- Fall means a lot of things for gardeners, and one of the most exciting is that it's time to plant some garlic! We're going to walk through EVERYTHING you need to know about growing this delicious crop.
Get your garlic: sandiegoseedco...
0:20 Intro
Garlic is so easy to grow, and it tastes SO MUCH better than what you get at the store, plus you can get different varieties and flavors. But you want to keep an eye out for some common mistakes.
0:51 Sourcing Garlic Seed & 3 Things To Keep In Mind
Right from the get-go, growing garlic is a little different than most other crops. The garlic seed that you plant is a garlic clove. You just break up your bulb, take a clove, and stick it in the ground! When it's ready to harvest, you can let it cure, and then use some in the kitchen and some in the garden.
Of course, you can buy garlic from the store and plant that. However, there are some cons to doing that. To start, it's just plain ol' garlic. You aren't going to get to have any of the fun and unique flavors. On top of that, it won't be certified disease-free. Also, there's no telling how fresh it is. It's possible that it was processed months ago and is starting to dehydrate (which harms germination rates).
3:25 Planting Garlic
Garlic is super easy to grow! It doesn't take up much room at all. This makes a great crop for everyone to grow, even balcony gardeners with just a few pots. All you need is good soil and moisture control. We plant it in full sun to get the largest bulbs possible.
Before you put your cloves in the ground, take a few minutes to prep the bed. I like to add some sifted compost on top, and this helps retain moisture as well as provide nutrients. As a root crop, you want to break up the soil a bit to create a planting area as well as give it room to grow. Simply stick it in with the pointy side up, and give it a good watering.
In 1-2 weeks, you will start to see some sprouts breaking the surface of the soil! If you have really poor soil, you can amend it with an organic liquid fertilizer like fish emulsion.
Watering & Harvesting
The soil should remain moist for the next several months until you turn off your irrigation about 6-8 weeks before you harvest. That dry period allows the papers to dry out, protecting the garlic from rotting out.
While small, garlic does need quite a long time to grow. These will grow from September all the way until July. Give it at least 240 days. A common mistake is that people harvest it too soon. When the leaves fall over and the plant looks like it's dying out, you DON'T WANT TO HARVEST. This is when you turn off the water and leave it for another several weeks.
The curing process is really important. You want to place your garlic in a well-ventilated area in the shade.
11:08 Vernalization
When you get your seed garlic, you want to place your garlic in the fridge for 30 to 60 days if you live in zones 9 or 10. This helps ensure the garlic will grow because you have signaled the change of season to the plant. This tricks the plant but is key to successfully growing garlic.

LOVE HOW YOU SO EASILY EXPLAIN GARDENING!! AND, I GOT A TSHIRT FROM YOU- GREAT GREAT SOFT COTTON- xox
Double thank you!
I got my garlic this week, it’s in my refrigerator waiting for Halloween! Thank you!
Woop! My favorite time to plant :)
On a side note: the name garlic comes from old germanic gar/ger/geir, which means 'spear' (yes, 'germans' are actually 'spear men'). The word 'lic' refers to the entire family such as the 'leek'. So 'garlic' is in fact 'spear leek'. Lic/leek/look is an old word for curl ( compare 'lock of hair).
So.... curled spear (?). ThT could refer to the scapes of the hardneck garlic, suggesting that was the kind most known to the northern europeans which makes sense as the hardneck do better in cold climates
Love the local growing advice on garlic. I have grown grocery store garlic with good success by using these methods. I might have to try some certified seed and experience the different flavors after watching this video!
I’m so excited to grow garlic! My family eats a head per week. Mine are chilling until December 12th here in central FL. I need that time to prep a new bed just for these tasty babies.
If you have an organic farm stand nearby that is the best place to buy garlic. Its already acclimated to your zone . No shipping cost and half the price of " Seed garlic " You can score great seed that way too. Find a beautiful heirloom tomato that you love , eat the tomato , but save some seed. Peppers , same thing just make sure they are fully ripe , anything that self pollinates is a pretty good bet.
So helpful! Thanks!
Received my garlic in the mail today! Put in the fridge until Halloween
Garlic planting time always sneaks up on me. Time to look for good garlic varieties for zone 5!
Ooo yum! Any picked out?
I am so excited, I just got my pre-ordered garlic seeds in the mail from you yesterday!
I love garlic. I am doing a few experiments with garlic in my garden this year.
Ooo. Sounds fun! What lessons have you learned in the past?
Shoot! Mine already sprouted! 🌱
I’m in Valencia, California
I have used supermarktet garlic for years. Never had any disease. Still, trying certified garlic this year as i found the storebought garlic to render small bulbs
Thanks for that. I love growing garlic! I noticed you didn’t remove that basal plate when you planted, that helps the garlic get started setting out its new roots.
Yes, great tip!
This was a lot of good information without spending 2 hours to hear it all. Thank you for that.
Is it hard to make garlic powder? It is my go-to many times and was curious if anyone on here could give me some information on that.
Thanks again for a super video---and can I tell you (this may sound stupid) how refreshing it was to watch someone present who is not totally marked up. You look so CLEAN. Jesus bless.
Thanks for watching!
Making your own garlic powder isn't too tough. You want to peel and slice your cloves. Then you can dehydrate it all (oven on low can work) and then just turn it into delicious powder with a blender or food processor
Ha my garlic was in my mailbox today! Thanks!
This video was shot in September and you were planting hardnecks in Zone 9/10. Had those bulbs already been vernalized? Do you do the 40 days in the refrigerator early enough to still plant in September?
you can also let two varieties of garlic go to scape and those scapes would be hopefully pollinated from both and you can start a brand new variety. Yes, you won't be able to eat at the first year, but the second year you grow it, you'll have that new variety
I am not a garlic expert but AFAIK there is no pollination in garlic. Those 'seeds' are bulbils that are clones of the mother plant. You can plant those (in the fall), they will grow into single cloves that once planted again in the fall, will grow to full bulbs
@@Ed19601 it's not as easy as what I said. watch the video growing garlic from true seed.
Ohhhhhh… something just clicked about the vernalization. I planted some garlic in the spring without putting them into the fridge. I set up the garden and had some garlic lying around and wanted to try it. Makes sense why they didn’t pop up now.
My garlic order came in today!!
Yep, got busy with deadlines at work and forgot to order my garlic.
There's still time for a few varieties!
This is the exact thing I was looking for. Im in Texas zone 8 our winter actually does get cold but not until December. Can I vernalize my hardnecks through November and plant them out in December?
Will have to wait till I can afford a glass greenhouse so I can keep the chipmunks from eating them!!!
Super useful info TY. I definitely don’t have space for such a long crop (balcony container garden) unless give up growing tomatoes but maybe someday 😅
Love every one of your videos!
QUESTION:
I always amend my soil in my raised beds, top with leaves, compost then cover them for the winter with tarps.
Is that ok for the garlic not to get any natural snow melt and rain till I uncover in the spring?
Thank You!
Are you running irrigation under that? Probably not since I imagine it would freeze. Garlic won't want to start growing until the spring because it stays dormant in the winter
Can I interplant a certain type of crop with garlic so that I don’t have to give up an entire bed? Maybe just a spring crop so it can dry out before harvest? Zone 6a.
Have you ever tried pickling or fermenting your scapes?
I haven't. I usually eat them too fast. Haha. Got a good recipe?
Yay!! Garlic 🧄 can't wait till it's available. Super excited 😊!
We've started shipping the pre-orders out!
Ours is waiting for Halloween in the refrigerator.
Thank you for these videos! I live here in San Diego and new to gardening so your videos are very helpful. Question: I just ordered some garlic seeds from your site. Will I still have time to refrigerate them and get them planted if I receive them soon? Is there a "too late" to plant them?
No, you should stick them in the fridge for around 40 days
This is my first year trying to grow garlic. I ordered some elephant garlic from Gurney's because I wanted to try something new and different in my cooking. Do you have any recommendations of how far apart to plant the cloves for this one? I'll have to remember you sell garlic and buy from you next year!
At least 6 inches
I've heard of people using yellow sulfur and that will kill off diseases. I'm not 100% sure. I think they use that also for potatoes
Did you soak yours? I live near you zone 9a. When do I plant? End of September? Can I grow it in an area that has sun now but will be shaded over for 3 months and then the sun will be over it full sun in March?
I planted my garlic before watching this video. I’m scared. 😂
I can't wait til my seeds from you arrive! Last year I grew garlic from both grocery store and seeds from my local nursery. Can I reuse the soil/compost from last year? Is there any way to inoculate the soil? Thank you.
You can use the soil so long as you don't have diseases. There are different ways to inoculate or sterilize soil, but that's generally not needed unless you had problems this past year
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany Thank you, Brijette! This is so helpful. No diseases, so I'm happy to be able to reuse the soil. I'm checking my mailbox every day and mentally getting ready to plant on Halloween, like you have shared before.
The straw blocks out the weeds, but is it okay to cover the garlic with it? Will it still sprout?
Yup! As long as it's not too thick, the garlic will pop right through
We are putting in a 100x100 "starter" bed to start garlic seed sale. Would love a list of labs for testing so we can be sure our seed we sell is certified. Still learning and gathering resources and would really love some input. Ps ❤ the tank top
Just went to your site and the Sicilian garlic is sold out (whaaa!) which of your other varieties would you recommend to have the best flavor? This will be my first year growing garlic ❤
Ah dang! Ivan packs a punch, Chesnok Red is really fun to use in the kitchen, and Red Toch is more middle of the road.
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany thank you! Next year I’ll be quicker on the Sicilian! Lol, excited to try those others this year tho 🥰
I grew some garlic once, leaves turned, pulled it out with one piece and a bunch of roots. Gave up garlic growing.
Bummer. Maybe give it another try this year!
I’m in zone 9a. I have my garlic in the refrigerator. If I plant in December, since we don’t get super cold winters will it start to grow? If so what happens if we get a frost in January to March? Will it die?
Thank you for your input
You can plant anytime from October through December. Mulch will regulate the soil temps well enough
I am in San Diego. I am fairly close to the coast. What varieties would you recommend for my area? Also, I have had a problem in the past with rust. Are there any varieties that are more resistant to rust? I would like to order some garlic from you but want to make sure I buy the best kind for my area. Thanks!
All the varieties we sell are great options for our zone (all our seeds are localized). Elephant can be more resistant: www2.ipm.ucanr.edu/agriculture/onion-and-garlic/Rust/
Do i have to regrigerate garlic before planting in fall? If so, how long? I am in SD
Yes, 30-60 days
I only have one raised bed. I planted carrot seeds and cilantro on the very end of one side. Can I plant garlic in the other end of do I need another Bed? It's 6ft long
Yup, that's totally fine! If you have irrigation set up, just be sure to turn off the water to the garlic in several months.
Awesome, thank you! All of my seeds are from your website! First year gardener as well! Thank you for making it so accessible
Thank you thank you thank you! Glad you're getting your hands dirty :)
Zone 9b, i did not put my cloves in the fridge, what's going to happen next year?
Vernalizing simulates winter and divides to bulbs. It's possible it will still get cold enough and grow as the temps rise in the spring.
Can garlic be planted in cold environments, like Canada?
Absolutely! It does great in cooler zones
are you guys still selling garlic seeds? Website says out of stock. is it seasonal?
Yes, garlic is available seasonally. That ensures the best quality from our side.
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany thanks ill be buying some soon!
My first attempt at garlic this year and it was on the small side. Zone 4. Think I need to build my soil. You recommend granular fertilizer, any recommendations? Also I love the brightly colored cloth in this video. Is it a sheet or towel or a shade cloth. Where can I get something like this? Just love the vivid colors.
This is the one I use: sandiegoseedcompany.com/product/tools-and-merchandise/darn-good-fertilizer/
That's a sheet/cloth made with our logo on it, but it's just a one-off. Maybe check out something like a sarong (and maybe you'll have to go on a tropical vacation to get one)
😋
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany thank you 🙏 just came across your channel this morn looking for recommended garlic tips techniques and now subscribed. Tropical vacation indeed. Much needed🙏😎
@@debraeckart9711 Glad to have you here! 😁
Where can I get the "straight out of compost" t-shirt 👕
Right here 😁 sandiegoseedcompany.com/product-category/tools-and-merchandise/page/3/
if u grow indoor will it stink?
No, not really especially if you only have a few plants. The leave do have a little smell, but you have to get really close or cut them
Thanks
Is it same with elephant garlic? I was gifted a lovely huge head of elephant garlic locally grown and I want to replant so I get more🌱💚
Yup! Plant away :)
a grow hoya? hows it supposed to be spelled? thanks
Olla, but the company we use is called GrowOya - growoya.com/
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany thank you
What would you recommend to plant with Garlic?
It's actually nice to have them on their own so you can turn off the water to just your garlic when the time comes
How long do you refrigerate the garlic, I'm in la mesa,ca. TYIA
30-60 days
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany thank you
I tried to buy some seeds and fertilizer, using my Shipeasy coupon but it didnt work😢, what can i do? I sent a mail, but didnt help me
Send us an email at info@sandiegoseedcompany.com
squirrels here dug up and ate all my garlic! what to do?
Dang! Something like chicken wire secured over the area can stop them
Eat the squirrels...they'll be nice and garlicy ;-)
What’s your favorite garlic type-flavor
Oh man. It's so hard to pick just one! Some are better raw, some are better for cooking, etc.
It’s been 3 years Ive tried to grow garlic and something lays eggs and the worms destroy my garlic. I can grow pretty much anything else except garlic :/
There are definitely some pests that attack garlic. Check out this info: gardenerspath.com/how-to/disease-and-pests/control-garlic-pests/
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany thank you!! I checked out the article and I’m pretty sure it’s leaf miners! We get a lot of snow so as soon as it’s gone in the spring I’m going to put a floating row cover over them
My garlic is twice the size as yours, you must be doing something wrong!
SMH. The age we live in when companies monetize their own, commercials. 🙄😒
Some wrong information, I've never seen anyone plant garlic so deep. You're supposed to let the tips poke out. Don't "work" the soil. Mulch always. etc. Does she repeat herself in order to drag the vid out so she can cram in another ad? Could have given plenty of info she left out, to accomplish the same goal, but wasting your time might be one of her goals, I dunno, but it seems...
I'm originally from San Diego. I now live in Los Angeles. Same planting Zone. Naturally, I checked out their products (years ago) and found their prices shocking. Abhorant, even. This comercial exemplifies a few reasons why the rest of the country hates Californians. Right now I hate Californians too.
I LOVE that shirt🎽. 'Straight outta Compost'❣️🌱💦🪨🦠💖 where can I get one?
