Before people start fighting in the comments about Dollar Tree vs a regular grocery store, keep in mind a few things. Not everyone has easy access to a regular grocery store. Especially in rural areas, where the market is overpriced because the next closest one is a number of miles away. Also, people who are on a limited budget may have to choose between stores if they don't drive. Lugging bags into stores because you take the bus is not easy! So they go to the place that saves the most. (Food is not cheap at the dollar store, but cleaning supplies are!) And lastly, you are not required to use the dollar tree items, especially if you can get them cheaper somewhere else. Take the information and make it work for you!
Yep! I live in a very rural area of Arkansas, in the Boston Mountains and we have a Dollar Tree/Family Dollar and a DG. Walmart and the regular grocery stores are miles away.
A million percent this. I live in Oregon and lots of areas are rural (there are really only a handful of cities in this big state). There are so many towns that have only Dollar Store, Dollar General and/or a convenience market as part of a gas station. A lot of people are driving more than 30 minutes to get to a standard grocery store, and that's if they have a car.
Recipes look great- thanks for sharing! Tip with the lentils: be sure to sort and rinse them first. I can't tell you how many times I've found things in there that you don't want to eat; stones, bits of weeds, little clumps of dirt, or shriveled lentils. Especially if I get lentils from the dollar store it's a coin toss whether or not there'll be a stone. I put the lentils on a white dinner plate [much easier to see any sort of debris], just a thin layer, poke through then dump in a strainer. Then rinse. You'll thank me when someone doesn't break a tooth!

Hi. Thanks. Love Thai food. Admittedly, I do find that most Dollarama or Dollar Tree items have lots of sodium and/or sugar. (Albeit, Dollarama does have healthy Himalayan salt.) Also, I avoid white rice and white pasta (so, I end up with soups and stews). However, I did find a can of asparagus with 27% iron. And, some nuts with same amount of iron😃. Cashews on hand…? Hmmm👀. Will see if the bulk store has. Personally, I usually avoid adding sugar to savoury items, due largely to advanced ADHD. Sometimes, I do bake with raw and/or Stevia and/or raw honey. Thanks again. I appreciate. Peace🌬️🌤️.

@ yes. I'm aware. The idea was that you could save money on these items at Dollar Tree. This is frequently not true. In most instances, when you have a choice, Kroger, Food Lion, etc have canned beans for about .89. Tomato.99. Spices, .99
@@laurastephenson2516 It really depends where you live. Much like how this video shows that people in affluent areas have unusually fancy items in stock at their Dollar Tree, the same is true that the staple items in their regular supermarkets are more money. We went on vacation to a place in Florida once that was where I guess a lot of "snowbirds" fly down for the winter, and even the store brand canned beans were closer to $1.50 and this was before covid.
Great variety here. Thank you. You really should never store extra sauce from a can, (or any ingredient that comes in a can,) in its can. Metal can leach into the food and alter the taste and cause health problems. It’s best to store in glass containers that seal properly .
Great recipe suggestions! Glad I found the Pho sipping broth bags near me. Please keep in mind that it hasn’t been a “dollar store” for almost a year now, so the math might not math as it did before the price increase. It’s the Dollar (+.25) Tree. The frozen veggies are $1.25/bag, not “a dollar.” Those quarters do add up. Likewise, the lentils are not one pound anymore-they raised the price to $1.25, then reduced the amount of product by 4 ounces (only 12 oz./bag now). That difference would affect the nutritional value of the finished meals (i.e., less protein, less fiber, less micronutrients). And, yes, the freeze-dried fruit is so good!
Wash the lentils. Soak them in a tip of Baking Soda for at least an hour. Rinse, then add enough water to cover lentils, and crushed garlic. They cook in less time with this method
The next time I encounter someone who claims that people in food deserts can't eat a plant-based diet I will refer them to this video! Thank you so much
When I first became vegetarian in the 1970's there wss almost nothing ready made that I could eat so ive been batch cooking, portioning snd freezing almost all my own meals for more than 50 years. Even today most of my portions average 50 cents to $1
You can feed your family for $5 like this vs $5 at McDonald’s for one person if you are lucky. Don’t even get me started on the health benefits! Great vid!
I think the idea is that it can be feasible to make meals using dollar store finds by having spices and other stocked add ons that you may have in your arsenal. Just being creative and using what stuff you have on hand to maximize what you do buy.
@@VintageVegans Because I can relate to doing the same thing she’s done here. Taking less expensive ingredients and utilizing the add ons I have on hand to make meals.
I did not even know the Dollar Store had groceries at all lol. Also it's not safe to keep anything in the origonal tin can in the fridge once opened, my mother taught me. No more safe than not rinsing the bleach off the white rice.
I've been wondering about this. My mom also taught me not to store things in open tins. But now, the cans are plastic-lined. So does it matter? Regardless, I hate that dried, crusty ring that happens around the edge, so I don't store anything in the can, lol.
Ok live the recipes Miss, but my I say let’s not forget to check the beans for debris, stones etc and rinse them before you cook them. They come from the ground.

We went on vacation to a place in Florida once that was where I guess a lot of "snowbirds" fly down for the winter, and even the store brand canned beans were closer to $1.50 and this was before covid.

Do you not rinse the bagged lentils? I always do.
Na I dont
Nor did she pick through the lentils for possible pebbles, nor did she wash her rice before cooking it…😮
@@FunUrth4AllI've never rinsed mine, either, and nothing bad has ever happened to me for not doing so.

Great variety here. Thank you. You really should never store extra sauce from a can, (or any ingredient that comes in a can,) in its can. Metal can leach into the food and alter the taste and cause health problems. It’s best to store in glass containers that seal properly .
Good to know. Thank you!
Your son is so adorable. Great personality and very handsome
Great point. But I did only spend $22 for the 5 meals.
With the canned tomatoes, just stick a pair of scissors into the can and snip away to cut them down to petite size.
discovered channel tonight :) pleased
Sock lentils in water for at least four hours, wash it before cooking.
Wash rice before cooking.
Lentils do not need to be soaked at all.
Yay!
Awesome thanks for doing this so helpful will you do more of these or other grocery stores food lion, Lidl
That's a great idea! We LOVE Lidl! And Aldi.
Wash the lentils. Soak them in a tip of Baking Soda for at least an hour. Rinse, then add enough water to cover lentils, and crushed garlic. They cook in less time with this method
Our Dollar Trees don't have a refrigerated section - I've only seen one that had that.
Great video and crazy you found this food at dollar tree
I love this video. 😁
Thank you!
I use the sipping broth teabags to flavor rice noodles
The next time I encounter someone who claims that people in food deserts can't eat a plant-based diet I will refer them to this video! Thank you so much
Thank you!!!
When I first became vegetarian in the 1970's there wss almost nothing ready made that I could eat so ive been batch cooking, portioning snd freezing almost all my own meals for more than 50 years. Even today most of my portions average 50 cents to $1
That's amazing!! I'm so impressed.
You can feed your family for $5 like this vs $5 at McDonald’s for one person if you are lucky. Don’t even get me started on the health benefits! Great vid!
Yes, exactly! So true and so much healthier!!
I love your videos so much! They really keep me on track. And your kid’s reactions are priceless:)
Thank you!!
I make white bean chili because I can't eat cooked tomatoes. I prefer the flavor that way anyway.
$5??!! That’s amazing!
White rice is a treat struck me as funny. Did i hear that right? I've been 'gifted' white rice and am and always crave brown rice.
Yeah we always eat brown rice, and my kids get really excited when white rice is around.
Subbed 👍🏼
Real good cowboy 🤠
The cashews, better than bullion, and nooch really up the price of that fourth recipe (not found at Dollar Store).
I think the idea is that it can be feasible to make meals using dollar store finds by having spices and other stocked add ons that you may have in your arsenal. Just being creative and using what stuff you have on hand to maximize what you do buy.
@ why are you speaking for someone else?
@@VintageVegans Because I can relate to doing the same thing she’s done here. Taking less expensive ingredients and utilizing the add ons I have on hand to make meals.
@ congratulations I didn’t ask for your opinion
@@VintageVegans Yeah ok, go touch grass because your responses could also fit under giving an opinion without being asked.
💯 mark.
Feed four !? Feed max 2 in my house!
I have a teenage son which could eat all of this in one sitting and still be hungry. He's also super skinny and extremely active.

Thanks for the idea of chickpea alfredo sauce. I can’t have soy - no tofu which I love. Any idea what to use instead of soy sauce?
