  • Announced on January 7th, 1999 by Resident Evil 2 co p-producer Yoshiki Okamoto, the N64 version was announced to have been part of a 4 title exclusivity deal with Capcom and Nintendo, which would span the Nintendo 64 and Nintendo Dolphin (later released as GameCube). These titles included this port of Resident Evil 2, an exclusive prequel for Nintendo 64 (later cancelled and moved to GameCube), an exclusive remake of the original game for GameCube and an exclusive sequel for GameCube (later released as RE4, and eventually its exclusivity was ended and ported to PS2 and PC).
This port is vastly different from the other versions, allowing for smoother graphics using an expansion pak, Item Randomizer so that replay value can be increased, Violence Controller so that certain blood effects could be turned off, and more. It also featured exclusive "EX FILES" that lead into Resident Evil Zero, which was intended to launch the following year on Nintendo 64, but was later released in 2003 on the GameCube instead. As well as notes leading on to Code Veronica.
As well as different outfits for Leon and Claire.
Development of the port was handled by Rockstar Games San Diego (Then known as Angel Studios), under a deal with Capcom. Development of the port was said to be a "Challenge", as the team had to compress over 1GB worth of content to fit on a single 64MB cart. This was done using a special compression tool, and all sounds and CG movies were compressed to the lowest possible quality acceptable. This proved to be a technical feat, which impressed not only Capcom, but Nintendo as well.
Exclusive features for the 64 version include:
Higher Resolution graphics (Ram Expansion Pak required)
Item Randomizer which can randomize locations of Zombies, Notes, Keys and Items.
Violence Control meter which could add more blood, less blood, or no blood.
Blood Colour option to allow different colours (To reduce kids on 64 seeing it)
Bonus files intended to reference the cancelled Nintendo 64 version of Resident Evil Zero.
Interestingly, this port is the only one to feature exclusive features, despite the N64's cartridges being significantly smaller in storage capacity than the optical discs used for other versions.

Not going trying to spoil anything, but the N64 version is trying to be the director's cut of PS1 version. You lose the battle mode and some stuff was altered in a way to reuse it for both characters, but you get extra files that explain what's been going on in more detail, different alternate costumes for Leon and Claire, and an arranged mode. I kind of feel like they should have included those files in the remake along with all the special costumes from both versions, but that's just me. On that note, the same deal applies about getting to the police station without picking anything up even if you haven't gotten the ranks needed for the other rewards. Worth checking out on Leon at the very least, but I can't remember what Claire gets.

Oh yeah, I've seen some bits off stream and videos. The play through before this, I did read out the extra EX files and can't remember if it was that play through or this one where I explained about the extra costumes. I think I will revisit this again and do a more in-depth look at this port with history, explanations etc.

@@AKIR_4 I think I might have seen some videos covering stuff related to changes that were made to pack it in the cartridge. I believe Alpha Omega Sin had a video covering every version years ago, but it's outdated because of the GOG release. That being said, if you want to do videos on this game, by all means feel free to do so. Feel free to compare to the other versions, but I'd suggest the Want Ad as something you could use if you want to do a separate theory video because the job requirements seem very sus.

@Ness_and_Sonic I've got multiple versions/ports of this game; PS1, PC (not the GOG port), N64, and GameCube. At the moment, my channel is mainly game play from streams. But as I said, I may venture into an "in depth" analysis of the port/games (maybe others too).

@@AKIR_4 I think AOS has the Dreamcast and Tiger Gamecom versions, too. Anyway, best of luck if you do decide to jump into other video ideas.

@Ness_and_Sonic Sadly don't own a Dreamcast, hopefully one day.
Hadn't heard of the Tiger Game.com or that port! Just looked into it and learnt something new!
