- Had a great time at San Diego's premier gaming extravaganze. The San Diego Historical Miniature wargamers put the extra in extravaganza. Also played a really long game of a short game of Et Sans Resultat.
Jon, it was an absolute pleasure having you attend and getting a chance to meet you!!! You are correct, the San Diego Historical Miniature Wargamers meet Tuesday nights at Game Empire (although occasionally at other FLGS as well). We pride ourselves on playing a convention-worthy game every Tuesday and welcome anyone who wants to attend, we’ll gladly work you into our games! Thanks again for coming and the video!!!!
The pleasure was all mine. It's a rare event that I can sneak away for a full day like that, and you guys made every minute of it worthwhile. Would attend again. 12/10.
Space weirdos is worth a go. I like what you can do with measuring sticks and counters.
Great convention. Great seeing the support from the gaming community.
Good to hear you had a fun time. The "Et sans resultat" phrase is actually one half of a quote from Marshal Ney after the Battle of Eylau. - "Quel massacre, et sans resultat."
Excellent. This was my third visit to Advance! and yes, it just keeps getting better.
Easily the best show recap I've ever found on UA-cam. Great work.
You're too kind, but I'll take it!
Jon, it was a pleasure meeting you. I’m shocked that you think the Austrians had a plan. :)
Love me some ESR and their fantastic campaign books too.
You might be interested in ESR Series 3 which we released in 2022 - it moves all combat resolution to a division vs division contest (similar to how you experienced skirmishing in your game of 2nd Edition).
Both versions of ESR are fun :D
Now I am sad I sold my condo downtown SD..... Thanks Jon.
Great video. Your little clip of the Infinity room, I played Infinity before that 2020 thing and it's definitely a learning curve to play, but once you understand it, it's a very fun game. It's what you would call a Active/Reactive game. 1 turn has 2 phases...Active player...issues order, Reactive player can shoot if possible or react if the troops are closer. I've had some very fun games where it's come down to making that one last roll and you either get it or you don't. But I've also had some very bad games where I was going second (Reactive player) and got rolled, as in I lost my troops before Turn 2...that was rough.
ESR. It may have seemed like a challenging or tough game but once you learn the game, it actually works quite well, it's my go to Napoleonic era game as I like the size of it and the fact that both players are active and not the standard I Go U Go games. Judging by the QRS, looks like it was v2, which is fun for sure where as v3 is more streamlined. When compared to other Napoleonic era games, ESR plays at a larger scale, meaning that in ESR 1 base is a battalion, squadron or battery, where as in other systems you might need 4- 6 bases to make a battalion, squadron or battery. I'd give another go if the GM does one off games another venue and as long as you had fun, that's the main thing.
I understand that "Anthems of War" is a fantasy game that uses a lot of the same mechanics, and it is one I need to play with a live opponent. Like Force on Force, it is fun, but always feel like I'm doing something wrong. Not the game's fault. Just one of my admitted weaknesses.
@@TheJoyofWargaming Just think of it as a learning experience. With ESR, you gotta play it like chess...think a few turns ahead of what you want to do :D
Last time I was in game empire I was still working over 6 years ago. and I wasn't looking for miniatures. I only started minis about 2.5 yrs ago. I was on a bit of a lunch break.
As soon as I have some reliable transportation again, I will go over there and buy some proper minis from them.
Pair of Dice games is up in Vista. Mid day a 45-55 (from almost La Mesa,) minute drive. Rush hour? Nope. Never. Nope.
Now If they were giving away Ral Partha figures real cheap, yeah.
Probably.
ESR 3 fixes your issues with the combat. I play in 2mm with basing similar to yours. A corps per side with 3 divisions still produces a fine game.
It depends on what your taste is for the game, v2 the Artillery & Skirmish are more engaging as is the Combat, where as v3 it's more streamlined to make the game move faster. I prefer v2 over v3, but v3 is still fun too :D
Big beautiful Napoleon table.
Did anyone know you or recognize you?
It mostly didn't come up. But at the start of the day one of the guys from the con noticed me filming and asked if I was something called a ZillaBits. I took it as a compliment, but answered in the negative, and he pressed me saying that my voice sounded familiar. I admitted to being Mr. Wargaming and he HAD heard of the channel and even kindly said he was a fan. I'll take it!
Ah! Zilla Blitz! Yeah, you do sound like him lol. He does a lot of solo gaming on his channel. It was great having you at Advance! And I hope to see you next year so you can experience some more and different games.
were you playing 2e or 3e ESR rules?
@@seanmudge7546 I believe it was 3e, but don't quote me on that.
The more I play big napoleonic battles the more it seems that traffic control is a major issue. Can you concentrate the forces? Can the reserves arrive in time?
