Ah, whistling HST's and BR blue loco's and coaches. Great times, really great times, happy to have the memories of such interesting times. Thanks for recording them, when I couldn't.

Me and some school mates camped for a week at the north end at High Dyke, mostly steam in the summer of '63, but the Deltics had taken over from the A4's, happy memories revived, thanks for that.

7:35That's a good power to weight ratio, must be nearly 10000 hp available there! *Well, 9000

Enjoyed this video very much. Interesting to see the quantity of diesel power running under the wires in the late 80s.
So muxh has changed in 35 years (35 years! Was 1989 THAT long ago??)

You lucky devil, getting to see 47555 "The Commonwealth Spirit"! I must have been the only enthusiast in the 1980s, who never saw it! 3:10 in!

I remember you could drive along the old line and park just where you are filming from, did it many times, no problem, no hassle! Try it now!!

5:25I've only ever seen that once before, on a video at Birmingham New Street, and I've never seen it in real life!

@7:33 is that a normal HST with a class 91 on the back? I didn't think they ever ran a combination like that. Great footage by the way!

Yes,the 91s were used with HST sets in passenger service from May 1989 through to the summer of 1990.The TGS coaches on these sets were fitted with buffers at the guard's end and the power car used was one of the buffer fitted DVT modification ones.

@@avocet1989They shifted too, as the power car had to run too…originally, I think they were just going to idle to power the MK3s but they built up oil in the silencers so they ran them on power too….around 8000hp on the train! I remember riding one and it pulled away quickly!

Interesting footage. 1989 seems like yesterday but so much has changed since then. I had no idea 91s were working MK1 sets then. Any idea what those workings were and why ageing MK1s were used as opposed to aircon MK2/3s?

The MK1s were from the Intercity Special Trains division and were on Kings Cross to Carlisle day trips via the Settle line. The 91s worked the trains to and from Leeds with a class 47 doing the Carlisle leg. These coaches were fitted out to a very high standard and were very pleasant to travel on.When a 91 wasn't available for these workings 89001 was used or sometimes a 47 throughout.
