    1:08 Benefits of Pelleted Seed
    The very first thing I want to clear up is that pelleted seed is not the same as treated seed. Pelleted seeds are covered with organic clay so they're larger (easier to see and handle) and retain moisture better.
    The larger size of the seed is especially great because you don't need to thin anymore! People generally just scatter a bunch of carrot seeds and then thin out their plants after germination. With these, you can be much more intentional in the same way you are with larger seeds. This also makes things a lot more fun & easy for kids too!
    The white color of the clay makes it so much easier to see where your seeds are. Instead of getting lost in the soil, you can easily find what you've planted so you don't lose track.
    All of this means you're going to have better spacing with your carrots and save time (and heartbreak) by not having to thin. You can also buy exactly what you need.

    4:07 Our Carrots & Planting Pelleted Seeds
    This whole area was planted using pelleted seeds. We've harvested a ton already, but we still have quite a few growing. We have great spacing, and the plants are thriving.
    So let's look at actually planting some!
    This row has been prepped and is ready to go. I also have already sifted some soil to go down first and then again later. Because they're large, I can quickly and easily grab them (even when I drop them) and put them exactly where I should.
    I top things off with some finely sifted soil, and that's it! I'll turn on my irrigation and let it do its thing. I should have seedlings in 1-2 weeks!
    Carrots are notorious for being especially tricky, so I really love having them. I also have cauliflower seeds here. The Amazing variety is expensive, so that's why they're a great option for pelleted seeds.
    8:07 HARVEST
    These Romance carrots are looking fantastic! I've been harvesting carrots nonstop for weeks and weeks now, and I can't wait to hear how your next crop of carrots goes.

    I'm not in California but have been gardening in South Florida for the past 3 years or so. I love your videos because a lot of our planting times are similar. Plus I'm always on the lookout for heat-tolerant varieties. Attempting carrots again this year! Have had luck with almost everything else, but haven't gotten a lot of carrots to germinate.. yet!

    I love pelleted carrot seed and seed tape for carrots! There's a long standing family joke about carrots being the one thing I always struggle with while the rest of my garden is booming. However when I use pelleted seed or seed tape, my success rate goes way up.
    One other thing I've noticed: the pelleted seed seems to have a much longer shelf life.

    I am zone 10a and had just found your channel in the past month, since you are local to me I have been watching all your videos. Great stuff. I am a 2nd year gardener and not very successful . I blame the heat, This will be my first fall garden and was going to start cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and bunching onion today. I was wondering when to start my carrots outdoors , I grow in containers and have 4 2x3 raised beds with 2' 4x4 legs. I am 79 yrs young with a bad back and legs so I can't get down to ground level. I now will wait to get your pelleted seeds. GREAT TIMING.

    • @SanDiegoSeedCompany
      @SanDiegoSeedCompany  Рік тому

      Carrots are a great choice for raised beds. You can start them outside now, but you might have to use shade cloth if we get some hot days. The key is keeping the soil moist because the seedlings will die if they dry out
