This is one of those "you had to be there" songs for me...the 60's were so tumultuous, that this song was like an oasis. I could be in the worst mood, and this song can turn me around on a dime - still to this day. I'm not a terribly spiritual person, but this song makes me feel like I am. Glad you reacted to it!

So sorry to hear about your brother. My brother, drafted in 68, is still going at 71, but when Tommy James and the Shondells came to our town, my Brotther and some of his friends went and partied all night with them. Since I was a couple years younger - of course, he wouldn't let me come, but I did get to see the show.

"Draggin the Line" should be listened to if you want to hear some contrast and is Tommy James' best IMO, but he and the band had a lot of good ones. I wasn't into him enough to buy albums, but this band made the radio worth listening to.

That whole album is trippy. This was Tommy James at the peak of his psychedelic experimentation. All of their stuff didn't sound like this but then everyone and their brother was doing this kind of music at that time. Their biggest hit from the album of course was the title track, "Crimson and Clover". If you haven't done that one you really should check it out. Joan Jett had a very 80s cover of it as well. Tommy James had lots of hits that kept on hitting. His song "Mony Mony" was covered by Billy Idol and made a hit again, then later, that version was parodied by Weird Al in the song "Alimony". On the same album Weird Al did a song called "I Think I'm a Clone Now" which was a parody of Tiffany's cover of Tommy's "I Think We're Alone Now". Other big hits of his were "Sweet Cherry Wine", "Hanky Panky", and "Draggin' The Line". Bottom line, if you don't go down this rabbit hole you at the very least have to try "Crimson and Clover" and it must be the album version because they edited out a lot of the cool guitar bits for the radio version.

Good instincts, Alex. Tommy James and the Shondells do have a bunch of different sounds. "Draggin' the Line" is a great tune with a very different sound, as is "Mony, Mony" (which was covered by Billy Idol in the '80s). "Crimson and Clover" is another one you must hear.

Gentleman this was born out of heart of the peace and love hippie movement of the late 60s. Not a song you particularly take to at first listen but it did have a way of working its way into your psyche over time. Quite the vibe. And yes it did crossover to R&B radio. "they'll be peace and good.. brotherhood".. "Crystal Blue persuasion." Ha!! Boy did we get that wrong!!

This song is perfect. If you missed the '60s you can't understand what it was like hearing this song blaring out of your radio in the Summer of 1969. Vietnam was raging and we had just buried MLK and RFK. But.. in 1969, the Mets were on a miracle playoff run, we were landing on the moon and Woodstock was right over the horizon. Suddenly everything felt different. This tune was part of the soundtrack to all of it. It was pretty damn magical. Still is.

  • @justineapril7922

"Crystal Blue Persuasion" is a song somewhat typical of the 60s in its musicality and its lyrics. I mean "love is the answer" and "peace and good, brotherhood" were sayings of cohesiveness that the 60s were trying to convey.
As a child of the 60s and 70s, I was exposed to soooo many songs of peace and love! I was convinced that "a new sun is rising" and the world was indeed gravitating toward unity. Boy, were we wrong!! It's a crying shame that love seems to be losing to isolation and separation. The world NEEDS more songs like this to remind us that LOVE is the purpose for existence. Once we accept that we ARE the personification of LOVE, we will spread that love into the world! ✌❤💙💛💜💚💖💞✌

You captured perfectly all our disappointment that the world didn't embrace peace and love as lyrics in the song "What the world needs now is love sweet love" implored us to do. I guess we were naive to think we could change human nature and society perhaps we did a little but seems like we're going backwards these days.

@@lindawulfkoenig4907 No. The rich and powerful squashed any hope of true freedom. Many, many sold out their hopes and dreams because they saw the futility of large scale change. I saw first hand what happened after the JFK, MLK and Robert Kennedy assassinations (among others) did to the psyche of the young people.
We can only hope to change ourselves. The powerful will always be in power, and that alone will not buy them peace and happiness. Only love will....

Donna Bruhn I lived in this period as a young man in my early 20s ( I am now 76 ). When I hear this song or " How Can I Be Sure?" by the Young Rascals or " Like To Get To Know You " by Spanky and Our Gang...and quite a few others - I get that feeling of nostalgia that takes me straight back there. There was a lot of music about love, peace, brotherhood in the late 60s. Yes, it was a tumultuous era as well, but the overall mood and vibe back then was positive and laid back. The 'atmosphere' today in America is rude, rough and hateful...with many of our elected leaders and politicians demonstrating the worst of those qualities.

@Penderyn Lewsyn of course slavery ended. It ended because people changed their thinking. But lets move ahead to a time more recent so you understand. In the mid 1950s things were much like it is now. I know, I was young then. There were literally whole state that had no people of color. Before television those white people could (and often did) live their whole life without meeting one black person. Most didn't hate black people they simply never thought of them. Those same people (who never witnessed the injustices of racism) still voted for people in their local, state and federal elections that changed the laws in the 1960s. Was it perfect? No. But it was better than before. Society is fluid and humanity is imperfect. When you live and love your own life (regardless of hardships) you affect those around you. You cannot force others to bend to your will, (for a time yes but it will snap at some point) but the you can affect true change by simply making your life the best you can make it. Not unlike a pebble in a pond. The pebble does nothing but effects of that pebble are great. If you live your best life, the effect will be much greater. Hate and force never affect permanent change only temporarily compliance.

My favorite of all his hit songs, which there were many, are this one. He was inspired by his reading of the book of Isaiah where it speaks of the Blue Shekinah Light which represented the presence of the Almighty God and the books of Isaiah and Revelation where it speaks of a bright future of a brotherhood of mankind living in peace and harmony. Wouldn't that be a treasure for mankind. The sound, instruments and words really shine in this gem. Crimson and Clover, Mony, Mony and I Think We're Alone Now are more great listening here.

we had been baddly used by parasitic off worlders for thousands of years and the waking up of the world happened in the 60s with the Hippy movement, and the taking back of our planet from the parasites began then IMO. Now that we are close to overthrowing the bastards they have tossed everything at us they can and the scamdemic is part of that. They are losing it despite the apparent upheavals cause by their freek out at being attacked. Thank you mr T and mr P and the White hat military and the off world help for puting us on the path to FREEDOM.

Their sound was/is all over the road. Songs by them are recognizable as being by them, but their "sound" evolved with the times in which they were recording (1964-1970-ish) new material. You've probably heard covers of several of their songs, done in the 80s and 90s.

I'm really glad you reacted to the album mix and not the single mix, which most reactors do. The single mix had horns dubbed onto the track following the key change, and to my ears it ruined the guitar-and-bongos hippie vibe of the arrangement. As others have mentioned, Crimson & Clover (album version) is their magnum opus and definitely the next one to check out. Other great songs include Ball Of Fire, Mony Mony, Sweet Cherry Wine, Sugar On Sunday and Draggin' The Line (which is actually a Tommy James solo record, but it was recorded soon after The Shondells' break-up and has that Shondells feel to it - and it always gets included in all the band's greatest hits compilations).

Fun story I heard about the first hit by Tommy James and the Shondells called Hanky Panky. It was really a piece of bubble gum rock (good bubble gum rock non-the-less) and Tommy James wasn't very impressed with it. He went away for the weekend and came back and found out that a radio statin had broken the record on radio over the weekend. Tommy James being embarrassed about the song asked if the record company could take his name off the recording. The response was 'ummmm it's a hit', to which Tommy James replied 'then could you make my name bigger on the recording'. They were huge in the mid to late '60's. Check out Crimson and Clover (studio version not the single version), Mony Mony (covered by Generation X), and Draggin' The Line, and I think We're Alone Now (far superior to the Tiffany version).
