I think you black belts have been training for so long that you've forgotten that 99% of people who take up BJJ quit before they even reach blue belt. For the vast majority of us, the trap and roll is very effective. I've found that even against "higher" white belts that know better and should be able to defend it, they often forget they have to, as they start concentrating too hard on attacks once they've established mount. Even if they do defend it, it often buys me more time and space to set up an elbow escape
From a self defence aspect, I don't think it should be so easily dismissed either. I know a teenager who was in a punch up with a kid a bit taller and heavier, and went for a double leg, and stuffed it up and ended up being driven backwards and ended up bottom of mount. Sure, the kid wasn't high level by any means, but the other kid hadn't trained grappling at all, and could have easily been thrown off with a trap and roll. And yeah, a higher level practitioner *shouldn't* stuff up a double leg like that, but my point is, anything can happen in a self defence situation, especially if you're not used to the adrenaline of a real fight, so in my opinion, from a self defence point of view training to escape from bad positions is essential, and having simple basic techniques like this high on the muscle memory can be the most effective against an untrained antagoniser, and could save your life.
Regardless, thanks for the vid, it's a thought provoking perspective, and I definitely learnt some higher level knowledge.

Training to beat white belts isn't the goal though, it's to beat black belts. While the trap a roll escape can work, the escapes we showed will work well on white/blue belts/self defense obviously. The trap and roll can work and we talked about how to implement it a little bit such as to set up the frame and hip escape as you mentioned. So the people who inevitably quit will still have something to take with them, and the ones that stay can continue to build upon their skill set. Self defense is a whole other area that these techniques will cover, but you could also flail a reversal and have it work as the people you will probably defend yourself against are terrible on the ground. That and you fucked up so long ago if you're mounted in a self defense situation.
I would teach the same regardless, but I will not cater to focusing on worse techniques because I assume the students will quit by blue belt. We still teach the trap and roll, it's just not what we focus on first.

I really enjoy your measured, methodical, and reasonable approach to each technique.
    Learning a Ton!
    Thank you both
