The first time I listened to Surface Pressure from Disney's Encanto it was amazing! But after listening to it again I realized just how many elements Lin-Manuel Miranda was able to compose into this song and just how incredible of a performance Jessica Darrow gave.

My FAVOURITE part of this song is how DELICATE she is when she's adjusting Mirabel's glasses. Like, she's not JUST all brawn, she can still be delicate and careful and then IMMEDIATELY go 'Big sister' and moving to protect Mirabel from the falling dominoes.
I also like how mirabel under stands how she feels at the end_

Yeah, that is so good! I also like the part where she momentarily shows her vulnerability - "I'm pretty sure I'm worthless..." - and seemingly turns to Mirabel for emotional support. But as soon as she sees Mirabel, she bottles that away and refocuses on the threat, falling back into her role as "the strong one".
As someone with anxiety - this song is built like anxiety. everything that worries you is just there in the background all the tine and sometimes it get wore, sometimes it gets better. If you forget about it all and actually manage to escape like the 'but wait' section you start feeling happy, but it feels like you can't be happy for too long because something huge and worse than ever before will come along and stop it all. Puts you in a cycle of doubting yourself and your own happinness that you can't break out of.

wow! I never tought that a music could show feelings that deep
They put SO many layers of meaning, hidden and blatant, in this song that I keep finding new details all the time. For example, The part where Luisa is holding up the doors, and makes the comment that "A light wind blows" But that light wind is a tornado. She is so used to the pressure and struggle that her perspective what is a normal amount of pressure is skewed. That is very accurate to people with anxiety or live with stressful jobs or lives.
Another one is near the end, when the rocks keep falling onto her shoulders, for a moment, Mirabel is seen trying to help her hold them, and has to duck because it's too much for her.
And the last I will bring up here is the part where Luisa is hanging from the cliff, holding Mirabel, saying "See if she can hang on a little longer". Notice that her grip doesn't fail, the rock breaks. It signifies that she realizes that it doesn't matter how strong she is, sometimes her strength cannot solve the problem. And that terrifies her, because she feels like her strength is all she has, that she has nothing else to offer.
So many more details on how she is, such, a relatable and tragic character, but I won't put more of a wall of text than I already have.

She closes her eyes on 'If I could shake' 4:49. As far as I can see, she doesn't open then until after the words 'instead we measure' 5:50. I think the implication is that the whole section in between is her imagining what the lack of pressure would be like.
I like how at 2:50 in this video you get that very subtle “pressure” backing vocal that’s whispered to sound like percussion.
If you listen it's the word pressure... Also happens in the final chorus...

It's on every other beat in the chorus each time...
And there is also a lot going on with the music and the visuals.
Am I the only one who can set an emotion or set of emotions to each chorus of the song? The first chorus, she's nervous, scared to reveal her emotions. The second, she's angry, frustrated that she has to look after them without ever thinking of herself. There's a literal shot of her holding the world and later a shot of her lifting the house itself. Finally, the last chorus, she's almost resigned, strengthening her resolve and accepting the responsibility of "every family burden".
I have not seen this movie, yet. However, I'm looking forward to seeing it. 😸

My favourite part of this song it the ‘but wait’ line. The fact the music and vocals get all light and airy gives a double meaning to the lyrics; telling us to stop and WAIT, but also WEIGHT, with the airy tone expressing the idea of the weight being lifted off her shoulders and what that would feel like. Lin is just a damn genius.

People miss the visual metaphor
The donkeys everywhere representing that she almost feels like a Beast of Burden
Ya know this movie focuses on the toxicity in this family, when Luisa was hanging onto the tip of the mountain and fell, those pieces luisa took with her were the things rolling down the mountain. She was protecting mirabel from it as well as saying she is worrying that something is going to hurt them, when the thing that was going to hurt them would be when Luisa actually falls (when the pressure would one day overcome luisa).
I don't see anyone talking about that part at all. Curious what others think about it.

Have you heard the instrumental version of this song?? It’s a whole other experience without the lyrics. I noticed so much more about this song without the voice, it made me appreciate the original that much more!
I love how this song is how anxiety feels. It builds, builds, builds and when you feel like something's going to happen, there's nothing. So now you're expecting that build again, you know it's coming, you're waiting for that *pop* but again... nothing... and by time you get to the actual "explosion" of the song where there's no sudden quiet drop, it's almost like a breath of relief that the strain and wait is gone.
she didn’t have a door cause her gift was the whole house 💜 We don’t talk about Bruno passed let it go. I don’t care for frozen and never seen it. My daughter saw Encanto in her school and she loves it, so I just watched it Thursday.

Honestly I love it when Disney does an animated musical that has a moment of a character just opening up and saying something that's been on they're mind. Its sort of like a mini arc in way that not only develops the character but adds something to the story while also saying everyone has something under the surface of themselves. In fact the three songs that We don't talk about bruno, What else can I do, and Dos Oruguitas (which the translation is two little Caterpillars) kind a play on that where in We don't talk about bruno reveals that Dolores that she secretly has a crush on Mariano however she couldn't reveal it because he was betrothed to isabela. What else can I do revealed that Isabela didn't want to marry him and did not want to always grow flowers. And then Dos Oruguitas not only show Abuela's backstory but also kind a reveals why she puts pressure on the family a little bit from arranging Isabela to be married to someone who she doesn't want to marry to why Mirabel was subtly a bit jealous that she doesn't have a gift. That said like I said earlier I love it when Disney does an animated musical that has a moment like this. In fact this scene and the Abuela's backstory are probably tied with the flashback scene of hector remembering his daughter scene in Pixar's coco as the best modern Disney animated character mini arc.

You uploaded this on my birthday! One of my favorite parts, when she's in the pink cloud scene and sings, "This growing pressure," at "keeps going...", there's a subtle background chorus of "pressure, pressure, pressure" in growing octaves that gives the feeling of building pressure.
the pressure word in the supporting vocals is so lit!!
the smoothness of "your sisters older" i always took as something she hear a million times like it was drummed into her head so whenever she thinks of that line its ALWAYS said with that tone

visually one of my favorite things is her literally tearing up the surface of the earth as she goes into how she feels outside of what everyone sees
After the reference to Hercules, theres also a background vocal part that whispers "pressure".

I catch something new every time I listen to this song, it's wonderful, and I continue to be amazed at how every element of the song seems to serve her character, from that little wobble in the vocals on the line "3 ring circus," and how Jessica Darrow shapes her voice to match the lyrics (the Luisa "roundness" even seems to get extra round on "ball," to my ear), to the nearly constantly-rising tension that keeps getting denied any real release...
Also, this is more about the visuals than the music, but I'm thinking about it now so: during the final chorus, does the shift to more "zany" animation feel like a bit of an homage to the visuals in "Friend Like Me" to anyone else? Because I get major Genie vibes from Luisa in a couple of the shots, and there are some really interesting character comparisons there that have me wondering if it's intentional, given how purposeful every other element in this song seems to be

Look at her bracelets. They're just like the Genie's shackles in Aladdin, before he's freed. Her build is like his, and the visuals of the song are like Friend Like Me. The poor girl feels like she's a Genie-"poof, what do you need?". I.e., a slave in a sense.

It’s the fact that you can easily mirror yourself with luisa , everyone most certainly has felt pressure one way or another . Each in our own way , but it makes you feel not so alone in your feelings

A great detail i like a lot is that in some parts there is like a subtle vocal saying "pressure" and it's like you hear "psh" as the song progresses on the first time when she says "that'll never stop(pressure)", and the final part when the bridge ends, but no, it's "pressure" i just love it.
