you say we shouldn't use level zero strikes but my dad playing MH2 only uses greatsword and he made it to G-rank without even knowing there was a level 3 charge.
I always come back to watch this to relearn and gain experience. I still play this! Thanks a bunch MH Sensei Gaijin Hunter for the informative lessons 🙂
While it's true that you end up sheathing a lot with the Greatsword, a common thought process I'm tired of seeing is people thinking that charging hits and sheathing is the *only way* to play Greatsword. The way you can weave in and out of attacks with evades makes the Greatsword a strong and surprisingly mobile weapon for up close and personal fights with monsters.
+The Tree's Apprentice Yes, GS can be as in the monsters face as SA. Throw on atleast evade2 and the ever present focus skills and you can bob and weave with a surprising amount of charges if you recognize the monsters patterns well enough. I like to GS brachy.
there's also the fact that charging the GS is a much faster animation when running to unsheathe rather than after it's sheathed it will swing the GS around, to hunter's shoulder then begin charge...
You're videos are super informative! I was playing online and one of the random people I was playing with recommended your stuff. So I looked it up and now I'm learning so much! Each tutorial has inspired me to use each weapon! Keep up the good work. o/
I love the detail you put into these guides, Gaijin. Thank you so much for these, they'll definitely help me choose my starting style and weapon! Either this, or I'll just test out everything. ;)
U provide such good information to us veterans and a new gen of MH addicts here in the west. thx to info videos and tutorials like your ones all of us get better at monster hunter. wanna say:Keep up the good work!
Thanks for doing these excellent videos. This is my first Monster Hunter and I had no idea there were any of these great moves. The start of the video where you said about someone just trying out the greatsword and pressing x, then a and thinking "hmm this is slow and clunky" - that was me.
Great Video Gajin! I absolutely love your vidoes, they're so detailed and in my eyes flawlessly presented. Out of curiosity, are you doing the tutorials in a specific order? Cause I've really wanted to see the revamps the gunlance got 😂
Nice guide Gaijin! Though a couple of things about Aerial Style GS that were not included in the video: 1. The Super Swipe does not disappear in the Normal Jump Attack. Just press A after the jump attack and you'll perform the Swipe depending on the level of your Jump attack which leads to... 2. The Normal Jump Attack can be charged in the Aerial Style. Just Hold X during the Jump Attack. Do bear in mind though that getting a level three charge is hard since most of the terrain to jump off from is too low. 3. Lastly, a tip for killing sleeping monsters. Place a large barrel bomb and jump from it and start your Aerial Lvl 3 charge. The Aerial dodge wakes the monster up and negates your opportunity to deal a lot of damage. If you do not have bombs, then press start and press X to ping your palicos. This orders them to stand near a monster allowing you to jump off from them instead and perform a lvl 3 aerial charge. Or you could just Brimstone. LUL Hope this helps Aerial GS players out there :)
I've always been fond of the GS. The charge attacks were cool and the super swipe really felt like it had some weight and power behind it. It was just so satisfying to follow up a level 3 with it! And then when Aerial came out I was in heaven. Bouncing off the monster, bringing the level 3 down and then super swiping it just has always felt so completely satisfying. I felt as though I was really doing the damage that a greatsword should do! Something else I loved was that you could infinitely chain the normal attacks, and I was a little surprised you didn't demonstrate that. High slash, low slash, high slash, low slash, ad infinitum. A great way to just unload on a beast and the damage adds up quickly! Anyway, great tutorial, Gaijin Hunter!
Liking all the videos so far, I'm probably going to carry on using Dual Blades as my main, but it's nice to see what the other weapons can do, Tempted to focus on adept style, but I want to see how they work with aerial first.
This is the first MH game I've played long enough to get to high rank, and I just got there and hit a major wall. But you quickly pointed out that I was doing about everything wrong. Thanks for the help.
...Sytle. Heh. You misspelt it not once, but FOUR times, and all on a single screen, lol. Very informative though, I just got the Gen demo from the E3 Humble Bundle, and I have no idea what weapon or style to go. I'm sure I'll figure it out, though. Keep up the good work!
gaijin your voice has really improved compared to your earlier videos. You speak with a lot more confidence and energy. It's really nice to hear or see in my oppinion.
Love the tutorials now that they're more relevant! I used watch them to bide my sadness at the possibility of never getting the game! Nevertheless, great work,GH!
The added styles are really helping round out the number of weapons I want to use. In MH4U I could only really make the Insect Glaive work, and more recently the Bow. But damn, that Aerial Greatsword looks like exactly what I want out of a weapon.
I will never use the Great Sword just because it's too slow, but it's nice to see how badly I was using it when I tried, thanks for demonstrating what to do! Might give it a go
+MMD I just took the risk and bought a 3DS when the N3DS came out, one of the better decisions i have made. If you enjoy MH its a well worth investment.
and this is the level 2 and here's the level 3 here's the level 1 and this is the level 2 and this is the level 3 this is the level 1 and here's the level 2 and here is the level 3 and this is the level 1 and here is the level 2
Thanks for the tutorials, they're all excellent. Could you leave the motion values on screen for a second or so longer though? I miss them while looking at the animations and have to backup the video a couple seconds.
I was stuck on the double hellblade glavenus quest, and I usually use guild great sword but that wasn't working, so after a few days of screaming and spitting on my 3ds I watched the video you made about using adept against him, well.. I just beat it with no deaths and plenty of time to spare, so thanks, you saved my ass again
I still can't believe they chose to call it the "Adept Style." Fuck that, Bushido sounds 10x cooler. On top of that, we're not just some "Adept" hunters, we're god damn masters. We've slain every monster to fuckin date, and stylishly too.
I'm curious if, in adept style, the strong charge gains benefit from 'focus'. Speaking of focus, does it affect Brimestone Charge? Thanks for the fantastic videos. Keep up the wicked work.
I just tried out Adept Great Sword in the demo, and holy hell, it's a lot of fun. Normally I enjoy weapons that keep me agile, and my favorites are the LS, SnS, DB, Hammer, SA, CB, IG, and Bow. Thanks to Adept Great Sword, I can continue more along that same level of agility that I'd missed out on, so I'll probably use it a lot more when the main game comes out.
It's the same with me, used to love SnS for the freedom of it, and now I finally get a turn in the limelight with SnS supposedly being OP in this game, but the adept GS is just too fun lol!
Striker: The Super Swipe was what made the GS absolutely OP in 4U. The damage potential, burst, and ease of use made the weapon ridiculous. I dunno how Striker style would make up for it unless Brimstone Charge is really low CD. Low CD Inner Beast would help too since this seems to return to a pure hit-and-run style. Aerial: This seems like it has the highest damage potential. Not only does it allow for a more aggressive charging game-play (since you're less likely to get hit in the air) but the charge seems A LOT faster. You can also Super Swipe right from the first charge attack, meaning the amount of Charge > Super Swipe you can do in a given time should be much higher than the other styles. Also, it seems like the charging time is linked to your airborne time, meaning that Focus might do nothing, freeing up an Armor Skill slot. The downside is that it seems like it would be hard to aim for weak-points, which is suppose to be one of the GS's bread and butter. Adept: The fact that you have to do an evade in order to do the Super Charge seems like it might really limit the damage potential. I can see how it might work though.
Aerial GS is a spam show but an exciting one. Play long and the fight itself becomes a show rather than spam. The Aerial jump is foremost a dodge. So each aerial fight is more about countering than just lucky jump mounting. It is possible as well to control wear the slash lands with some accuracy. I destroy alastros using this style especially.
For adept/bushido style, the fast strong charge is actually ridiculously powerful by experience, since the usual flinch it causes often guarantees to link with the super swipe for great damage.
+blackneko blacksmith ikr... I personally also use ground slash as my hunter art, and if I flinch the monster with the charge hit or side swipe, the side swipe can go instantly into ground slash, and nothing beats the satisfaction from landing every hit in that combo... upward strike, lv 3 charge slam, side swipe, ground slash, then the shockwave... glorious.
You dont have to pull back on the circle pad for super charge... you can hold the circle pad forward too, thats how i do it, because then you can aim it
In the video he mentions the skills Focus, Crit Draw and Fast sheathe. And he usually does this for all the weapons, recommending certain skills. Isn't that enough?
Can we cut Velociprey in half with an Inner Beast-buffed Brimstone Charge? I'd like that. A lot. Or, you know, just deleting 3/4ths of a monster's health bar. That's cool too.
Hang on, does that Greatsword you're using have a hinge in the middle of the blade? One that folds *backwards, **_away_* from whatever you're hitting? That would just fold shut again when you hit anything! I mean, I've 'mained' GS for a long time but most if not all of the ones I've ever used were just slung onto your back when not in use. Also I assumed the kick was at least partly for knocking allies out of Snow/Mud/Web balls & Sleep etc? I'll have to experiment further with that...
i just started playing this game and was wondering what would be the best armor for great sword user in low rank??? and best for high rank if anybody can answer it would be greatly appreciated
I've always been super interested and wanted to know the inner workings of more with Brimstone Charge. Worth using that counter bonus or is it fine to use in a situation where the monster is helpless just as well? And also with Adept style for this weapon, the bonuses of adept should be something that compliments your fighting ability, not replace. Am I right? ;p
+gaijin hunter When I first played mh I misjudged the greatsword due to its general lack of speed and mobility. I began going to moga woods to experiment with it and of course the great jaggi was my guinea pig. I learned the two key factors which by my experience were the draw attack and the greatsword's unlimited combo possibilities. I normally only used charged slashes on downed/sleeping/stunned/paralyzed monsters or certain Elder dragons such as Ceadeus or Jhen Mohran. The greatsword since I played MHTri has been my go-to weapon. My brother prefers hammers. He's also a skilled gunner. Me and bowguns... well... let's just say that after several ruined rathalos hunts we didn't exactly see eye to... barrel. The bow however would be great for me since it's a bit more blademaster friendly. BTW was the ML001: Baltzenger foreshadowing the gunlance?
+gaijin hunter what armor were you using that had focus, crit draw, and fast sheath? Also, because of this tutorial, I'm so gonna main the hell outta striker and bushido with the greatsword. Beware the almighty Brimstone Slash and it's epic anime awesomeness!
Aerial might look repetitive but its actually a very fast way to do decent damage and since you,re mid air for most of it odds are you're going to be able to land hits you wouldnt otherwise. Been using it with the snowlord lagombi set and the damage is quite serious, not to mention the mounting power you also get out of it.
Hey, Gaijin, when you were doing motion values for the charges 1-3 you listed them as 65*1.1, 80*1.2 and 100*1.3. Would that be the same as listing them as 71.5, 96 and 130 for each? On a side note, are you going to do another video for how damage works for MHX, or would the MH4U tutorial basically cover all the same stuff?
+Happy Player Motion Values are the percentage of your Raw that is used in damage calculation. So a MV of 50 would be the same as saying 50% of your Raw.
I love the fact that each GS Hunting art is Basically a power-up version of GS's Basic move input. Brimstone = X , Inner Beast = A and Ground Wave = X+A. If in future games we get more Hunter arts i'd love to see maybe a Super Kick or Super Slap! Just for Shenanigans!
you are kidding right? the bow hardly had anything changed and it only has 3 attacks, charged attack, and the fact each bow has power shot and arc shot....and thats it. i heard something about heavy shot types, but shot types just orient what distance you shoot your bow from the monster.
I've been using LG such a long time then I got into LBG and HVB. Then when MH4U came out and introduced the Insect Glaive and the Charge Blade I used more of the Insect Glaive. Then MHGU and MGUXX I used the GS a lot then I used SA and HH as my secondary weapons. Great Sword ended up being my favorite weapons throughout the games mostly because I didn't have time I actually went back the previous games and used the great sword. My least favorite weapons are Lance, Hammer, Dual blades, and sword + shield. I still use the gunlance and bow in most occasions.
Hey, Gaijin? I've checked everywhere, but can't find anything, so I'm coming to you in a last ditch effort. Your audio for Monster Hunter Generations sounds so good, but for some reason, it sounds pretty bad on my capture. Like it's too much bass with little to no treble. It means that I can barely hear anything. Do you have a capture card from Katsukity? What is your setup? EDIT: You know what? I just saw your video, and it showed everything I needed to know. Sorry about that.
You can also combo a Normal Charge after a Wide Slash Quick note: If it get's risky to charge to level 3 don't hesitate to release at level 1 or 2, with enough time to release the charge and roll away. *He/she who rolls away in time lives to strike again* . Only pros can predict the monster to set-up level 3 charges all the time without the monster being downed or something. There's no shame on spamming Draw Attack until you have a save and big enough opening. Also, consider that, unlike with the Draw Attack, after releasing a charge there's a very short animation lock (shorter than after a Super Swipe) where you can't roll away. That's way the Draw Attack will always be safer.
I wasn't going to watch these because it was Japan exclusive, now I'm pumped for Mon Hun Generations ;D Is this new 3DS only? or will old 3DS's run it?
The whole point of the greatsword is to get crit draw and do the basic charge slash. If you do all this kicking and slapping, you'll crit on that instead of the important strike. You do more damage in less time, and get out before getting comboed.
when i first started playing monster hunter in monster hunter 3 ultimate i thought holding down the great sword's charge until it let go itself was the strongest slash possible but i only learned that it was stronger whenever i made myself a deviljho great sword and it had the pulsing animation whenever the level 3 charge came into effect
I'm positive gaijin knows by now, but for anyone new, you can actually charge a LV3 chop WHILE YOU'RE RUNNING in adept style, and still do the strong one afterwards, too. You can also delay charging it if you need to run a further distance to reach the monster, and still start a charge kind of late to extend your running distance.
Are crit and punish draw in this game cuz I've got a decent idea for a bushido set Also, if you evade and then draw into the bushido upswing it still gets the bonus from a draw attack, right?
Lol, I read your reply before I read the name of the one you replied to... "I have steel balls and you are also correct about the draw." XD I thought, "Gaijin!! That's not like you at all!! I thought you were a nice boy!" Lol. Peace.
GH says to pull back on the circle pad for the super charge, you don't have to do this. Just holding forward + A will do the super charge after the side slap.
I was playing the monster hunter gen demo, and I was in striker style soloing a malfestio. I used brimstone slash, because I thought it was inner demon or whatever it's called, and then I hit the Malfestio with it and killed it. It was awesome
the adept style strong charge after the evade>upswing allows for overcharging right? i just realized i've been charging it for 4 levels this entire time thinking it was stronger than 3 charges, but after seeing this video it just releases as a lvl 3..
Gaijin-san, I noticed something, but it might be just my feeling/imagination. Is striker style has innate focus? Im studying GS right now and so far, still using Guild and Adept. For the normal 3 charge, it seems striker style is faster than the other styles (except aerial)......... note : even when using Black S armor set with focus, it still feels faster. So i think it stacks.
Does anyone know the specifics of getting the black gear from the sword in Pokke? I want to craft the HR version but Can't seem to mine it even with 2 elder dragon bones. Is their a quest requirement first? I can just speak to the Nyanta in the cave but I'm having a real hard time trying to translate the text.
+MD5LKTR I believe that there is a quest requirement. However, you must also know that you can only mine once per a completion of a quest. I really couldn't bother reading any text since most of the text in any MH game is pointless and very long..
Striker Style- 7:01
Aerial Style- 7:32
Adept Style- 8:54
Arts- 9:57
Style Comparison- 11:53

Thanks
Give this man a thumbs up!
very helpful for watching multiple times lol
Thank u ur a good man
you say we shouldn't use level zero strikes but my dad playing MH2 only uses greatsword and he made it to G-rank without even knowing there was a level 3 charge.
Awesome ;)
+gaijin hunter can we get a dual blade tutorial
+Jason Liu You can get to G rank with kicking monsters to death, doesn't mean you should, your dad's a noob.
Sinister Seph
dude, insulting peoples parents is not cool. Be nice
+Merrroco technically, his dad must be an old-type player (plays the really older version)
have I been overcharging my gs the whole time?
Yep
LOOOOOOOL
i know how it feels...
+Igor silva Did the same thing playing the series for the first time in Tri too.
i played the entirety of mh3 and 3g undercharging my GS, i thought u started on lvl1 and lvl 2 was 3. felt awful when i realized it.
I always come back to watch this to relearn and gain experience. I still play this! Thanks a bunch MH Sensei Gaijin Hunter for the informative lessons 🙂
Haha, same here

Aerial Style's Jumping Draw attack...thanks Smash Bros, now all I can hear when I see that is "BACK SLASH BACK SLASH BACK SLASH".
+Sajin Shasaya This is the Sedition's power!
gonna so name my guy monado boy lool
+Sajin Shasaya you're really felling it, aren't you?
The question remains though. Are you really feeling it?!?

Nice guide Gaijin! Though a couple of things about Aerial Style GS that were not included in the video:
LUL
Hope this helps Aerial GS players out there :)

Aaaah GS. My main Weapon in MH on PS2 when all you could do was just whack away at the Monsters, no charge or anything. Good times.
+NeverenCH didn't play any MH game since the PS2, even though it's one of my favorite titles.
Still waiting for a console version..

A real console.

otherwise great video as always ^-^
italy???! mhx
Impressive as always. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the tutorials, they're all excellent. Could you leave the motion values on screen for a second or so longer though? I miss them while looking at the animations and have to backup the video a couple seconds.

that mhfu track going on in the background kinda brings back memories. Almost brought a tear to mah eye.
Can't wait for that HBG guide!
A helpful tutorial as always!
Great tuto! Waiting for CB! :D
Im looking forward to your bow guide!
Oh my god so much nostalgia from the pokke music

Seriously. They could have atleast changed it to Evade Style. What does Adept Style even mean?!
For me it sound very strange but it has a reason because one of the famouse rappers in germany is called bushido haha
+Brian Metcalf
What does Adept style mean? It means to be good at some task. They're actually complimenting hunters that use this style.
but there are some japan exclusive monsters
I'm curious if, in adept style, the strong charge gains benefit from 'focus'. Speaking of focus, does it affect Brimestone Charge?

You dont have to pull back on the circle pad for super charge... you can hold the circle pad forward too, thats how i do it, because then you can aim it

ground wave = Getsuga Tenshō
have you ever considered adding a "good armor skills" section?
In the video he mentions the skills Focus, Crit Draw and Fast sheathe. And he usually does this for all the weapons, recommending certain skills. Isn't that enough?
+improvcomedy14 He did in this video but I'm not sure he did in any other video. Just thought a subheading would be good.
Can we cut Velociprey in half with an Inner Beast-buffed Brimstone Charge?
I'd like that.
A lot.
Or, you know, just deleting 3/4ths of a monster's health bar. That's cool too.
we need this *_*
just imagije that while sleep bombing.... pffff!!!! behold our
ovewhelming power!!!
+Joachim Von Grimorium if randoms online actually know to not attack the monster when it's been put to sleep
+InsomniacMatt thats why you play with friends or look for mojster hunter groups on fb, for example xD
Velociprey "mutilate" glitch has been removed since 4U, so no...
the goat's back!

EPIC WHIFF
**Goat scream**
great intro statement. loved it
Hang on, does that Greatsword you're using have a hinge in the middle of the blade? One that folds *backwards, **_away_* from whatever you're hitting? That would just fold shut again when you hit anything! I mean, I've 'mained' GS for a long time but most if not all of the ones I've ever used were just slung onto your back when not in use.
Also I assumed the kick was at least partly for knocking allies out of Snow/Mud/Web balls & Sleep etc? I'll have to experiment further with that...
+Fors Clavigera It would not fold back when you hit something. Think ot would be like a gunlance and that the hinge locks when its being swung.
dude you're like the bob ross of monster hunter i love you
+Dronto Ottrond thank you ^^
love the Pokke theme in the background
i just started playing this game and was wondering what would be the best armor for great sword user in low rank??? and best for high rank if anybody can answer it would be greatly appreciated
Am I right? ;p
even thougb monster hunter has all these styles, the game seems pretty balanced nice work
+gaijin hunter When I first played mh I misjudged the greatsword due to its general lack of speed and mobility.
+BenaSPACE yes for first q and no I wont do a new video it's the same
+gaijin hunter is it 50% dmg or 500% damage for 50 motion value?
+Happy Player Motion Values are the percentage of your Raw that is used in damage calculation. So a MV of 50 would be the same as saying 50% of your Raw.
I knew all but was it % or something Else
You can do the Strong Charge by holding any direction on the circle pad, not just back.
OMG that'd be amazing!
+gaijin hunter you should make a new hashtag for this!^^ XD
The weapon that needs a tutorial the most given the changes is probably the bow.
*Gunlance
shotgun stick, seriously it's more complex now the type of shot, hunter style, hunting arts and the mechanics of the heat gauge
you are kidding right? the bow hardly had anything changed and it only has 3 attacks, charged attack, and the fact each bow has power shot and arc shot....and thats it.
i heard something about heavy shot types, but shot types just orient what distance you shoot your bow from the monster.
It's so confusing to learn from the hunters notes
What is the armor set being shown with this? The really cool gray one.
Looks like silver rathalos. It's 2020, you probably knew this alread. Lmao
@@justtry8552 that is great to know especially Sence I’ve just started playing regular gerneration on my 3ds
how does the charge level affect element damage?
i hope all this is included in MHW, or even better new skills. Thanks, its a great video.
@11:50 i cried so hard at that yodel XD
it came out of nowhereeeeee
I've been using LG such a long time then I got into LBG and HVB. Then when MH4U came out and introduced the Insect Glaive and the Charge Blade I used more of the Insect Glaive. Then MHGU and MGUXX I used the GS a lot then I used SA and HH as my secondary weapons. Great Sword ended up being my favorite weapons throughout the games mostly because I didn't have time I actually went back the previous games and used the great sword. My least favorite weapons are Lance, Hammer, Dual blades, and sword + shield. I still use the gunlance and bow in most occasions.
At then end you misspelled all the Style words as "Sytle"
Great video by the way!
You can also combo a Normal Charge after a Wide Slash
Quick note: If it get's risky to charge to level 3 don't hesitate to release at level 1 or 2, with enough time to release the charge and roll away.
I wasn't going to watch these because it was Japan exclusive, now I'm pumped for Mon Hun Generations ;D
Is this new 3DS only? or will old 3DS's run it?
Old 3DS is fine.
Guild Style: 0:42
Striker Style: 7:02
Aerial Style: 7:32
Adept Style: 8:53
..................................
Hunter Art: Inner Beast: 10:04
Ground Wave: 10:45
Brimstone Charge: 11:10
Final Thoughts: 11:54
The whole point of the greatsword is to get crit draw and do the basic charge slash. If you do all this kicking and slapping, you'll crit on that instead of the important strike. You do more damage in less time, and get out before getting comboed.
when i first started playing monster hunter in monster hunter 3 ultimate i thought holding down the great sword's charge until it let go itself was the strongest slash possible but i only learned that it was stronger whenever i made myself a deviljho great sword and it had the pulsing animation whenever the level 3 charge came into effect
omg ive always thought that it is a level 4 strike. thanks for the info
This is the X video me mentioned that in the changes section on the XX video
That was added in Generations Ultimate, and not present in the base Generations.
Are crit and punish draw in this game cuz I've got a decent idea for a bushido set
Also, if you evade and then draw into the bushido upswing it still gets the bonus from a draw attack, right?
+I have steel balls yes and you are also
Correct about the draw
even the charged attack after the bushido upswing have the crit bonus?
Lol, I read your reply before I read the name of the one you replied to... "I have steel balls and you are also correct about the draw." XD I thought, "Gaijin!! That's not like you at all!! I thought you were a nice boy!" Lol. Peace.
will u be running on your steel balls?
Waiting for Hammer and Bow tutorial :)
"...what's your *sytle*-??"
Hah, cant wait to combine the inner beast move with brimstone charge.
No mercy for any monster
+mushroom310
To my knowledge the arts can't crit. If that's true, pick up that worn greatsword or Uka weapon for maximum firepower.
GH says to pull back on the circle pad for the super charge, you don't have to do this. Just holding forward + A will do the super charge after the side slap.
I'm falling hard into MHGU. It's actually super fun when you get to the cool monsters which can sadly take a little while.
I was playing the monster hunter gen demo, and I was in striker style soloing a malfestio. I used brimstone slash, because I thought it was inner demon or whatever it's called, and then I hit the Malfestio with it and killed it. It was awesome
i use to hate the great sword but with the adept style added its the best weapon for me now, next to the long sword
the adept style strong charge after the evade>upswing allows for overcharging right? i just realized i've been charging it for 4 levels this entire time thinking it was stronger than 3 charges, but after seeing this video it just releases as a lvl 3..
So i think it stacks.
wow I've been overcharging so much. this comes in handy when they start to flee and you find them sleeping
I wonder, can you use the inner beast damage bonus with the brimstone charge, or is it normal attacks only?
they both synergise with one another.
Inner Beast [Lion] boosts ALL your attacks, including the Arts. For normal attacks though, you just wanna try to use the draw attack.
