated. My area is a-ok, I’m roughly 15ish miles south of the fires and there’s no winds in this area (strangely). 🤙🙏🏼
