Great upload of a classic night at Tiger Stadium. Poor Archie was trying to play after breaking his arm on mid season, and was being sent out to play against one of the finest defenses in LSU history, primed for revenge after Manning had ruined their perfect season the previous year. It was a slaughter, a sad precursor to what he would go through when he got to the NFL’s hapless Saints. Fate happily tuned for Archie as he watched two of his boys great careers, and now he will witness his grandson Arch playing at Texas where he’s bound to begin writing his own legend, built upon the character of the great Archie Manning.
Everyone take a look at the fans in the crowd. The men are in suit and tie, the ladies are in dresses. No dancing in the end zone, and no chirping on the field. People during this time had class, 180 degrees from what is found at the game today. Sportsmanship and being respectful. I was also 13 years old in 1970, but my folks couldn't afford to go.
I was at this game as a 13-year-old, with my family in our season tickets in U11 Row DD. My dad had purchased a small black-and-white TV, I carried it in along with the battery pack. The crowd was at fever pitch after Archie kicked our butts the previous two years. We left the game early, heard the roar from inside the stadium on Craig Burns last punt return for TD. Stopped for a minute, turned on the TV to watch the replay! It was a beautiful night to be in good old Tiger Stadium!
Awesome footage. I am pretty sure I watched the game. The punt returns stick out. Casanova was quite good. LSU probably tried to score after the game was over.
LSU might have been angry about getting locked out of the bowl bids in 1969, but the situation was effectively its own fault. The Tigers very much wanted to play in the Cotton Bowl against #1 Texas. Consequently, LSU disregarded early overtures from the Sugar Bowl to keep open a chance to play in Dallas on New Year’s Day. The Cotton Bowl had a mutual interest with LSU until Notre Dame announced it would end its long running refusal to play in bowl games. Getting Notre Dame was a situation the Cotton Bowl couldn’t turn down. It invited the Fighting Irish to play Texas. LSU was caught completely off guard by Notre Dame getting the Cotton Bowl spot against Texas. Meanwhile the Sugar Bowl invited Ole Miss. At that point LSU tried to get into the Sugar Bowl but that game secured Arkansas to play the Rebels. All other games had filled their spots while LSU pined for the Cotton Bowl so the Bayou Bengals were shut out of the bowl games entirely that season. Had it accepted the Sugar Bowl’s advances when they came, they’d have played in New Orleans.
It was exciting to be flung into circumstance as a broadcaster, talk-ups to national news alerts or "gapping," when sports feeds went down. That, in my case was when you had a certain amount of ready information to help, here, Bill Owen is trying to make the grade in a teletype world and it's notable there was some kind of Ole Miss roster available to him in New Yawk!
Been a LSU fan seen the night Billy Cannon ran the punt back in the mud to take OleMiss’s hopes of a championship in the 50’s, to be nice,Ole Miss used to be voted America’s best uniforms so much they stop the award
In the end Nebraska was the big winner. Woody Hayes lost his first Bowl Game to Stanford this season. Texas won the regular season Natty. Buckeyes fell short twice.
Funny how in 1970 they could show lots of girls in the stands, definitely a cringe factor now with the playing of Dixie over and over, waving the flags, at least that is better
NO Confederate Flags allowed at Ole Miss FB games since 1996 🎉. NO Col Reb since 2003 🎉. NO playing of Dixie whatsoever since 2016 🎉. Things have changed a lot since 1970.
@@tommaraist8052So you want to forget the past? I was just commenting on a pertinent observation. Our society in some ways has come so far. In others, not at all.
Thanks so much for posting. Very fond memories as a then 10 year old Tiger fan.
I had forgotten the tricky LSU kick return procedure.

I would rather watch these old game than any of the games we have today. This is real football with none of the sissy rules.
Horse tackling ..targeting….among the lamest.
Love these old games. Brings back some great memories. Thanks for posting
I remember this game. I was 9, and at my grandparents. Archie Manning playing in a cast. Gutsy.

My 1st game in 78 ....merchandise was not the mega market it became back then.....
I love seeing the old lighting......
Not a black person in sight

LSU went on to lose the de facto national championship to Nebraska. Bama would do the exact same thing the following year. Nebraska was a monster.
Great uploads!!
Keep it going
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Can you find the original tv broadcast of 1965 sugar bowl lsu vs Syracuse
Thank you very much.

A rematch of the 1966 Cotton Bowl.
They did get an invitation to a bowl however, the seniors voted to not play in a bowl game.
Ole Miss 27
Piggies 23
SUGAR BOWL FINAL
So glad tbe era of Notre Dame worship is fucking over.
I wish the network had fixed the sound issue before 4:51. That commercially looks like it would have been a doozy.
Except for the arrow markers that were added years later, the field looks exactly the same as it would be for many years.
The in studio announcer Bill Owen doing an admirable job winging it until they got the audio fixed

Ole Miss, in fact, still has GREAT uniforms...LUV the Powder Blue jerseys w helmet.
Is this the game LSU ran 3 plays in 4 seconds? I've HATED all things LSU ever since...
That was 1972. Bert Jones was the LSU qb. The clock operator was employed by the SEC, not LSU, and his daughter was an Ole Miss student.
No, it's not. CHEATERS = LSUX
We been kicking your Rebel butts for years!!! Geaux Tigers!
17:29 strange KO return by the Tigers. 55:33 hospital pass....
This game was played on my 12th birthday.....
Tried playing it on my tv no sound play it on my phone sounds good

Archie Who?
🔥 HOTTY TODDY 🔥
Love the old vids, but can’t you click the clear button and get rid of that annoying counter?
No offense to Bear Bryant, but Bruiser Kinnard has to be the best name for a football coach ever....
2:33:02 - the first ever dial up computer system
1:17:16 I’m in love with her
any butt whipping of Ole Miss is awesom
55 - 49! GOOD Guys WIN @ God's Country, OXFORD!
Geaux Tigers!
1:22:02 Damn!
I was born on the day of this game! Destined to be a Tiger. :)

@@JohnMichaelGunner I was referring to that time, they are to commended for the changes
Gee wiz….all those tough players and cute SEC girls are all over 70+ years old now….man….life goes
Fast.
LSU's and Ole Miss' teams were still segregated in the year 1970. What a disgrace.
Excellent observation. That’s why when some reminisce about these being the “glory days” of college football I take it with a grain of salt.
You all so morally superior. Thanks for living in the past.

And to this day the HBCs are 99% black.
BIG Ole Miss fan here who is embarrassed by such a fact.
