Trey is a Jedi.
True this is.
I still think he is a ninja
Oh he's both...
was
and garcia is a master jedi, but i would say that Trey today is also a master jedi, but 2 different styles and both are great. Trey was good in 94, but he was just a jedi then, just like Garcia in 1970.
Trey is undoubtedly one of best guitarists of all time
Trey's a master of tension and release. Love it.
And I respect that you can't help bobbing your head and grinning when you listen to trey play. Trust me...most of his fans can't help it either.
😂👍
Tension and release are his middle name. :)
Oh, you're dangerously close to the Rabbit Hole that is Trey Anastasio. Beware. He's become a 24-year obsession of mine.
😂👍
Graham Futerfas Saw the Trey show back in 02. The man’s a genius.
Same. My first show was Jones Beach 1994.
God 94 was such a good time. I think they crossed the country 4 times that year and played over a 120 shows. Damn I miss 90s tour!.
BostonDeadHead These past few years it seems they’ve forgotten their roots. Nothing on the east coast 😞
LOL. Nothing on the east coast. You are talking about "phish" the guys from VT, right?
Charles Hambleton Two nights in Albany is all we’re getting on the fall tour. And midweek at that.
but you say in the past few years? Bakers dozen, all the nye runs, etc, etc, etc. Also, Hampton is east coast, farther east even than Albany.
Charles Hambleton Not sure why you think Hampton is closer than Albany...it’s not like I told you where I’m driving from. But my point is there are no shows in New England. I’m 40 years old and the chance to take 3 days off to catch a show ended about the time I built a house and settled down. Now if they come to Maine...New Hampshire...or Mass I’m down
Youll be selling grilled cheese sandwiches on tour in no time
😂
I know a dude who cleared at least a grand doing that
Mmmm... special grill cheese:)
I eat all my profits
It bothers me so much that you guys are calling it grill cheese and not grilled cheese. It's a grilled sandwich not a type of cheese for grilling.
Granted I'm a longtime phan, but I've also played guitar in gigging bands for 15 years and Trey really deserves to be in the annals of the all time great guitar players. His tone is sweet and instantly identifiable and his style has evolved to where you can pick any group of years to hear different kinds of playing, all with masterful control of his instrument (famous for his use of the toggle). This was a good video to pick, what feeling he has here. New to your channel and I love your commentary and enthusiasm... I'm subbing!
Thanks Justin!
What does you playing for 15 years in gigging bands have anything to do with this video?
@@mikechivy it means I actually play the instrument in at least a semi professional manner and I have some idea of what I'm talking about when I comment on these things. Of course it's all subjective what you like and dont like, but when you're analyzing something critically like the creator here it helps to know what you're talking about (which he does too). I can say I don't like Renoir paintings because they don't appeal to me, but I can't say squat about why or make any actual criticisms of his technique. Why did you feel the need to comment? What did you think it meant?
Must have been the hair.
Seriously, he will be recognized as one of the best guitarists in US History.
👍
Certainly one of the tastier ones.
no he won't... unfortunately he'll never get the recognition he deserves
I wish but I think he’ll always be underrated due to Phish’s “jam band” status.
@@atreides6 agreed, and their new music doesnt really help that image as after 1998 story of the ghost album which had Guyute, they almost totally abandoned writing more compositional music like zappa. Songs like fluffhead, you enjoy myself, divided sky, run like an antelope, stash. Those songs are very long and have great improv but its always done in segments where they are advancing to the next phase of written music, Reba is another great example of that. People were not realizing that a lot of it was not just "jamming", but their stuff after that has been much more standard in song writing with a massive improv that goes into the ending bar
Thank you for doing Trey.
No problem!
yes thanks for doing this one so quickly after I requested it!! Cheers mate!!
I'm pleased to say this show from Glens Falls in '94 was my first Phish show when I was in college.
Cool!
I was instantly hooked on Phish and looking forward to Watkins Glen this weekend :)
😮😮😮😮
Jamie Lewis
Ouch
Sorry bro
yeah...Curveball getting cancelled this weekend sucks :(
They played the entire Beatles White Album that night as a second set.
They considered it their musical costume for Halloween.
I was there. Headed to this year's in Vegas.
'played' being used loosely. Lol .
Still impressive. I doubt the Beatles ever sat down and played that double album live, let alone doing it between two hour long sets.
I was there as well, glens falls civic center Halloween '94...amazing show and they played the entire white album in between two other full sets! Trey and the boys are incredible!
Awesome!
Oh, my. What a brilliant homage to the original. Trey absolutely killed it.
I've always said there was a brief period in history where Trey was the best guitarist in the world. Maybe it was 94-97, maybe it was just 1994, maybe it was only this night (Divided Sky!?). But I still truly believe he hit that peak at some point in his career.
👍
So true, he was at his best then... You know, when he actually cared about hitting all the right notes Lol
Still is, IMO. 94-97 were the peak years, though, as you say.
best guitarist in the world? i love phish to death but you're insane. :)
Ronnie Reese I dunno man, he keeps evolving, progressing.....he’s top 5 for sure
The whole band is great
Couldn’t have explained it better. 94’ tone is one of my favorites and so glad he’s brought an option to bring that tone back from that year. While his styles have changed almost every year of phish, one thing that he’s always been able to do is his ability to utilize space between notes along with his control. Now that he’s older obviously there’s been some sloppiness but he’s still able to do something for me that no other guitar players can. While he’s wrote a lot of great compositions and has come up with his own unique styles, I don’t think he’s been a huge influencer on a ton of the great guitarists in this era. But he has been able to learn and take advice from all the great guitarists over time which he shows in all of his music. He’s one of the most diverse guitarists of all time. People may hate on phish but you can’t deny how unbelievably good him along with the rest of the band are at playing their instruments. They are one of the most musically tight bands of today. They connect on a telepathic level that I won’t ever be able to wrap my head around. Call me biased but Phish is one the greatest instrumental and improvisational bands of all time. Everyone who disagrees is closed the minded. Phish may be silly but they can play like no one else!
Amen!
Totally agree about the spaces. I love how he lets some notes just ring. I've been thinking about his "sloppiness" the past few months and, from listening to '17/'18 shows it sounds like he's trying more new things. Putting himself in uncomfortable places where mistakes happen, but magic is there, too. I credit it to his Chicago shows with the Dead. I think playing alongside Phil and Bob gave him a challenge he hadn't faced before, and you could see it on his face--the fear, the disappointment, the courage, the joy. He's in a different place than he's been probably since the mid-90s. Thanks Wings of Pegasus for awesome vids!
Totally agree. He actually changed his rig around at the end of last year so obviously it takes time to get used to new things. 17' was one of the best years of phish and this year hasn't been too shabby either. Glad these guys are still healthy and able to create so much magic after 35 years
@@sethclippard1527 The thing I don't like about try is how he plays too much, and lets notes ring too much. He doesn't use silence for space. It gets old quick.
Ahhhh. That brings back memories. Thank you.
No problem!
Watch the Divided Sky from that same 10/31/94 show.
Thanks!
No problem, I just found your channel today from a phish forum... If you are interested in watching another video of a more standard rock song check out Chalkdust Torture from Pershing, NE 10/21/95, it is much shorter than Divided Sky, but it's a classic E to A jam.
Yep that is the pick from that show
came here to say this!! the sustain is legendary
Lol right, surely not the Reba
Thanks for the shout-out to one of the true guitar wizards of the 20th century. I truly believe that! What's even more amazing is I still can't confirm whether he's a better guitarist or composer. Check out the Black-Eyed Katy from 11/22/97 - that'll melt your face! Thanks again great work.
Thanks!
Great timing! Trey has a great ability to build and sustain tension in his playing. The best!
Thank you so much for doing this video!! I know other people have said it before, but a ton of the appeal to these videos is watching your reactions. It's very clear how much music moves you and calls to your ears. Thanks for doing these videos, I'm enjoying catching up on them all, liking and commenting on them. Supporting your channel mate!!
Thanks Keith!
Great performance with awesome feel and vibrato.
I am pretty sure this was 94 glens falls Halloween show. Trey came out dressed like Jerry in the oversized T. They played the entire white album for just the second set as their “Halloween costume “. I was in the front row taking it all in. One of the most incredible experiences of my
Life
This was that show!! Interesting to see how their dress style has changed over the years. It has definitely changed for the better haha
Trey did not dress like Jerry! I was at this show & he actually wore a marshmello head to start the show & then their musical costume album was the entire Beatles White album . The show went till 4:20am .At this point in 94 I was seeing Dead & Phish shows back to back. Phish was blowing the roof off and most Dead shows were kinda of tired but the 10/1/94 Boston Garden Dead show was pretty sick.
One of my favs to listen to!! Especially when I was at school in Queensbury about 5 mins from the Glens falls civic center
I remember hearing rumors that this was a shirt that was given to Trey by Jerry or the band that's why so oversized
@@jeffbanford18 Yeah I bought a bootleg VHS tape of it with good taper audio edited in somewhere while on tour in '95. Still my favorite Halloween show...
Trey is one of my favorite players.
Phish had such energy in the 90's.
This is a good solo, however there are many to choose from.
One of my favorites is from A Live One. The track is Slave to the Traffic Light. It builds and builds so wonderfully. Great stuff.
Thanks for this Fil!
That is a great solo. You are absolutely correct, it is one of their best examples of building a jam to an intense peak. Also on that album is the solo from Stash which I feel is one of Trey's ultimate solos, he builds amazingly in this one as well and his use of sonic noise and tension with that amazing Laguadoc which loves to feedback. So intense. Wish there was a video on that jam!!
Keith Garofalo ,
No doubt, the Stash solo go's to the moon on that album! Harry Hood is another track that stands out.
You are really digging deep into the technical side tonight, and I love you reactions to his music♡
Thanks!
Trey’s 1st gen Languedoc is one of the most iconic guitars in history. The solos that guitar have played are damn near infinite. This man won’t stop playing guitar ever. (17 shows starting in the infamous summer of Phunk 97’, the talking heads - Remains in Light Halloween show was insane because it was already in my top 20 albums in rock history.
Trey is a killer player .
Amen!
Glad to see Trey bringin’ a smile to your face...
I’ve always enjoyed your videos man. You pick great artists/vids to review, and your comments are interesting and positive. Thanks!
U did Trey! Awesome! I always take away something from ur input. Ur appreciation of great guitar playing shows
Thanks!
Really cool Fil !!! He makes each note count!!!! Amazing vibrato, lovely to listen to!!!! He has such a great control of the guitar!!! He asks a question and then gives an answer!!!!
As a bassist, I have always admired Trey over so many artists. True control and mastery over his craft. Some artists just have that extra thing that makes them the best.
That's a hell of a good explanation on how to describe Trey..So many people miss out on his music because they usually are looking for that instant gratification in the early parts of his songs.. Therefore not actually listening to a song in it's entirety.. Thanks for the post brother.
No problem!
I was actually at this show! Something to take note of is they played the entire White Album start to finish this night. This was the first time they'd ever played this song live and it was in the guise of having learned every single song from this double album.
Treys one of my favorites. Was lucky enough to see him many times in the early 90’s. An under appreciated guitar god for sure
👍
Brother trey is def not a underrated guitar player. Besides that I saw them 104 times in the 90s with 94-97 the best years by far
*Trey
No love for '98? Island Tour?
People that aren’t Phish fans don’t even know who he is. That’s why he is under appreciated
As a massive Phan, I love the thought of other people getting turned on to Trey through this that may not have heard him before. Great work.
Thanks!
Trey is BOSS
👍
and he uses a Ross
So glad you picked this show!
👍
I like the comment about his “throw away” voice. I totally agree. My guitar teacher used to say that Trey is a “shower singer”. I think this points at one of the most beautiful things about Trey and Phish, why I and so many love them. It’s that they are completely genuine. They love the music and what they do, it’s so pure and it shows. You can’t help but be infected by it.
interesting what you noticed about him not showing his ace too soon. Phish as a jam band have totally MASTERED the dynamic of tension and release. I wouldn't call it a slow burn but they definitely take their time and peak at the right moment.
👍
....And it’s a thing of beauty when they do.
So Fil, great video. I like your attitude. One interesting thing I learned about the rig trey uses...apparently he is creating his tone by running two tube screamer pedals into each other then out to an amp that has one mic out to the PA. It also helps that he's playing a guitar that was literally hand built just like a Stradivarius violin. No bracing! Trey is a phenomenal player. Thanks for giving him credit.
No problem!
I would love to hear your take on the Prague 1998 Ghost.
Thanks!
right on, but as far as song choice i think a bit too esoteric for the mass audiences...hence the choice of a beatles cover
That ghost is super crazy, and demonstrates the relationship between the crowd, the lights, and the band
+1 for Prague 98 Ghost. ua-cam.com/video/Gd31cGlQjsg/v-deo.html
90s Phish was amazing.
👍
Ive always been a bit lukewarm on Phish, but I’ve also really liked Anastasio’s playing and tone since I first heard him. Definitely a really musical bloke. And that languedoc guitar....!
I caught him as a solo act in a small venue. It cured me of ever needing to listen to phish again.
I know people have been giving a lot of recommendations but mine would definitely be the 12-31-93 Harry Hood. Just an amazing and blissful solo at the end there.
Thanks!
Epic hood
Agree - a great hood. Of course there are a lot of great hoods. Actually the whole 12-31-93 show is wonderful stuff.
That harry hood is amazing and simple 11-18-96
Trey is one of the best living guitarists today. Top 10-15 of all time hands down. He's a shredder.
I love to see that smile peek out! Don't hold back! Trey makes us all smile too 😊
😂👍
Saw Phish 1st time 20 years ago. Still seeing shows. Trey is amazing. Please do more Phish. Great analysis by the way.
Thanks!
Another great one from this show is the divided sky at the end in the huge epic part. He crushes that
Miss this Trey hair.
Saw Phish Friday night in Raleigh, NC, and they encored with "A Day in the Life". Absolute magic.
What a great description of Trey’s playing during this period!
Wow! Never heard Trey jam this hard
Yay! I’m also a big fan of phish! You gotta check out some of their originals, even if you don’t react to them. He is a masterful player
Trey is a Jedi dude, the man is on Jerry’s level that is for sure! Trey and Jerry are my all time favorites
He's making the guitar gently weep.
You have the grin with the head shake... to late your hooked now✌️
Great Review Brotha...... you've helped me to talk about and listen to the guitar in a new way. Thank You and Keep 'em Coming.
Thanks John! Will do!
I'm glad you picked Machine Gun Trey for this. Great selection and expected reaction. He's a genius.
No problem!
Trey and one of the greatest jam bands of all time, yes I'm biased, hometown Vermont boys who made damn good. These guys are legend.,.. now get some Twiddle and see what serious homegrown music we have in Vermont....so proud of these musicians...thanks for the review, epic!!
Did you see them in Coventry/Newport at the 'airport' in 2004? It was announced that it was to be their last concert/festival. The interstate was shut down for miles.
Combine dreadful , off key, shrieky vocals, add a touch of child predator , get Dr. Suess to write your ridiculously
Stupid lyrics with absolutely no feeling, meaning, or emotion, and voila! Phish
No problem!
No don’t do twiddle that shits a joke
Peter I did not..I wish!
Good job Fil, incitefull analysis as usual, I love your channel
How did I not see this sooner? 😤
Check out Trey on the Fall Tour Of 1997. Funky Phish era was a blast. Not a single bad show that whole tour.
Thanks!
Love Trey & Phish. Trey is a Jedi master for sure! But as some one who saw a bunch of the final bar shows in Boston and a couple bar gigs in Burlington, ('88-'90), and a batch of shows in the early & mid '90's, the Denver '97 shows, (along with Denver '00) were the weakest Phish shows I ever saw. Fortunately I've seen some hot shows since then in the last 10 years or so. I think there were lots of folks that were newer to the band that were blown away and gave those shows their historic hype. Or it was just really good drugs going around but I was sober, (Trey & I think Page were hung over and wearing the same clothes from the day/night before,.... but that's the extended story ;)
Great video 🎸🤘
Great style playinggggg 👍
🤘🎵🎵🎵🎵
great player! he later went on to develop some really fine loop/delay techniques to layer sounds within the jams --- nice choice mate!
Thanks!
He was well into it by then... check out the Dallas Bomb Factory show, 1994-05-07. 2nd Set loop fest.
What an honor it was to be at this show... unreal.
I guess this is gonna get lost in the comments, but check out Jake Cininger from Umphrey's McGee, as he's one of the most amazing technical players in the world right now. Glory is a good song to look at.
Thanks! Comments don't get lost on my channel, I read them all! 🤘
Hey thanks!
I’m seeing UM tonight
Bass player fisher Chill umph love my man.
Jake is an absolute beast!
Saw 36 Phish shows from 94-2000. This is my favorite era.
Cool!
I know! So many different flavors of phish now. Funky phish, rock and roll phish, low key singer songwriter phish. I mean damn.... They have it all!
Excellent
He was a beast in 1994, and honestly his tone is completely different now, I'd love to hear your take on a newer version of a song.
Thanks!
Hes just so good! I'll be seeing him in a few days wooooo
Awesome!
Love how you are non judgmental and can appreciate great guitar players regardless of genres
It's all music! 🤘
Nice man, thanks for doing a Trey video, and good selection of song. Phish in the 90's were straight fire. I'm sure you'll get plenty of face melting Trey recommendations, and they're probably all terrific, but "Reba" Lowell 1995 is a must listen
No problem!
I didn't even know Britts were aware that Phish existed
😂
Real recognizes real
I’d love to see this UA-camr at Hampton come fall. I’ll even host him at my place!
Lols
JonG all aboard the Mothership
The Reba from this show doesn't get the love it most certainly deserves. Treys tone 😍
👍
Treys playing always makes me smile as well. Nice videos, well spoken, good pace, very cool! I'm going to subscribe.
Thanks Matt!
Really enjoyed your take on this. Would love to hear your take on more of his stuff. Cheers!
Thanks!
Trey is the GOAT!
I love to see people enjoying Phish. They've brought so much joy to my life.
I love going to Phish shows and have seen them many, many times. I am new to your channel and was going to request a Phish song. My favorite Trey playing is their song Divided Sky. It makes me happy to listen to him and live in person is what gives me goosebumps. I have been told by some who only know them by reputation that they are " just a jam band." Well I ask them to listen to one of their songs from a studio album such as Farmhouse and most of the time I win them over. I say yes Phish is a Jam band but much more. I love their humor, their playfulness and light show. The song Contact never fails to make me laugh. If you have time and haven't heard Contact and want a chuckle l suggest you give it a listen Fil.
Trey is unbelievable!
👍
Trey peaks a song like no other. He feels the music and it plays him, always has.
👍
Trey is my phav musician in the world! So cool to hear your take. Keep rockn this channel!
ua-cam.com/video/gBbVT-yBfmM/v-deo.html
'94 - best Phish ever.
Divine Derelicts 97 😉
the year i was born yet they're still touring and they've still got it!
no way!!! i think they were way better around 97-99 but also 00-02 were really good. i know 98 through 02 were my favorite years, because it's difficult to remember, and i had a straight hook with the fam who i met originally on dead "the other ones" tour. I was making a lot of people happy including myself with candy flipping or doing them separately. the last year before they took a break from touring was getting worse every show, then the year or 2 after they came back were just awful imo.
They are on fire right now...meaning this tour. They may not have the same energy as the late 90's but they have a much better overall sound and are putting out some sick jams...cant go wrong with either...
100% agreed, followed closely by 97
Thanks for doing this one it was my suggestion.
No problem!
Trey melted my face!
Trey is so good he's a pure player on his good days he's one of the best players in the world on his bad days he's one of the best on earth
👍
I enjoyed watching your reaction to Trey's playing you were obviously enjoying this one but you perfectly summed up what every musician should strive for which is to serve the song if you can at random take totally disparate styles of music and play along with authenticity and originality you are a well rounded musician and something to contemplate your guitar can be any instrument or voice you want it to be you just need to develop the ability to hear it to pursue it
Love the review (and all other reviews you post). I will say, I believed Trey’s vibrato in this version is not truly his own. Rather, I think it’s meant to mimic Clapton’s from While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Listen to Izabella , and you’ll hear Trey’s vibrato sound more like Jimi. Although, listen to Divided Sky and you’ll hear Trey’s signature vibrato. My $.02
Don't forget, phish played the whole 'white album' that night!, the only time phish played most of those songs!
Yeah I heard that! What a legend!
you really should check out the song Reba from the Sept. 2nd 2017 show..... ua-cam.com/video/qnzyiu9p6BI/v-deo.html
You've got me studying vibrato, Fil! That's the first thing that I noticed! He had very good control over it...like the guitar was actually crying! Awesome!👍😎🎸🎶
👍
Cool! and I love his voice, too!!✌🏻
👍
Rock icon, and he grows stronger by the day. But I must say, there is none that rage like page.
Hell yah at this show!!
Tray is sooooooo good
👍
Trey is one of the best!
Early 90’s Trey could absolutely shred if he wanted to. He was capable of such passionate playing just building and building that tension into a huge sweet release. That is why I fell in love with Phish. Every member of the band was and remains masters of their instruments and they were so tight that they could improvise some of the most beautiful, intense, face melting music I ever heard.
👍
True. His/their dedication and discipline back then made them a force of nature. 1994 especially was lightning in a bottle.
@@MikeEye44 Absolutely!!! 94 is just insane.
Trey's hair was so mesmerising.
I ❤️ Trey 😃
Trey is the best guitar player I've ever seen play 35 times.
Awesome!
Totally agree with your review.
Thanks!
Awesome! Love your videos and also happen to be a phish fan. Really enjoyed this.
Thanks!
