  • I fly into the capital of Laos to see how much it's changed in the 10 years since my last visit.
    It's changed a lot!
    Instead of being a sleepy, backwater, place, Vientiane is buzzing to the same beat that Bangkok and Hanoi feels.
    I visit the main sights: Patuxai, Wat Sisaket, Black Stupa, Pha That Luang, Wat Si Muang, Buddha Park and the Mekong River.

    I was in Loas 1997. I spend almost 6 months there. The best time of my life. The food was outstanding, historic sites, the country side and the Mekong river was great!!

      Mustafa Baris you’ll love Vientiane. I think a lot of people skip it because they think there’s nothing there.

      cessnagbdso You reckon ? I think so too ..! One question for you : How about the Internet ? Is it pretty decent ? I am thinking about staying in Laos for at least 30 days , but I wouldn’t survive without a decent Internet as my job depends on it ..

      Mustafa Baris i has no issues with internet. I used roaming on my Indonesian SIM card. But you would buy a local sim when you arrive at the airport.

    Great video, I have always been interested in Vientiane but there are very few videos about it. The only this that I didn't like was the background music, it made me feel like I was in a videogame.

    Wow Mate! Thanks immensely for sharing this.....I go back 30 years to 1991 and I can't even believe what I am seeing here! The Freedom Monument was just a big stone block sitting in the middle......Roads were mostly mud paths and I can't even recall a decent eatery.....few bordellos were seen thrown around here and there but nothing that worrisome.....the Market was drab and rural.....But its all changed and how!! :O In Google images I see a big swanky Bus Stop some where around the Freedom Mon. - Way to Go!

      Glad you enjoyed it. And this was actually my second visit to Vientiane (first time in 2008) and I couldn’t believe the difference even in that time.

    Planning to visit. Is it easy enough to get a visa on arrival, or did you get visa before you travelled?

    • @JasonSmartTravel
      @JasonSmartTravel  5 років тому +1

      I got it on arrival. Make you sure have the correct cash (I think it was $50 or maybe $51). Someone didn't have the money and had to go back to the end of the line while after finding an ATM. I think I may have handed a passport photo or two over as well. I was handed an immigration form on the plane which saved time, too.

      It’s not big city, so I recommend you to walk or rend a bicycle or motorbike. Or the easiest one is by Tuk-Tuk (it’s an Auto Rickshaw), but it’s a bit expensive, depending on your bargaining.

    Never rent a motorbike or bicycle in Laos, especially in Vientiane. Failure to understand Laos' traffic laws and making mistakes will threaten to move to police headquarters. Then he asked for money and asked for $ 45. We continue to intimidate that we must go to the police headquarters if not provided. So I finally gave the police the money to leave the police. And another ten minutes later another police officer was arrested and fined $ 40. I think foreigners are just trying to eat rotten meat (illegal funds).
    Animal resemblance, it was like Haiana. I traveled to many countries, but it was the first time that police took money as they threatened to bargain for foreigners. The money I gave to the police for a few hours in the name of fines is actually about 50% of the average wage in Laos. I think the police in Laos are seriously wrong. This is what I experienced in May 2019.

      2 years ago I rode a bike around the city for a month. I llved 3 miles away.from the tourist areas. Rode at night.
      I am 70. No problems. Many others also rented. No problems. There might be more to your story.
