    The end of Speedlink was the nadir of wagon load freight. Great to see again. I still run trains like these on my model railway as I think they represented everything that was great about the concept.

    I like how the driver of the 37 was wearing the flat cap and turned to the camera.....proper bo that is.

    Brilliant that. Can't believe how long that train being hauled by the single 31 was 👍

    Love seeing the old freight services. Don't suppose you've any shots of the roadrailers that were trialled in late 80s or early 90s. Based on 40ft tri axle trailers with the tops of the sides chamfered. Shown on tomorrows world or blue peter. Desperately trying to find images. Nice video.

    Shame we don't see such an eclectic mix of locos on the ECML anymore :-(
    The lack of electrically hauled freight on the route has always puzzled me. But this video proves it happened, even if only as a test!

      its strange that there is a lack of electric loco's around at the moment. when you think the 2 out of the 3 mainlines heading North are electrified with the 3rd on its way. The only significant electrics I remember in my time are the 90's and 91's. In the same time we have had 59, 60, 66, 67, 68 & 70 diesels out and about on every day duties.

      Surely the most efficient way of working it would be for diesel locos to work the trip movements in and out of (unelectrified) terminals and sidings, and have electric haulage between marshalling yards on the main line?

    • @Isochest
      @Isochest 5 років тому

      That is what the rest of Europe and elsewhere apart from the USA do. UK freight is strictly trainload and point to point. Network rail are loath to provide sidings and loops suitable for a switch of traction. I think hybrids like the class 88 and the 73 of old could loosen the "Diesels R Us" mentality by giving the best of both

      @@Isochest 73s are useless out with 3rd rail territory, low range fuel tanks and not very powerful engines in them plus they're 50/60 years old.

    As a non British national, can anyone tell me if any of these impressive locos are still in service?

      supafuckinmingster there are a handful of the diesel classes seen still in service, mainly with National Rail and DRS. The class 90 electric loco (seen being tested) is still in service both for freight and passenger duties.

    Lovely window in time - before mine!
    Why are so many of the trains so short? 2 3 5 wagons long?

      Speedlink was a wagonload freight service offered by railfreight distribution, so often dealing with smaller loads from relatively small businesses, for example a company might want to send 2 vans full of paper to crewe, but because no one else needs to send anything to crewe, the train only has the 2 paper wagons
      ive explained that dreadfully but hopefully that helps

    Can someone tell me what is a Speedlink? I only know it mixed freight, like you get in most European countries, are the freight wagons imported from somewhere?

    • @neildahlgaard-sigsworth3819
      @neildahlgaard-sigsworth3819 7 років тому

      CM Headbanger Speedlink was BR's brand name for wagonload freight services. It used airbraked wagons and ran to tight schedules, but like all wagonload services it was expensive to run, especially the local feeder services (called trip freights in the UK), which could have as few as 1 wagon in the train and would have to be run (or at least timetabled to run with the provision of loco and crew). The train seen around the 12:00 mark is exceptional as it would have carried a single load type from one supplier to one customer (in this case IIRC rolls of newsprint possibly for or from Italy) - it stop running around the turn of the century.

    More slow link than speed link, but interesting shots. Many thanks from Germany ! But the 31 were really powerful, i experienced it in 1977, when an intercity train stopped at Oxford, and the class 47 experienced troubles...then there came a 31 Diesel, roaring, but succesful to Paddington.

      3 years later and ill let you know a little something about the 31s. They're brilliant locos in my eyes, however performance wise, theyre not great. They're incredibly overweigh and quite gutless.

    And what the hell is the thinking behind that train with an electric loco, one passenger coach, a diesel loco, then a load of freight wagons??? Layout is odd to say the least.

      The test was done to test all aspects of the locomotive''s performance. One of the most important was the braking,both air,used to slow and stop the train and also the rheostatic or dynamic braking of the engine.

      *another thing worth noting about the consist is that the coach was in departmental livery; this was the livery British Railways used for test coaches/locos at the time. There would've most likely been staff in there monitoring the class 90s performance.
