This is an all to frequent thing. But it gets worse!
So many... I mean soooo many people get initially in trouble (say at a bar or something) and the papers print about it because it's a good story or whatever. Then these people get excused/dismissed/not guilty...
Now the way it SHOULD work, is that newspaper or whatever is supposed to follow through with these things. They should be legally obligated to follow-up with those cases and put something in writing when it's found out to be a case of innocence.
They do not do this. Not often enough at least. So when people Google those names all they see are the initial headlines that 100% never look good. It's bullcrap. You'd think the press would want to fix shit like that. But they don't. The post your name along with a nasty little headline that can follow you forever

On the assumption the employer knows the full name. I was teaching at one school and a vp came up to me bc he couldn't find me on the state Registry for teacher certification under my name. Which I told him, that's bc I go by my middle name and the certification is under my first name (includes middle name, but gotta have 1st name in the search). He was shocked bc he thought the name I went by was my first name. All my students were like "we know, we're trying to figure it out too." after swearing him to secrecy, I typed my name on his search (out of sight from kids) to confirm I did in fact have current license to teach.

I have found folk who try to hide their criminal history. One was a guy who worked with a youth group and when we did a background check when they applied for a liquor license for a fund raiser we discovered that he had a conviction for sexual assualt on a minor in Oregon (we were in Colorado). Another was the husband of a lady who was requesting custody of her grand daughter. It turned out that he had served time in prison in Idaho for murder but had never told his current wife, the grandmother. That would have been an interesting conversation. If you have a criminal history, disclose it. It may not have any effect, particularly if you can show that you have turned your life around. I have seen folk who did some really dumb thing when they were young and got amaturity growth spurt later. And, unfortunately, there are some who do stupid stuff all their lives.

Some do. In my experience, it's always local shops and the "we are family" types of workplaces that will do a Facebook "background check" over an actual criminal background check. And in those environments, it's either you have to mesh 100% with whoever is doing that "check", or you're either not getting the job or you're only getting it to be the butt of people's jokes and used as an excuse for why other people won't get picked later. I worked for a coffee shop where the owner tried to do this kinda thing before I took over the hiring of candidates. I explained to him that we are a country that has freedom of speech and freedom of expression, and we are in a right to work state. We can only exclude candidates if they have a felony that conflicts with their desired position (ex. A convicted thief wouldnt be reliable as a cash handler). I got us set up to do proper criminal background checks and things went a lot smoother after that.

When I had my mechanic shop open, I did a background check on a guy I went to school with. I found an extreme amount of racist and homophobic posts/tweets. I immediately threw his application in the trash and explained to him why he wouldn't be a good fit at my shop. I could tell he wanted to call me a slur but he held it in until he left the building. The bad part is he and I were pretty good friends growing up and seeing those posts and tweets really put a bad taste in my mouth.
