there are good skaters, great skaters, legends and then there is rodney mullen. he is on another level.
and as good as he is, he is the most humble skater alive. I was watching one of his public speaking events and one of the first things he says is that he has been skating long enough to to say that there is no "best skater". Im not sure if he was just trying to be humble or if he honestly doesnt realize that he is the best skater ever
Perhaps another planet even
J B well said sir
But he will never be Tony Hawk though.
@@divinitygaming8673 very different worlds. And street skateboarding is quite a lot bigger now than vert. So influence wise Tony is not were near the same.
It's 2016 and Rodney F'n Mullen is trending on youtube! I guess there is still good in the world.
right lol
He is an inspiring human being and the creator of skateboarding as we know it today (street). There is no reason why he shouldnt be trending!
Not really, but nice to see a video for once, amongst thousands, that shows a talented person with shitty mass-porn editing.
everyone's playing Pokemon, blink 182 released a new song, Clinton running for president Tarzans in theatres... What year is it!
What's my age again? :P
Best Tony Hawk Pro Skater loading screen ever.
I wouldn't play the game if that was the case haha
Rodney doesn’t mess up a trick, the board does
But he doesn't get mad at it because he's the sweetest human being alive
😂yes. He's the chuck Norris of skating
He invented that board design though
Or the editing of the video ruins the entire thing....

That was great, but you know what would be greater? Being able to actually see the tricks without all this camera effect bullshit.
the sense of vertigo the video gives the viewer is the closest we'll get to feeling what Rodney does. he's had his share of amazing skate clips that show his skill but this something different. you feel his struggle, his doubt, his age... more importantly his burning desire... he's got nothing to prove nor has he ever cared bout that... love for the art. creating. skateboarding.
You must be pretty drunk or need glasses I guess.
i feel like the only reason for your comment was for likes because it holds SOME truth. but mabee you should be content with something that has no affect on your fucking life.
There are thousands of hours of Mullen, your comment is just meant to be dickish, and that's bullshit on something like this. No matter what it is, some dipshit will complain, holy shit.
+Adam Whitney no fuck this editing , i could barely tell the difference between a 360 and 180, like i came for rodney, not editing skills, which sucked ass
the fact that he can do a one arm handstand at 50 years old is amazing enough.
i wish i could hang out with rodney
Thing is, he’d be totally down. Dude is also legendary for being a total sweetheart who will chill with anyone. Facebook is littered with photos of him, chilling with fans all the time. To this day. It’s so cool.
This is one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. Rodney Mullen inspires me so much. Great video
Tony Hawk brought me into skating, but Rodney Mullen made me love it!!
I don't skate and I think this man is an artist.
Accurate af
true!
Same here I learned all of his old school flat ground tricks
THIS

This man is a read more
He's like a martial artist in his prime
WRONG. He IS THE legend.
We are so lucky to be alive in this era.
There will never be another Rodney Mullen.
That’s an understatement
This editing took so much away from what Mullen does.
Agreed. Just let me watch what he's put hundreds of hours into without all the effects.
*thousands
more like hundreds of days he used to practice more than 5 hours (people sometimes said he practiced 8 hours a day) and he's been skating since the late 70s
Bullshit, the editing is ace.
+Blitzpunk That's your opinion. Mine is that it's distracting and not necessary. I've been freestyle skateboarding for 8 years now and i like to see Mullen's tricks plain.
Love the tricks, wish I could see half of them.
I could understand it just fine.
I thought this was awesome. Saw the new tricks just fine, and a new beautiful perspective on others.
I mean it's a beautiful video on it's own, but I wish it were a simple part with some slow-mo here and there. I still appreciate it for what it is though.
Wow thats crazy!!
Get off ya game boi. N ya might b able even do some of em.😩
This is what happens when an arty farty editor tries to create art when he was already looking at a master piece. Shame
my thoughts exactly

yes. fuck me and vogue. we want it. give me vogue in my mouth. vogue me right in my no-no-hole.
true
I’m not even a skater, but watching Rodney brings tears of happiness and admiration to my eyes. It’s been said time and again, but his style and execution are just otherworldly. Truly an artist.
💯
Definitely
I'm really curious as to how his disapproving parents feel about the fact that he actually became a global legend.
Wow you're known for being the #1 skateboarder in the world but you no doctor
Oh well

@Uncle Adolf his parents never agreed with the router rodney took actually. they heavily disapproved
Want to make "Art" with Rodney Mullen? Simply point a camera at him and let him do the rest. Absolutely no editing required.
Agreed
agree
I’d be so honored to skate with him
exactly thought the same thing
You do realize that all of his parts in skate vids were highly edited.
New? No that's just Rodney Mullen...
some tricks are pretty new. like that oldschool kickflip to manual at 0:51 that was pretty sick
i don't remember him doing a crossfoot casper in any other video (maybe i'm missing one), but that was fkn insane!
+Lukas he did it in his gracias part on ride channel
+Lukas yeah, ive definitely seen him do that before lol
He's been doing that trick since the 80s, the only new combo was at 1:13 -- and I've haven't seen Rodney do those switch foot pogo combos since the 80s too.
I want the raw footage. Not this stupid light show. Music is great and the tricks are great though.
I would love to hear the skateboard too.
if you want raw footage what any.other.video on youtube. The whole point of this is to be shot in 360 degrees and to be interactive - go to the website and have a look and read Rodney's insights on the tricks and the project as a whole. This wasn't necessarily about creating a skate video, it's more than that.
I like the 360 footage. I just want to hear the board. They could've edited the raw sound to blend with the music. I think that would've been really cool. Add some reverb and what not.
I couldn't, it was un-enjoyable for me. Felt like it could induce epilepsy
Tom Middlebrook lol and im epieptic :O
You know he is great when tony hawk says he is the greatest skater of all time
where does he say that? not that I don't believe you-- would just like to see it

There are very few people who have the chance to say they truly mastered something. What you have done for one sport, is incomparable to any other pro athlete. A toy manufacturer put wheels on a piece of wood and said “here you can buy this and roll around on it” and for 15 friggin years that’s what people did. Then you sir came along and politely said “This thing can do more than just roll” and unlocked potential in a product that would lead it to become a recognized sports league. You did what no one thought was even possible. Did Lebron James create a new way to bounce a ball? Did tiger woods create a new way to hit a ball with a piece of metal? Did Michael Phelps create a new way to swim? Did Mohammad Ali, may he Rest In Peace, create a new way to use a boxing glove? Did Tom Brady create a new way to throw a football? The resounding answer is no. You single handily created a 2.5 billion dollar sport industry, all by transforming a one use product into something with almost limitless potential. It’s now going to be in the olympics this year. Congratulations to what I truly believe is the greatest Athlete of the past 100 years. Well done, Godspeed Rodney.
If Rodney doesn't inspire you to dig deep and discover your own greatness then I don't know what will.
Rodeney is the epitome of commitment and perseverance.
He is Art is Motion.
Well for people who are passionate artists weather it skateboarding painting or other that’s their life. We all Just live every day one at a time
yooo i have watched your videos
tricks are great but the cinematography is to much.
Sooper cool tricks, but the cinematography is kind of cheesy.
so is you're spelling, it's too much
*your
I think Mullen would've perhaps seen this as an opportunity to bring some proper skateboarding to a new audience. Atleast you didn't have to buy a copy of the new THPS to watch this m8!
As for me its awesome! There were not so much effects and if u wanna watch and learn something via slow speed - you are free to go. The montage did not spoil the tricks . P.S. I always watch it before going to skate! P.P.S. I watched Rodney's early videos and according to them you can see his tricks in this video as clear as it had been before.
this editing is totally not necessary
it's an art jackass
Totally ruins the skating
Well I would love to see some raw footage. But I think the editing is pretty sweet.
+Brads4e even without the editing the board is disappearing at the bottom of the frame sometimes... he's going out of the light into dark on like half the tricks. The person who shot this is clueless.
This video's only concept is trying to use Rodney Mullen's talent to prop up this pretentious Steve Sebring douchebag. So, if he's supposedly one of the best photographers in the world why does this video look like shit and how did these people do this same thing over two years ago and do a far superior job at it ?> vimeo.com/122756899
he is a fucking legend
If ever there was a better example the phrase: "Poetry in Motion" I haven't seen it.
2:39 I've already mastered this one
Rodney is a king! But this video made me feel sick like I just got off of Gravitron.
Rodney is king and I saw someone get thrown up on in the graviton XD
Lmao...
I have to agree, while the actual tricks looked dope as fuck in that 360 shot, I'd like to see them with a static camera. It was cool, but sickening to experience.
If I have learned one thing from reading the comments from skateboarding fans is that they only have appreciation for the art of skateboarding and no other arts.
I realize there is a strong polarization of opinion about the editing in the video, but as someone who has seen Mullen live on more than one occasion since the early 80's, I think the video is beautiful... hear me out....
Back in the day skating was viewed as counter culture and counter productive... lots of people thought it was a waste of time and money, what we "slackers" did with our time.
This video shows a level of refined skill and beauty - his mastery of the craft - and it is very difficult for those who still see skating as a waste to deny the elegance. The editing helps it to be much more palatable for those who do not understand it. Understanding is the key to acceptance and positive regard.
Personally though, I thoroughly enjoy raw footage with all the blurry moments, edges, and wrinkles, too.
Peace.
I don't like the editing because I can't tell what the flip he's doing. I heard him say in an interview that he did a rail 360 shove it to rail in this video, but I can't even tell where it is in the video. I'd like to see it because I've never seen anyone do that before, but I can't because this video sucks.
Who cares if skating was considered counter culture or not? The editing in this video is terrible. The best part about Mullen's tricks are his actual tricks, not some kind of slow-motion blur obscuring everything that actually happens. Heck, the entire video would have been much much better had every trick slowed down to slow motion showing the trick in detail versus whatever crap this video was.
Lauren Rodriguez perfectly stated
Lauren Rodriguez beautifully put, sister.
The effects are obstructing his talent and is a disgrace to his fans. Simply put. The ones who have edited and layed effects upon the footage are probably not skaters. You can tell.
This might be the coolest thing i've seen in years. 2020 here.
This dude is the greatest skater to ever live.
The man who invented the kickflip. LIVE FOREVER RODNEY!
He invented far more than that...The flat ground Ollie for one, but hundreds of other tricks and combos.
The flat ground Ollie? No sir, Alan Gefland holds that honor.
Gefland invented the ollie on vert. Rodney took it to the flatground. Gonz gave it style.
+Clint Murphy Rodney saw very skaters ollieing off the quarter pipes and took it to flat. If you watch his interviews, he talks about it several times.
Yeah, I looked it up and saw you were right. I never knew that. Also found an article saying Gefland learned it from someone else!
Way to soil greatness and human achievement with lackluster editing/lighting. Sorry Vogue, but you missed the point completely...
One might think your knowledge of Vogue is lacking, and you missed the point completely, todd0000420
eh i doubt it
I couldn't agree more! It feels like the videographers are a little more invested in themselves than celebrating who Rodney Mullen is and what he can do.
It's an art piece meant to go hand in hand with Rodney's own art. Seems like you missed the point completely.
It doesnt go hand in hand, fool. Rodney is to be held in the highest regard. A true innovator and master of his craft. The title of innovator doesnt even scratch the surface of what he did for skateboarding. There are few men on the planet like Rodney and ill be goddamned if he needed some fucking jerkoff with a camera, employed by a shit magazine to throw their little spin on things like they were ever relevant artistically.
The thing about Rodney is not only is he an incredible skater, he's an incredible human being. In 1984, my dad asked Rodney if he could teach me how to skate. My father was a history teacher at PK. Yonge and Rodney was in his history class. He was a senior at that the time and I was in 8th grade. For the next six months after school near the cafeteria and at a place called Sensation Basin, Rodney and I spent hours together skating and doing free style tricks. (I wasn't very good but he was very patient and understanding.) Rodney would practice a lot of these moves for hours at a time. I didn't know at that the time what an incredible opportunity I had. Rodney was in his own world when he would skate, not a lot of talking just laughing and smiling. It's great to see him living out his dreams and what a positive impact he's having in his journey. One of the all time great human beings of our generation.
Amazing story ❤️
Upon the discovery of a youth serum/everlasting life, scientists first priority is to immediately administer it to Rodney Mullen so that he can innovate and progress skating once again to the next level.
Guy is 50 friggin years old here and still super relevant in the skateboarding world.
Somebody should film him with a high speed camera then do ultra nice slowmo shots with some nice music!
HDTanel SloMoGuys
There's a very recent video with him and PhysicsGirl; great slow motion shots and talking about skating physics.
The Physics Girl video: ua-cam.com/video/yFRPhi0jhGc/v-deo.html
terrible editing and overuse of effects. It would be nice to see his actual tricks.
wow, no words can describe how amazing this is...
What Einstein was too math and Mozart was too music, Rodney is too skateboarding
Still one of the greatest videos on UA-cam. It’s a shame it only has 2M views.
That guy's a living legend - not sure how often such a figure is recognized in other fields before they're gone, but it's true of Mullen for his sport. Great to have him still around, still influencing things.
Who thought it was a good idea to butcher the footy with that terrible editing? Why such dramatic lighting? It's skateboarding, we want to be able to actually see the trick. Terrible video of an amazing person.
except that the editing isn't terrible and why not "dramatic" light? and who is this "we" you speak of? I assume you'd prefer a standard skate video? - which is fine. But think of it this way - the director had a vision for the video and Rodney was hyped on it otherwise he wouldn't have done it - chances are some of the creative ideas for the video were Rodney's. Sorry you didn't like it, it's actually a great piece of work.
That's the problem, man. When it comes to art, not many are inclined to appreciate it. And thus it matches Rodney's style perfectly, because his style is not something that's appreciated my many. You find many get on the hype train and shout, "Yea, Rodney is the greatest Yea!". But not many actually see the art in what he does. They just see dizzying spins.
Well Rodney disagrees with you, sorry. :)
FAMOUS Well thankfully what makes Rodney who he is and makes skateboarding what it is now, is that he couldn't care less what you and the other 80% of the people think.
it was directed by Steven Sebring in collaboration with Rodney that was then published by Vogue. The project is similar to many others that Steven has done. Vogue has no creative input whatsoever.
Completely bonkers that Mullen is 50 years old in this clip. The dude is a wizard.
I am 46 and seeing this inspired me to get back on my board again. I am using google voice to text right now to type this because both of my arms are broken.😞
this is not skating anymore. This is love in it's purest form.

"Let's make it dark as fuck and barely visible and let's constantly fucking spin the camera to make the viewers disoriented and still left wondering what half the tricks even were"
I guess you had a welding accident or something
Lol, nobody can do it.

Mullen is the king of skateboarding.
This video made me feel really dizzy.
This made me dizzy/sick with the camera spinning in circles
This is mind blowing af, but I'm even more mind blown by the fact that even rodney dropped a new video part before pj lol
lol true
Rodney could do all these tricks in like 10 minutes

+Kaos PJ Ladd you should watch Pj Ladd's wonderful horrible life
Whoever tried Recording Mullen with 360 cameras almost broke through the matrix there.
This dude is literally a genius, I have so much appreciation for him as a person
A true testament to the human spirit Rodney. I am now 44 yrs old and I picked out a Veriflex "California" from a military exchange post in Germany as a kid in 1979. My body now reminds me of the goals I set and the perception I quested with many boards including your "Checkers and Skull" freestyle board in 89'. That daily pain also reminds of the freedom those boards and that ambition rewarded me with: a sense of accomplishment, the understanding of the commitment it would have to take to be "Great". Thank you Rodney, from my spirit to yours, you are that living testimonial. Beautiful and well done.
Guy is 50 years old and still does this. Unbelievable! This is pure art.
Was "Executive Producer" intentionally misspelled?
this video looks like it had a "excecutiev producer."
Rodney, the sublime genius. MASTER - LEGEND!!! Thanks for this Vogue!
Idgaf Rodney Mullen is Skateboarding's God and he wrote the Skate Bible💯
This is why Rodney Mullen is my favorite skater to play as in THPS

yeah last week I did 1 hand stand on floor and get my back hurt =P and im only 27
Who else here is just skipping through bits of this video, and then is about to go look up the classic tony hawk pro skater rodney mullen vids?

2:45 blown away
1:08 so amazing i almost cried
I love Rodney's style but, I dont like the camera effects on this video, I can't see what's happening! Please Rodney do another "clean camera no effect full color" part :P
Liked the video cause Rodney Mullen, but the editing really is too much. Vogue clearly don't have any skaters on their staff lol. They would hate to (attempt to) see this shit lol. Should've kept it simple/minimal.
Thanks for all Rodney Mullen, are 20 years who follow you and admire you for your unique talent and genius.
This is 4 minutes of straight up CHILLS. Everyone alive today can literally say they’ve seen the greatest skateboarder in human history. This guy just nails the whole blend of imagination and reality. I’m in awe.

The motion blurr vfx kinda takes away from the beauty. Pretty poor choice in video editing.

Rodney Mullen has a stunt double, and his name is Rodney Mullen.
Rodney Mullen was a socially awkward kid who grew into a man that changed the world with his views on not just skating but life in general. Rodney Mullen may be the goat of street skating but few realize the impact he's had on the world outside skating. 10/10 human being
Yo, that kick flip that he did UPSIDE DOWN BALANCING ON ONE HAND THEN DID IT WITH THAT SINGLE HAND AND LANDED BACK ON THE BOARD WITH GRACE ARE YOU F*****G KIDDING ME.
There are no words, no words that are worthy of describing Rodneys talent level. Don't bother trying to find the words, they haven't been invented yet.
This is post "medieval" scar tissue tearing he went through. That's insane
800,000 views? I'm sorry I have been an advid skater for a long time. Been a Tony Hawk and Mullen fan for even longer. Played all the video games you can count on one hand. This man right here is Legend with a capital "L" You have invented the tricks that the modern skate boarder to this day uses to better themselves. If it wasn't for you Rodney setting the foundation for us all we wouldn't have the amazing mansion of skateboarding we're sitting on now. @@fademusic1980 @almostkinda He skates "stanceless" now; you can see him talk about this in some of his TEDx presentations. There's no more regular/switch or forwards/backwards for him. Everything is the same in both directions.
I think people dont realize, that Rodney has become skating, not a skateboarder - but one with skating itself, like MJ in basketball or Luciano Pavarotti in opera. Pure art.
G.O.A.T.
Dudes in his 50's x( what am I doing with my life lmao
When you finally max out all your stats
I guess the better trick for shooting Rodney was just to point your glass at him and not to forget press the record button.
This kind of editing itself is astonishing. But the most important part of a trick is knowing when to use it.
I love how everyone hates the editing lol
Lost in the Dark Same
You can watch Rodney do all these same tricks on other videos. He's got so many. I don't know what some people complain about
Anyway, yah. I think it needed a few years to be perfection or for it to grow on people
Love the video. Love the editing. Love the tricks. Love the music. Long live Rodney! -A happy-go-lucky dude who inspirational to us all!
No one can surpass this legend, he will truly be carved in history of skating
Most also don't know that Rodney used to practice his entire run blindfolded. Rodney is one of the best skaters to ever live, period! :-) Almost every trick you see being done today, Rodney was doing it 20 plus years ago and so many making UA-cam channels trying to learn how and to attempt to do the tricks he did, Great inspiration for sure!
That nollie 360 looked SO WEIRD with the edit.
A+ skating from the godfather of flatland/freestyle
yea no one does a nollie back 3 quite like mullen.
i don't think even my closest friends understand how happy it makes me to see new rodney footage. it may not be a legit part but dammit it's good enough for me
Thank you, Rodney. Massive respect from The Motivation crew.
If he won every roshambo, he would win every battle at the berrics, and this is just true
Rodney's style will forever be timeless, he's the greatest skater on earth as long as he is living.
Way after he is dead, too: there are no skaters even close to his level. Maybe in another 50 years. Who knows.
This is edited like a 13 year olds UA-cam channel intro.
who remembers the old daewon song vs. rodney mullen vids? battle of the titans!
Now I'm waiting for a street part
If only..
The day Rodney Mullen releases a new Street part is the day I can die a happy man.
Some years later and I don't even know what I clicked to get here but I'm glad cause Rodney is truly a god.. like a forever legend. I miss skating so much :(
I practically got emotional watching this. This guy is everything to skateboarding…
Forget Jordan, Maradona or Ronaldo, there isn't and there wasn't someone so beyond the others in his game as Rodney is and was in skateboarding. Period.
Gretzky would like to have a word
Beethoven
Toni Bou, he's another absolute legend in his sport.
