I used to have one of those Clio Williams when I was a young man. One of my favourite cars of all time! This was a real blast from the past - yep, flaky 90’s interior and skittish ride on bumpy roads BUT…. that thing flies! No sense of inertia, it almost felt like a skateboard the way it scuttled down the road. Magical steering and predictable lift-off oversteer, it’s one of the greats. Plus it looks awesome, a muscular chunky little nugget of a hatch-back. “Oh Papa” indeed!
Ironically there was NO tie in with concerns to design or engineering between the Williams F1 team and Renault sport. The only link is the name, which always seems odd.
As a 20 year old with a love of classics, I love the element of very little creature comforts and I like driving old hatches on motorways, I adore the Williams 2 and it's my dream hot hatch for sure. I hope they don't get too much steeper in the next 10 years for my sake!
Good to see the Clio Williams. A 2.0L in a little shopping car was always going to be fun. No mention of the bonnet bulge! If you saw that in the rear view mirror back in the day you'd move over!! I purchased a Clio 182 last week and I'm having fun every time I pop out in it.
What an amazing episode, I love when people remember how nice it was to drive these old cars. I would suggest more reviews of cars like this Renault, try to find some Mitsubishi Eclipse or Nissan R34, Ford Escort Cosworth and other cars from those years.
Nice to see the Clio getting used. Proper 90’s icon. The lock up at the end of the video - I didn’t realise these had no ABS. I guess Jason was driving at that point… 😂
Excellent and interesting, especially the price! - 2 x GR Yaris Mega Road Trip for 2022 being planned as we speak I hope - you promised ........... Still love my GR, it's just perfect for the Brecon roads...
I think my 2004 Ep3 Type R slots in beautifully between these 2 cars. It is easy to see why the Honda is almost universally loved. It is a FANTASTIC little car.
Really enjoyed this episode! I wonder have new cars become so sophisticated that they have lost all character, or am I just getting old that I find the older stuff so much more interesting.
I had a Williams 2 back in the early 2000s, kind of wish I never sold it, was an angry little thing. I had the Clio Cup racing ECU on it, which had to be soldered in! Made it a whole other animal, grrrrr

I loved my Williams except for one thing the outside digital temp display it is so bright and in your face that I took the bulb out.....the Yaris I'd love one a pair of greats for sure
Great vid and agree with your joint summary, though I think you were harsh on the Clio Williams regarding understeer: I noticed it has Michelin CROSS CLIMATE tyres on, and this will do the grip and turn-in no favours. Otherwise 10/10. Nice to see this Williams - related car tested the week Frank Williams died, kind of a nice little tribute. 👍🏻
I agree, both with the timing and the understeer. Crap tyres will do that. You can easily get the car to lift off oversteer and then balance it with the throttle. Takes a little balls and practice though :D
@@BarneyWobba Mich Cross Climates are hardly crap tyres and, at the time year of this film, will give up very little grip wise to a summer tyre like a Pilot Sport.
Love the Clio Williams a great Hot Hatch icon, personally although I love the Clio I would stick with the Yaris as a Keeper!! around 2001 I bought an Lotus Esprit Sport 300 (kept for 10 years) from a real PetrolHead whom almost died in a Clio Williams when he was driving on Wales and he had a long history of performance cars. Much safer to keep the Yaris if you have to chose between both of them!!

30k for a Williams 1 is nuts, 30k for a Williams 2 means you need to be in a lunatic asylum. They are realistically worth about 5. You can buy a 16v for 3 and put an f7r in it and you effectively have the same driving experience if you fit the williams front suspension (total cost probably 5k). People who pay 30k are nutters and need locking up. 1300kg for the Yaris. No thanks. Just like all modern cars it is too big and too fat. And you talked about the wheels but totally overlooked the fact the williams has a massive advantage due to its 7kg wheels. The MK1 clio is also one of the only cars that you can fit any of its own part (including all body parts) in. You can actually fit a bonnet and a tailgate in the back of the clio at the same time. So it not only pisses on the Yaris for fun, its also more practical. Plus you get 40 mpg on a run. Also the seats in the phase 2 mk1 clios are probably the best seats in any car ever.
I had a mk1 Clio and didn't think it had plastic front wings. Just ones that went rusty. I know a mk2 had plastic wings. They general rot boxes really as mine was going rusty at less than a year old. So that will have or need rust proofing fast as it will rust away before your very eyes. I bet Renault never paid out on it so called eight year rust warranty.
I always have been in love with the Clio, one of the very best ever Still,if you ask me Yaris o Clio,I go for the Yaris,it make it look like a great deal,it's spicy and new No comparison
Good episode Jason and Damian. I think Av use to have a blue Renault just that colour, not sure if it was this model though, then she moved to VW’s. Great to see you both, take care guys.
hello mate , this isn't really relevant to your vid but I'm think about buying a 488 2016 - 17 for around 160k but Im a bit concerned about 2 things first depreciation and second being able to sell it after around 18 months of ownership , I understand the car will probably depreciate around 15 k in that time , however the greater concern is being able to actually sell it when the time comes round , I'm kind of assuming that it will have to be sold back to a dealer which makes me think that they will offer 20 k less than the value , so the overall net loss will be in the region of 35k for 18 months of ownership , I'm I in the right ball park here ? just after a bit go guidance , knowing obv you guys are very experienced with this ?

I would auction a Renault if I won one as a prize, but doesn't the Clio look elegantly designed, stylish, in proportion, and subtle, compared to the white angular, oh dear Yaris. Understand the concept from earlier videos, but where is the feel good factor away from a track. As always, personal choice and I am sure Toyota will sell lots.

Still,if you ask me Yaris o Clio,I go for the Yaris,it make it look like a great deal,it's spicy and new
No comparison
Good episode Jason and Damian. I think Av use to have a blue Renault just that colour, not sure if it was this model though, then she moved to VW’s. Great to see you both, take care guys.
I think she might have had a Renault 5 in blue, not sure about a Clio, but she might've.
Us Americans have the engine and the drivetrain but we have to suffer through a shitty 4 door-only Corolla chassis that weighs more than the Yaris
If you remove the tube from de airbox of the clio it will make a very nice hauling noise when giving it the beans :)
hello mate , this isn't really relevant to your vid but I'm think about buying a 488 2016 - 17 for around 160k but Im a bit concerned about 2 things first depreciation and second being able to sell it after around 18 months of ownership , I understand the car will probably depreciate around 15 k in that time , however the greater concern is being able to actually sell it when the time comes round , I'm kind of assuming that it will have to be sold back to a dealer which makes me think that they will offer 20 k less than the value , so the overall net loss will be in the region of 35k for 18 months of ownership , I'm I in the right ball park here ? just after a bit go guidance , knowing obv you guys are very experienced with this ?
Yes you are in the right ballpark there.
The lack of visibility on new cars is worrisome
Warning to the gr family someone tried to steal my dad's gr last night came into the house about 11pm grabbed a handbag unfortunately for my sister it was her bag & stolen her car 🤬
Those sons of bitches
@@TheCarGuysTV thanks for your reply sorry to put this on your video just wanted people see this it's just sickening my dad's 70+ & it's the first new car he's ever had now it's put him off doesn't want the stress.
Prices can only go up since Sr Frank's passing.
Still, i have the clio all day
Not fair… Delta Integrale would be the best to get next to the yaris 👌
My mate had one , it handled really great but my corolla 1.6 GLI 120ps could beat it down the motorway no problem. Above 70 it hit a wall.
Sold out, actually
Clio Williams tutta la vita ❤️
